Warren Buffett plugs cheap Vanguard trackers in latest investor letter

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett has just delivered the latest of his popular letters to shareholders in his firm Berkshire Hathaway – and this year he is full of praise for cheap tracker funds.

Warning against active investing and trying to ‘pick winners’, Buffett tells non-professional investors their aim should be to own a cross-section of businesses that together are bound to do well and ‘a low-cost S&P 500 index fund will achieve this goal’.

Buffett recommends a very simple portfolio split between shares and government bonds which he believes will beat long-term returns made by most investors – pension funds, institutions or individuals – who use ‘high-fee managers’.

‘My money, I should add, is where my mouth is,’ he says, before describing the investing instructions left in his will for a trust bequeathed to his wife.

‘My advice to the trustee could not be more simple: Put 10 per cent of the cash in short-term government bonds and 90 per cent in a very low-cost S&P 500 index fund. (I suggest Vanguard’s.)’

Buffett has informed and entertained investors with annual letters since the 1960s – go here to read those going back to 1977 and check below for some more nuggets from the latest, including about his mistakes and how often to check stock prices.

The latest Berkshire Hathaway results reveal it made £11.6billion last year, up from £8.8billion the year before.

But growth of 18.2 per cent in the company’s book value – its assets minus liabilities – lagged the 32.4 per cent rise in the US’s S&P 500 share index with dividends included last year.

It also emerged that Buffett has cut his stake in struggling UK supermarket Tesco from 5.2 per cent to 3.7 per cent, though it remains among his biggest holdings alongside the likes of Coca-Cola and Goldman Sachs.

TiM iPhone puff

After Tesco’s shock profit warning in January 2012, Buffett took the opportunity to increase his stake. However, he seems to be having second thoughts and started selling some of his shares last autumn.

Read more here about Buffett’s investment in Tesco, and how British investing guru Neil Woodford looks to have made a better call by offloading his stake straight after the profit alert.

What does Warren Buffett say about…?

Outperforming the S&P 500 index

Over the stock market cycle between year ends 2007 and 2013, we overperformed the S&P. Through full cycles in future years, we expect to do that again. If we fail to do so, we will not have earned our pay. After all, you could always own an index fund and be assured of S&P results.

Berkshire’s biggest purchases in 2013, HJ Heinz and NV Energy

Both companies fit us well and will be prospering a century from now.

With Heinz, Berkshire now owns eight and a half companies that, were they stand-alone businesses, would be in the Fortune 500. Only 491 and a half to go.

Owning part-stakes in companies

Long-term success: Buffett reckons Heinz will still be prospering a century from now

Long-term success: Buffett reckons Heinz will still be prospering a century from now

At Berkshire, we much prefer owning a non-controlling but substantial portion of a wonderful company to owning 100 per cent of a so-so business; it’s better to have a partial interest in the Hope diamond than to own all of a rhinestone

Belief in America

Our subsidiaries spent a record $ 11billion on plant and equipment during 2013, roughly twice our depreciation charge. About 89 per cent of that money was spent in the United States. Though we invest abroad as well, the mother lode of opportunity resides in America.

Charlie [Munger, his business partner] and I have always considered a “bet” on ever-rising US prosperity to be very close to a sure thing. Indeed, who has ever benefited during the past 237 years by betting against America? If you compare our country’s present condition to that existing in 1776, you have to rub your eyes in wonder. And the dynamism embedded in our market economy will continue to work its magic. America’s best days lie ahead..

Car insurer GEICO

GEICO in 1996 ranked number seven among US auto insurers. Now, GEICO is number two, having recently passed Allstate. The reasons for this amazing growth are simple: low prices and reliable service. You can do yourself a favor by calling 1-800-847-7536 or checking Geico.com to see if you, too, can cut your insurance costs.

STILL A PAPERBOY AT HEART…

Buffett gives details of an unusual Berkshire Hathaway tradition – newspaper throwing.

Arrangements for Berkshire’s annual meeting on Saturday May 3 2014

CenturyLink’s doors will open at 7am, and at 7.30 we will have our third International Newspaper Tossing Challenge. Our target will be a Clayton Home porch, precisely 35 feet from the throwing line. I tossed about 500,000 papers when I was a teenager, so I think I’m pretty good.

Challenge me: I’ll buy a Dilly Bar for anyone who lands his or her throw closer to the doorstep than I do. The papers will be 36 to 42 pages, and you must fold them yourself (no rubber bands allowed).

No one likes to buy auto insurance. But almost everyone likes to drive. The insurance needed is a major expenditure for most families. Savings matter to them – and only a low-cost operation can deliver these. GEICO’s cost advantage is the factor that has enabled the company to gobble up market share year after year. Its low costs create a moat – an IIII enduring one – that competitors are unable to cross.

Making mistakes

The crowd of companies in this section sells products ranging from lollipops to jet airplanes. Some of these businesses, measured by earnings on unleveraged net tangible assets, enjoy terrific economics, producing profits that run from 25 per cent after-tax to far more than 100 per cent. Others generate good returns in the area of 12 per cent to 20 per cent.

A few, however, have very poor returns, a result of some serious mistakes I made in my job of capital allocation. I was not misled: I simply was wrong in my evaluation of the economic dynamics of the company or the industry in which it operated.

Fortunately, my blunders usually involved relatively small acquisitions. Our large buys have generally worked out well and, in a few cases, more than well. I have not, however, made my last mistake in purchasing either businesses or stocks. Not everything works out as planned.

The fundamentals of investing

Focus on the future productivity of the asset you are considering. If you don’t feel comfortable making a rough estimate of the asset’s future earnings, just forget it and move on. No one has the ability to evaluate every investment possibility. But omniscience isn’t necessary; you only need to understand the actions you undertake.

Second thoughts? Buffett has cut his stake in struggling UK supermarket Tesco from 5.2 per cent to 3.7 per cent

Second thoughts? Buffett has cut his stake in struggling UK supermarket Tesco from 5.2 per cent to 3.7 per cent

If you instead focus on the prospective price change of a contemplated purchase, you are speculating. There is nothing improper about that.

I know, however, that I am unable to speculate successfully, and I am skeptical of those who claim sustained success at doing so. Half of all coin-flippers will win their first toss; none of those winners has an expectation of profit if he continues to play the game. And the fact that a given asset has appreciated in the recent past is never a reason to buy it.

Games are won by players who focus on the playing field – not by those whose eyes are glued to the scoreboard. If you can enjoy Saturdays and Sundays without looking at stock prices, give it a try on weekdays.

Being realistic

The unsophisticated investor who is realistic about his shortcomings is likely to obtain better long term results than the knowledgeable professional who is blind to even a single weakness.

Active investing

Both individuals and institutions will constantly be urged to be active by those who profit from giving advice or effecting transactions. The resulting frictional costs can be huge and, for investors in aggregate, devoid of benefit. So ignore the chatter, keep your costs minimal, and invest in stocks as you would in a farm.

The benefits of cheap tracker funds

The goal of the non-professional should not be to pick winners – neither he nor his “helpers” can do that – but should rather be to own a cross-section of businesses that in aggregate are bound to do well. A low-cost S&P 500 index fund will achieve this goal.

Investing instructions laid out in his will

One bequest provides that cash will be delivered to a trustee for my wife’s benefit. (I have to use cash for individual bequests, because all of my Berkshire shares will be fully distributed to certain philanthropic organizations over the 10 years following the closing of my estate.)

My advice to the trustee could not be more simple: Put 10 per cent of the cash in short-term government bonds and 90 per cent in a very low-cost S&P 500 index fund. (I suggest Vanguard’s.) I believe the trust’s long-term results from this policy will be superior to those attained by most investors – whether pension funds, institutions or individuals – who employ high-fee managers.

Benjamin Graham’s book The Intelligent Investor, which he bought in 1949

I can’t remember what I paid for that first copy of The Intelligent Investor. Whatever the cost, it would underscore the truth of Ben’s adage: Price is what you pay, value is what you get. Of all the investments I ever made, buying Ben’s book was the best (except for my purchase of two marriage licenses).

An Open Letter to Bad Tippers: Why Not Tipping Your Waitstaff Is Inexcusable

Dear tightwads — if you can afford to eat out, you can afford to tip your wait staff.

A reader, “MJ,” sent me this:

Dear Matt,

Can you write something about people who don"t tip??? I see you"ve posted about people who are rude to customer service and people who leave their carts in the parking lot… what about people who don"t leave tips. I"d like to tell you about what happened to me. I"m a waitress at a steakhouse in a different state from you. Myself and my coworkers get stiffed all the time by people. Especially older people who drive expensive cars to get here then order expensive drinks and expensive entrees and leave a 5 percent tip. It"s so infuriating!!! This is how I feed my kids … I"m a mom… recently divorced.. and I take care of my family through tips! Yesterday a couple came in, stayed at a table for two hours, ordered appetizers, entrees and desserts… I took good care of them… they even complimented me on my great service…. and then they left a note on the reciept saying they “unfortunately” couldn"t “afford” to leave a tip. They just spent 80 DOLLARS ON THEIR MEAL!! You can afford to spend 80 dollars on one dinner but you can"t afford to tip??? Sorry Matt this just makes me so angry and its a really common problem. I thought maybe you could talk about it to bring to people"s attention.

If you use this just call me MJ.

This woman has challenged me to speak out against non-tipping tyrants, and I could not live with myself if I failed to answer her call. I will address my response not to her, but to the tightwads who torment her and her fellow toilers in the grueling, thankless “service industry.”

This is the least that I can do. I love to eat — it"s my favorite pastime — and eating out is always a treat. Yet I know that this experience requires the labor of many people; labor that I could not do. I lack the patience and temperament required to deal with the daily onslaught of pompous cheapskates and verbally abusive egomaniacs.

And now to speak directly to a certain terrifying subset of this species. These are the lowest, most shameless sorts of customers. Their existence is a constant, chilling reminder that evil exists in the world. They are the non-tippers:

Dear Non-Tippers,

Are you thinking about going out tonight? Considering a nice little jaunt to that cozy steakhouse down on main street? Looking forward to a pleasant evening of being fed and waited upon by strangers? Maybe catching a flick after dinner? Good. Good for you. Sounds like a splendid evening. I"m happy that you"ve got the money to treat yourselves.

Oh, but you don"t have it in your budget to tip your server?

Then it would seem that you, in fact, don"t have the money to treat yourselves after all.

My friends, if you have 35 bucks to drop on a meal, but you don"t have the 7 dollars to leave a 20 percent tip, then what are you doing in a restaurant in the first place? You need to hire a financial adviser (well, maybe see if you can get a free consult) because it"s just plain unwise to blow your entire net worth on a couple of entrees at Applebee"s. Save your 35 dollar nest egg, run to Walmart, buy a box of spaghetti for a dollar, and enjoy a home cooked meal.

For a while in my early twenties, after I paid my bills for the month, I usually had about 30 or 40 dollars left over. I often drove by sit-down restaurants and thought, “Hmmm, I wish I could pull in and have a bite to eat.” But then I remembered, “Oh, I"m broke; I have no money, I"m poor,” and so I went back to my apartment and ate peanut butter and jelly or ramen noodles. These are the traditional cultural dishes of Broke People — not big, juicy hamburgers at high class joints like Chili"s.

Oh, but you aren"t broke? You"re going tipless this evening out of some diluted “principle”?

Why should you have to tip, you ask?

Well, you don"t. You aren"t required. Just like you aren"t required to hold the door open for an elderly woman or offer a beverage to a thirsty house guest. You don"t HAVE to do these things. Most of us partake in these conventions because we"re civilized and decent. You don"t HAVE to be civilized and decent. But maybe you can at least do me this favor: if you aren"t going to tip, and you know that from the outset, have the courage of your convictions and inform your waiter upfront. When your server comes to welcome you and give you the daily specials, kindly inform him of the situation. “Good evening, Brad. I"m happy to be here. I won"t be tipping you tonight. Anyway, do we get free refills on the house salad?”

To withhold this information is a lie by omission. You know that Brad will be working under the assumption that a tip is forthcoming. You, therefore, benefit from the illusion of a potential tip, even though there isn"t any potential for a tip at all. This is a lie. You"re lying. You"re being manipulative. Stop it.

And what is this principle on which you stand?

I often hear that the owners of the restaurants should pay a decent wage and then nobody would have to tip. Why should YOU have to pay the server"s wage, you insist.

Good point. Let"s require all restaurant owners to pay their wait staff, what, like 12-15 dollars an hour? Yes, now we don"t have to tip and everyone is ha-

Oh. Wait. What"s this? All of prices on the menu just doubled? No more 2 for 20 deals? No more free refills? No more 9 dollar burgers and 12 dollar steaks? No more obscenely humungous portion sizes?

What"s going on here? You"re telling me that the financial resources of the restaurant"s owners are finite, and a massive increase in operating costs must be logically offset by a hike in prices and a reduction in services?

Oh no! Now my favorite joints are closing earlier! Hold on — no more happy hour?!

This has gone too far.

I want good food, low prices, huge portions, unlimited refills, happy hour special, fast service AND I don"t want to be expected to tip! Kindly point me to the wormhole that will transport me to the dimension where such a thing is possible.

See, non-tippers benefit from the tip structure, and would not be willing to forfeit those benefits, yet they don"t want to pony up the tips themselves. They reap the rewards of the tip system while simultaneously pretending to protest it. They"re hypocrites.

Of course, the main justification offered by non-tippers is not so much based on principle as it is on punishment. They say they will not tip when the service is “bad.” But you"ll notice that these people somehow encounter “bad” service almost every time they go out to eat. What an odd thing. They must be cursed.

Personally, I tip. I almost always tip well. Twenty percent is the baseline minimum. But, where some customers complain about how they “can"t find good service,” I am usually quite pleased with the wait staff I encounter at most establishments. Where non-tippers constantly find excuses to punitively withhold tips, I generally find reasons to add an additional 5 or 10 percent to the pot. This isn"t because I"m lucky or generous, it"s because I"m not a pompous, picky, spoiled brat; constantly looking for the smallest reason to feel slighted by customer service workers.

I"d like to hear the thought process when the bill comes and you non-tippers go through your cheapskate mental checklist.

Hmmm. Well, my glass remained empty for 97 seconds while my waitress handled a party of 27 two tables down. Sorry, I don"t care what else she"s doing. I need prompt refills. That"ll cost her 3 percent. Oh, and I didn"t think she was smiley enough. There goes another 3 percent. I asked for ketchup but it didn"t come. And then I had to ask again! The horror! That shaves another 5 percent. The fries were warm but a little soggy. There goes 2 percent. My meal was late by like a thousand hours! Well, almost. It took 26 minutes or so to come out. I have absolutely no reason to believe that this inconvenience was the fault of my server, but she"s going to have to pay for it. Minus 10 percent. OK, so according to my calculations, she now owes me about 12 dollars.

From what I"ve seen, the server is usually punished for things that have nothing to do with her. But you non-tippers know this. You"re not out for justice; you"re out to save a few bucks. You tell yourselves stories about how you were victimized by the wait staff just so you can leave no tip and still sleep like a baby at night.

But we all know the truth about you. You can"t hide your motivations.

Stop the madness, non-tippers.

Tip your server. Just tip.

Trust me, you"ll feel better.

Father of slain Tsarnaev associate pens letter to Obama, alleges FBI deliberately killed son

The father of Ibragim Todashev, former friend of alleged Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev, has released an open letter to President Barack Obama calling for justice after his son’s killing. Todashev was killed by FBI agents in May.

Abdulbaki Todashev’s letter includes photos of his son’s bullet-ridden body and his bloodstained Orlando, Florida apartment. Ibragim was shot to death by an FBI agent accompanied by two Massachusetts State Troopers, according to Boston magazine.

Also included is a photo of Ibragim’s knee following a surgery he had in March, which the senior Todashev says is proof that his son posed no harm to the FBI agent who killed him.

In the letter, Abdulbaki Todashev says the FBI deliberately tortured and killed his son and proceeded to intimidate and deport his son’s acquaintances in the ensuing months.

Todashev calls on Obama to keep the FBI from interfering with the current independent investigation into his son’s death.

Todashev’s letter states:

“Did my son know that he had the right to remain silent or did he have rights at all, including the right to live? Being a citizen of another country he might not be aware of the laws as he was only 27 years old and wanted to live so much. No, they left no chances for him inflicting 13 gunshot wounds and multiple hematomas on his body. After what FBI agents have done to him whatever excuses they come up with nobody would believe them because my son is dead and cannot talk for himself. They did it deliberately so that he can never speak and never take part in court hearings. They put pressure on my son’s friends to prevent them from coming to the court and speaking the truth.”

“I rely on you, Mr. President, and hope that the prosecutor’s office and the court do not let the agencies conducting internal investigation on this case prevent the truth from coming to light so that at least some part of our grief, caused by the murder of our son, is relieved, and that the murderers stand trial instead of sit in their desk chairs.”

The investigation is being conducted by Florida state attorney Jeffrey Ashton. The lawyer released a statement earlier this month saying that he had received additional information on the killing from the US Department of Justice. He said he would unveil the report’s findings early next year.

Federal prosecutors have stated that Ibragim allegedly implicated Tamerlan Tsarnaev in a 2011 triple murder in Waltham, Massachusetts. Anonymous FBI sources told reporters that Todashev also implicated himself in those murders. Sources have provided conflicting reports on exactly how Todashev died.

Friends of Ibragim Todashev, a Chechen national, told the Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) that FBI agents asked them to spy on Orlando-area mosques, threatening arrest if they failed to comply.

One friend of Todashev, Ashurmamad Miraliev, was arrested by the FBI on September 18 on a warrant for supposedly threatening a witness in an Osceola County battery case 14 months ago.

Yet following his arrest, he was interrogated for six hours only about associations with Todashev – despite repeatedly requesting his right to an attorney, CAIR-Florida said. The FBI agents allegedly responded, “That is not happening.”

We “didn’t ask him anything about the alleged charges. Just interviewed him for over six hours trying to get as much information on Ibragim Todashev as possible,” Hassan Shibly, director of CAIR-Florida, said at a September press conference in Orlando.

CAIR-Florida requested the US Department of Justice open an investigation into the allegations of civil rights violations and abuse by the FBI of Todashev’s friends.

Shortly after speaking to Boston magazine in September regarding her own dealings with law enforcement since the Orlando slaying, Tatiana Gruzdeva – girlfriend of Ibragim Todashev – was arrested in Florida by immigration officers and told she would be deported for talking to the press.

Gruzdeva told the magazine that in May she was interrogated by agents about any connection she or Todashev had to Tsarnaev and the Boston Marathon bombing. Agents eventually sent her to immigration officials. She was detained until August, at times in solitary confinement, before being told she would be released and had another year to stay in the US legally. Regardless, Gruzdeva said she “had gone to sign work papers at the local immigrations office” where she was then arrested and told she would be deported for allowing the magazine to interview her.

Boston magazine reported that Gruzdeva was deported to Moscow.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev died days after the Boston Marathon bombings, during a shootout with law enforcement in Watertown, Massachusetts.

Tsarnaev’s brother and alleged co-conspirator, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was also shot during the encounter, but managed to escape in a stolen vehicle he later abandoned. A day later, Dzhokhar was found wounded in a Watertown backyard during a massive manhunt. He pled not guilty to 30 counts against him on July 10 in a Boston federal court.

Dzhokhar is being tried for killing three people and wounding more than 260 others in a double blast at the Boston Marathon in April 2013. His lawyers have been given until February 28 to decide whether they will request that the case be moved outside of Boston. However, the attorneys have asked for that deadline to be extended because Attorney General Eric Holder is not expected to announce whether prosecutors will seek the death penalty until late January.

Open letter to EU Foreign Ministers

[ Editors Note: This is a bit of a curve ball here, suggesting that the Zionist Lobby still have major assets under it"s control to circumvent the trend away from sanctions as the nuclear talks proceed.  This is even more surprising in that the courts already ruled on cases being arbitrary and with no foundation.

Of course Iran will be seeking to recover financial damages in those cases. But as damages would be paid by goyim, that traditionally is of no concern to your hard core Zionists.

This will certainly be a ongoing story and we will be looking to map out who the Israelis have used in this last ditch effort to keep the phony Iran nuke threat in play as it actually is a key component of their scam.

I thought this previous Gush Shalom letter below to the EU foreign ministers showed the flip side of the coin in terms of attitude. Peace groups like Gush Shalom have a total media black out here in the US, all part of the never ending psyops inflicted on the American people by you know who, and all of their helpers here...Jim W. Uri Avnery – the Old Man of the Israeli peace movement

Uri Avnery and Adam Keller of Gush Shalom, the Israeli Peace Bloc, sent an open letter to the European Union Foreign Ministers due to meet tomorrow (Sept. 6).

We called upon them to persist with their outspoken opposition to settlement construction in the Occupied Territories.

Media reports indicate that settlements and the situation between Israel and the Palestinians are likely to figure on the meeting’s agenda, together with other Middle Eastern issues such as the situation in Syria and Egypt.

“We would like you to know that many in Israel consider your position against settlements to be an expression of true friendship and concern towards Israel” stated the Gush Shalom letter. “It is Israel’s existential interest to come to terms with the fact that in today’s world it is unacceptable to rule over another people by force, confiscate that people’s land and settle on it. The European Union would best help Israel’s true interests by insisting unflinchingly on this principle.”

Following is the full text of the letter

To the Foreign Ministers and representatives of the European Union

” Something old, with something new “

We, Israeli citizens deeply concerned for the future of our country and our region, write you this letter in advance of the meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, scheduled for September 6.

Specifically, we write you as members of Gush Shalom, the Israeli Peace Bloc, a grassroots peace movement which was founded in 1992.

Ever since then, our movement has been struggling to engage the political system and promote the idea of peace between Israel and its Palestinian and other Arab neighbors.

It is our firm belief that Israel’s long-term survival and prosperity depend upon our country’s ability to achieve integration in the region.

An indispensable first step would be an Israeli withdrawal from the territories occupied in 1967 and the long overdue creation of an independent Palestinian state in these territories.

In recent years we have become increasingly concerned at the upsurge of expansionist nationalism in the Israeli society and political system. Such manifestations are often given a religious justification through a tendentious and selective interpretation of the Jewish Scriptures.

Representatives of such tendencies occupy key positions in successive Israeli cabinets, including the current one. This expansionist nationalism manifests itself especially in a determination to hold on to the territories occupied by Israel’s armed forces since 1967 and a relentless drive to maintain and extend Israeli settlement in these territories.

Not only do the settlements constitute a blatant violation of International Law and a major obstacle to any chance of Israel achieving peace with its neighbors, but a big part of our country’s economic resources are annually poured into the bottomless hole of the settlement project, to the great detriment of Israeli society as a whole.

Standing up to evil and power

Standing up to evil and power

In this situation we are writing to you, highly cognizant of the crucial role which the International Community in general and the European Union in particular could and should play.

Specifically, we refer to the Council of Foreign Affairs resolution of 10 December 2012, in which the EU stated its commitment to “Ensure that, in line with International Law, all agreements between the State of Israel and the European Union must unequivocally and explicitly indicate their inapplicability to the territories occupied by Israel in 1967, namely the Golan Heights, the West Bank including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip”.

Further, we refer to the guidelines published by the European Commission on 19 July this year, aimed at an implementation in practice of the above resolution.

As you must be well aware, the publication of the July 19 guidelines had a far greater impact in Israel than any earlier EU statement on this issue – for the simple reason that this was the first time that the EU went beyond a verbal disapproval of the settlements.

Specifically, Israeli participation in the European Horizon 2020 Project was made conditional upon the Government of Israel stating explicitly its adherence to the above principles.

The Netanyahu Government is faced with a grave dilemma, having in effect to choose between either promoting the settlement project or gaining the very considerable benefits which Israeli science, academic life and economy could derive from participation in Horizon 2020 – as these two goals were made mutually exclusive.

As published several times in the Israeli media, the Netanyahu Government hopes to avoid this dilemma by persuading the European Union to amend or “soften” your position. Moreover, there were references to such approaches by the Government of Israel featuring on the agenda of your September 6 meeting.

Gush Shalom - on the front lines - 2001. Uri is 90 now.

Gush Shalom – on the front lines – 2001. Uri is 90 now.

We would like you to know that many in Israel consider your recent position, as it stands, to be an expression of true friendship and concern towards Israel.

It is vital for Israel, our country, to adopt the norms of behavior prevailing among Western Democracies, of which Israel aspires to be one.

It is Israel’s existential interest to come to terms with the fact that in today’s world it is unacceptable to rule over another people by force, confiscate that people’s land and settle on it. The European Union would best help Israel’s true interests by insisting unflinchingly on this principle.

We are well aware that, as well as the above issue, you are urgently concerned with the situation in other countries in our region – notably, Syria and Egypt, and that these are very likely to figure prominently on the agenda of your forthcoming meeting.

It would be wrong to assert that all the Middle East’s problems derive solely from the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. But it would be quite right to say that an end to Israeli occupation and a solution to our very long-lasting conflict could exert a positive, calming influence throughout the region.

Yours,   Uri Avnery and Adam Keller – On behalf of The Gush Shalom Movement
