FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) — Bradley Manning, the Army private arrested in the biggest leak of classified material in U.S. history, pleaded guilty Thursday to 10 charges that could send him to prison for 20 years, saying he was trying to expose the American military’s “bloodlust” and disregard for human life in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Military prosecutors said they plan to move forward with a court-martial on the 12 remaining charges against him, including aiding the enemy, which carries a potential life sentence.

“I began to become depressed at the situation we found ourselves mired in year after year. In attempting counterinsurgency operations, we became obsessed with capturing and killing human targets on lists,” the 25-year-old former intelligence analyst in Baghdad told a military judge.

He added: “I wanted the public to know that not everyone living in Iraq were targets to be neutralized.”

It was the first time Manning directly admitted leaking the material to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks and detailed the frustrations that led him to do it.

The slightly built soldier from Oklahoma read from a 35-page statement through his wire-rimmed glasses for more than an hour. He spoke quickly and evenly, showing little emotion even when he described how troubled he was by what he had seen.

The judge, Col. Denise Lind, accepted his plea to violating military regulations.

Manning admitted sending hundreds of thousands of Iraq and Afghanistan battlefield reports, State Department diplomatic cables, other classified records and two battlefield video clips to WikiLeaks in 2009 and 2010.

He said he was disturbed by the conduct of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the way American troops treated the populace. He said he did not believe the release of the information would harm the U.S.

“I believed that if the general public, especially the American public, had access to the information … this could spark a domestic debate on the role of the military and our foreign policy in general,” Manning said.

Manning said he was appalled by 2007 combat video of an assault by a U.S. helicopter that killed 11 men, including a Reuters news photographer. The Pentagon concluded the troops mistook the camera equipment for weapons.

“The most alarming aspect of the video to me was the seemingly delightful bloodlust the aerial weapons team happened to have,” Manning said, adding that the soldiers’ actions “seemed similar to a child torturing ants with a magnifying glass.”

As for the sensitive State Department cables, he said they “documented backdoor deals and criminality that didn’t reflect the so-called leader of the free world.”

“I thought these cables were a prime example of the need for a more open diplomacy,” Manning said. “I believed that these cables would not damage the United States. However, I believed these cables would be embarrassing.”

The battlefield reports were the first documents Manning decided to leak. He said he sent them to WikiLeaks after contacting The Washington Post and The New York Times. He said he felt a reporter at the Post didn’t take him seriously, and a message he left for news tips at the Times was not returned.

Times spokeswoman Eileen Murphy said Thursday of the purported phone call: “This is news to us.”

The Obama administration has said the release of the documents threatened valuable military and diplomatic sources and strained America’s relations with other governments. The administration has aggressively pursued individuals accused of leaking classified material, and Manning’s is the highest-profile case.

Manning has been embraced by some left-leaning activists as a whistle-blowing hero whose actions exposed war crimes and helped trigger the Middle Eastern pro-democracy uprisings known as the Arab Spring in 2010.

The soldier said he corresponded online with someone he believed to be WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange but never confirmed the person’s identity.

WikiLeaks has been careful never to confirm or deny whether Manning was the source of the documents it has posted on the Web.

On Thursday, Assange told British television that Manning is “America’s foremost political prisoner,” and “all those involved in the persecution of Bradley Manning will find cause to reflect on their actions.”

Assange himself remains under investigation by the U.S. and has been holed up in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London for the better part of a year to avoid extradition to Sweden on sex-crimes allegations.

LONDON (Reuters) – U.S. singer Anastacia has been diagnosed with breast cancer having successfully battled the disease in 2003, she said in a statement posted on her Facebook page.

The 44-year-old, who had major success outside the United States with hits like the 2000 dance favorite “I’m Outta Love”, has been forced to cancel plans to tour Europe starting in London on April 6.

“I feel so awful to be letting down all my amazing fans who were looking forward to ‘It’s A Man’s World Tour’,” she said in a statement. “It just breaks my heart to disappoint them,” she said.

She added that she will continue writing and recording her new album and hopes to schedule a new tour as soon as possible.

CHICAGO (Reuters) – First lady Michelle Obama knows she has star power, and she has used it for four years to champion her causes of fighting childhood obesity and helping military families.

But now that she has successfully made it through the last political campaign for her husband, President Barack Obama, the first lady is also having fun with her popularity – raising questions over whether she has gone too far in becoming a pop culture icon.

Her surprise appearance at the Academy Awards – where she was beamed in from the White House dressed in a sparkling evening gown to announce the Best Picture award – provided ammunition for her critics.

The first lady has enjoyed a steady positive approval rating over the past four years, even at times when her husband sank in the polls.

But the Oscar appearance – coming on the heels of the “mom dance” that she did with late night comedian Jimmy Fallon, which quickly went viral on the Internet – sparked a debate on the proper role of a first lady.

Washington Post columnist Courtland Milloy, who often writes about minority issues, described Obama’s Oscar appearance as “unbecoming frivolity” and urged the first lady to “raise her game” and take up a more expanded role in the second term championing more serious causes.

“Enough with the broccoli and Brussels sprouts,” Milloy wrote this week in the Washington Post. “Where is that intellectually gifted Princeton graduate, the Harvard-educated lawyer and mentor to the man who would become the first African American president of the United States?”

His column sparked hundreds of comments, ranging from people who thought Obama was doing a great job raising awareness about the childhood obesity problem to others who thought she was trying too hard to be like a Hollywood star.

The first lady said she was not surprised by the controversy over her Oscars appearance, but said she would use all forms of media to get out her message and would reach out to all demographics – including filmmakers who could help with her efforts to introduce children to arts and culture.

“Anyone in this position has a huge spotlight,” Obama told a small group of reporters traveling with her on a three-city tour to promote her Let’s Move program to fight childhood obesity.

“We’ve always thought about that spotlight. And taking it, while it’s looking at you, to stand in front of something good so it shines on that too,” Obama said, before jumping and dancing with more than 6,500 kids gathered in Chicago to highlight the importance of daily exercise.

Obama gained much of her popularity because Americans could relate to her, whether she was recounting stories of struggling to pay student loans early in her marriage with President Obama or talking about the difficulties of raising daughters Sasha and Malia on her own in Chicago while her husband worked as a U.S. senator in Washington.

As she travels about the country championing the Let’s Move program, she talks of how she was forced into rethinking her daughters’ eating habits several years ago after their pediatrician warned that they could be on the road to becoming overweight.

She said the Obama administration was the first to face such intense media scrutiny – from 24-hour news cycles to Twitter to innumerable blogs – so it was just inevitable that there was more of a focus on everything she does.

Her programs have shown some progress, with healthier school lunches now being served across the country and childhood obesity rates dropping in some states like Mississippi.

But should Obama be dancing on TV with a comedian dressed in drag or stunning 40 million viewers and the actors attending the Academy Awards?

“You don’t really have a job description as first lady. And you’re held up to this standard where it’s impossible to please everyone all the time,” said Anita McBride, former chief of staff to Laura Bush when she was first lady.

“I wouldn’t say this has crossed the line. But coming on the heels of the very popular ‘Mom Dance’ … It’s saturating. You have to say – how much is too much?,” said McBride.

SECOND TERM

Although the second Obama administration has only just begun, the first lady said she was aware that time was short for her to have an impact.

She said she planned to keep working on her two main projects – Let’s Move and the Joining Forces military families program – but was also trying to decide what other causes she might champion in the next four years.

She said in the coming weeks she would decide what to pursue, but it would certainly focus on kids. Obama said she might begin to get more involved in the international arena but it would have to dovetail with her domestic projects.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan, in Chicago with Obama to announce a new public-private partnership to help kids get 60 minutes of exercise a day, said when the first lady was involved in a cause it added weight to the program.

“I think having the first lady leading that effort – as the mom-in-chief, as she’s called – I think that can be really, really powerful,” he said. “She is beloved, she is respected and I think people will pay attention.”

A 2007 study said only 4 percent of elementary schools and 8 percent of middle schools provide daily physical education courses for the entire school year.

Wendy\’s, Applebee\’s, and Outback Steakhouse were no problem to find, same with high quality but non-Puerto Rican restaurants you can get back home(i.e. \”should we get Mexican tonight, or Italian? Ooh, maybe sushi??\”) but local food places were nowhere to be found.

Even the coffee – something every guide book told us was a matter of national pride – was of an unknown provenance. If you ask someone in San Juan if the breakfast place down the street serves Puerto Rican coffee, the answer you\’ll get is most likely along the lines of \”well you\’re in Puerto Rico, and it\’s coffee, soooo…..\”

Once you head inland though, the landscape becomes more mountainous and claustrophobic, but the local food choices become MUCH more expansive. We hopped in our trusty rental car and made our way to foodie heaven – the pork highway.

To be frank, if you want to get authentic food, you\’re going to have to get where the locals are. Don\’t just cruise over them on the main highway – get off the main roads and onto the little country byways. Happily, la ruta de lechon is easier to get to than most authentic food.

Head towards the town of Guavate. This is the town that highway 184 leads to, but it isn\’t your destination – you\’re just going towards it. No, the town isn\’t your destination – Highway 184 is.

Just take highway 52 to 184 and immediately after exiting 52 you\’ll be drenched in the smell of roasting pig. Just pull over at any building with a pig on a metal spit and you\’ve found your place to have lunch.

You order your pork by the pound at these sorts of places. Just tell them how many pounds you\’d like, and they\’ll take care of it for you. A healthy assortment of different parts of the pig will be hacked off for you, and all you\’ll need to do is crack open a beer and drink it all in.
