New York Post, Dec. 22, 2013: Navy sailor Lindsay Cooper knew something was wrong when billows of metallic-tasting snow began drifting over USS Ronald Reagan. [...] she and scores of crewmates watched a sudden storm blow toward them from the tsunami-torn coast of Fukushima, Japan. The tall 24-year-old with a winning smile didn’t know it then, but the snow was caused by the freezing Pacific air mixing with a plume of radioactive steam [...] Senior Chief Michael Sebourn, a radiation-decontamination officer, was assigned to test the aircraft carrier for radiation. The levels were incredibly dangerous and at one point, the radiation in the air measured 300 times higher than what was considered safe, Sebourn told The Post.

Lindsay Cooper, Navy sailor aboard USS Ronald Reagan during 3/11 rescue operation: “I was standing on the flight deck, and we felt this warm gust of air, and, suddenly, it was snowing [...] We joked about it: ‘Hey, it’s radioactive snow! I took pictures and video [...] Japan didn’t want us in port, Korea didn’t want us, Guam turned us away. We floated in the water for two and a half months [until Thailand took them in] “People were s- -tting themselves in the hallways [All the while crew members had been suffering from excruciating diarrhea].”

Cooper interviewed by EON, published Dec. 20, 2013: (at 4:30 in) “As soon as you step foot on the flight deck and went outside you had this taste of like aluminum foil.”[...] (at 10:45 in) We thought that we had felt a plume because there was kind of this warm air that went past the ship and you could kind of tell the differences between jet exhaust — we didn’t have any jets going around at the time. It was like 20 degrees outside and you could feel this warm air and you kind of enjoyed it at first and then you’re like, ‘Is that aluminum foil that I taste?’

A Libyan air force colonel was killed Thursday in Benghazi, the latest in a series of attacks on security forces in the cradle of the 2011 revolution.




“The head of air traffic controllers in Benina military base, Colonel Adel Khalil al-Tawahini, was killed Thursday morning,” said Colonel Abdallah al-Zaidi, a security forces spokesman.




Zaidi said unidentified gunmen fired on Tawahini as he left his home in the eastern city.




Benghazi was the epicentre of the 2011 uprising that toppled Moamer Kadhafi but has since seen a surge in attacks targeting security forces and foreign missions.




A former rebel brigade said Monday it had arrested members of a pro-Kadhafi cell and “foreign mercenaries” involved in the recent violence.




But security sources have cast doubt on the arrests, suggesting they may have been aimed at covering the tracks of the real culprits.




Many of the rebel brigades that emerged during the uprising have refused to join the national security forces or lay down their arms, and a patchwork of armed militias controls much of Libya.

When the mistake was realised he was taken to Chorley Hospital for treatment and was later released.

An investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission has now been completed and after a file was passed to the Crown Prosecution Service a decision has now been made not to press charges against the officer.

Malcolm McHaffie, deputy head of CPS Special Crime Division, said: “On the basis of the evidence provided, including CCTV footage and police log record, I have determined that no charges should be brought against the officer.

“The circumstances are unusual because the officer was acting on the basis of erroneous reports from members of the public that the victim was carrying a samurai sword.

“Anyone accused of an assault who may have acted under a mistaken belief as to the facts must be judged on the facts as they believed them to be.

“In addition, police officers are entitled to use reasonable force in order to effect an arrest and where the officer is under a mistaken belief as to the facts the question is whether, in the circumstances as he believed them to be, the force was reasonable.

“The officer has been informed by the police control room that they had received reports that a man was walking around the streets of Chorley carrying a sword.

“It appears the reflective nature of the stick used as a walking aid by the victim, who is partially sighted, led members of the public to mistake it for a weapon. The officer, who was acting on this misinformation, made the same mistake.”

Mr McHaffie said he had considered all the evidence in the case and there was insufficient evidence to prove the policeman had not been mistaken.

Mr Farmer said: “In a strange way I’m relieved, simply because these things can go on so long. At last I feel there is some progress being made. I’m bemused by it, but I just want this to move forward.

“There is no doubt what the police said themselves – I’ve been put through a terrible ordeal. I’ve been through a living nightmare.”

He lodged a claim for damages against Lancashire police in January.

There’s a lesson in this short coincidence story for those who like dressing up as police officers.

One gentleman in northern New Mexico had all the police gear: police lights on his vehicle, a real police weapon etc. “So,” he must have thought, “let’s put this equipment to good use.”   

He was out and about, saw a speeding car and pulled it over. He told the vehicle occupants he was a member of the State Police Search and Rescue. All well and good but … whoops!

The two men in the vehicle really were law enforcement officers – in an unmarked car.

I guess the lesson is: if you want to pretend you are a police officer, just be careful who you pull over.

I first saw this story on Daily Progress. They asked a relevant question, which hasn’t been answered:

“We are left to wonder, however, about one curious detail. Were the state police agents actually speeding? If so, did they have a legitimate need?”

But come on, police officers driving too fast when they don’t need to – surely not!!

Pakistan officer "killed" in Kashmir

Pakistan says an army officer has been killed by Indian shelling on the Line of Control (LoC) that divides the disputed territory of Kashmir.

An army statement said that a captain died and a soldier was seriously injured in the clash near Skardu.

It said the exchange of fire happened late on Tuesday night and continued on Wednesday morning.

Earlier this month, India accused Pakistan of killing five of its soldiers near the LoC.

The Skardu clash is the latest in a series of accusations and counter-accusations, with each side blaming the other for violations of a 2003 ceasefire.

Thousands of people have been killed in Indian-administered Kashmir since an armed revolt against Indian rule erupted in 1989.

U.S. Army investigates sexual assault prevention officer for sex abuse

The U.S. Army announced Tuesday that a sexual assault prevention officer at Fort Hood, Texas was under investigation for abusive sexual contact.




The unnamed Army sergeant first class had been assigned as an Equal Opportunity Advisor and Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP) program, according to the Army. He was immediately suspended from his position once the allegations were made, but has not been charged yet.




The alleged incident or incidents involved pandering, abusive sexual contact, assault, and maltreatment. The potential crimes were being investigated by special agents from the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command.




The investigation came just a week after an Air Force sexual assault prevention officer was arrested for drunkenly assaulting a woman in a parking lot.




Pentagon spokesman George Little said Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel was upset and frustrated by the allegations. Hagel has vowed to reform the military judicial system to better address the staggeringly high rate of sexual assault. A recent Pentagon report found more than 70 sexual assaults are carried out against members of the U.S. military each day.




“To address the broader concerns that have arisen out of these allegations and other recent events, Secretary Hagel is directing all the services to re-train, re-credential, and re-screen all sexual assault prevention and response personnel and military recruiters,” Little said in a statement.




“Sexual assault is a crime and will be treated as such,” he added. “The safety, integrity, and well-being of every service member and the success of our mission hang in the balance. Secretary Hagel is looking urgently at every course of action to stamp out this deplorable conduct and ensure that those individuals up and down the chain of command who tolerate or engage in this behavior are appropriately held accountable.”
