Watch Katie Couric"s Offensive Attempt to Interview 2 Transgender TV Stars

On Monday, Elite model Carmen Carrera (a popular contestant on the reality show RuPaul’s Drag Race) and actress Laverne Cox (Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black) sat down with Katie Couric on her ABC show Katie. Arguably the highest-profile transgender women in the entertainment biz today, they’re also outspoken activists on trans rights and issues. Unfortunately, Couric seemed unable to get beyond a schoolyard fascination with the women’s “private parts,” as you can see in the video above.

A discussion of Carrera’s modeling career quickly descends into series of tone-deaf questions from Couric about her surgeries. As this great piece at Autostraddle puts it:

Things started to seem a little odd when the viewers kept being reminded about Carrera’s transition by being shown pictures of her in bandages and mentions of her transition at every chance. Later when Couric introduced Carrera, she said that “she was born a man and that’s why she’s on our show,” making it very clear that she’s only interesting because of her transition…However, the real trouble started when Couric started to ask Ms. Carrera if transitioning was painful because of all the surgery that she had to go through. Carmen looked a little confused and responded by talking a little about her nose job and breast augmentation and that’s when Katie pounced. She immediately asked if Carmen’s “private parts” are “different now.”

At this point, Carrera literally shushes Couric, and explains her problem with media stories on transgender issues. “They always focus on either the transition or the genitalia, and I think there is more to trans people than just that.”

Cox agreed. “That preoccupation…objectifies trans people and then we don’t get to deal with the real lived experiences. The reality of trans people lives is that so often we’re targets of violence. We experience discrimination disproportionately to the rest of the community and our unemployment rate is twice the national average…When we focus on transition, we don’t get to talk about those things.”

Throughout the segment, Cox and Carrera demonstrate incredible grace under fire, eloquently countering Couric’s repeated line of questioning about their surgeries and anatomy with some real talk about issues of safety and discrimination against trans people. The whole clip is well worth a watch.

Transgender 6-Year-Olds in Potty Spurs California Repeal Drive

Californians jolted by the mental image of children sharing lavatories and locker rooms with opposite-sex classmates are campaigning to repeal the nation’s first law requiring schools to accommodate transgender pupils.

The law, which takes effect Jan. 1, requires all schools receiving state funds to let children choose between boys’ or girls’ bathrooms, for instance, and participate in sex- segregated sports teams based on their gender identity rather than their biological sex.

The drive to put a repeal on the ballot echoes a 2008 initiative, Proposition 8, a constitutional amendment passed by voters that banned same-sex unions. California resumed gay weddings in June following a Supreme Court ruling.

“It is just fundamentally wrong,” said Doug Boyd, a lawyer circulating petitions in the Los Angeles suburb of Glendora. “It’s against the laws of God and nature.”

Boyd, 60, said he can’t stomach the idea of his 6- and 7- year-old daughters sharing school bathrooms, showers or locker rooms with a boy who sees himself as a girl.

A coalition led by the Capitol Resource Institute, a Sacramento-based nonprofit group that promotes itself as a “watchdog for family values,” is seeking about 500,000 signatures to put a repeal on the 2014 ballot.

“This law just goes way too far,” said Karen England, executive director of the institute and a co-leader of the petition drive. “We need to protect the privacy of all students, not just some students.”

Opposite Sex

Transgender people are those who are born as one sex, yet behave and maintain an appearance consistent with the other sex. While Massachusetts, Connecticut, Washington and Colorado have policies on transgender schoolchildren, only California has incorporated them into its laws, according to Equality California, the state’s largest gay-rights group.

The law’s supporters, which include the California State PTA and Governor Jerry Brown, a 75-year-old Democrat, underestimated the public backlash, Boyd said. He said he expects to easily obtain signatures to overturn the law in his neighborhood and at his 5,000-member church, Calvary Chapel Chino Hills.

“I have a 6-year-old daughter and a 7-year-old daughter in public schools and I’ll be darned if there are boys in their bathrooms,” Boyd said. He said he’d put the girls in another school before making them share bathrooms, locker rooms and sports teams with opposite-sex peers.

Accommodation Plan

Michelle Hunter, the Glendora Unified School District’s assistant superintendent for educational services, said officials at the 7,700-student system are awaiting policy guidance on the law from lobbyists for school boards in Sacramento. Hunter said she doesn’t anticipate any costs from the law, as Glendora already has some restrooms for individual students. Boyd said he’s unaware of any transgender students attending his children’s school in Glendora, about 30 miles (45 kilometers) northeast of downtown Los Angeles. Hunter said she couldn’t disclose any information on the number of such students.

In the Los Angeles Unified School District, about 0.5 percent of its 153,000 high-schoolers, or about 763, self- identified as transgender in a 2011 survey, said Judy Chiasson, program coordinator for human relations, diversity and equity.

The Los Angeles and San Francisco school districts already have policies allowing students to use facilities and join sports teams based on their gender identity. Los Angeles administrators have spent “negligible” time accommodating transgender students and there has been no expense to the district, Chiasson said.

Without Incident

In San Francisco, transgender students have used opposite- sex facilities for a decade without incident or cost to the district, said a spokeswoman, Gentle Blythe.

“Most students want privacy so we work out a way they can use the bathroom discreetly if that is what he or she prefers,” Blythe said by e-mail.

Neither school system tracks the number of students who have requested special accommodations, Chiasson and Blythe said.

Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, the San Francisco Democrat who wrote the law, described it as an “important victory” for the rights of transgender people and said it would help children express their true identities. He said he’s not worried by the petition drive.

“The referendum is to be expected,” he said in a statement. “I think it’s marginal, but we’ll watch it.”

The repeal effort faces long odds: Of 76 referendums that qualified for circulation in California since 1912, only 19, or one-fourth, have been passed by voters, according to Secretary of State Debra Bowen’s office.

Law Suspended

The repeal advocates have until Nov. 10 to submit their petition. If they gather enough valid signatures to qualify for the November 2014 ballot, the law would be suspended pending the outcome of the vote, according to Bowen’s office.

England said the campaign against the law stresses the loss of privacy for non-transgender students sharing restrooms, locker rooms and sports teams with peers of the opposite sex, rather than moral objections.

Opponents also are concerned that California may set a precedent for other states, she said.

“It’s going to center around the lack of privacy, the lack of safeguards and the lack of local control,” England said of the campaign. “We see this as common sense.”

Transgender inmates go to extremes

transgender

Self-castration, suicide and waves of desperation are byproducts of the denial of sex hormones to inmates yearning to switch genders, advocates say.

But outside the walls, debate has been stirred on whether the prison system is the right place to help chemically escort a man to womanhood, or vice versa, and critics question if any taxpayer money should pay for the hormones used to help inmates undergo sex changes.

Thursday’s revelation that convicted secret leaker Bradley Manning wants to live as a woman and begin hormone therapy ignited talk about what happens when prison doctors refuse hormones to inmates with gender identity disorder (GID): depression, death wishes, purposely amputated genitalia and, for those already en route to a new gender, the return or disappearance of certain male or female traits — from body hair to muscles to breasts.

The Army does not provide hormone therapy to such prisoners. At the very least, this significantly delays Manning’s plan to physically morph into “Chelsea” — as he’s been sentenced to 35 years in Fort Leavenworth prison.

Miss Major

Annalise Ophelian

Miss Major, 70, lives in Oakland, Calif., where she advocates for transgender people, including ex-inmates.

“You begin to feel like you might as well just die,” said Miss Major, 70, who claims her estrogen prescription was withheld by the medical staff during a five-year stint at a New York prison for a prostitution conviction. Major had started taking the pills years before to look like the woman she always felt she was internally. Housed in isolation, and without the drugs, her breasts grew smaller, manly hair again coated her arms and legs, and her emotions ran wild.

“It’s like a roller coaster ride without anything to hang on to. You have no control over what’s happening to you. It’s devastating. You don’t know who you are anymore,” added Major, who today lives in Oakland, Calif., and advocates for transgender people, including ex-inmates.

Already battling a deep disconnect with self-identity, then suddenly being removed from the medications meant to alter their genders, some inmates literally attack the issue in the bloodiest ways, lopping off their sex organs. About 30 such self-mutilations have been documented in U.S. prisons, said Dr. Lori Kohler, a staff physician for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and a national expert on medical management of transgender prisoners.

In California, Kohler has helped oversee hormone meds for about 400 inmates (out of a total population of 150,000). The vast majority of those 400 were born as males and want to become females, taking estrogen and growing female curves while housed in men’s prisons.

“Withdrawing from estrogen can cause significant depression and a general mood disorder, much like what many women experience with menopause,” Kohler said. “When they’re off (hormones), people say they don’t feel right, they feel terrible.”

In one case Kohler followed, an inmate sliced off his penis and testicles while serving in a prison in another state; after being transferred to California, that inmate was placed in a women’s correctional facility.

“They don’t see it as self-mutilating. They feel like they’re righting a wrong, correcting themselves,” Kohler said. “This is a true issue for people, yet it’s just so easily ignored and dismissed. Denying it is like saying: I don’t believe in diabetes.”

The drugs cost about $ 20 per month for female hormones (estrogen), and about $ 60 to $ 80 a month for male hormones (testosterone), she said. Such medical care in prison comes at the taxpayer’s expense.

Prior to 2010, federal inmates who entered that system taking sex-change hormones were allowed to maintain those doses, but U.S. corrections officials denied the start of new hormone regimens for existing prisoners. A lawsuit filed by Boston-based attorney Jennifer Levi on behalf of an inmate caused the prison bureau to reverse that stand and treat gender identity disorder even after its diagnosed in prison.

Yet the administering of hormones to transgender inmates remains inconsistent across state prisons: Some do it, some don’t, said Levi, director of the Transgender Rights Project at Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD).

“The reality is, the underlying medical condition of gender dysphoria is highly stigmatized and widely misunderstood. So people with no expertise, including prison staff, often reject the seriousness of the underlying medical condition just because of bias and discrimination,” Levi said.

Transgender groups consider denying hormones in cases like Manning’s “cruel and unusual punishment” and argue that hormone treatment for gender identity disorder is standard medicine and should be allowed in military prisons as in federal prisons. Manning’s request may be the first time this has come up for a military prisoner.

But a large question remains among many critics outside the advocacy circuit: Should prisons be doling out sex-change drugs?

“It does cause all kinds of security issues for us,” said Brian Dawe, executive director of American Correctional Officer, a group that works to promote the safety and working conditions of corrections workers. “There’s also amount of cost to the taxpayers, which we care about because we’re not only correctional officers, we’re also taxpayers.”

But correctional officers “don’t make moral or sociological judgments on it,” said Dawe, who worked as one in Massachusetts for 32 years. “That’s up to the public.”

Carlos Maza: Fox Hosts Family Research Council To Continue Its Fact-Free Attack On Transgender Student Bill

Fox News hosted a spokesman from an anti-gay hate group to continue the network’s ongoing assault on a California bill that will allow transgender students to have access to school facilities and teams that correspond with their gender identity.

Following Gov. Jerry Brown’s signing of a law that prohibits California public schools from discriminating against transgender students, Fox News invited Peter Sprigg, spokesman for the Family Research Council (FRC), to appear on the August 13 edition of America’s Newsroom.

Sprigg – whose history of extreme anti-LGBT commentary includes suggesting that gay people should be exported from the U.S. -  asserted that the law would ignore “biological reality” while pandering to students’ “transient feelings and emotions”:
