Good Grief… Government Awards Even MORE Contracts To Canadian Company That Produced HealthCare.Gov Disaster

A dog returns to its vomit.

Since the ObamaCare exchange website launched on Oct. 1, government officials have signed at least five different agreements with CGI totaling $ 7 million, according to USASpending.gov, a government website that lists government contracts. The contracts were for computer and software development at the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Commerce, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

One contract, for instance, was signed Oct. 19 by Department of Commerce officials that gives CGI Federal $ 266,164 to provide “IT and Telecom Systems Development” for the Patent Office.

I want to say I’m surprised here, but honestly I’m now only surprised if/when government doesn’t make such awful, irresponsible decisions. This sort of madness is now very normal in American government.

Bossies 2013: The Best of Open Source Software Awards

InfoWorld – What do a McLaren Supercar, a refrigerator, a camera, a washing machine, and a cellphone have to do with open source? They’re
all examples of how a good pile of code can take on a new life when it’s set free with an open source license.

The same forces are turned loose in every corner of business computing, from application development and big data analytics
to the software that runs our desktops, data centers, and clouds. This year’s edition of our annual Best of Open Source Software
Awards rounds up more than 120 top projects in seven categories:

When the Android developers started releasing their operating system in 2007, they just wanted to colonize the world of mobile
phones. The iPhone was incredibly popular, and attracting any attention was a challenge. Choosing an open source license was
an easy path to partnerships with the phone manufacturers around the world. After all, giving people something free is an
easy way to make friends.

In 2013, something unexpected happened: The camera engineers noticed the explosion of creative new software apps for taking
photographs with mobile phones. Someone asked, “What if we put Android on our camera?” Now Android cameras with better lenses
can leverage the fertile software ecosystem of Android apps.

This is the way that open source software is supposed to work. Developers share, and software proliferates. Is it any surprise
that the folks at Samsung are now making an Android refrigerator? Or an Android clothes washer? Or an Android watch? Or that McLaren, the maker of overjuiced cars, wants the radio in its
car to run Android? Will there be Android in our doorbells, our cats, and our sofas? Only time and the programmers know. The
source code is out there and anyone can install it.

As in years past, this year’s collection of Bossie Award winners celebrates this tradition of sharing and cross-fertilization.
The open source software ecosystem continues to flourish and grow as old projects continue to snowball while new projects
emerge to tackle new needs.

The most successful projects, like Android, are finding new homes in unexpected places, and there seem to be more unexpected
places than ever.(( Throughout the Web and the enterprise, open source is less and less the exception and more and more the
rule. It’s in the server stacks, it’s on the desktop, and it’s a big, big part of the mobile ecology.

The server stack is growing increasingly open. Much of the software for maintaining our collection of servers is now largely
open source thanks to the proliferation of Linux, but the operating system is just the beginning. Almost everything built on top of — or below — the operating system is
also available as an open source package.

Andrew W.K. sets drumming record at MTV O Music Awards

LOS ANGELES | Fri Jun 21, 2013 2:48pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Musician Andrew W.K., the self-described “party king,” set a new world record after playing drums nonstop for 24 hours during MTV’s O Music Awards this week.

The O Music Awards, which give out accolades in a variety of fan-voted categories to musicians who make a significant impact online through social media, was streamed solely online as a 24-hour virtual concert.

The 34-year-old American, who was born Andrew Fetterly Wilkes-Krier, drummed for 24 hours from Wednesday to Thursday, earning the world record for Longest Drum Session in a Retail Store, MTV said in a statement.

A message left seeking confirmation from Guinness World Records, which verifies official records, was not immediately returned.

Artists such as the Jonas Brothers, Hanson, Atlas Genius and Kate Nash performed from the MTV studios in New York, Los Angeles and Nashville during the 24-hour live music festival that MTV billed as the largest online-only event of its kind.

The network said that more than 100 million votes had been cast by fans online.

Winners included Joe Jonas for Best Artist Instagram, rocker Jack White for Analog Genius and German pop group Tokio Hotel for Fan Army FTW (For The Win).

Yoko Ono, 80, wife of late Beatle John Lennon, won the Digital Genius Award for her online art and music work, as well as her digital presence on social media.

Newcomer band Darling Parade was also selected from 50 new artists to play at the MTV Video Music Awards in August.

Now in its third year, the O Music Awards has attempted to set a new record each year.

At the first O Music awards in Las Vegas in 2011, rapper Chiddy of rap duo Chiddy Bang set a Guinness World Record for the “longest freestyle rap” and “longest marathon rap” after performing for more than nine consecutive hours.

In 2012, rockers Flaming Lips set a record for most concerts played in 24 hours, as they performed in eight cities, traveling by bus, breaking rapper Jay Z’s previous record for seven cities in 24 hours via private jet.

MTV and its sister channels VH1 and CMT, which also participated in the O Music Awards, are part of Viacom Inc.

US awards video game mentality: Analyst

A political analyst says the US administration uses the concepts of sacrifice and heroism to deceive people and awards video game mentality, Press TV reports.

“The entire idea of heroism, military awards, sacrifice, is totally a con. They have been selling this to people for, really, hundreds of years or longer,” Gordon Duff said in an interview with Press TV on Friday.

He slammed the US government’s issuing of awards to drone operators and cyber attack directors, saying the idea of giving a medal for being thousands of miles away from a battle front is nothing new in the United States.

“You could criticize, and certainly everyone is, the idea that the United States is going to be giving…they call it ‘the geek’s medal’, to cyber warriors,” Duff added.

He went on to say that the US administration is actually awarding the people who play video games with the lives of others.

The analyst further pointed out that the American population has forgotten about all the wars going on as such wars are not reported in the papers and nobody mentions them.

“We saw nothing in the papers, no one wants to hear about it and certainly there is no interest in members of the military, their welfare, veterans and their families. We hear nothing of it and the population frankly, to be honest, could care less,” Duff concluded.

The Pentagon announced on February 13 that it is creating the Distinguished Warfare Medal to be awarded to those US troops who launch assassination drone strikes and direct cyber attacks.

Outgoing US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Wednesday that the US drone operators and those who direct cyber attacks would be eligible to receive the medal for their direct impact on a US military operations from afar.

The United States uses its assassination drones in Yemen, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Somalia, claiming that they target ‘terrorists.’ The attacks, however, have mostly led to massive civilian casualties.
