Son of a Bush sets 2016 timeline

I don’t know who’s more excited by the prospect of a presidential campaign by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Democrats who would love to see the Bush name at the top of the GOP ticket, or moronic fat cat Republicans who just a few months ago were trying to convince Mitt Romney to run again. Whatever the case may be, Bush now says he’ll decide by the end of 2014 whether he’s going to throw his hat into the ring:

Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush said he would decide whether to run for the U.S. presidency in 2016 by the end of this year.

If he does run, he clearly doesn’t want anyone to think he was eager to do it, however:

“I go about my business each day trying to avoid having to think about it,” Bush said yesterday at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station, Texas. “I have a lot of work to do, and I have a fulfilled life.”

Yeah, I’m not buying that for a second. For this former two-term governor AND son AND brother of a president, the question isn’t whether he wants to run, it’s whether he thinks he can win. The bad news—if, like me, you’re rooting for him to run—is that last month The Washington Post conducted a national survey featuring 11 potential GOP nominees and found that Bush would be the worst candidate Republicans could nominate. The good news is that Republicans will probably convince themselves that findings like that are all just a plot by the lame-stream media to keep them from nominating their last, best hope for the White House. Whatever the case, my fingers are crossed.

Retiring House Intelligence Chair Won"t Rule Out 2016 Run


Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, announced on Friday that he won’t seek re-election in 2014, but on Sunday he left the door open for a 2016 White House bid.


Rogers elaborated on the radio show he plans to host for Detroit station WJR on “Fox News Sunday.”




“So when someone walked in and said, ‘Hey, we’re going to give you the opportunity to have a discussion in people’s cars, living rooms and kitchen, every single day, from California to Iowa to New Hampshire to South Carolina. We think that you can change the needle on this debate,’ and I thought long and hard about it and thought, ‘You know, I think they’re right,’” Rogers said.


Host George Wallace pointed out that the congressman mentioned key GOP primary states, and asked about a potential presidential run.


“You know, Ronald Reagan back in 1980 — I don’t have to tell you — used his platform as a radio commentator to run for president. So is that a consideration for you? Are you prepared at this point to rule out any interest in 2016?” Wallace asked.


“Oh, Ronald Reagan used his platform on radio to run for president of the United States? I had no idea, Chris,” Rogers responded, smiling.


When Wallace pressed him further, Rogers didn’t reveal any concrete plans, but didn’t deny an interest in running.


“Listen, I’m going to take it where it goes,” he told Wallace. “This is a very unique opportunity that I will be able to talk about issues in ways you don’t hear on a national radio platform today, about the importance of national security, foreign policy and all of the issues facing America.”

Romney: In Hillary 2016, Bill Is "Not Relevant"


(Newser) – If Hillary Clinton is the Democrats’ nominee in 2016, Bill hasn’t got anything to do with it, says Mitt Romney. “I don’t think Bill Clinton is as relevant as Hillary Clinton,” he says, as per Politico. “Hillary Clinton will have plenty to discuss about her own record, and I don’t imagine that Bill Clinton is going to be a big part of it. She has her own record and her own vision.” As for Romney 2016, he jokingly declined, saying, “I’m not Ronald Reagan; I think that ‘s been pointed out to me before.” Romney also addressed gay marriage (“I think the ideal setting for raising a child is in a setting where there’s a father and mother,” adding, “people have the right to live their life as they want to.”) and the Sochi Olympics (“There’s no such thing as a 100% guarantee, but I think at this stage people feel pretty comfortable that the games will be safe.”) Elsewhere on your Sunday dial:

PA House Race Previews 2016 for Dems


Sometimes the smallest races tell the biggest stories.


Take Pennsylvania Democrats’ primary race to replace Allyson Schwartz in suburban Philadelphia’s 13th Congressional District. (Schwartz is campaigning for the Democrats’ nomination to challenge Gov. Tom Corbett in November.)


Unless the bad election year projected for Democrats has been vastly underestimated, this House seat was designed to be held comfortably by a Democrat — which means the battle for it essentially occurs in the party’s primary.


Those vying for the seat include political newcomer Dr. Val Arkoosh, state lawmakers Daylin Leach and Brandon Boyle, and Marjorie Margolies, who held the seat from 1993 to 1995. She is considered the frontrunner because of her name recognition and her unique connection to the Clinton family. (She is Chelsea’s mother-in-law.)



At its core, this race is for the soul of the party in a post-Obama political landscape. In a year in which Democrats have had a hard time attracting quality candidates for House races — a common occurrence for both parties when they know their chances are slim to win a majority — this race has attracted four qualified candidates.


All of them have a legitimate political argument and a path to victory.


All of them are very different types of Democrats, too.


Boyle is a young state representative, popular with big labor and very much the old-fashioned Catholic Democrat; he comes from a hardworking neighborhood and is proud of his working-class roots. In fact, he’s the only candidate who isn’t a millionaire or married to one.


Leach is the classic Netroots fighting progressive. If he can make this race about ideology, he can win.


Arkoosh is a doctor, the classic outsider, running as a mainstream liberal; she has some implicit support from the incumbent, although it is doubtful that Schwartz will outwardly support her in the primary. She also has raised a lot of money.


Then there’s Margolies, an establishment Democrat. She has a perceived edge, not because of previously holding the seat — retreading alone wouldn’t put her in that position — but because the Clintons’ influence in Pennsylvania Democrat primaries should never be underestimated.


Their support in 2012 helped to lift Kathleen Kane, an unknown assistant prosecutor from Scranton, over well-liked, union-backed Congressman Patrick Murphy in the state attorney general’s race. They also helped former Congressman Mark Critz to defeat fellow Congressman Jason Altmire for a House seat that was combined in redistricting.


If Margolies flubs her frontrunner status by deliberately missing debates and burning her campaign money, it’s not difficult to imagine Bill Clinton coming into town to hold a glitzy fundraiser for her, then chasing it with an ad full of nostalgia about how her decisive vote on his budget cost her seat in 1993 but saved his presidency — and how he is ready to return the favor.


That stuff works, folks. All of the Democrats in this race, or watching it, realize that.


But Margolies’ campaign style is tying Philadelphia-area Democrats in knots, especially her decision not to debate. For many Democrats still sitting on the political fence, her decision helps to perpetuate a feeling that she is running out of validation and vindication; they would rather hear her robustly debate with her competitors about the Affordable Care Act, the NSA’s surveillance of Americans, and other pressing issues that drive “super-D” primary voters to the polls.


This race is the country’s first glimpse of what a post-Obama Democratic Party could become. Despite all of its post-2012 proclamations, Organizing for America — Obama’s campaign machine — probably will not run the world, let alone a very twitchy party that is ready to break away from the Obama years and stretch out on its own.


Obama has disappointed many progressive Democrats; he’s lost the connection with many blue-collar Democrats; he’s done no favors for many establishment Democrats on a host of issues, including helping to lose their House majority. As for Democrat outsiders, his presidency only emboldens their chances to be authentic change-agents.


Keep your eye on this race: It’s a small but telling glimpse of what 2016 will look like for the party.

Krauthammer: Benghazi "Won"t Even Be An Issue" For Hillary In 2016 Nomination Fight





SHANNON BREAM: Charles, do you think that Benghazi will factor in at all — in the primary or the general should Hillary Clinton be the Democratic nominee?


CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: It won’t in the primary. It won’t even be an issue. I think the status she enjoys among Democrats is semi-divine. It’s not going to be a coronation. It’s going to be a worship service. And it will go on for about six or eight months. I don’t think there is any serious challenger. There might be noise, but I don’t even think that the left that we’ve talked about is that the significant. It’s a noisy left. But, I don’t see any impediment on the way to her nomination. But I think she is going to be rather weak if she decides to run, which I think she likely is. She will be a relatively weak opponent. And Republicans, I think, are going to have a really good shot at the White House.

Mark Levin: Republican Nominee In 2016 Doesn"t Need "Executive Experience"


MARK LEVIN: Lincoln is considered our greatest, if not our second greatest president by most. He was never a governor. He was never a senator. He was an extraordinary man, and he was a public man, and people knew much about him. The Lincoln-Douglas debates — and those weren’t the only debates! He gave some magnificent speeches too. But again, all that aside. My point is to categorize and say we have to have a person who’s served as governor because they make executive decisions. Okay great.


And that’ll be the strength of that candidate, should that candidate run. But thats not the test. The test is to get the right person. And the right person will make mostly the right decisions. Take a measure of the person. So if you have somebody who has been a governor, or just a garden variety Republican. Whether they’re a big-government Republican or a RINO. I don’t care if they’ve been a governor or not. I’m not interested. They have to come to the office or seek the office with a certain set of a principles and value that we share. Someone who is intelligent, confident, and articulate and knowledgeable, and has a capacity for the office. They’ve been governor, great. If they haven’t, fine.

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul gave the first iron clad hint that he is gearing up for a 2016 Presidential campaign, stating Monday that he thinks Americans are looking for “someone like myself” to vote for.


“I think they want someone outside of, you know, what’s been going on.” Paul said, referring to the political sideshow in Washington.


“For example, someone like myself who has been promoting term limits,” Paul told Fox News Monday. “Someone who says we shouldn’t have, you know, decade after decade longevity up here.”


The Senator left many believing that he was offering himself as a potential candidate to Republican voters as well as the party leadership, noting that he feels he is still “perceived as an outsider… should that be the choice at sometime in 2016.”



Clearly referring to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Paul also stated that “I don’t know that a governor is necessarily an outsider. A governor can be an insider as much as anybody else.”


When asked if he thinks Christie is a “true conservative”, following the Governor’s support for Medicaid expansion under Obamacare, Paul replied “You know, depends on how you define that; if you have a very loose definition, probably.”


“If you look at a lot of issues like on whether or not we should accept Obamacare, bring it to our state, expand Medicaid: those would be, I think at best, moderate positions.” Paul added.


The comments are sure to appeal to voters who believe Christie, a former attorney and lobbyist, to be an establishment backed ringer.


Paul also stated that he feels it is imperative to have forged a real profession before entering politics, prompting Charles Krauthammer to quip “Like being an eye doctor, for example?”


Paul has previously stated that he is not yet considering a 2016 run. However, the Paul family is clearly preparing for the eventuality.


In further comments during the interview, Paul spoke about the Obamacare debacle, expressing concern that Americans are going to see rates skyrocket under the new healthcare law.


“If young people don’t buy it the price in a year is going to be higher for the unhealthy people and it will essentially be a high risk pool which is very expensive to cover. and the prices go higher and higher and the only fix becomes more mandates,” said Paul.


The Senator noted that many Americans are beginning to realise that the push for the new law is less about healthcare and more to do with infringing liberty.


“It’s about freedom of choice versus coercion. The president is coercing you into four plans and he’s telling you exactly what you can buy.” Paul stated.

Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is engaged in a campaign to change The Constitution to allow him to run for president in 2016, according to reports.


The New York Post claims that Schwarzenegger has been publicly discussing his plans to file suit that would overturn the rule written into the Constitution that bars foreign-born citizens from taking the office of President or Vice President.


“Schwarzenegger has been talking openly about working on getting the constitutional rules changed so he can run for president in 2016. He is ready to file legal paperwork to challenge the rules.” the Post notes, citing an unnamed source.


Section 1 of Article Two of the Constitution sets forth the eligibility requirements for serving as president of the United States:


“No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.”



The Twelfth Amendment also states, “No person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.”


Born in Austria, Schwarzenegger has been a US citizen since 1983, which enabled him to successfully run for Governorship in 2003.


The Fourteenth Amendment notes that “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”


Under Article One of the United States Constitution, representatives and senators are only required to be U.S. citizens.


Schwarzenegger has said several times that he would definitely run for President, should the law be changed. Most recently he told Jay Leno in 2010 that he would jump at the opportunity “Without any doubt.”


Any amendment to the Constitution must be approved by two-thirds majority in the House and the Senate, then must be ratified by at least 38 of the 50 states.


As we have previously reported, Schwarzenegger has, over the years, made several disturbing comments to the effect that it is his dream to reach a position of power akin to a dictator.


In 1976, Arnie told Rolling Stone: “I feel you only can have a few leaders… and then the rest is followers. I feel that I am the born leader and that I’ve always impressed with being the leader. I hate to be the follower. I had this when I was a little boy… I didn’t think about money. I thought about the fame, about just being the greatest. I was dreaming about being some dictator of a country or some savior like Jesus.”


His Nazi ties are also well documented. Gustav Schwarzenegger, the actor’s father, was a member of the Sturmabteilung, or SA, the Nazi party’s paramilitary wing. News reports about the elder Schwarzenegger’s Nazi links first surfaced in 1990.


Film producer George Butler, who chronicled Schwarzenegger’s rise to fame as a champion bodybuilder in the 1970′s, circulated a book proposal in the late 90s that quoted the young Schwarzenegger expressing admiration for Hitler.


The producer wrote in his book proposal that in the 1970′s, he considered Mr. Schwarzenegger a “flagrant, outspoken admirer of Hitler.,” the New York Times reported in 2003. In the proposal, Mr. Butler also said he had witnessed Schwarzenegger playing “Nazi marching songs from long-playing records in his collection at home” and said that the actor “frequently clicked his heels and pretended to be an S.S. officer.”


Schwarzenegger was also best buddies with Kurt Waldheim, the former secretary general of the United Nations who had a past as a Nazi who participated in atrocities during World War II.

The Fourteenth Amendment notes that “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”


Under Article One of the United States Constitution, representatives and senators are only required to be U.S. citizens.


Schwarzenegger has said several times that he would definitely run for President, should the law be changed. Most recently he told Jay Leno in 2010 that he would jump at the opportunity “Without any doubt.”


Any amendment to the Constitution must be approved by two-thirds majority in the House and the Senate, then must be ratified by at least 38 of the 50 states.


As we have previously reported, Schwarzenegger has, over the years, made several disturbing comments to the effect that it is his dream to reach a position of power akin to a dictator.


In 1976, Arnie told Rolling Stone: “I feel you only can have a few leaders… and then the rest is followers. I feel that I am the born leader and that I’ve always impressed with being the leader. I hate to be the follower. I had this when I was a little boy… I didn’t think about money. I thought about the fame, about just being the greatest. I was dreaming about being some dictator of a country or some savior like Jesus.”


His Nazi ties are also well documented. Gustav Schwarzenegger, the actor’s father, was a member of the Sturmabteilung, or SA, the Nazi party’s paramilitary wing. News reports about the elder Schwarzenegger’s Nazi links first surfaced in 1990.


Film producer George Butler, who chronicled Schwarzenegger’s rise to fame as a champion bodybuilder in the 1970′s, circulated a book proposal in the late 90s that quoted the young Schwarzenegger expressing admiration for Hitler.


The producer wrote in his book proposal that in the 1970′s, he considered Mr. Schwarzenegger a “flagrant, outspoken admirer of Hitler.,” the New York Times reported in 2003. In the proposal, Mr. Butler also said he had witnessed Schwarzenegger playing “Nazi marching songs from long-playing records in his collection at home” and said that the actor “frequently clicked his heels and pretended to be an S.S. officer.”


Schwarzenegger was also best buddies with Kurt Waldheim, the former secretary general of the United Nations who had a past as a Nazi who participated in atrocities during World War II.

Schwarzenegger Wants Constitution Changed For A 2016 Presidential Run

Add another name to the short list of Democrats seriously considering a run for president in 2016.


In an interview with RealClearPolitics, former Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer indicated that he may launch a White House bid, even if front-runner Hillary Clinton also enters the race.


“I still hold the people of Iowa and New Hampshire in high regard,” Schweitzer said of the nation’s first caucus and primary states. “The people of Iowa are a whole lot like the people of Montana. And, of course, New Hampshire’s a lot like Montana. We don’t have a sales tax. ‘Live Free or Die’ — we understand that notion in Montana.”


A popular two-term governor who once used a red-hot branding iron to veto several bills passed by the Republican-controlled state legislature, Schweitzer would offer a hefty dose of rural folksiness against the East Coast urbanites in the potential Democratic field, including Clinton, Vice President Joe Biden, and Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley.


Asked whether there would be room for a populist candidate to run a credible race against Clinton, Schweitzer left no doubt that he can envision himself in that very role.


After noting that a high percentage of Democratic primary voters are women and agreeing that it is “time for a woman president,” Schweitzer quickly qualified his assessment by adding what would likely be a central tenet of his pitch in a campaign against Clinton:


“There’s a whole lot of America that looks at each other and says, ‘Well, there’s 340 million people living in America. Isn’t there somebody other than a Bush or a Clinton who can be president in these modern times? Isn’t there hope for somebody who’s running a business or who has served overseas or comes from a different occupation to become president? Are we now in the era of royalty again?’ So I think there’s some level of frustration about that.”


Shortly after leaving office, Schweitzer executed a hostile takeover of Stillwater Mining — the largest publicly traded mining company in Montana. He also owns several ranches across the state.


His latest comments about potentially running against Clinton are in stark contrast to an appraisal he made to the Associated Press a year ago. At that time, Schweitzer said, “If Hillary runs, she walks away with the nomination and then beats whichever Republican.”


But as he has settled into his private sector role, Schweitzer’s views on whether anyone can beat the former senator and secretary of state appear to have changed significantly.


After being term-limited last year, he was heavily recruited by national Democrats to run for his state’s open Senate seat in 2014 but announced in July that he would not do so.


His heavy use of the veto pen — or veto branding iron, in his case — and reputation as a competent fiscal steward earned him consistently high approval ratings in Republican-leaning Montana.


Schweitzer’s tough-talking leadership style, anti-Washington ethos, and proven ability to win in a state that has not been friendly to his own party in presidential elections might draw Democratic comparisons to New Jersey’s Republican Gov. Chris Christie, another 2016 presidential aspirant.


But the pro-gun, pro-coal policies that worked for Schweitzer so well in Montana would be a far tougher sell in a Democratic primary.


Another of Schweitzer’s most immediate challenges in mounting a serious campaign would be to build his name recognition against the universally known and already nearly anointed Clinton.


But in the interview with RCP, Schweitzer suggested that his down-home persona and knack for generating free media coverage might keep him in the hunt, particularly in Iowa — a state that has not been friendly territory for Clinton in the past.


“Who would’ve thunk Obama would come out of this thing when you had, my God, Dodd, Biden, Billy Richardson, Hillary Clinton,” Schweitzer said of the 2008 Democratic nominating contest. “So the nice thing about the people of Iowa is they ain’t going to let the rest of America make up their minds for them.”

All indications coming from the Paul family suggest that there will be another Paul in the running for President when campaigning gears up again. In an MSNBC appearance this morning, Ron Paul suggested that he believes his son, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul will mount a bid. Rand Paul’s mother Carol also echoed the sentiments.


“I would think so, he wouldn’t be doing what he’s doing, but I haven’t had a conversation of what the plan is,” Ron Paul said on the Morning Joe programme. “He’s been pretty independent.”


“I think if you look at where’s he’s traveling, which states he’s going to, I would think it’s on his mind, but I haven’t had any personal conversations,” said the former Texas congressman.


“I would think that he’s weighing it and it depends on the circumstances. Sometimes in politics you get beat up all of a sudden,” he said. “But I think he’s weighing it. I think he’s doing a very good job.” Paul added.


In a profile on the Paul family in Vogue magazine, published Wednesday, Rand Paul’s mother, and Ron Paul’s wife Carol said she thinks the prospect of a Rand White House campaign in 2016 “feels real,” while cautioning that there is still work to be done.


“Ron thinks it’s terribly early to be starting a campaign,” Carol Paul said of her husband, “Rand says he won’t declare that he’s going to run until after 2014… . Groundwork has to be set.”


Rand Paul’s (R-Ky.) wife, Kelley, was more cautious, noting that she feared possible reprisals against her family, should her husband opt to run.


“Because in this day and age it’s mostly about character assassination,” she said. “When I think of the tens of millions of dollars in opposition research that they’d be aiming right at us and our family — that’s what it’s about.”


Kelley Paul has been labeled Rand’s secret weapon, having worked closely on GOP Sen. Ted Cruz’s successful campaign, as well as serving on the board of Helping a Hero, a charity that builds houses for wounded war veterans. The Vogue piece suggests that this will enable Paul to solidify his anti-war stance and win the support of veterans and serving military men and women.


Rand Paul himself told Fox News in August that he’s considering a run, but wouldn’t make a decision for “probably a year.” He also notes in the latest piece that he has a “gut feeling” that Hillary Clinton will not run, despite constant speculation that she is being primed by the Washington elite.


“All the polls show her trouncing any opponents,” Paul said, adding that it would enhance Republican chances if Clinton were not in the frame.


The piece also reveals that longtime Democratic strategist James Carville believes that should Rand Paul run, “he’ll be considered a first-tier candidate.”

Christie: Yankees 2016 jersey "outrageous"


There’s no chance devout New York Mets fan Chris Christie will don the Yankee pinstripes.


Christie was a special co-host of the “Boomer and Carton in the Morning” radio show on WFAN Monday. Co-host Craig Carton offered the New Jersey governor a Yankees jersey with “Christie 2016″ on the back, which Christie refused to try on.


“Let me just say there’s no chance,” Christie said when he saw the jersey. When he saw the 2016 on the back, he added, “Now there’s two reasons there’s no chance.”


Christie, who said he has been a Mets fan since he was 7 years old, refused to stand up and take a picture with the jersey or try it on. He also assured Mets owner Fred Wilpon that he would never wear the jersey.


“I just want to say this to Mr. Wilpon, who’s out there. There’s no chance I’m ever putting this on, hanging it anyway sir. I am with the Mets. This is outrageous,” Christie said.


Carton also gave a second nod to Christie as a presidential candidate in 2016, presenting him with a second jersey that said “President Gov. Christie 2016″ on the back.
