Man Who Shot at White House Sentenced to 25 Years

An Idaho man who pleaded guilty to firing an assault rifle at the White House in 2011 has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.

A federal judge in Washington sentenced Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez on Monday.

Prosecutors had asked he spend 27 ½ years in prison for the shooting. No one was injured, but prosecutors say Ortega-Hernandez hit the executive mansion about eight times and did nearly $ 100,000 in damage.

Ortega-Hernandez’s lawyers argued he was suffering from extreme depression and mental stress at the time of the shooting and was under the misguided belief that Armageddon was coming. They asked for a 10-year sentence.

Prosecutors initially charged Ortega-Hernandez with attempting to assassinate President Barack Obama but agreed to drop the charge as part of a plea deal last year.

Pakistani Taliban commander shot dead in Waziristan

A top commander of the Pakistani Taliban was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on Monday in the militant stronghold of North Waziristan, security sources and family members in the tribal region told Reuters.

Asmatullah Shaheen was on the Pakistan army’s list of twenty most wanted Taliban commanders, and had a $ 120,000 bounty placed on his head since 2009.

He was appointed as interim chief of the Pakistan Taliban following the killing of Hakimullah Mehsud, the previous leader, in a US drone strike on Nov. 1.

Shaheen’s killers ambushed his car as it passed through Dargah Mandi, a village three miles northwest of Miranshah, the regional capital of North Waziristan.

“Unidentified gunmen in another car shot and killed Shaheen as well as the driver and guards,” a family member told Reuters.

Security sources also confirmed the deaths.

The Pakistani Taliban insurgency is fighting to topple Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s democratically elected government and impose Sharia law in the nuclear-armed nation.

Attacks have been on the rise since Sharif came to power in May, promising a negotiated end to violence. His stance unnerved global powers already worried that withdrawal of most US-led troops from Afghanistan in 2014 would leave a security vacuum.

Peace talks between the Pakistani government and Taliban insurgents began on Feb. 6 but broke down last week after insurgents said they executed 23 men from a government paramilitary force in revenge for the killing of their fighters by army forces.

Shaheen was considered one of the proponents of peace talks, according to sources close to the Taliban.

The failure to reach a negotiated settlement has raised the specter of a major military offensive in North Waziristan, a region bordering Afghanistan where Al Qaeda-linked militants are based.

On Sunday, Pakistani fighter jets attacked suspected militant hideouts in tribal areas on the Afghan border. The army said they killed at least 38 insurgents in the third air strike in recent days.

On Saturday, at least nine people were killed in similar strikes in Hangu district. On Feb. 20, 15 suspected militants were killed when army jets bombed the Mir Ali area of North Waziristan.

Bill Beaird wept Friday as he recalled watching live on television as Los Angeles police officers fatally shot his son at the end of a pursuit.

Sometime before the shooting, Beaird said, his son Brian had called to say that police were chasing him. Beaird said he urged his son to pull over. But Brian Beaird kept driving his Corvette at high rates of speed, eventually broadsiding another car Dec. 13 in downtown Los Angeles. The shooting was filmed from TV news helicopters.

The elder Beaird said he watched in shock as his 51-year-old son staggered out of the wrecked Corvette, briefly putting his arms in the air as he walked behind the vehicle to the passenger side, and police opened fire.

Las Vegas Shopper Shot By Thief Attempting To Steal TV

Las Vegas police say a shopper carrying a big-screen TV home from a Target on Thanksgiving was shot by a thief.

Authorities say the incident happened at about 9:45 p.m. Thursday.

Police Lt. David Gordon says the victim was carrying the TV at an apartment complex near the University of Nevada, Las Vegas when someone fired warning shots, prompting him to drop the appliance. Gordon says the robber snatched the TV and took it to a vehicle, and the victim tried to wrestle it back. That’s when the robber fired shots and hit the victim in the leg.

The shopper was taken to Sunrise Hospital with injuries that aren’t considered life-threatening. No arrests have been made. It’s unclear what happened to the TV.

“The gentleman let off about two rounds shooting the guy in his leg and he just hopped in the car and took off and he didn’t even get the TV if you can see it’s still sitting over there on the ground,” witness Samson Barnum told CBS affiliate KLAS.

Meanwhile, police in Utah say at least two people were knocked to the ground by a crowd of Wal-Mart shoppers jockeying for a $ 49 tablet computer. Police say store employees brought out a pallet of items wrapped in cellophane, and about 200 people rushed forward to grab the items as the workers cut the wrapper.

Police say neither person was seriously hurt in the incident Thursday night at a store in Clinton, about 30 miles north of Salt Lake City.

A Florida woman sentenced to 20 years in prison after firing a “warning shot” during an argument with her abusive husband has been released on bond while she awaits retrial under a controversial part of the state’s self-defense law.

The case of Marissa Alexander, who was convicted of aggravated-assault with a deadly weapon, touched off a furor when her supporters compared it to the self-defense case of George Zimmerman, who was acquitted earlier this year of murdering an unarmed black teenager.

Although no one was injured in Alexander’s case, the court gave her a 20-year prison sentence under the state’s mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines because she had fired a gun during the assault.

A state appeals court ruled in September that Alexander, who is black, deserved a new trial because the judge failed to properly instruct the Jacksonville, Florida jury about her self-defense argument. She was convicted in May 2012.

“This news is vindication for Marissa and all the women who have become criminalized for exercising their basic right to defend themselves and their children,” Angie Nixon of Florida New Majority, a social justice organization, said of Alexander’s release.

The case drew criticism from civil rights groups concerned about self-defense laws and mandatory minimum sentencing rules, but it received little attention outside north Florida until the Zimmerman case.

Zimmerman was arrested for killing Trayvon Martin in 2012 and was acquitted of murder and manslaughter in July 2013.

Under the so-called “Stand Your Ground” clause which was added to Florida’s self-defense law in 2005, people who use deadly force to defend themselves from serious injury – rather than retreating to avoid confrontation – can be immune from prosecution.

Zimmerman never sought immunity under “Stand Your Ground,” instead relying on a standard self-defense law.

Alexander’s “Stand Your Ground” claim was rejected because she left the house during the confrontation to retrieve a gun from her car, returning to fire a shot near her husband Rico Gray’s head.

A slightly built woman who stands 5 feet 2 inches (1.57 meter), Alexander said her 245-pound (111 kg) husband was about to attack her when she fired into a kitchen wall during the August 2010 incident. He had previously been convicted of domestic violence for attacking her.

Prosecutors said the shot endangered Gray. At the time, Alexander had an active restraining order against her husband and she carried a concealed weapons permit.

Handcuffed NC teen ends up shot dead in backseat of cop car, police deny involvement

A handcuffed 17-year-old North Carolina boy died of gunshot wounds in a Durham Police Department patrol car Tuesday morning, according to a 911 recording made public Wednesday.

Jesus Huerta was being transported to police headquarters on a trespassing charge by officer Samuel A.M. Duncan when, in the department’s parking lot, Duncan heard the shot from the backseat and jumped out of the car, leaving it to roll into a van with Huerta still inside, Durham police said.   

In the recording of the 911 call, a police officer radioed emergency dispatchers just before 3 am EST Tuesday morning to report “shots fired” in the parking lot of the station. The dispatcher asked the calling officer if he was hurt, according to the recording. “I don’t believe so,” the officer said in response.

The officer is heard asking for medical assistance for a “gunshot wound. Approximately 18-year-old male, not breathing.”

Ahead of the released recording, later on the morning of Huerta’s death, Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez said his department didn’t know how the young man died, but said “based on the preliminary investigation, it does not appear that any Durham police officer fired a weapon during this incident.”

The Durham Police Department would not comment Wednesday on the 911 recording or answer further questions, citing an ongoing investigation.

Huerta’s family was notified of Jesus’ death early Tuesday morning, but they were told they will not yet be able to view his body, taken to the state medical examiner’s office. A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services told WRAL there is no viewing room.

 “(My mother) wants to see my brother, even through a glass window,” said Evelin Huerta, Jesus’ sister.“We don’t have any answers. We want to make sure it’s him because we still have that thought, the possibility that it’s not him, that it was a mistake.”

Huerta’s older siblings, Evelin and Raziel Huerta, said Wednesday Durham police had not directly told the family how Jesus died, though they question any insinuation that he killed himself.

“Wasn’t he handcuffed? Did they search him?” Raziel Huerta said, according to the News & Observer.“He didn’t have a gun. If there was a gun, I don’t know where it came from. Was it on the seat?”

The two older siblings, speaking to reporters in front of their family’s apartment in Durham Wednesday afternoon, said their mother, Sylvia Fernandez, wanted to call the police because Jesus had left against her wishes.

Jesus had been playing video games in the apartment living room before leaving, Raziel said. He then wanted to go out, but his mother said it was too late. The siblings said she was worried for his safety and wanted police to find him. She doesn’t speak English, so she asked Evelin to call the police.

“All of a sudden, he opened the door and left,” Raziel, 27, said. “My mom felt scared and called the police.”

A recording of the 911 call the daughter made for her mother indicates Jesus left the house because his mother had caught him using drugs. The unnamed caller in the recording also said they were worried because Jesus had once “tried to take his life.”

“One time, he wanted to jump from the window” because “he thinks his mother does not love him,” the caller said to the dispatcher. Though the family said Wednesday he had never tried to kill himself, according to WRAL.

Raziel said his brother once tried to jump from a first-story window at their apartment, but because he wanted to get out of the house, not as a suicide attempt.

“He was hanging out, trying to be cool. He had, like, a little swagger,” Raziel Huerta said. “He was not depressed.”

The family told WRAL police appeared at the apartment about ten minutes after the call to police, then another officer radioed saying Jesus was picked up two blocks away from his home. The Huertas said they don’t yet have more information on the trespassing charge Jesus faced.

“Where was he trespassing?” Raziel asked. “He was walking down the street. It’s a free country.”

The siblings said their mother called police to protect Jesus.

“She’s saying next time she is going to doubt picking up the phone and calling a police man,” Evelin Huerta said.

Raziel Huerta said his brother – a student at Riverside High School, where he was known as “Chewy” - was a normal teen who liked video games and expressed desire to be a firefighter or an attorney.

Duncan, who joined the department in 2012, has been placed on administrative leave with pay during the investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation, Lopez said. He said the Durham Police Department’s homicide unit and its professional standards division are also looking into the case.

Who Shot JFK? - Where is the mystery or conspiracy?

Over the last 50 years, people have come up with countless conspiracies about the JFK assassinations.

Some go even so far as to state ridiculous things such as the driver or Jackie shot JFK. One of the most absurd theories I came across yesterday where someone claimed that JFK had a “device” planted into is head which was set-off by Jackie to make it “seem” like an assassination….which, obviously, as is the case for many conspiracy theorists, allegedly was only a “staged event”.

One of the earliest and most often asked “mysteries” is that Oswald allegedly couldn’t have shot JFK, for whatever claimed reasons.

The closer I examine the JFK assassination, the less a mystery it really is. I am afraid to say that really NOTHING about it seems like a mystery or conspiracy to me since the evidence and the events which happened (IN MY OPINION) are pretty consistent.

* Claim that it was impossible that Oswald shot JFK, or claims about the path of the bullet etc…NOTHING mysterious about it:

There is no reason to believe that Oswald was an “impossibly perfect” shot who could not have killed Kennedy

We know that Oswald shot THREE times.

The first bullet entirely missed.

The second bullet hit JFK in the back and exited at the throat, also injured Connally.

The third bullet hit JFK’s head.

The fact that two bullets basically missed already discounts the theory that Oswald was an impossibly good shot and he couldn’t have done it.

The autopsy and all the findings are entirely consistent with that the shooter/Oswald was located in the school book depository. One can trace the path of the bullet(s) back, it’s a straight line from where Oswald was hiding, the back of Kennedy, throat –> governor.

The fatal shot is also consistent with the autopsy and Oswald’s location, with a bullet hitting the back and exiting the president’s head. (Which is *clearly* evidenced in the Zapruder film).

Any conspiracy theory involving Jackie, the driver or whoever would have to take the autopsy into account (which obviously must be faked so as to conform to the “staged event”)…not only would it need to take the autopsy into account, it would ALSO have to take the Zapruder film into account. The film ALSO is consistent with that Oswald was hiding in the book depository and it’s also consistent with the path of the bullet, there is no mystery whatsoever.

Some argue that it was impossible that Oswald fired three shots in the time (4.8s – 5.6s between shots)…which is a ridiculous argument. We KNOW that the first two shots actually missed and only the third one fatally hit.

Oswald had the “perfect” hide-out space with the president’s car below parading very slow, presenting JFK with the back to him as a target with plenty, plenty of time to fire the shots. I am not a weapon experts in the slightest but I can well picture that this would not pose a problem to anyone who is halfway familiar with firearms like he was.

What I am saying…there is a 50 year old “conspiracy” but upon closer examination I don’t see the mystery at all.
