Surveillance Camera Man: Antagonism as Activism?

So there is a guy on Youtube who goes by the name of Surveillance Camera Man, and over the past year he has uploaded five videos which are comprised of various scenes of him wandering around and filming people without their permission, presumably to see what kind of reaction he would get. He comes off as a bit of a creep, though, because when people ask him what he is doing, all he ever really says is: “Shooting a video.” A lot of people become belligerent rather quickly, which is understandable considering that they have a camera shoved into their face by a man who refuses to answer their questions. (I almost feel bad for the guy on the phone who keeps saying: “This is a private phone call!” The irony being, of course, that there is no longer any such thing as “private” phone calls…or texts…or emails.)

But this is where I am torn on the methods employed by SCM: because on the one hand, you could argue that he is raising awareness about the fact that we are all constantly being monitored/recorded, and that he is also pointing out the hypocrisy of our nonchalance over these issues when we are not being confronted with them face-to-face. But I feel like he is undermining his own message by coming off as antagonistic and unnecessarily confrontational, rather than engaging in some form of further communication with those individuals who he is filming. Sure, getting them all riled up is probably more entertaining for those watching at home, thus resulting in more Youtube hits. But with a bit of tweaking, this could potentially be a fantastic form of in-your-face activism which encourages dialogue and further action, rather than resulting in the filmer being chased around and screamed at. Here is an idea about how any one of us – as concerned citizens and individuals – could very easily take this concept a step further…

Once a year, there are schools and universities all over the country which participate in something called The National Day of Silence. The idea is to not speak for the entire day and, in so doing, your silence is supposed to represent and draw attention to the silence which exists about issues relating to LGBT bullying and harassment. If someone tries to talk to you or asks you a question, you hand them a pre-printed card which gives a brief description about The Day of Silence and why you are participating. As Good German pointed out in a recent post, this coming Tuesday (February 11th) will be The Day We Fight Back Against Mass Surveillance, and it seems like you could combine these two methods – that of SCM and NDoS – in order to create an incredibly effective form of activism…

Imagine walking up to people with a recording device of some kind and just standing there silently, waiting for them to respond and then, once they ask you what you are doing – instead of waiting for them to freak out and become hostile – you could hand them a card which explains that they are being monitored/recorded all the time. The card could include a link to The Day We Fight Back website, as well as the site for The US Freedom Act (which is an acronym for “Uniting and Strengthening America by Fulfilling Rights and Ending Eavesdropping, Dragnet-Collection and Online Monitoring Act”, a piece of legislation which has been written by Jim Sensenbrenner, a conservative Republican who co-authored the Patriot Act and who now feels that things have gotten “out of hand”!!!)

The final sentence on the card could say something to the effect of: “If you are as concerned about these issues as I am, please consider joining me in recording your friends and family, your co-workers, and complete strangers on the street. Together, we can help put an end to mass surveillance.” Imagine the potential impact that something like this could have on those individuals who might otherwise be apathetic when it comes to taking action on issues such as these! That brief flare of alarm which people feel upon realizing that they are being recorded by a stranger – that hesitant moment of discomfort and unease – could be the kind of real-world jump-start which is necessary in order to grab their attention for just long enough to impart a message which could potentially ripple forth…

Duggan shooting prompts camera move

Mark Duggan’s aunt Carole, speaking outside court: “He was executed”

Firearms officers are to wear video cameras in an attempt to be “more open” following the death of Mark Duggan, the Met Police Commissioner has said.

Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe admitted the force must “do more to build trust” after a jury found the 29-year-old was lawfully killed.

Mr Duggan was shot dead by police in August 2011 in Tottenham, north London.

Sir Bernard will meet community leaders in Haringey to discuss how “confidence” in the Met can be improved.

The family of Mr Duggan reacted with anger after the jury concluded by a majority of eight to two that he was lawfully killed by officers.

‘Lost a friend’

Following the conclusion of the inquest at the Royal Courts of Justice on Wednesday, his aunt Carole Duggan said he had been “executed”.

Sir Bernard said: “I want to express my sympathy to Mark Duggan’s family. They’ve lost a son and brother and their friends have lost a friend.

Sir Bernard Hogan Howe: “We need to do more to build trust”

“That’s a terrible event for everybody and they’ve had to wait a long time for this verdict.

“I hope that everybody’s able to accept the verdict of the jury. It’s a jury of ordinary Londoners who have come to a verdict which we all have to accept.

“I do acknowledge that we need to do more to build trust with the people of London, and there are things that we need to learn from this event.

“First of all, I want our officers to be able to be more open when it comes to the investigations that follow these events.

“In pursuance of that we’re going to ask them to wear video cameras, so that we can record this type of incident, and I’m going to meet many people from across London, leaders from the Haringey community, to see what we need to do to work together to improve the confidence in the Met for those members of society who may feel that this has damaged their confidence in any way.”

‘Vigorous review’

The jury of seven women and three men was asked to answer five questions over Mr Duggan’s death.

The panel concluded he did not have a gun when he was shot by officers who surrounded a minicab he was travelling in.

But the jury said it was more likely than not that Mr Duggan had thrown a gun from the vehicle just before he was killed. The weapon was found about 20ft (6m) away from the scene.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is currently conducting an investigation into his death.

The Duggan’s family lawyer Marcia Willis Stewart said after the inquest: “We can’t believe this was the outcome. He had no gun in his hand, yet he was shot, he was murdered.

“To us, that is unlawful killing.”

She added the family would seek a meeting with the IPCC, their MP David Lammy, and MP Keith Vaz, in order to ensure the IPCC carries out “a vigorous review”.

Deborah Coles, from the charity Inquest, said Mr Duggan’s family were considering whether to apply for the decision to be judicially reviewed.

After Mr Duggan was shot, rioting spread across London and other parts of England in what became some of the worst disturbances in decades.

What’s your reaction to the inquest jury’s conclusion? Do you live in Tottenham? Send us your comments using the form below.

Okay, that does it. I haven’t yet “succumbed” to a “smart phone”; although I realize having the internet and communications tech in one’s pocket is quite alluring, I’m still just using a voice/text clamshell, with a crapola camera and old-fashioned number pad. I hate the phone, but hey, it does the job.

I was just considering over the last few months springing for a handy-dandy pocket-net device like the kids all have, even my brother is rude enough to sit and browse the internet during family gatherings (which happen only 1-2 times per year). I find it quite sad that people can’t simply sit and talk without resorting to their ‘iphones’.

Just yesterday I was looking at smartphones for sale; several hundred dollars!!! To be “hooked in” to the NSA?

Um, no. I’ll stick with my crap-shell disposable phone and my home PC. Camera taped over.

Reminds me of my Mom, who turns 75 on Thursday – she still as landline phones in her home, although my bro got her an iphone a couple/few years ago (which I’m glad of, because she needs to have a cellular). But, the dinosaur variety work for voice, and too difficult to “text” (which eliminates doing so while driving), and is perfectly adequate for keeping in touch with my family and friends.

Yikes. This society makes me shudder.

But, then again, it may all just be sensationalist divisive-rumormongering. It’s awful to not be able to trust ANYONE or ANYTHING having to do with media or government.

Does bizarre footage from the moments preceding her ‘Freemason’ rant on the House floor suggest Dianne Reidy was a victim of mind control?

A man with white hair appears to give Reidy a nod, causing her demeanor to immediately shift as she enters a trance-like state before walking towards the podium to deliver her rant. The man then immediately goes to his cellphone to send a text message.

Also learn why we never actually heard Reidy’s actual rant when she was stood in front of the speaker’s podium – the media simply dubbed over her words from when she was being dragged away in a different part of the building.

Driver"s remarkable escape from giant boulder landslide caught on camera

Please note: this video has no sound

Lai Hong-wei, the driver who filmed the extraordinary footage with a camera mounted on his car’s dashboard, later told reporters he was left shocked by what took place just metres in front of him.

The white saloon in front was hit by a sudden landslide, suffering severe damage, but was miraculously missed by a giant boulder that came to rest just inches from the vehicle.

Incredibly, the driver and front seat passenger made it away with only minor injuries.

Footage from local television news network ETTV showed the extensive damage to the car caused by the landslide that was triggered by Tropical Storm ‘Kong-Rey’ and its days of heavy downpours.

The Central Weather Bureau said Taiwan could continue to see torrential rain across the island until next Monday.

Three people were reported dead on Friday after the storm flooded Taiwan.

Camera captures voices without a microphone

Throat movements get decoded to reveal sounds of speech

By Meghan Rosen

MONTREAL — Eavesdroppers might not have to lip-read to listen in on a far-off conversation. Using a high-speed camera pointed at the throat, scientists can decipher a person’s words without relying on a microphone.

By snapping thousands of images per second, researchers recorded every wavering wobble of neck flesh that accompanied sounds floating out from a person’s voice box. A computer program then turned the recorded skin vibrations into sound waves, Yasuhiro Oikawa of Waseda University in Tokyo reported June 3 at the International Congress on Acoustics.

Standard lip-reading software tracks lip twitches, tongue waggles and jaw motions as a person’s mouth forms a word. Some programs are sophisticated enough to recognize different languages, but the computer doesn’t offer much more than a transcript, Oikawa said.

Textual information is important, but so is intonation, pitch and volume, he said. “We get a sense of a speaker’s feeling from their voice.”

Microphones have problems, too: A mic often records too much background noise — especially outside, where the whooshing whistle of the wind or the loud plop of a raindrop can drown out a person’s voice.

So Oikawa and colleagues looked for a new way to record speech that could capture vocal tones.

Using a high-speed camera, the researchers zoomed in on the throats of two volunteers and recorded them saying the Japanese word tawara, which means straw bale or bag. The team’s camera recorded at 10,000 frames per second; the typical rate for a movie projected in a theater is 24.

At the same time, Oikawa’s team recorded the volunteers’ words with a standard microphone and a vibrometer, a device that measured vibrations of their skin.

The throat vibrations recorded by the camera looked similar to the vibrations picked up by the microphone and the vibrometer, Oikawa said.

And when the team ran the camera’s vibration data through a computer program, they could reconstruct the volunteers’ voices well enough to understand the word spoken, Oikawa said. Before the end of the year, he thinks he may be able to record and play back a full sentence using the high-speed camera technique.

The technique should allow scientists to hear words even if there’s a lot of background noise, said physicist Claire Prada of the National Center for Scientific Research in Paris. The work is promising, she said, but “it’s still just proof of principle.”

But other scientists at the presentation seemed skeptical. Mechanical engineer Weikang Jiang of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China noted that Oikawa did not play audio of reconstructed voices; instead he showed pictures of the sound waves. Jiang praised the work’s novelty, but said, “He didn’t show us the results.”

Next, Oikawa wants to focus the camera on a person’s cheeks to look for more skin spots that jiggle during speech. Analyzing more vibrating areas could give researchers extra info about a person’s voice, and that could improve voice reconstruction.

Possibilities of Still Photography

Still Life: Decisions for Your Shot

Still photography is a curious field of photography. Because still can be both simple and complex, natural or created, it lends itself to great diversity. Deciding which approach you will take is sometimes the most difficult part of the process!

If you happen to be starting out in still, then a general rule of thumb will be to keep things as simple as possible, at least until you feel comfortable with all of the elements. From perspective to depth of field to lighting and even composition, you\’ll find that keeping your scene to one, two, or three subjects will be more than enough to experiment with! Once confident, you can then easily transition to some of the more complex scenes.

Keep in mind that the more you add to your scene at the beginning, the more difficult it will be to keep your lighting on target. To remedy this, consider placing a reflector on the dimly lit side of your scene. The more complex your scene, the more attention to lighting will be required.

Natural Still

If you\’re planning to shoot natural scenes, prepare for what you will encounter in nature. Preparing for a hunting trip is much the same as preparing for shooting natural scenes. It may be quite some time before the perfect shot is in place, so be sure to have the equipment, supplies, and physical endurance you\’ll need for your trip.

Some of your equipment will include items that will help you keep control of your scene. While a tripod is an excellent tool for stabilizing your shot, the drawback is carrying it around until you have found your spot in nature. Still, other options might include miniature tripods that will carry easily and still provide you with the stability you need.

For materials, be sure that you have adequate water, food, and clothing that is appropriate for the weather. Not bringing the proper amount of any of these will cause your trip to be a long one! Consult the weather forecast and plan accordingly before venturing out for the day.

Not only will preparation for natural pictures be a challenge, but also the quality can be a challenge. Good quality still life pictures can be even more challenging to photograph than those that you coordinate. That\’s because they are often close up, so it\’s easy to spot imperfections like a blemish on a leaf, fruit, or animal that would usually pass unnoticed. Pay special attention to detail of natural still photography is your passion.

Still Life: Other Tips to Consider

For the best results with still photography, consider holding the camera, not from your own height, but instead from the height of your subject. For variety, you can also capture the same scene from different angles to give your audience unique perspectives. From a handful of photos, you may soon find that the art of photography has really just become an adventure in creativity!

For those who might not have the chance to get close enough to your subject, think about the possibilities when it comes to framing. This might be just the method for removing empty space while allowing you to photograph your subject in their natural setting. With these simple tips in mind, you can go out into the world of still photography prepared for the challenges this exciting field brings!

For more detail on photography and what can be done with the right equipment, see what other photographers are doing and what they\’re learning in this field.
