More Americans Than Ever Support Gay Marriage, Leaving Christian Right Behind

Even white evangelical Protestants are starting to shift their opinions.

In America today, it"s more normal to support gay marriage than not to.

That"s according to findings from the Public Religion Research Institute, a non-profit, nonpartisan research organization. By comparing results of a survey it conducted in 2013 with one it did a decade ago, PRRI found that today, over half of Americans support same-sex marriage, up from just 32% in 2003. Its findings are similar to those of the Pew Research Center, Gallup, and other poling organizations, which have all noted a significant increase in support for same-sex marriage in the past 10 years.

Certain groups stick out as being far less supportive than others. Only 39% of African Americans support same-sex marriage, compared with 53% of Hispanics and 53% of whites. There is a nine-point difference between men and women, with 57% of women in support, compared to 48% of men. Sixty-four percent of Democrats and 57% of independents support same-sex marriage, compared to only 34% of Republicans, a gap that has increased by 21 percent points in the last decade.

But regardless of differences between groups, within groups, it"s becoming more popular to support same-sex matrimony, even among those who have been traditionally staunchly against it. Take white evangelical Protestants, who continue to be some of the least supportive: while only 27% support same-sex marriage today, that"s a significant increase from the 12% who supported it in 2003. Support for same-sex marriage is strongest among Millennials (people aged 18-33), with 69% in support, compared with only 37% of the Silent Generation (those aged 68 and older). The “generational tidal wave,” as PRRI CEO Robert Jones calls it, holds true across religious and political lines: for example, whereas only 34% of Republicans overall support same-sex marriage, half of Millennial Republicans support it.

Personal connection and perception matter: knowing someone who"s gay, and thinking that sexuality is biologically determined, strongly influences whether an individual supports gay marriage. The difference is striking: while 63% of those who support same-sex marriage have a close friend or family member who identifies as gay or lesbian, only 36% of those who oppose do. More Americans have family and friends who are openly gay than ever before: 65% today, versus just 22% in 1993.

Notions of whether being gay is something you"re born with, or something you acquire through upbringing and environment, has also shifted in the last decade. In 2003, 38% of Americans thought a person"s sexuality was biologically determined. Today, 44% do. People"s views on the topic are positively correlated with their support for gay marriage, with 76% of those who believe it is biologically determined supporting same-sex marriage, compared with only 28% among those who believe it"s a learned trait.

“In a certain sense sexuality becomes less dangerous if it is fixed early,” explains Clyde Wilcox, professor of government at Georgetown University, who spoke at the launch of the report in Washington DC this week. “It"s not contagious, and it"s not anyone"s fault. You can"t discriminate because it"s not a choice.” Groups least supportive of same-sex nuptials—evangelicals, Republicans, African Americans—are less likely to think sexuality is biologically determined than those who are not, and less likely to have a close friend or family member who identifies as gay or lesbian.

Religious conservatives may be getting left behind as the country changes its mind. With the exception of Jews (83% of whom support gay marriage), religious people are far less likely to support gay marriage than those who are not. (Religiously unaffiliated people trail closely behind Jews in their support, followed by white mainline Protestants. Around 50% of white Catholics, Hispanic Catholics and Hispanic Protestants support gay marriage. Thirty-five percent of black Protestants do.) Americans also tend to view religions as not supportive of LGBT rights, a perception that may be hurting their cause. Survey findings demonstrate a significant drop in religious affiliation across America (22% are unaffiliated today, versus 8% in 2003), which may be in part linked to negative perceptions of religious" groups treatment of LGBT people.

“Nearly one-third of Millennials who left their childhood religion say unfavorable church teachings about or treatment of gay and lesbian people played a significant role in their decision to head for the exit,” says Jones. Fifty-eight percentof Americans, including 70% of Millennials, say that religious groups" stance on LGBT issues is alienating young people. Young people and those who identify as LGBT are far more likely to be religiously unaffiliated than the population at large.

Jones says negative public perception of religious groupings on LGBT rights and a lag in support for gay marriage among worshippers may provoke change by religious institutions. “Can theology just take its cues from public opinion? Most theologians would have a problem with that position,” he says. “But what does it do when public opinion moves over here, and theology is over here?”

While LGBT and their allies have reason to celebrate the national upsurge in support, PRRI notes that a large proportion of Americans, especially religious Americans, think that same-sex sexual relationships are immoral (although they may still support gay marriage), and that LGBT face some of the highest discrimination in the country. And even though there"s a national shift in attitudes on same-sex marriage, it still isn"t a priority for most Americans. Only 24% of Americans say same-sex marriage is a critical issue for them personally, with 25% saying it"s one of several important issues. Nearly 50% of Americans say that the issue is not that important to them personally, with same-sex marriage ranking below jobs and unemployment, healthcare, immigration, HIV/AIDS and abortion.

Moreover, just because there"s increasing support for same-sex marriage, it doesn"t mean the US is becoming less conservative as a whole. “We"re not winning on guns. Sometimes Millennials are the most conservative on pro-choice. It"s not that these are changing attitudes on sexuality in general,” notes Wilcox. “Since 1992, the percentage of people who say that LGBT sex is always wrong has plummeted, but those who say that sex outside of marriage is always wrong went up.”

Nationally, Americans are more likely to consider themselves pro-life (48%) than pro-choice (45%), and more likely to identify as conservatives (38%) than liberals (23%). Wilcox suggests that while other issues remain polarized, the rise of LGBT people in pop culture helped to make the issue more palatable, which made it easier for people to come out to their family and friends.

The Conservative Crusade For Christian Sharia Law

Biblia-1-Daily Beast‘s Dean Obeidallah warns that “It’s not just the fringe anymore. Mainstream conservatives are trying to bring America’s laws into agreement with ‘God’s law’”:

The question isn’t: Will conservatives push to enact laws based on the Bible? We are way beyond that.  The real questions are:

1. How many more of these laws do they want to impose? And,

2. What will our nation look like if their crusade is successful to bring America’s laws into agreement with “God’s law”?

To some on the right, America is a “Christian nation”—like Saudi Arabia is a Muslim nation—meaning that our nation’s laws should be based on their religious text. These forces aren’t moved by Thomas Jefferson’s famous letter in which he spoke of the need to create, “a wall of separation between church and state.” Nor will they be swayed by citing Ronald Reagan’s words, “Church and state are, and must remain, separate.”

Just last week we saw another example of creeping Christian Sharia Law with a bill passed by Kansas’ House of Representatives that would allow people and businesses to deny services to same sex couples if it violated their “religious beliefs.” This proposed law would in essence legally sanction discrimination against gay Americans because same sex marriage is not approved by the Bible. Similar bills are pending in other State’s including Mississippi, Idaho, and Arizona.

And in the past few years, we have seen pro-life Christian groups successfully lobby State legislatures to restrict access to abortions. They have also raised religious, not public policy, objections to the government funding birth control.

But here’s the alarming thing: These views are no longer the fringe of American politics. They are increasingly become mainstream conservative fare…

Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries: Christian Businesses Must Follow Demands of Gay Customers

Townhall.com:

The owners of a Christian bakery who refused to make a wedding cake for a lesbian couple are facing hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines after they were found guilty of violating the couple’s civil rights.

The Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries said they found “substantial evidence” that Sweet Cakes by Melissa discriminated against the lesbian couple and violated the Oregon Equality Act of 2007, a law that protects the rights of the LGBT community.

Last year, the bakery’s owners refused to make a wedding cake for Rachel Cryer and Laurel Bowman, of Portland, citing their Christian beliefs. The couple then filed a complaint with the state.

“The investigation concludes that the bakery is not a religious institution under the law and that the business’ policy of refusing to make same-sex wedding cakes represents unlawful discrimination based on sexual orientation,” said Charlie Burr, a spokesman for the Bureau of Labor and Industries.

The backlash against Aaron and Melissa Klein, owners of the bakery, was severe. Gay rights groups launched protests and pickets outside the family’s store. They threatened wedding vendors who did business with the bakery. And, Klein told me, the family’s children were the targets of death threats.

The family eventually had to close their retail shop and now operate the bakery out of their home. They posted a message vowing to stand firm in their faith. It read, in part:

“To all of you that have been praying for Aaron and I, I want to say thank you. I know that your prayers are being heard. I feel such a peace with all of this that is going on. Even though there are days that are hard and times of struggle we still feel that the Lord is in this. It is His fight and our situation is in His hands….Please continue to pray for our family. God is great, amazing and all powerful. I know He has a plan.”

Under state law, the complaint against the bakery now moves into a period of reconciliation. If they can’t reach an agreement, formal civil charges could be filed and the Kleins could face hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines.

Last August, Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian told The Oregonian, their desire is to rehabilitate businesses like the one owned by the Christian couple.

“Everybody is entitled to their own beliefs, but that doesn’t mean that folks have the right to discriminate,” he told the newspaper. “The goal is never to shut down a business. The goal is to rehabilitate.”

Aaron Klein told me there will be no reconciliation and there will be no rehabilitation. He and his wife will not back down from their Christian beliefs.

How a Satanic Goat Statue Threatens the Christian Right

When Christian activists in Oklahoma got a Ten Commandments monument placed on capitol grounds, they never expected a backlash like this.

The design for the Satanist statue proposed for the lawn of the Oklahoma state capitol is a delight: Baphomet, a goat-headed pagan idol, sits gracefully on a chair, gazing beatifically forward while holding two fingers aloft. Two children, a boy and a girl, stand on either side of him, looking worshipfully upon the goatly representation of the occult.

For the Satanists who designed the statue and their supporters, the joke is obvious, though no less hilarious. Baphomet is a figure likely made up by the Inquisition for the purpose of accusing its victims of worshipping him. Satanists today use his face as a way to mock modern fundamentalist Christians for their tendency to concoct imaginary enemies to stoke their own paranoid fantasies about being persecuted.

Hilarious as the statue is, it was designed to make a serious point. Christian fundamentalists in Oklahoma managed to get a Ten Commandments monument placed on capitol grounds in 2012. Though the supporters of the monument deny it, it’s an obvious attempt by fundamentalists to get the state government to endorse Christianity above all other religious beliefs, in a direct violation of the Constitution’s ban on state establishment of religion. The ACLU of Oklahoma has sued, arguing, “When the government literally puts one faith on a pedestal, it sends a strong message to Oklahomans of other faiths that they are less than equal.”

No doubt the Satanists expect Oklahoma to reject their petition, which is the point, of course. By rejecting the petition, the legislature will make it clear they really are elevating one religion over another, strengthening the ACLU’s case against the state.

Naturally, conservative politicians are confident the statue will not end up on capitol grounds. Rep. Paul Wesselhoft told CNN that the statue wouldn"t be disqualifed because of Satan, but because the statue has “no historical significance for the state of Oklahoma.” It is worth noting that neither do the Ten Commandments, which are believed by Christians to have been written somewhere in the Middle East. Rep. Bob Cleveland was more overt, admitting that the difference between the statues is one endorses his favored religion while the other does not.

“In my opinion this Satanist monument does not meet with the values of Oklahomans,” he said, basically admitting that the Ten Commandments statue is an endorsement of the “values”, i.e. faith of Christianity.

Rep. Don Armes was even more blunt in making it clear that the Oklahoma state legislature rejects religious pluralism and is only interested in elevating Christianity as the only legitimate religion. “I think we need to be tolerant of people who think different than us,” he said, but of course there"s a “but.”

“But this is Oklahoma and that"s not going to fly here.”

In other words, we need to be tolerant of other people, but they are expected to sit down and know their place. Unsurprisingly, the Oklahoma legislature has already taken a major pre-emptive strike against the possiblity that any other religion or belief system but Christianity get representation on the capitol grounds. After receiving requests for monuments not just from Satanists, but from Hindus and animal rights activists, the legislature decided to place a moratorium on the building of monuments. The message is crystal-clear: The Oklahoma state legislature is not interested in reflecting the diversity of Americans, but only wants to elevate Christians above everyone else.

Sure, Satanism isn’t a real religion, though it’s delightful to consider how the fundamentalists behind the Ten Commandments statue probably don’t realize that and will have heaving fits of fear at the possibility that the devil is trying to weasel his way into Oklahoma politics. Satanists will be the first to tell you they don’t really think Satan is real, and instead just rally around the character to make a political point about the arbitrary nature of religion. But that shouldn’t matter. There are plenty of Christians who take a less than literal approach to their religion, saying they believe God is love or that Jesus was just a guy with some nice ideas. Their beliefs aren’t generally considered any less valid for it, and so it’s unfair to hold Satanists to a double standard.

Which is why prank-minded groups like the Satanists are doing such an important public service: They are able to challenge religious fundamentalists in their attempts to stomp out freedom of religion and religious plurality without having to worry overmuch about enduring the oppression real religious minorities face. When a Muslim or Jewish group objects to the religious right’s attempts to enshrine Christianity as an official or endorsed state religion, they run the risk of provoking the exact fear of religious pluralism that leads conservative Christians to do things like build Ten Commandments monuments in the first place. Ugly prejudice against minority religions is why Christian conservatives want the government to affirm their belief that theirs is the one true religion. When religious minorities push back, many Christians use that pushback as evidence that “they” are out to destroy Christian America.

But the Satanists don’t care if you hate and fear them. Indeed, the point of being a Satanist is to delight in the irrational hate and fear that your fake religion provokes in the true believers. You can’t worry about your religion being demonized, since you pretend to worship demons already. You definitely can’t worry about your fellow believers being oppressed, because none of you are really believers in the first place.

It’s not just Satanists who are in a position to turn themselves into a mirror so we can see some of the silliness that stems from trying to mix government with religion. Pastafarians, another fake religion that pretends to worship a deity called the Flying Spaghetti Monster, get some of their licks in, as well. Recently, Christopher Schaeffer, a minister in the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, was elected to the Pomfret, N.Y. town council. He insisted on being sworn in wearing a colander on his head, a clear mockery of the various religious rites that are used to swear people into office.

Granted, the Satanists are making a more important point with their statue than Schaeffer is with his spaghetti strainer. They’re protesting religious fundamentalists who want to uphold their faith above all others, but the swearing-in ceremony that Schaeffer is mocking is not one that is known for being religiously exclusive. On the contrary, most governments will let you swear in with any religious tradition you want, which is why Schaeffer was allowed to do the colander stunt in the first place. Still, the prank makes an important point about how, even with the religious tolerance built into the swearing-in ceremony, the ceremony still reinforces the idea that religious beliefs should play an important part of one"s role as a politician. That alone should trouble us, because ideally, leaders of a secular society would leave their religious beliefs at the door and choose to govern not by religious faith, but by reason and an interest in representing all their constituents, regardless of belief, equally.

After all, most of us are hired for jobs and do those jobs without anyone mentioning our religious beliefs at all, because they are irrelevant to the work we do. Why then do politicians in a supposedly secular government have to make a fuss over their religion right from the beginning? Wouldn’t be better if everyone just made a secular promise to do their jobs properly, putting them all on the same page?

This is why pranksters with fake religions are striking a blow for a better understanding of what it really would take to create a government that not only avoids overt favoritism for any single belief, but really does create a welcoming space for all. After all, if our religious pluralism has room even for people who admit they’re making it up as they go along, it definitely has room for all flavors of belief, whether they’re deadly serious, just for fun, or somewhere in between.

‘Tis the season…to attack all things Christian

Christmas is under attack!

Atheist_billboard_against_ChristmasWe are witnessing God and his word under relentless attack, especially by secular humanists who are demanding the removal of God and his word from virtually every area of public life.  In its place, they insert their own religion of secular humanism, which treats man and his government as supreme in authority above God.  America has seen:

*  Secular universities such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc. which were founded as Christian institutions become humanistic schools.

*  The Bible removed from public schools.

*  Prayer and creation taken out of these same schools.

*  The Pledge of Allegiance and it’s phrase “one nation under God” removed from public schools.

*  Increased attacks on the U.S. motto “In God we trust” including our own president telling foreign nations that our motto is “E Pluribus Unum” and intentionally leaving out “Under God” when he quotes historical documents like the Declaration of Independence

*  The removal of the 10 Commandments displays from public places.

*  Attempts to force an acceptance of homosexual behavior and abortion upon Christian institutions (and even churches).

With these kind of anti-Christian attacks, did you really believe that even Christmas would be spared?  Today, conflicts surrounding Christmas include:  refusals to allow staff to say, “Merry Christmas” but “Happy Holidays” instead in government offices, public schools, stores, etc.; the forced removal of Nativity scenes from public places (and even from some private places); writing X-mas instead of Christmas; and even claims that Christmas was originally a pagan idea.

Yes, as the influence of secularists has grown, there has been an escalating war against Christmas.  Regardless, for me and my house, we will serve the Lord and

Continue to say and celebrate Christmas throughout this beautiful season!

Chaplains Mocked, Forced out of VA Program for Their Christian Beliefs

Two military chaplains are suing the federal Veterans Affairs department after they said they were mocked for their Christian beliefs and forced out of a Veterans Affairs chaplain training program.

In 2012, Lieutenant Commander Dan Klender, a Navy chaplain, and Major Steven Firtko, a retired Army chaplain, enrolled in the VA’s Clinical Pastoral Education Center program in San Diego. The class is a requirement for chaplains wishing to serve at VA hospitals. The two chaplains are members of the Conservative Baptist Association of America, a denomination that places a high priority on Scripture and faith in Christ.

The two chaplains charge that they were ridiculed and taunted by the program’s director, Nancy Dietsch, a VA employee with a reputation for antagonism toward evangelical Christians, charged John Wells, the attorney representing the two chaplains in the suit. “She’s been very, very critical of Christians,” Wells told Fox News. “Instead of teaching anything dealing with faith issues, she’s dealing with a holistic, humanistic approach. It’s the idea that the spirit comes from within.”

The lawsuit, filed against Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki, charges, among other things, that Dietsch said VA policy forbade chaplains from praying in Jesus’ name, and that chaplains could not quote Scripture in her class.

Specifically, during one class discussion on faith, Major Firtko cited the Scripture saying that “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” According to Fox News, “Dietsch told the chaplain he was not allowed to quote from the Bible in her classroom.”

During one class session, Dietsch said that she believed God could be either man or woman. But when Firtko referred to “The Lord’s Prayer,” which refers to “our Father which art in heaven,” Dietsch “angrily pounded her fist on the table and shouted, ‘Do not quote Scripture in this class,’” the lawsuit contends.

On another occasion, according to the lawsuit, “Dietsch insisted that evolution was fact and that she believed mankind evolved. Chaplain Firtko stated he believed in the Genesis statement that ‘in the beginning, God created the Heavens and Earth.’ In response, Ms. Dietsch pounded her fist on the table and ordered Chaplain Firtko to not quote Scripture in the classroom.”

The lawsuit charges that in January of this year Dietsch declared to the chaplains enrolled in the class that there are many ways to heaven and that one religion cannot be right while all others are wrong. When Firtko pointed out that Jesus said that “no one comes to the Father but through me,” Diestch again demanded that he stop quoting Scripture and said to him, as quoted in the lawsuit: “If you believe your beliefs are right, and everyone else’s are wrong, you do not belong in this program.”

By February of this year Dietsch’s harassment of the two chaplains had become so severe, the lawsuit claims, that Klender withdrew from the program. Meanwhile, Firtko had been placed on a six-week probation period after being threatened with dismissal. A week after Klender withdrew Firtko received a letter, signed by Dietsch, booting him from the program, with Dietsch insisting that the “probation period is not yielding” the results she had desired.

In July, Klender and Firtko, along with their denomination, filed a formal complaint against Dietsch for religious discrimination and for violating the standards of the Association of Pastoral Continuing Education. The lawsuit seeks the return of the two chaplains into the program, along with an injunction that will prevent the VA from discriminating against Christian chaplains.

“No American choosing to serve in the armed forces should be openly ridiculed for his Christian faith, and that is most obviously true for chaplains participating in a chaplain training program,” said Wells, a retired Navy officer and executive director of the group Military-Veterans Advocacy. “Not only was the treatment these men received inappropriate, it was also a violation of federal law and the religious freedom guarantees of the First Amendment.”

At least 75 dead in suicide attack on Christian church in Pakistan

A suicide attack on a Christian church in Peshawar has left at least 75 dead with dozens more wounded.

The attack follows a rampage by Muslims through Christian neighborhoods a few months ago that saw 2 churches burned along with 100 homes.

New York Times:

The attack occurred as worshipers left the All Saints Church in the old quarter of the regional capital, Peshawar, after a service on Sunday morning. Up to 600 worshipers had attended the service and were leaving to receive free food being distributed on the lawn outside when two explosions ripped through the crowd.

Dozens of people were killed and more than 100 wounded, said Akhtar Ali Shah, the home secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province.

The death toll continued to rise as rescue workers sifted through the damaged church property, said Hamid Ullah, a rescue worker with Al Khidmat Foundation, a rescue service operated by the Jamaat-e-Islami political party. He said his team had recovered 75 bodies.

The dead included women, children and two Muslim police officers who had been posted outside the church. Witness reported scenes of mayhem as rescue workers ferried victims from the church, which witnesses said was scattered with body parts, shrapnel and bloodied clothing.

On Sunday afternoon, the bodies of 45 victims were placed in coffins and moved to the nearby Saint John’s Church, the oldest church in the city.

The coffins were placed next to one another in the church playground as dozens of grieving relatives and mourners gathered around. The mood was somber and angry.

A large contingent of police officers was deployed outside the church, and mourners were allowed to enter the compound after a thorough security check. Ambulances were allowed to enter the compound one by one as dead bodies were then placed in vehicles to take them to the morgue.

The police said it was not clear whether the attack was the work of a lone attacker or of two suicide bombers. Muhammad Ilyas, a senior officer in Peshawar, said it was more likely that a lone suicide bomber had first thrown a hand grenade before detonating his explosives.

“As soon as the service finished and the food was being distributed, all of a sudden we heard one explosion, followed by another,” said Azim Ghori, a witness.

It was the worst attack in years on the Christian minority in Pakistan, and coincides with a broader wave of attacks on religious minorities including Shiite Muslims this year.

Could the Pakistani government do more to protect Chirstians, Shias, and other religious minorities? Of course they can. They are great at giving lip service to ecumenism, but when it comes time to demonstrate their commitment to religious freedom, they drop the ball. Like Egypt under the Muslim Brotherhood, pretty words about protecting Christians were made hollow by radical preachers stirring up the population against the Copts.

The west continues to remain silent and conduct business as usual with middle eastern countries that countenance violence against Christians. And Christians in the region continue to vote with their feet and flee the oppression for more tolerant countries.

Syrian Christian village in crossfire as govt forces try to squeeze out Al Nusra rebels

Heavy fighting between rebels and regime forces continues in Syria’s predominately Christian village of Maaloula, which was earlier partially destroyed by Al-Qaeda affiliated rebels.

“There are clashes just inside the town in the western district between Popular Committees (militia) and rebel forces,” director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdul Rahman, told AFP.

“There are also clashes between soldiers backed by militias and rebel fighters around the area of one of the entrances to Maaloula,” he said.

State television citing a military source reports several rebels have been killed and their weapons destroyed as the army targeted a hotel and surrounding positions on the outskirts of Maaloula, north of Damascus, where a group of rebels were stationed.

Maaloula – a mountain village of 2,000 residents, 60km northeast of Damascus – is home to some of the most ancient Orthodox Christian relics and is a major pilgrimage destination. It’s also one of the very few places in the world where people still speak Aramaic, a biblical-era language that Jesus is believed to have spoken.

An RT news crew traveled to the site, but was not allowed to enter the city for safety reasons.

“The militants, around 300 people, hide [sic] in Safir hotel, there are ancient caves there under the village – they use them as well. They watch us – and we watch them, but if we start moving – they’ll attack us. But unlikely before the sunset,” a Syrian army soldier told RT’s Maria Finoshina.

However, the opposition Syrian National Coalition said members of the Free Syrian Army had withdrawn from Maaloula earlier this week, after destroying army posts at Maaloula.

Earlier this week, reports indicated that militants had broken into the village and shelled Christian churches with mortars, the Surya al-Ain website reported. A fire broke out in the temple of the Holy Prophet Elijah, and the building suffered damage.

The National Coalition said they were in the area for several hours, “but did not attack any church or convent”.
Meanwhile, the Syrian government sent reinforcements, including tanks and armored personnel carriers.

Government forces have taken up positions outside the village, Rami Abdul-Rahman said, adding that were clashes on Friday around the village, which is on a UNESCO list of proposed world heritage sites.

“The Syrian army plans an operation to clear Maaloula from Jabhat al Nusra rebels. There have been rumors that the rebels have left the village, but the army says they’re still there. Even if they leave Maaloula, they can hide nearby and return,” RT’s correspondent reports.

Earlier on Thursday, government war planes launched three air strikes on the checkpoint held by the rebels.

Until Wednesday, this mountain village of 2,000 residents near Damascus, had managed to remain mostly unaffected by the civil war that, according to UN estimates, has already claimed more than 100,000 lives.

Obama’s Syrian Allies Bombard Christian Village

Obama’s allies in Syria — those who will directly benefit from the coming US airstrikes — stepped up their genocide against Syrian Christians today, attacking Maaloula, a Christian village, indiscriminately using mortar shells fired from a hilltop above the village.

According to the press report:

“Maaloula, a mountain village some 40 miles (60 kilometers) northeast of Damascus, is home to about 2,000 residents, some of whom still speak a version of Aramaic, the ancient language of biblical times believed to have been spoken by Jesus.”

Will American Christians support a war for the genocide of Christians in Syria? Will they again cheer the military and troops as American missiles turn the balance of power toward those whose favorite pass-time is to behead Christian bishops with dull knives?

Is this the teaching of the Prince of Peace? Or the seduction of the dark demons from below?

Al-Qaeda-linked rebels attack Christian village in Syria

RT
September 5, 2013

An Al-Qaeda-linked group attacked a predominantly Christian village sympathetic to the Assad regime in western Syria on Wednesday while rebel and government forces clashed in Damascus.

The attack began at dawn when a Jabhat al-Nusra fighter blew himself up at a government checkpoint near the entrance to the  village of Maaloula, according to a Syrian official and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which collects information from anti-regime activists.

Maaloula – a mountain village of 2,000 residents 60km northeast of Damascus – is home to some of the most ancient Orthodox Christian relics and is a major pilgrimage destination. It’s also one of the very few places in the world where people still speak Aramaic, a biblical-era language Jesus is believed to have spoken.

Following the suicide bombing, al-Nusra rebels and government forces traded fire, with the rebels eventually seizing the checkpoint and taking over a hotel on a mountain overlooking the village, according the Observatory and a local nun.

Rebels also disabled two tanks and an armored personnel carrier and killed eight regime soldiers during the fighting.

From the mountaintop hotel, rebels fired shells into the village, forcing around 80 people to take refuge in a convent, the nun said.

A Syrian government official has confirmed the attack, AP reported.

Rebel mortar fire hit a sports hall in Damascus, killing Mohammed Ali Neimeh, a member of the national taekwondo team, state news agency SANA reported.

Government forces and rebels also fought in Daraya, located just outside Damascus, according to amateur video obtained by AP.

The ongoing fighting between various rebel forces – often with conflicting aims and loyalties – and Assad’s military unfolded Wednesday as the US came closer to authorizing military attacks on Syrian government entities in response to the alleged use of chemical weapons weeks ago.

A US Senate panel confirmed a resolution for force on Wednesday, which will see a vote from the full Senate soon. Meanwhile, the US House questioned key administration officials about the scope and strategy of any assault on Syrian forces.

A team of UN investigators is still analyzing samples taken near Damascus to confirm whether Western allegations that the Syrian government launched the attack are true.

Regardless, US President Barack Obama said Wednesday that he will not hesitate to use force in Syria even if Congress fails to lend its support.

“As commander in chief I always preserve the right and the responsibility to act on behalf of America’s national security. I don’t believe that I was required to take this to Congress. But I did not take this to Congress because I think it’s an empty exercise,”
Obama said during a news conference in Stockholm on Wednesday, after a meeting with the Swedish prime minister.

In a parliament debate, French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault called for intervention in Syria, saying that Assad had used chemical weapons and will do so again if not deterred by a Western-led force.
