Man to Be Tried for Murder After Victim Dies 13 Years Later

(Newser) – Don Willburn Collins was 13 when he allegedly attacked 8-year-old Robert Middleton in Texas in 1998, dousing him with gasoline and setting him on fire. Middleton, who suffered burns across 99% of his body, went through years of physical therapy and ultimately died in 2011 from skin cancer blamed on the burns—and now Collins will be tried for his murder. Collins was arrested after the crime but released after several months because prosecutors didn’t have enough evidence to pursue the case, the AP reports. But just before his death, Middleton gave a videotaped deposition, accusing Collins for the first time of sexually assaulting him two weeks prior to the attack. That deposition caused the case to be reopened.

Collins, now 28, was charged with murder last year, but in order for the case to proceed to trial, prosecutors needed to transfer it from juvenile to adult court. The judge agreed today to do just that, meaning Collins will be tried as an adult. During a three-day hearing on the matter this week, several witnesses testified that Collins had confessed to attacking Middleton. Another victim also testified against Collins—he was also 8 when Collins sexually assaulted him in 2001, Your Houston News reports. Collins was convicted in that case, and has been behind bars for that offense as well as for failing to register as a sex offender.

Missing patient found dead in hospital stairwell two weeks later

DeliciousPin It

(NaturalNews) By now, the news of that woman found dead in a San Francisco hospital stairwell after being missing for two weeks has had its day and maybe even worn out its news “legs.” But the questions raised have legs of their own.

The questions concerning how it happened open a can of worms regarding hospital care issues that may make you think twice before checking into any hospital.

Just in case you missed it, here’s a summary of that incident. 57-year-old Lynn Spalding, an English woman living in San Francisco, checked into the San Francisco General Hospital late September with what was reported as an infection.

Amazingly, none of the press items online describe the infection, not even if it was external or internal, disease or injury infection. Just that she was being treated for an infection.

Friends who had visited her in the hospital two days prior to her disappearance said she was thin, frail, confused and disoriented, possibly from medications.

Although her room was reportedly checked every 15 minutes, she disappeared with her purse but left her cell phone behind. There’s no statement of when a search was initiated, but friends and neighbors had begun posting missing person signs in the neighborhood.

Two weeks later, a dead body was found in a rarely used stairwell by someone doing a quarterly check of the fire exit door at the bottom of that stairwell. [1]

Though not immediately confirmed, there was enough information to deduce it was Lynn. An interesting side note is that the fire escape door that opened to the hospital grounds is locked from the outside.

Is that so people can come in when there’s a fire? Most fires escape doors can be opened from within and set off alarms when opened.

This apparent lapse of attention and care in a modern medical institution complex is not an isolated case.

In the USA, adverse event reporting is voluntary. It’s not required. So any sense of guilt can be covered by not reporting. Even if a medical professional cares, the paperwork may be too distracting from hectic hospital activities.

This is the way it is with vaccinations, chemotherapy, whatever. If someone dies or gets ill from an allopathic intervention, the disease or some sort of complication is often cited as the cause, not the treatment itself.

One report claims there are just under 100,000 hospital adverse events from preventable errors in America annually. That’s with the current “voluntary” adverse event reporting system. So there are probably many more that aren’t reported at all. [2]

Those statistics are the outcome of a voluntary reporting system reported by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Patient Safety Indicators. A new system, the Global Trigger Tool shows an even worse record.

Global Trigger has determined that up to 90% of adverse events are unreported, and “generally, overall adverse events occur in one out of three hospital admissions.” (Emphasis added) [3]

Let’s face it, when you’re in a hospital, you’re at the mercy of a system that is at least the third highest cause of death in America, behind heart disease and cancer. [4]

And the first and second causes of death are often exacerbated by the third, our forced allopathic health care system.

Include inferior-quality hospital food and being awakened often to check if your liver is managing to hold up with all those toxins forced on you. A lack of good sleep and unhealthy, dead food are not conducive to full recovery, especially when you get those outrageous medical bills.

One Year Later: Camp Bastion Families Still Fighting for Truth

Next week, “never forget” will resound across America as citizens mark a dozen years since the 9/11 terrorist attack and one year since the bloody disaster in Benghazi. But who will remember the American heroes who came under siege at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan on 9/14/12?

Two heroic U.S. Marines — Lt. Col. Christopher Raible and Sgt. Bradley Atwell — perished in the monstrous battle last year, and nearly a dozen others were injured. What happened at Camp Bastion and whether the Obama administration has learned from the deadly incident are timely questions as Washington prepares for war again in a jihadi-infested region.

And as military families know, there is no such thing as “no boots on the ground.”

The families of the fallen at Camp Bastion are still waiting for the results of an official CENTCOM probe into last year’s attack. They hear that members of Congress will get briefed on the investigation before the families themselves get the details about what happened to their loved ones — and who bears responsibility for the security lapses that enabled the attack.

Atwell’s aunt, Deborah Hatheway, told me: “We are hoping for the best, and that _the attack will always be remembered as one of the most horrific attacks by the Taliban, and that they will never be able to do this again.” A Capitol Hill source tells me the report could be ready by the end of the month.

Refresher: Three days after the bloody siege on our consulate in Libya, the Taliban waged an intricately coordinated, brutal attack on Camp Bastion. The base is a British-run NATO compound that adjoins our Marines’ Camp Leatherneck. The meticulously coordinated siege by 15 Taliban infiltrators — dressed in American combat fatigues and armed with assault rifles, rocket-propelled grenades and other weapons — resulted in two deaths and the most devastating loss of U.S. airpower since Vietnam.

Six Harrier jets were destroyed; three refueling stations were wiped out; six hangars were damaged. The Taliban animals released video showing their jihadi training prep. The attack came exactly six months after a failed suicide attack targeting then Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.

As I first reported in June, relatives of the Marines killed in the raid learned on their own that their loved ones were left vulnerable to attack by military leaders who outsourced watchtower security on the base to soldiers from Tonga. The families zeroed in on Maj. Gen. Charles “Mark” Gurganus, who recently returned to the U.S. after commanding coalition forces in Afghanistan, as the man responsible for shortchanging security at Bastion.

Gurganus is the same one who ordered Marines to disarm — immediately after the failed attack on Panetta — because he wanted them “to look just like our (unarmed) Afghan partners.” Neglect of security at Bastion was widely known.

This past weekend, during the Labor Day holiday, military leaders quietly announced that at least four Marines who served with the Harrier squadron that came under fire at Camp Bastion have been awarded the Purple Heart. They are: Maj. Greer Chambless, Lance Cpl. Cole Collums, Sgt. Jonathan Cudo and former Cpl. Matthew Eason. According to the official news release, reported by the Military Times, the Marines were part of the unit that Raible led in a counterattack on the insurgents. Sixteen of the 50 Marines on hand at the time pushed out of the hangar, said Staff Sgt. Jesse Colburn, an ejection seat mechanic who was on the ground during the raid.

Cpl. William Waterstreet reported on the Purple Heart ceremony at the Yuma, Ariz., Marine Corps Air Station: “When the attack began, there were no friendly forces between the Marines of VMA-211 and the insurgents, so it fell to these Marines to act as the first line of defense for Camp Bastion. … Raible called on his Marines to take up arms and fight with limited ammunition, without body armor, automatic weapons, grenades or support against an enemy force of unknown size, strength or location in the dead of night; his Marines volunteered immediately.”

A new article in GQ magazine this month detailed how the courageous “mechanics and pilots turned defenders and riflemen … undoubtedly prevented a greater catastrophe.” Their actions deserve public attention far and wide. And the families deserve accountability. Yet, the Battle Rattle blog of the Military Times website noted something curious: The Marine Corps “did not disclose details about the Aug. 1 Purple Heart ceremony until nearly a month later.” The news was buried on a holiday weekend. President Obama has breathed not a word.

Why?

September 11 was supposed to have taught us to collect the dots and connect the dots, to never underestimate Koran-inspired jihadi warriors, and to never subvert our security to indulge deadly political correctness. From 9/11 to Fort Hood to Benghazi to Bastion, it’s not whether we’ve forgotten that matters most. It’s whether we have learned.

Fire"s Threat To Bay Area"s Water Supply May Come Later

A charred caution sign just outside of California’s Yosemite National Park.

David McNew /Reuters/Landov

The huge “Rim Fire” in and around California’s Yosemite National Park hasn’t yet caused problems at the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir that provides water to 2.6 million people in the Bay Area. There have been fears that falling ash will pollute the water there.

But now, the San Francisco Chronicle reports, “wildfire experts say problems for San Francisco’s water agency may come later. Hetch Hetchy’s pristine waters will be vulnerable to eroding hillsides as the fire leaves behind torched soil that can’t absorb autumn rains and leveled forests that no longer anchor steep mountain slopes.”

There’s also word from KQED Wednesday morning that the flames are “perilously close to a longstanding experimental forest near Sonora. Losing it would be a setback for forestry and as fate would have it, fire management. For 80 years, the Stanislaus-Tuolumne Experimental Forest has been a trove of data for foresters.”

Southern California Public Radio, which has been updating an online “Fire Tracker” with data about blazes in the state, continues to add information about the Rim Fire here. As of 7:45 a.m. ET Wednesday, it was reporting that the fire was 20 percent contained and had burned 184,481 acres.

KQED, meanwhile, has posted a graphic produced by the federal government’s InciWeb that offers a colorful look at the Rim Fire’s growth since the blaze broke out on Aug. 17.

In case you missed it, this post we published on Tuesday is still worth checking out: “STUNNING VIDEO: Pilots’ View Of California’s Rim Fire.”

Pelosi On Immigration Reform: We"ll Save Hardball For Later

Whether there’s an immigration reform bill or not depends to a large degree on how House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) chooses to run the House. But if there is going to be an immigration reform bill, it won’t be Boehner’s show alone.

As Boehner effectively acknowledged Thursday, passing legislation that could conceivably become consensus comprehensive immigration reform will require both Democratic and Republican votes. And that means Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) will have tremendous sway over what the House produces.

But for now Pelosi’s being cautious with that power. Though she’s urged Republicans to pass a single, bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform bill, and to move with deliberate haste, she’s stopped short of nixing the process the GOP has chosen to move immigration legislation and is even tolerant of the rhetorical games Republicans are playing as they try to cobble together a majority for provisions dealing with the 11 million immigrants currently in the country illegally.

And she won’t go anywhere close — yet — to introducing what’s known as a “discharge petition” — which, with 218 signatures, would force a House vote on the Senate’s comprehensive bill.

“I fully subscribe to the idea that we should have a House bill … we shouldn’t have to just accept the Senate bill,” Pelosi told TPM in a wide-ranging interview Wednesday. “However, there is a Senate bill. And that gives leverage to those who say ‘now pass something in the House. Pass something and go to conference.’ If you don’t, there will be strong public sentiment, to take up, give us a vote, on the Senate bill.”

If we reach that point in the weeks and months ahead, Pelosi will probably step up the pressure and take procedural steps to secure — or attempt to secure — a vote on the Senate bill. But we’re not there yet. There’s political value in allowing the GOP to try to sort this out among themselves. Furthermore, skipping steps and going straight to hardball probably diminishes the chances her actions would be successful. And so Pelosi won’t even entertain hypothetical scenarios about the consequences if the House GOP can’t ultimately pass anything.

“I’m more optimistic than you are about this,” she added. “I really do believe that we shouldn’t be saying if you don’t do this we’re going to be doing that.”

But she does acknowledge that Boehner will run into problems moving piecemeal immigration bills if he adheres to the criterion that immigration reform legislation must have the support of more than half of his conference.

“I don’t even know if they can pass those on the floor though,” Pelosi added. “I don’t even know if they can pass those bills though. So at some point they’re going to have to have a bipartisan vote on whatever they send forward.”

Pelosi is similarly sanguine about a different congressional imperative — replacing Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act, which the Supreme Court struck down last month.

“We had meetings immediately after the Supreme Court decision,” she said. “People have been tasked to do different things in a bipartisan way. The Judiciary Committee will have a hearing next week. … It’s about timing. We really have to do it this year. We can have hearings. We can do this, we can do that. But it should be done in a way that accomplishes all of it this year, because you see states are already using this interim period to make mischief.”

You’d think that urgency might prompt her to tout the procedural and messaging power of a discharge petition. But as with immigration reform, there are political reasons to let the GOP try to get its act together on its own first.

“[Voting Rights Act reauthorization] was very strongly bipartisan,” Pelosi said. “So it wasn’t as if it eked its way through and now they’re going to get even. It was very bipartisan. We believe it will continue to be.”

Medgar Evers" Murder, 50 Years Later: Widow Myrlie Evers-Williams Remembers "A Man for All Time"

Fifty years ago today — June 12th, 1963 — 37-year-old civil rights organizer Medgar Evers was assassinated in the driveway outside his home in Jackson, Mississippi. In the early 1960s Evers served as the first NAACP Field Secretary for Mississippi, where he worked to end segregation, fought for voter rights, struggled to increase black voter registration, led business boycotts, and brought attention to murders and lynchings. We hear from Edgers’ widow, Myrlie Evers-Williams, on how she wants her husband to be remembered “a man for all time, one who was totally dedicated to freedom for everyone — and was willing to pay a price.”
