The iron fist of Maulana Fazlullah

Maulana Fazlullah, the new Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leader, is a ruthless fighter who is vehemently anti-state and unamenable to peace talks.

Fazlullah was elected as TTP commander by a consultative council of the group on November 7, almost a week after Hakimullah Mehsud, the group’s former leader, was killed by a US drone in the tribal area of North Waziristan.

He is the first commander of the group not to come from North Waziristan, hailing instead from the northwestern valley of Swat, where he waged a bloody war against the Pakistani state from 2007 to 2009.

As chief of the local chapter of the TTP in Swat, Fazlullah drove civil and military authorities out of the area in 2007, before finally signing a peace agreement with the government in 2009.

The agreement, dubbed the “Nizam-e-Adl” (system of justice), granted the TTP virtual control over Swat and implemented their interpretation of Sharia law, in exchange for the cessation of hostilities.

It soon disintegrated, however, when Fazlullah’s men attempted to expand their sphere of control to neighbouring Buner district.

As a result, Pakistani forces moved into Swat for the second time in two years, resulting in hundreds of deaths and millions of civilians displaced. Fazlullah was finally driven out of the valley by September 2009, with several of his top commanders captured.

But while the government and civilians rebuilt lives in the valley, Fazlullah continued to conduct operations in Swat remotely, from neighbouring Dir district and, as many locals tell Al Jazeera, the Afghan border provinces of Kunar and Nuristan.

From his base, Fazlullah ordered the targeted killings of elders who led peace committees against the Taliban, as well as rights activists. Among the dozens of people the Taliban killed or attempted to kill during this time was Malala Yousafzai, the schoolgirl activist who rose to global prominence following the attempt on her life.

Early history

Born in 1974 in the village of Kuza Bandai, Fazlullah spent his teenage years selling wooden shuttering and doing odd jobs selling items off pushcarts.

He then enrolled in an Islamic school, or madrassa, run by Sufi Mohammed, a prominent anti-government cleric and leader of the Tehreek-e-Nifaz Shariat-e-Muhammadi (TNSM). The TNSM had for years been agitating against the government to have Sharia law imposed in the Swat valley.

Fazlullah went on to join TNSM chief Mohammed when led a group of fighters from Swat into Afghanistan to fight US forces following the invasion of that country in 2001. He also married Mohammed’s daughter.

By 2004, having returned from the Afghan war, Fazlullah started a local radio station in the valley, hosting a one-hour programme that, to begin with, focused on women’s role in Islam and society.

The show spread his ideas regarding a strict intepretation of Sharia law in all spheres of life. He also took a stance against polio vaccinations for children, dubbing them a “Jewish” or “Western” conspiracy to sterilise Muslims.

‘Sharia or martyrdom’

His status as Mohammed’s son-in-law, a veteran of the Afghan war and his radio show all gained him increased prominence, and he was soon rivalling his father-in-law in leading the call for Sharia law in the valley.

His rise culiminated in him leading Eid prayers in the valley’s Kabal ground in 2007, an occasion that saw thousands fall in line behind him as he raised the cry of “Sharia or martyrdom!”

With such support, Fazlullah opened a madrassa of his own at Imam Dehri, imparting both religious knowledge and paramilitary training to those who enrolled, with a view to carrying out “jihad” against both the US and Pakistan.

By late 2007, Fazlullah’s chapter of the Tehreek-e-Taliban had established control over large parts of the valley, weathering a military operation that resulted in the Nizam-e-Adl peace deal.

His group had already established a parallel court system, and he outlawed the operation of businesses such as CD shops, which his group believed to be against Islam. They also carried out attacks against dozens of girls schools, based on the assertion that women should only receive an Islamic education.

During his time in control, Fazlullah ruled over Swat with an iron fist, publically executing both those who would stood against him and those who his group deemed to have violated Sharia law.

Blow to peace talks

Having been targeted in two military operations and engaged in a failed peace deal with Pakistan’s government in the past, it is unclear if Fazlullah will accept an offer of a return to peace talks in his new capacity as overall TTP chief.

Following his election, Shahidullah Shahid, a spokesperson for the TTP, told Al Jazeera that Fazlullah was picked because he was a hardliner who had refused to surrender to Pakistani forces.

The Reuters news agency quoted Shahid as saying: “There will be no more talks as Mullah Fazlullah is already against negotiations with the Pakistan government.

“All governments play double games with us. In the name of peace talks, they deceived us and killed our people. We are 100 percent sure that Pakistan fully supports the United States in its drone strikes.”

CAIRO – Egypt’s embattled Muslim Brotherhood on Tuesday named a hardline new “general guide” hours after authorities arrested the movement’s senior leader, sources said.

The temporary appointment of Mahmoud Ezzat, a 69-year-old doctor, came amid a deepening crackdown on the Islamist movement of ousted President Mohammed Morsi.

“In the media, Ezzat has been personified as the Brotherhood’s ‘iron man,’ embodying its reputation for top-down decision-making,” U.S.-based think tank the Washington Institute said in an online bio.

Ezzat will be filling in for Mohammed Badie, 70, who was detained at an apartment in northeast Cairo early on Tuesday. His arrest followed the deaths of 25 police officers in a militant ambush in Sinai and a court ruling announcing the possibility that the jailed ex-President Hosni Mubarak could soon walk free from prison.

According to the Washington Institute, Ezzat “is currently a professor in Zagazig University’s College of Medicine, where his colleagues have included [former] President Morsi.”

Badie’s arrest is a blow to Muslim Brotherhood at a time when authorities are cracking down on its leaders and mid-ranking officials across the country. 

Also on Tuesday, the Egyptian military said it had killed a journalist working for state-run newspaper Al Ahram and wounded another at a military checkpoint near the city of Alexandria during the dusk-to-dawn curfew.

The two journalists were driving towards a checkpoint but failed to heed warnings to slow down or stop, the military said in a statement.  After warning shots were ignored, driver Tareq Abdul Raouf, a reporter with Al Ahram newspaper. That forced the vehicle to swerve and ram into a light pole, which injured a second passenger, journalist Hamed Fathy El Berbery, who is with another state-run newspaper Al Gomhouria.

An Egyptian court has ordered Hosni Mubarak to be set free for the first time in more than two years; meanwhile, police arrested a key spiritual leader in the nation. NBC’s chief foreign correspondent, Richard Engel, says these two political shifts could mean the new military-backed government wants to impose a Mubarak-like system.

“No excessive gunfire was opened on the car in question nor any killing of those in it intended,” the statement said, calling on people to adhere to the curfew to facilitate the work of security services. 

Journalists are exempt from the curfew, which the government ordered after security forces broke up two pro-Morsi protest camps last week.  Around 900 people, including more than 100 soldiers and police, have been killed since then. 

The court ruling potentially paving the way for former authoritarian president Mubarak’s release poses a dilemma for the military-backed government. 

Mubarak has been in detention since April 2011 and is widely despised for widespread abuses and repression during his 29 years in power.

He was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison last year for failing to stop the killing of some 900 protesters in the 18-day uprising which ended his rule. His sentence was overturned on appeal and he is now being retried, along with his security chief and six top police commanders.

You should not brush your hair with excessive force. It may seem that doing this will help the hair be softer but it just causes issues. If you do have to brush more than normally, make sure that you\’re brushing very gently.

A combination of mayonnaise and eggs is terrific for hair. While this is not what you would normally think to put in your hair, it helps out immensely. It is as simple as combining the two, spreading it through your hair, and then allowing it to work its magic under a shower cap for around 20 minutes. Ensure you completely rinse it off after this time.

Curling and straightening irons can do lots for hair, but you need to only use them occasionally. Too much heat will dry out hair, leaving it fragile and dull. You should only iron your hair weekly at most. If your hair is parched, take a vacation from heat styling.

Refrain from using too many appliances on your hair to keep it strong and healthy. Curling irons and blow dryers can strain your hair, causing it to be impossible or hard to repair. It wise to give a hair a break, at times, and stay away from the heat.

When hair conditioning, be sure to spread the conditioner evenly throughout your hair for best results. Also, it is best you leave the conditioner in your hair for several minutes so it can soak in before rinsing out.

If you utilize a blow dryer, make sure it is moved around frequently so it does not stay focused on one spot. That way, serious damage resulting from heat can be prevented.

To reduce frizzy hair after washing your hair, let it air dry. Avoid rubbing your hair vigorously with a towel, as this creates frizz. If your hair needs to be dry really fast, try blotting with the towel instead of rubbing it or using heat.

It is unnecessary to wash your hair every day. When you wash hair, you strip it of the protective and natural moisture, and your hair is more likely to be damaged. One way to do this is to wash with shampoo one day and just rinse without shampoo the following day. Or, wash your hair weekly if you are not prone to oily hair.

Your hair is a crucial part to representing your identity. You don\’t need to be the king or queen of hairstyles, but grooming your hair well sends a positive message to others. Use the tools you have learned here to take extra special care of your hair and send out the right message to the world!
