(Digital Journal) If Apple devices are tallied together — Macs, iPads, iPhones and so on — the combined sales surpass those of Windows PCs for the first time.

Total unit sales of Apple products have surpassed unit sales of computers running Windows, according to Geek Wire. Using numbers from Apple, Gartner and Andreesen Horowitz, analysts have shown that the two companies were close to parity on device sales when counting Windows Phone units, though Apple has surpassed devices that run traditional Windows.

JGB largely steady, govt sells inflation-link bonds

JGB largely steady, govt sells inflation-link bonds

TOKYO Wed Jan 8, 2014 9:58pm EST

TOKYO Jan 9 (Reuters) – Japanese government bond prices were largely steady on Thursday, even though Tokyo’s stocks came under pressure, while the country was to sell its second inflation-linked bonds since 2008.

The 10-year yield edged up 0.5 basis point to 0.705 percent, while the 10-year JGB futures were largely unchanged at 143.72.

Tokyo’s Nikkei stock average dropped 1.3 percent in relatively active trade on Thursday morning after rising sharply on the previous day, as investors stayed risk averse before the release of U.S. nonfarm payroll data on Friday.

The finance ministry was to sell 300 billion yen of inflation-linked 10-year JGBs with a 0.1 percent coupon later in the day.

This marked the second such issue since 2008. In October, the government sold 300 billion yen of 10-year inflation-linked JGBs with strong demand.

Japan suspended issue of inflation-linked bonds in 2008, when the global financial crisis threw the country back into deflation and caused massive losses on inflation-linked JGBs.

“Valuations do not look particularly cheap and seasonality will work against the issue, but auction results should be solid given the external environment – yen depreciation and stronger-than-expected CPI inflation,” Barclays wrote in a note, referring to the latest offer.

The Bank of Japan aims to achieve a 2 percent inflation in two years, when it stunned the financial markets in April by promising to inject $ 1.4 trillion into the economy to spur growth.

BOJ board member Sayuri Shirai said it may be desirable to take more than two year to achieve the central bank’s inflation target if the burden on households and the corporate sector proves to be excessive, according to a speech released on Thursday.

The 30-year yield was down 0.5 basis point at 1.695 percent, while the 20-year yield was unchanged at 1.535 percent.

The short-dated five-year yield inched up 0.5 basis point to 0.220 percent.

Walmart Sells Out of "Duck Dynasty" Merch in Show of Support

‘Duck Dynasty’ merchandise is flying off Walmart’s digital shelves, with a variety of goods related to the popular A&E reality show out of stock as a furor rages over patriarch Phil Robertson’s anti-gay comments and his TV future.

The Robertson family has a merchandise empire worth $ 400 million, according to Forbes, with sales in Walmart acounting for about half of that amount.

And fans, despite the controversy, aren’t shying away from the Duck paraphernalia, The Daily Mail reported Friday. The array ranges from T-shirts to bedding, posters, watches and toys, but by Friday night, many of the items were listed as “out of stock online.”

Word of the shopping stampede was burning up social media as well, with fans spreading the word via Twitter.

“Duck Dynasty’s multi-million payday: WalMart sold out
A&E fired Phil, but he is LAUGHING ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK,” one tweeter observes, while another urges: “Wal-Mart has sold out of all #DuckDynasty items. Show your support for the Robertson family by purchasing here,” providing a link for the purchase.

The Dailly Mail quoted another tweet: ‘Your stores may look quite vacant when you pull down the Duck Dynasty merch. May want to double down on the Honey Boo Boo.”

A Walmart spokeswoman declined to comment to the newspaper.

According to Forbes, Walmart announced its best-selling item of apparel for both men and women this year was the show’s T-shirt.

“Walmart publicly dumped Paula Deen after the Southern chef’s headline-grabbing allegations of racism this past summer, although you can still find her cookware on Walmart.com,” wrote Forbes scribe Clare O’Connor.

“The question is whether the powers that be in Bentonville, Ark. believe Robertson’s vile homophobia will anger their shoppers the same way they clearly imagined Deen’s apparent racism would.”

The Robertson clan warned that they “cannot imagine” doing the A&E series without patriarch Phil Robertson who has been suspended indefinitely after he told GQ magazine that homosexuality was a sin and compared it to bestiality, among other things.

A&E has yet to publicly clarify what the future of the show might be, what they’ll do with their block of reruns, or what the suspension means, CNN reported Friday night.

(Newser) – Banksy yesterday sold some of his works at a Central Park stand—pieces worth about $ 32,000 each. The secretive street artist’s selling price, however, was decidedly lower: $ 60 per work. The collection, which was being sold by an elderly man, looked like it was full of fakes, the BBC notes; in fact, the works were signed by the artist, who posted about it on his website today. “Yesterday I set up a stall in the park selling 100% authentic original signed Banksy canvases. For $ 60 each,” the artist noted on the site for his New York residency, called Better Out Than In.

The stall took in just $ 420 all day, and some customers paid even less than $ 60; in a video, the BBC notes, one negotiates to get 50% off. But don’t rush over for a deal: “The stall will not be there again today,” the artist posted, adding, “I know street art can feel increasingly like the marketing wing of an art career, so I wanted to make some art without the price tag attached. There is no gallery show or book or film. It’s pointless. Which hopefully means something.” Each day this month, Banksy plans to create a piece of “elaborate graffiti, large scale street sculpture, video installation, or substandard performance art.”

The Breitling Top Time, worn by actor Sean Connery during 007′s mission to find stolen atomic bombs the 1965 movie “Thunderball”, was estimated to sell for between 40,000 and 60,000 pounds.

Auction house Christie’s said this was the first watch to be modified by the Q branch in the Bond movies and was equipped with a “Geiger counter” to help the suave secret agent detect the emission of nuclear radiation in the film.

She was unable to give details on the vendor or purchaser of the watch that was one of 252 lots at the auction house’s pop culture sale.

Among the many other items sold were Bob Dylan lyrics for an unreleased song and actress Elizabeth Taylor’s first wedding dress, which she wore as an 18-year-old when she married Conrad Hilton Junior in 1950 in one of the social events of that year attended by over 700 guests.

“The dress symbolizes one of the most iconic off-screen moments of ‘Golden Age Hollywood’,” Christie’s said in a statement.

The dress sold for nearly 122,000 pounds after an estimated sale price of 30,000 to 50,000 pounds.
