Jordan Prepares For Syrian Fallout; Places Air Force On High Alert
Zero Hedge
September 4, 2013
Following last week’s refusal to allow the US to use the nation as a launchpad for Syria strikes, Jordan has placed its air-force, one of the Arab world’s strongest, on high alert in anticipation of “various possibilities.” The show of strength captured in Al-Arabiya’s special access to the Jordanian air-base shows F-16s and multiple Himars truck-mounted rocket-launchers. While Jordan, like so many nations, would prefer the political solution, it is prepared for any emergency.
Jordan has put its forces on high alert ahead of anticipated Western airstrikes against the Syrian regime.
…
Jordan has said it will not be a launchpad for any foreign military intervention in Syria.
But as the West threatens to strike the regime in Syria in response to the use of chemical weapons, it seems that Jordan’s army is ready for various possibilities.
…
The Jordanian Air force is one of the strongest in the Arab world, possessing many of the most advanced fighter-jets in the world today.
Jordan is also one of few countries that possess the multiple Himars truck -mounted rocket launchers that exceed 70 kilometers in range and can identify a target within seconds.
A political solution in Syria remains the favorable option for Jordan, but the army says it is prepared to defend the country and its people at any time.

Marine Corps Page Hacked by Syrian Activists- Displayed Anti-War Message
By Cassius Methyl

September 1, 2013
Today, the US marine corps recruiting page was hacked by Syrian hackers, with a message warning US soldiers against joining ‘Al Qaeda’ in fighting in the Syrian civil war. It contained images of US soldiers holding pieces of paper, declaring that they will not fight in Syria, images that have been circulating around the internet rapidly in recent days, and the following message-
“This is a message written by your brothers in the Syrian Army, who have been fighting al-Qaida for the last 3 years. We understand your patriotism and love for your country so please understand our love for ours. Obama is a traitor who wants to put your lives in danger to rescue al- Qaida insurgents.”
“Marines, please take a look at what your comrades think about Obama’s alliance with al-Qaida against Syria. Your officer in charge probably has no qualms about sending you to die against soldiers just like you, fighting a vile common enemy. The Syrian army should be your ally not your enemy.”
“Refuse your orders and concentrate on the real reason every soldier joins their military, to defend their homeland. You’re more than welcome to fight alongside our army rather than against it.”
Your brothers, the Syrian army soldiers. A message delivered by the SEA”
In these recent days, protests unprecedented in history have been held and planned, some considered ‘emergency protests’, a concept that seems to just have been created. This is an excellent sign that activists, truth speakers, and the opposition to war are finally being heard. People continue to wake up faster than ever before, and consequently, the people in power who want this war are trying to advance their agenda rapidly. Please share this with as many people as possible, as a method of raising morale and confidence for the opposition to this senseless war. Yet this raising confidence is not hollow, this isn’t building support for a resistance that is likely to fail- this is very powerful, very real opposition by spreading of information, and it is having a dramatic effect on the consciousness of people everywhere.

(Al-Qaeda Led) Syrian rebels plan raids to exploit Western strikes
Erika Solomon
Reuters
August 31, 2013
(Reuters) – Opposition fighters across Syria are preparing to launch attacks that exploit anticipated U.S.-led military strikes, but there are no plans to coordinate with Western forces, a Syrian rebel commander said on Saturday.
Qassim Saadeddine, a former Syrian army colonel and spokesman for the rebels’ Supreme Military Council, said the council had sent a selection of rebel groups a military plan of action to use if strikes took place.
“The hope is to take advantage when some areas are weakened by any strikes. We ordered some groups to prepare in each province, to ready their fighters for when the strike happens,” he told Reuters, speaking by Skype.
“They were sent a military plan that includes preparations to attack some of the targets we expect to be hit in foreign strikes, and some others that we hope to attack at the same time.”

UK Votes Against Syrian Strike While Obama Presses on Adding Fifth Destroyer to Region
Barack Obama‘s plans for air strikes against Syria were thrown into disarray on Thursday night after the British parliament unexpectedly rejected a motion designed to pave the way to authorizing the UK’s participation in military action.
The White House was forced to consider the unpalatable option of taking unilateral action against the regime of Bashar al-Assad after the British prime minister, David Cameron, said UK would not now take part in any military action in response to a chemical attack in the suburbs of Damascus last week.
Although Britain’s support was not a prerequisite for US action, the Obama administration was left exposed without the backing of its most loyal ally, which has taken part in every major US military offensive in recent years.
Caitlin Hayden, a spokeswoman for Obama’s national security council, indicated the administration would consider acting unliaterally. “The US will continue to consult with the UK government – one of our closest allies and friends. As we’ve said, President Obama’s decision-making will be guided by what is in the best interests of the United States.
“He believes that there are core interests at stake for the United States and that countries who violate international norms regarding chemical weapons need to be held accountable.”
There is not a single shred of evidence that indicates Assad’s Syria used chemical weapons. Now the war mongering nations of the world are backing down, however, war is still imminent. The United Nations investigation team is expected to leave Syria on Friday or Saturday. In the meantime the man in the White House has order yet another destroyer to the Mediterranean.
The Pentagon is moving a fifth warship armed with cruise missiles to the eastern Mediterranean Sea, giving the U.S. more firepower for a possible attack on Syria in response to alleged use of chemical weapons, a defense official said.
The guided-missile destroyer Stout is expected to arrive in the area Thursday, joining four other missile-carrying U.S. destroyers within range of Syria.
Each can carry up to 90 cruise missiles, though experts say they are likely carrying about half that number. Cruise missiles have a range of nearly 1,000 miles, allowing the vessels carrying them to stay well out of range of Syria’s anti-ship missiles, even when they launch the missiles.
Last week, reports indicated a U.S. led strike on Syria would begin this week. Then the stalling started. First it was Wednesday, then Thursday, Friday and now the latest has it as Saturday. We must watch and wait, please say a pray for the safety of our Christian brothers and sisters.

Study uses "martyr" posts to break down "foreign fighters" aiding Syrian rebels

Flashpoint Global Partners
Muhammad Yassin Jarrad, who was killed on Jan. 16 near Al-Suwayda, Syria, was the brother-in-law of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the late leader of al Qaeda in Iraq. His father, Yassin, also was a 2003 attack that killed Muhammad Bakr al-Hakim, one of
Iraq’s most prominent Shia Muslim leaders.

Foreign fighters who have flocked to Syria to join the fight to topple the regime of Bashar al-Assad are a “motley crew” whose motivations range from “pro-democratic revolutionary fervor to the most extreme sectarian and hardline Islamist viewpoints imaginable,” according to a report released Monday.
The first-of-its-kind analysis, by the security firm Flashpoint Partners and the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, broke down 280 “martyr” postings on jihadist websites, Facebook and Twittter marking the deaths of the foreign recruits.
The report notes that social media have “provided a critical online bedrock for foreign fighters in Syria. … Each day on Facebook, new names of deceased foreign fighters are posted by rebel supporters who hope that their willingness to sacrifice will inspire others to follow in their footsteps.”
While Western governments have expressed concern that the foreign fighters are Sunni militants and terrorists bent on toppling Assad’s regime, controlled by members of his Shiite Alawite faction, the report paints a more nuanced picture of the foreign contingent, which it estimates likely make up 10 percent of less of the rebel military force.
“The dominant nationalities among the Sunni fighters in our data sample are Libyans, Saudis, and Tunisians,” said Evan Kohlmann, a senior Flashpoint partner and NBC News terrorism consultant, who co-wrote the report. “While Libyans and Saudis played an outsized role in Iraq as well, the newfound flood of Tunisians to Syria may be an unintended negative consequence of the Arab Spring.”

Aaron Y. Zelin / Flashpoint Global Partners
Chart shows countries of origins for the 280 foreign fighters whose deaths were marked by online ‘martyr’ posts.
The numbers from the admittedly small sample of foreign fighters show that even within the radical elements, there is a broad range of participants.
“A wide variety of international terrorist organizations have become deeply involved in Syria,” Kohlmann said. “In fact, based on our data, Sunni foreign fighters in Syria include former Hamas militants from Gaza, relatives of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi (the late leader of al Qaeda in Iraq) and leaders of Fatah al-Islam (a Lebanon-based radical Sunni group).
“What should be particularly worrying for Western governments is the fact that at least a third of the fighters in our sample were affiliated with the most extreme rebel faction, al Qaeda’s Jabhat al-Nusra — and that at least seven of the 280 dead fighters we analyzed were from Western countries, including France, Denmark, Australia, the U.K., and the United States.”
Just last week, a Michigan woman was reported killed while fighting with the rebels. The report also cites the case of Eric Harroun, a former U.S. soldier indicted in the U.S. in March after allegedly fighting in Syria with the al-Nusrah Front, an alias of al Qaeda in Iraq.
But the report, titled “Convoy of Martyrs in the Levant,” — a geographical term referring to the area bounded by the Mediterranean Sea and the Arabian Peninsula, encompassing Cyprus, the Palestinian territories, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon and Syria – also found more moderate Muslim groups and pro-democracy factions in the rag-tag rebel army.
“Some of the foreign fighters have … been attached to different Free Syrian Army units or more mainstream Islamist factions like Liwa’ al-Ummah,” it said. “There has been a long list of cases of individuals who were involved in pro-democracy uprisings in Tunisia or Egypt, who then went to Libya to help in the fight against the Gadhhafi regime, and finally headed to Syria to finish off the Assad regime.”
The report, co-written by Aaron Zelin of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and Laith al-Khouri of Flashpoint Partners, also noted that the Assad regime has relied on foreign fighters in the escalating conflict, “including fighters from recognized terrorist groups like Hezbollah and the PFLP (the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine).”
“It is perhaps even arguable that, at present, there are actually more foreign nationals fighting on the side of the Assad regime than with the rebels,” it said.
The U.N. estimates that at least 70,000 people have been killed since the conflict broke out in April 2011.
