South Africa Hotel Offers Fake Slum Experience

(Newser) – Well, this is … interesting: You can now pay half the average South African’s monthly salary—or $ 82 a night—to stay in a slum. Not a real one, as some one billion people worldwide do; instead, Gizmodo reports, South Africa’s Emoya Luxury Hotel and Spa is offering the experience of “a Shanty within the safe environment of a private game reserve.” The fake slum, near Bloemfontein, is offered as tours of actual slums gain popularity.

And though it’s got realistic touches like a “‘long-drop’ outside toilet” and facilities for building your own fire, it’s also “the only Shanty Town in the world equipped with under-floor heating and wireless internet access!,” Emoya’s site notes, adding that the place is “ideal for team building, braais (barbecues), fancy theme parties, and an experience of a lifetime.” Four people can stay in one of the available corrugated-iron shacks, and there’s room for 52 people total, This Is Africa reports, wondering if the offering is “the most tasteless and offensive tourism idea ever.”

Mark Levin: Republican Nominee In 2016 Doesn"t Need "Executive Experience"

MARK LEVIN: Lincoln is considered our greatest, if not our second greatest president by most. He was never a governor. He was never a senator. He was an extraordinary man, and he was a public man, and people knew much about him. The Lincoln-Douglas debates — and those weren’t the only debates! He gave some magnificent speeches too. But again, all that aside. My point is to categorize and say we have to have a person who’s served as governor because they make executive decisions. Okay great.

And that’ll be the strength of that candidate, should that candidate run. But thats not the test. The test is to get the right person. And the right person will make mostly the right decisions. Take a measure of the person. So if you have somebody who has been a governor, or just a garden variety Republican. Whether they’re a big-government Republican or a RINO. I don’t care if they’ve been a governor or not. I’m not interested. They have to come to the office or seek the office with a certain set of a principles and value that we share. Someone who is intelligent, confident, and articulate and knowledgeable, and has a capacity for the office. They’ve been governor, great. If they haven’t, fine.

Kerry Pushes For Attack On Syria: "We Will Not Repeat" The Iraq Experience

SECRETARY OF STATE JOHN KERRY: Our intelligence community has carefully reviewed and re-reviewed information regarding this attack. And I will tell you it has done so more than mindful of the Iraq experience. We will not repeat that moment. Accordingly, we have taken unprecedented steps to declassify and make facts available to people who can judge for themselves.

But still, in order to protect sources and methods, some of what we know will only be released to members of Congress, the representatives of the American people. That means that some things we do know, we can’t talk about publicly.

A transcript of Secretary Kerry’s remarks can be accessed here.

"Hero of War" - Rise Against Song Captures Iraq War Veteran"s Tragic Experience

We conclude Democracy Now!’s 2013 Memorial Day special with the video for the song, “Hero of War,” by Rise Against. The Chicago-based punk band’s Tim McIlrath sang the antiwar song for protesters outside the NATO Summit in Chicago earlier this month. It tells the story of an Iraq war veteran reflecting on his experiences while serving in the military. “I kicked in the door, I yelled my commands. The children, they cried, but I got my man. We took him away, a bag over his face, from his family and his friends,” McIlrath sings. The video for the song has been viewed more than 13 million times online.
