UK police in court on anti-Muslim bias

Britain’s Metropolitan police face court over anti-Muslim bias.

Britain’s Metropolitan (Met) police are facing legal challenge over refusal to reveal the results of an investigation into whether they have an anti-Muslim bias.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), the police watchdog, is seeking a high court order against the force’s refusal to hand over results of a probe into alleged misuse of counter-terrorism powers to discriminate against innocent Muslims, The Guardian reported.

“If the police have nothing to hide then they should come forward with their evidence to the IPCC. There appears to be an arrogance and high-handedness here. This attitude probably stems from the far-reaching powers given to the police under schedule 7 itself,” said Asif Bhayat from CagePrisoners campaign group.

Under schedule 7 of Britain’s Terrorism Act, police officers can stop people at ports and airports for up to nine hours without reasonable suspicion of their involvement in any crime.

Earlier this week, official figures also showed that the number of people arrested in Britain for terrorism and charged with a criminal offence has hit its highest level in 2012-13.
