Viktor Yanukovich will hold a news conference in Russia’s Rostov-on-Don at 1700 local time (1300 GMT) on Friday, reports Itar-Tass citing sources close to Ukraine’s ousted president.

The site of the event will be announced later, the agency writes.

Yanukovich vanished over the weekend and his whereabouts have so far been unknown, with rumors claiming that he could have fled to Russia, or that he was still in Crimea.

He was reportedly last seen in Crimea.

The new Ukrainian authorities – who came to power following months of violent confrontation – put Yanukovich on an international wanted list on suspicion of involvement in mass killings during the riots in Kiev.

Dozens of people were killed in clashes between armed radical protesters and security forces.

On February 22, Ukrainian MPs voted to oust Yanukovich and hold a presidential vote on May 25.

  • A d v e r t i s e m e n t

Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, held an emergency session and passed a law on the return to the 2004 constitution without the president’s approval, saying that the president had removed himself from power.

Yanukovich described the situation as a coup d’etat and said he was not going to resign, as he was a “legitimately elected president.”

On February 23, the parliament voted for its speaker, Aleksandr Turchinov, as acting president of Ukraine.

The Ukrainian leader fled Kiev at the end of the worst week of violence since protests began in November, when he refused to sign an association agreement with the EU.

On Wednesday, Ukraine’s deputy prosecutor general said that the president was still on the country’s soil, without giving any further details.

On Thursday Viktor Yanukovich made a statement that he still considered himself the legitimate leader of Ukraine and warned against an internal military conflict. He also asked Russia to ensure his safety against the actions of “extremists” that took power in Ukraine.

A source inside the Russian authorities told Itar-Tass news agency that his security had reportedly been ensured on Russian territory “in connection with the fact that President Yanukovich appealed to the Russian authorities”.

FBI had human source in contact with bin Laden as far back as 1993

In a revelation missing from the official investigations of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the FBI placed a human source in direct contact with Osama bin Laden in 1993 and ascertained that the al Qaeda leader was looking to finance terrorist attacks in the United States, according to court testimony in a little-noticed employment dispute case.

The information the FBI gleaned back then was so specific that it helped thwart a terrorist plot against a Masonic lodge in Los Angeles, the court records reviewed by The Washington Times show.

“It was the only source I know in the bureau where we had a source right in al Qaeda, directly involved,” Edward J. Curran, a former top official in the FBI’s Los Angeles office, told the court in support of a discrimination lawsuit filed against the bureau by his former agent Bassem Youssef.

NEW YORK/LONDON (Reuters) – Goldman Sachs (GS.N) plans to resume talks with parties interested in buying its metals warehousing business now that new exchange rules have been released, a source familiar with the matter said on Monday.

The talks with potential buyers, which are largely firms based outside the United States, are not part of a formal sales process, the source said.

Metro International Trading Services, which stores aluminum and other metals as part of the London Metal Exchange (LME) warehouse system, has been at the center of a controversy around Wall Street’s ownership of physical commodity assets.

That controversy heated up after the bank was accused of boosting wait times and prices for metals consumers including makers of drink cans and cars.

More than a dozen parties have expressed an interest in buying the business, according to the Financial Times, which first reported the talks earlier on Monday.

The paper said several of the potential buyers were Chinese firms, including Chinese insurer Ping An and China Minmetals. Brazilian bank Grupo BTG Pactual SA (BBTG11.SA) is also actively looking at warehouse assets, trade and industry sources say.

Goldman looked at a possible sale of Metro earlier this year but put those efforts on hold while the LME reviewed the rules governing warehouses. The exchange earlier this month proposed new rules to crack down on the wait times for metals delivery, providing more clarity for warehouse owners.

The Federal Reserve announced a review of Wall Street’s role in physical commodities trading in July.

Goldman has recently insisted it remains committed to its commodities businesses even as rivals, including JPMorgan (JPM.N), have announced they are selling assets and exiting physical trading.

Fed Vice Chairman Janet Yellen, speaking last week at a Senate hearing on her nomination to become chairman of the central bank, said for the first time that the Fed may create new rules as part of its review.

Regulatory and legal experts say the most likely target is the banks’ direct ownership of warehouses, power plants, oil storage tanks and other infrastructure.

Goldman has said that Metro was bought under a “private equity exemption” that would allow the bank to own the business for up to 10 years as long as it operates at arm’s length from its commodities traders.

Fed-regulated banks are generally barred from owning physical assets such as warehouses and pipelines, but Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley (MS.N) have said they have the right to retain businesses they operated prior to converting to commercial banks at the peak of the financial crisis.

The bank bought Metro in 2010 for around $ 500 million.

Nov 13 (Reuters) – Crocs Inc, known for its colorful clogs, is considering going private, among other strategic options, a person familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.

The company has held talks with a small group of private equity firms, including Blackstone Group LP and KKR & Co LP, the person said, asking not to be identified because the discussions are confidential.

Representatives for Crocs, Blackstone and KKR either declined to comment or did not immediately respond to requests for comment. News of the talks was reported almost simultaneously earlier on Wednesday by Bloomberg News and the Wall Street Journal.

Crocs shares were up 9 percent at $ 13.79 on Wednesday afternoon on the Nasdaq.

Crocs posted a 2 percent decline in sales for the third quarter, hurt by weakness in the Americas and Japan. The company said it saw less discretionary spending for footwear, apparel and other consumer goods in the U.S.

“I wish I could tell you we were expecting a big improvement in consumer confidence in the U.S. throughout the year, but we are not,” Crocs Chief Executive John McCarvel told analysts on the company’s earnings call last month. Bossies 2013: The Best of Open Source Software Awards

InfoWorld – What do a McLaren Supercar, a refrigerator, a camera, a washing machine, and a cellphone have to do with open source? They’re
all examples of how a good pile of code can take on a new life when it’s set free with an open source license.

The same forces are turned loose in every corner of business computing, from application development and big data analytics
to the software that runs our desktops, data centers, and clouds. This year’s edition of our annual Best of Open Source Software
Awards rounds up more than 120 top projects in seven categories:

When the Android developers started releasing their operating system in 2007, they just wanted to colonize the world of mobile
phones. The iPhone was incredibly popular, and attracting any attention was a challenge. Choosing an open source license was
an easy path to partnerships with the phone manufacturers around the world. After all, giving people something free is an
easy way to make friends.

In 2013, something unexpected happened: The camera engineers noticed the explosion of creative new software apps for taking
photographs with mobile phones. Someone asked, “What if we put Android on our camera?” Now Android cameras with better lenses
can leverage the fertile software ecosystem of Android apps.

This is the way that open source software is supposed to work. Developers share, and software proliferates. Is it any surprise
that the folks at Samsung are now making an Android refrigerator? Or an Android clothes washer? Or an Android watch? Or that McLaren, the maker of overjuiced cars, wants the radio in its
car to run Android? Will there be Android in our doorbells, our cats, and our sofas? Only time and the programmers know. The
source code is out there and anyone can install it.

As in years past, this year’s collection of Bossie Award winners celebrates this tradition of sharing and cross-fertilization.
The open source software ecosystem continues to flourish and grow as old projects continue to snowball while new projects
emerge to tackle new needs.

The most successful projects, like Android, are finding new homes in unexpected places, and there seem to be more unexpected
places than ever.(( Throughout the Web and the enterprise, open source is less and less the exception and more and more the
rule. It’s in the server stacks, it’s on the desktop, and it’s a big, big part of the mobile ecology.

The server stack is growing increasingly open. Much of the software for maintaining our collection of servers is now largely
open source thanks to the proliferation of Linux, but the operating system is just the beginning. Almost everything built on top of — or below — the operating system is
also available as an open source package.

NEW YORK (AP) — Alex Rodriguez figures to have a one-of-a-kind day on Monday. He’ll receive a lengthy suspension from baseball and then head to the ballpark to play for the New York Yankees for the first time this season.

A-Rod’s suspension, likely through the 2014 season, was to be announced as part of Major League Baseball’s latest drug investigation, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press.

Major League Baseball informed the Yankees on Sunday that A-Rod will be suspended for his links to a clinic accused of distributing banned performance-enhancing drugs, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because no statement was authorized.

But the person also said A-Rod will be eligible to play while he appeals the penalty to an arbitrator.

The Yankees weren’t told the exact length of the suspension, though they were under the impression it will be through the 2014 season, the person said.

The Yankees star could get a shorter penalty if he agrees to give up the right to file a grievance and force the case before an arbitrator, the person added.

A suspension from Monday through 2014 would total 214 games, and an unsuccessful appeal could stretch serving the penalty into 2015.

In the era before players and owners agreed to a drug plan in late 2002, arbitrators often shortened drug suspensions — in the case of Yankees pitcher Steve Howe, his penalty was cut from a lifetime ban to 119 days.

MLB planned an announcement for noon EDT Monday, a second person familiar with the deliberations said, also on condition of anonymity.

Rodriguez is the most famous player linked to the now-closed Biogenesis of America anti-aging clinic in Florida, and the Yankees expect him to be charged with interfering with MLB’s investigation, resulting in a harsher penalty than the other 13 players facing discipline.

Barring an agreement, Rodriguez’s appeal would be heard by arbitrator Fredric Horowitz.

Adding to the drama: The 38-year-old Rodriguez, a three-time AL MVP, was due to rejoin the Yankees for their series opener at the Chicago White Sox, his first big league appearance since last October’s playoffs. He’s been rehabbing since hip surgery in January.

“He’s in there, and I’m going to play him,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Sunday after New York’s 6-3 loss at San Diego.

Yankees outfielder Curtis Granderson was excited A-Rod could play during an appeal.

“I want him back with us. This is arguably one of the best hitters of all time,” he said. “Having him in the lineup is obviously going to be very positive for us.”

New York is a season-high 9½ games out of first place in the AL East and 4½ out in the race for the second wild-card spot.

“We’re going to be happy to see him back in the lineup, especially the way we’ve been playing,” second baseman Robinson Cano said. “He can come up and help us win some games.”

All-Stars Nelson Cruz of Texas, Jhonny Peralta of Detroit and Everth Cabrera of San Diego were among those who could get 50-game suspensions from the probe, sparked in January when Miami New Times published documents linking many players to the closed clinic in Coral Gables, Fla.

Many players were expected to agree to penalties and start serving them immediately, but an appeal by a first-offender under the drug agreement would postpone his suspension until after a decision by an arbitrator.

Milwaukee outfielder Ryan Braun, the 2011 NL MVP, agreed July 22 to a 65-game ban through the rest of the 2013 season for his role with Biogenesis.

Braun was given a 50-game suspension for elevated testosterone that was overturned last year by arbitrator Shyam Das because of issues with the handling of the urine sample.

Since spring training, the union has said it will consider stiffer penalties starting in 2014.

“The home runs that are hit because a guy’s on performance-enhancing substances, those ruin somebody’s ERA, which ruins their arbitration case, which ruins their salary,” Los Angeles Angels pitcher C.J. Wilson said. “So it’s a whole domino effect.”

Rodriguez’s return from hip surgery was slowed by a quadriceps injury. He completed his second minor league injury rehabilitation assignment on Saturday night, a two-day stay at Double-A Trenton. Rodriguez walked in all four plate appearances, a day after hitting a two-run homer.

Following Friday night’s game, Rodriguez all but said he thought MLB and the Yankees were conspiring to keep him from getting back to the big leagues.

“There is more than one party that benefits from me not ever stepping back on the field. And that’s not my teammates and it’s not the Yankee fans,” he said, adding: “When all this stuff is going on in the background and people are finding creative ways to cancel your contract and stuff like that, I think that’s concerning for me.”

He last played in October, going 3 for 25 (.120) with no RBIs in the playoffs. Rodriguez is owed $ 8,568,306 of his $ 28 million salary from Monday through the rest of the season and $ 86 million for the final four years of his contract with the Yankees.

Girardi didn’t think A-Rod’s arrival would create more turmoil than the Yankees already are used to.

“I don’t suspect it’ll be awkward. Most of these guys know him as a teammate and have laughed a lot with Alex and been around Alex a lot,” he said. “I think it’ll be business as usual. I’m sure there will be more media there, obviously, tomorrow, but I think that’s probably more for Alex to deal with than the rest of the guys. I don’t think it’ll be a big deal.”

Lawyers involved in the drug cases have been trying to reach agreements that would avoid grievances. Deal or no deal, Commissioner Bud Selig was prepared to announce discipline.

Peralta didn’t think the possibility of a suspension made it harder to focus on the field.

“Nothing to worry about,” he said. “Play the game how I play every day, and try to enjoy every day.”

Asked what action he would take if penalized, Cruz said: “I haven’t decided what I’m going to do.”

There have been 43 suspensions under the major league drug agreement since testing with penalties for first offenses started in 2005. The longest penalty served has been a 100-game suspension by San Francisco pitcher Guillermo Mota for a positive test for Clenbuterol, his second drug offense.

In addition, Tampa Bay outfielder Manny Ramirez retired two years ago rather than face a 100-game suspension. When he decided to return for 2012 the penalty was cut to 50 games because he already had sat out almost an entire season.

Colorado catcher Eliezer Alfonzo was suspended for 100 games in September 2011, but the penalty was rescinded the following May because of handling issues similar to the ones involving Braun’s urine sample.

Report: NSA contract worker is surveillance source

(AP) — A 29-year-old American who works as contract employee at the National Security Agency is the source of The Guardian’s disclosures about the U.S. government’s secret surveillance programs, the London newspaper reported Sunday.

The leaks have reopened the post-Sept. 11 debate about privacy concerns versus heightened measure to protect against terrorist attacks, and led the NSA to ask the Justice Department to conduct a criminal investigation.

The Guardian said it was publishing the identity of Edward Snowden, a former technical assistant for the CIA and current employee of defense contractor Booz Allen Hamilton, at his own request.

“I have no intention of hiding who I am because I know I have done nothing wrong,” he was quoted as saying.

The director of national intelligence, James Clapper, has decried the revelation of the intelligence-gathering programs as reckless, and in the past days has taken the rare step of declassifying some details about them to respond to media reports about counterterrorism techniques employed by the government.

An Internet scouring program, code-named PRISM, allows the NSA and FBI to tap directly into the servers of major U.S. Internet companies such as Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook and AOL, scooping out emails, video chats, instant messages and more to track foreign nationals who are suspected of terrorism or espionage.

The NSA also is collecting the telephone records of millions of American customers, but not actual conversations.

President Barack Obama, Clapper and others have said the programs are authorized by Congress and subject to strict supervision of a secret court.

Snowden is quoted as saying that his “sole motive is to inform the public as to that which is done in their name and that which is done against them.”

The Guardian reported that Snowden was working in an NSA office in Hawaii when he copied the last of the documents he planned to disclose and told supervisors that he needed to be away for a few weeks to receive treatment for epilepsy.

He left for Hong Kong on May 20 and has remained there since, according to the newspaper. Snowden is quoted as saying he chose that city because “they have a spirited commitment to free speech and the right of political dissent”, and because he believed it was among the spots on the globes that could and would resist the dictates of the U.S. government.

Snowden is quoted as saying he hopes the publicity the leaks have cause will provide him some protection and that he sees asylum, perhaps in Iceland, as a possibility.

“I feel satisfied that this was all worth it. I have no regrets,” Snowden told the newspaper.

He was said to have worked on IT security for the CIA and by 2007, was stationed with diplomatic cover in Geneva, responsible for maintaining computer network security. That gave him clearance to a range of classified documents, according to the report.

“Much of what I saw in Geneva really disillusioned me about how my government functions and what its impact is in the world,” he says. “I realized that I was part of something that was doing far more harm than good.”
