Russia Suggests that the Kiev Government Will Start Ethnic "Cleansing" in Crimea

Putin"s spokesperson Dimitry Peskov has upped the rhetorical game by introducing a very charged subject into the debate over the Ukrainian region of Crimea. On Friday, Peskov predicted that "those who were behind the coup" would begin ethnic "cleansing" in Crimea. Although Peskov"s intention was to draw attention to the reasons Putin"s government believes Russia"s military needs to "protect" the region (which has a large population of ethnic Russians), there is actually a real concern among some about ethnic cleansing in the region amid the unrest. Just not for the reasons Peskov is implying.

During the Stalin-era Soviet Union, the bulk of Crimea"s population of Tatars were deported to Central Asia. Although the government claimed that the Tatars had collaborated with the Nazis as their excuse for removing the Sunni Muslim population from its home, there"s little evidence of that. In any case, when the Tatars were gone, ethnic Russians moved in to the towns and homes they once occupied, to resettle the peninsula as Russian. About half of the Tatar population died off in exile, until Mikhail Gorbachev allowed the population to once again set foot in Crimea decades later. The Tatars quickly began to repatriate their historical home. And now, Tatars are about 13 percent of the Crimean population, and they"re pro-Ukrainian. That"s caused a lot of tension.

And now that Russia has advanced into Crimea once more, some are worried that the Tatars will face increased intimidation. The New Yorker noticed that the doors of some Crimean Tatars have been marked with X"s in recent days, something that happened during the Stalin-era mass deportations:

When I walked up Chiisty Istochniki Street from the Memetovas’ house, I saw similar marks on four other houses, all of them residences of Crimean Tatars, Kadyrov said. The houses of their Russian neighbors, however, had not been touched. Similar markings have been reported in other parts of Bakhchysarai, and in some areas of the regional capital, Simferopol. Kadyrov told me that he called the police, who came out see his gate, but they refused to register a case. He was not surprised. “The police will not help us,” he said. “They told me Crimean Tatars are not a priority for them. Of course not—they are punishing us because we do not want Putin here.”

Yesterday, the Crimean parliament voted to support a merger between the Ukrainian region and Russia. The proposal, supported by the Russian government, will go before Crimean voters on March 16th. The Tatars are mostly opposed to that referendum.

The masters of modern spycraft have learned the science of predicting human behavior from the masters of marketing

If civil libertarians who are disappointed with the proposals Obama outlined last week had to write a wish list for what kind of restraints they’d like to see on National Security Agency data-gathering, what might that include? Here’s an educated guess:

Individual Control: The right to exercise control over what personal data organizations collect from them and how they use it.
Transparency: The right to easily understandable information about privacy and security practices.
Focused Collection: The right to reasonable limits on the personal data that organizations collect and retain.
Accountability: The right to have personal data handled by organizations with appropriate measures in place to assure they adhere to the Bill of Rights.

Nevermind that the Obama administration has endorsed all of those rights. Almost two years ago, actually. What’s more, they got Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and AOL to agree to observe them. The bad news: these rights apply only to web-browsing data gathered by companies that deploy “behavior-based marketing”. You know, the kind of tracking that means a search for “white wedding” will serve of ads for The Knot (even if you were looking for Billy Idol).

In February of 2012, the White House issued a white paper outlining a “Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights” that is arguably more comprehensive than the one that’s supposed to rein in government. It outlined the rights above and tasked the Federal Trade Commission with enforcing them; the first concrete action was to be the development of a “Do Not Track” standard, allowing consumers to simply shake their electronic tail. So, second piece of bad news: The Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights has been almost as ineffective at preventing data collection as the original.

In addition to everything else they know about us, the corporations that agreed to the Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights know that modern Americans feel significantly more discomfort about Big Shopping than they do about Big Brother. Even without a standardized “Do Not Track” feature, the percentage of internet users who opt out of tracking is growing rapidly. Among Firefox users, it went from around 4% at the time of the white paper to almost 12% a year later (14% among mobile users). Among all browsers, it’s about 8%. This may seem like a tiny percentage, but it’s enough of one that marketers are fighting every attempt to make opting out easier.

An astounding 71% of those polled say they are “very concerned” about “companies selling or sharing their information about them without their permission”. Imagine if those people knew there were, or are supposed to be, ways to prevent it.

Increasing awareness about marketers’ peeping and user attempts to escape it are probably why the consortium of “stakeholders” (media companies and privacy advocates) that was to come up with the “Do Not Track” standard actually voted to disband last fall. Marketers and developers would not give an inch, even on such seemingly simple issues as to where the “switch” to turn tracking off might be. Privacy advocates wanted it to exist as part of the browser installation, as much a part of the process as downloading the software itself. Developers and advertisers wanted it to be in the browser settings, next to the default homepage you probably haven’t changed.

When privacy advocates balked at that, a lawyer for the Digital Advertising Alliance soothed:

By putting it in a browser setting, you create a little bit of friction so that you make it simple enough for people who want to find it … But you don’t treat it as if it’s a matter of national security, because it’s not.

Of course, it is. Last month, the latest release of NSA documents showed that the agency uses exactly those cookies that “deliver and improve” our online experience to fish out individual users from the sea of data they collect and, further, to mark potential targets for “remote exploitation”.

This revelation obviously highlights the irony of the Obama administration’s agitation for consumer privacy; it should draw attention to a larger if more subtle issue as well: the synchronicity between how marketers think of us and how the government does.

Obama’s speech Friday repeatedly emphasized that the data the government collects is “bulk”. That probably goes over better than saying “mass”. “Mass” means you are swept up with everyone else; “bulk” implies your files are tossed haphazardly in a drawer. The way the program is supposed to work, he explained, is that we just have this huge file lying around and then, when the government finds out about a specific threat, and then they look at it.

Citizens are supposed to be comforted that the data is some huge impersonal block of numbers. It’s not data, it’s metadata! But the problem with mass data collection isn’t that those who have it can find out about any one individual’s private life, it’s that if you have enough data, you don’t have to find out about any one individual’s life.

Marketers have learned that more quickly than the government. Foot-dragging about “Do Not Track” aside, commercial interests don’t want to know about you, they want to know about people like you. One of the largest purveyors of consumer intelligence, BlueKai, has privacy protections that sound a lot like what Obama outlined Friday: they put a time limit on how long they track users and they keep all profiles anonymous (bulk!); they also limit the data available in the profiles (no financial data, no healthcare data, nothing about sex or religion). It is a form of metadata.

Their information is still incredibly valuable, because the data they collect and distribute isn’t intended to track a single person; it’s intended to help marketers find a group of people who can be coaxed into sharing a single interest – their product.

Massive amounts of data about millions of people allows commercial interests to sort users into categories, and then marketers can tailor that category’s online experience to push its members as firmly as possible in the direction of its product. No one’s privacy has been violated in the sense of having a secret revealed; it’s almost the opposite, and it’s almost worse: we’re being manipulated in a way that makes us less individual, less unique, less capable of having secrets to begin with.

The masters of modern spycraft have learned from the masters of marketing the science of predicting human behavior. One of the main reasons for “bulk” collection, one that seems less alarming on its surface, is to watch for patterns of behavior that indicate possible terrorist activity. But when an organization is sufficiently skilled at predicting human behavior, the next phase, almost inevitably, is to try to influence it.

We need to update our vision of what an Orwellian use of bulk data might be. We probably don’t have to worry about federal agents knocking down doors in the middle of the night. Tyranny can be a lot more insidious than that. It can be the limitation of options, the curbing of ambitions, or the gentle nudging forward down a path you thought you choose.

47% Of All Jobs Will Be Automated By 2034, And ‘No Government Is Prepared’ Says Economist

Almost half of all jobs could be automated by computers within two decades and “no government is prepared” for the tsunami of social change that will follow, according to the Economist.

The magazine’s 2014 analysis of the impact of technology paints a pretty bleak picture of the future.

It says that while innovation (aka “the elixir of progress”) has always resulted in job losses, usually economies have eventually been able to develop new roles for those workers to compensate, such as in the industrial revolution of the 19th century, or the food production revolution of the 20th century.

But the pace of change this time around appears to be unprecedented, its leader column claims. And the result is a huge amount of uncertainty for both developed and under-developed economies about where the next ‘lost generation’ is going to find work.

Full story here.

As radiation levels spike and mutated wildlife washes ashore, government and media promote delusion.

Government, Media Cover Up Fukushima Radiation Wave Hitting US fukushima wave us

Radiation hot spots are popping up around the United States thousands of percentages higher than ‘background radiation’, mutated wildlife is being found dead on the same West Coast beaches where increased radiation levels have been documented by independent researchers and the Fukushima TEPCO plant workers have been caught using duct tape to fix their nuclear equipment. But according to both the Japanese and United States governments, these events mean absolutely nothing.

In fact, you must be a conspiracy theorist if you fail to believe the official story that it was likely red-painted utensils that led to a spike in documented radiation levels along the California coast (yes, the government actually offered this up as an official answer). And you must absolutely be a conspiracy theorist if you have the gull to actually look back to late 2011, when researchers presented their findings regarding the impending wave of Fukushima radiation that was already being recorded within the country.

Information going back to 2011 shows that scientists were already concerned about an increase in radiation levels and the overall fallout from the delapidated Fukushima plant. We can even go back to the declaration by scientist Marco Kaltofen of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute that radioactive ‘hot particles’ had been found at 2 out of the 3 radiation monitoring stations in Boston. As you are likely aware, hot particles are microscopic pieces of radioactive material that can absolutely wreak havoc on your body via the deliverance of concentrated radiation.

And these particles, according to Kaltofen, were already being found in Boston as far back as 2011.

Now enter a new flurry of stories that have seemingly been popping up one after another as radiation levels are continually being monitored around the nation — namely the West Coast, where the bulk of Fukushima-linked scenarios have been documented. In what sounds like an apocalyptic plot for the latest thriller film, we have mutated whales now washing up dead on the West Coast in the first ever documented case of conjoined gray whale calves. We even have elevated radiation readings as far away as St. Louis, Missouri.

  • A d v e r t i s e m e n t

Coincidentily, of course, this is happening at the same time that radiation hot spots exceeding a 1,400% increase over ‘normal’ levels are being reported by researchers. It’s even happening at the same time that similar 500% increases have been disregarded by government officials who admit they have no idea what’s going on but fervently deny any connection to Fukushima in any capacity whatsoever. In fact, that has always been the mantra of these government health officials: We have no idea what’s really going on, but it’s definitely not Fukushima!

Because just as the Japanese government has assured its citizens that Fukushima is perfectly safe and poses no real threat to your health while secretly reviewing studies that reveal the plant released massively more radiation than admitted and led to 78% of the radioactive waste being dumped into the Pacific Ocean, the United States government would much rather silently purchase 14 million doses of potassium iodide than tell you that there may be some cause for concern.

The very core of the Fukushima disaster timeline that has been regurgitated by the mainstream media and government agencies alike was almost exclusively based on information provided by plant operator TEPCO — a company that is now on record as having lied to the population of the world in a major way. And there were no signs they would ever tell the truth unless forced to. It wasn’t until an independent investigation revealed the actual levels of radiation released from the plant (around 2 1/2 times more than TEPCO would even admit) that TEPCO was forced to go on record and state that the radiation levels they released were indeed much lower than reality.

However, the independent investigation into Fukushima radiation levels not only exposed the lies by TEPCO regarding the radiation explosion at the plant, but it also found that around 78% of the caesium-137 released by the plant was funneling into the Pacific Ocean. The plant now states that the three reactor meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi plant released about 900,000 terabecquerels of radioactive substances. About 20% fell on Japanese land, 2% somewhere on land outside the country, and a whopping 78% remainder is believed to have entered the Pacific Ocean.

At the very least, the Japanese and United States governments should be preparing citizens for what scientists said could last ‘thousands of years’: the Fukushima nightmare. And that begins with admitting that the threat is real. Because unless we really prepare ourselves and work together as a planet to truly fix the Fukushima plant and ensure that the 1,4000+ rods do not cause yet another massive meltdown (as experts say they likely will during transfer), we really will be facing a radioactive nightmare of epic proportions.

Money and Government, Freedom and Prosperity: The Federal Dollar Hangs in the Balance

Money and Government, Freedom and Prosperity: The Federal Dollar Hangs in the Balance
http://watchdogwire.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_1316.jpg

“Was the Fed a good idea?”

That was the theme of the Cato Institute’s 31st annual monetary conference, which brought together financial scholars and policy makers to consider the record of the Federal Reserve since its establishment in 1913.

The focus of this year’s theme was highlighted by Jerry Gordon, former President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.

“The central bank has now been dominated by people that believe inflation occurs as a result of too-low unemployment rate, and is not a risk as unemployment is above some threshold,” Gordon said. “The monetary policymakers will not give greater weight to inflation until too many mommies and daddies are working, earning a paycheck and supporting their families.”

IMG_1316

Keynote speaker Charles Plosser, President and CEO of the Philadelphia Fed, discussed the limits that are should be placed on the Fed to ensure accountability. According to Plosser, there are four key, necessary limits:

  1. Limiting the Fed’s monetary policy to a narrow mandate with price stability as the primary objective.

  2. Limiting the types of assets the Fed can hold on its balance sheet.

  3. Limiting the Fed’s discretion in policymaking by requiring a systematic, rule-based approach.

  4. Limit the boundaries of its lender of last resort function.

The gold standard was also discussed at the conference. Lewis Lehrman, Chairman of the Lehrman Institute and one of the key members of President Ronald Reagan’s US Gold Commission, argued for a return to the gold standard, calling our time “an unparalleled era of financial disorder.”

IMG_1324

In opposition to the gold standard, George Mason University economics professor Lawrence White argued that our current system is superior.

“I find that most automatic and least managed kinds of gold-based system with free banking can be expected to outperform a gold standard with central banking and to outperform the fiat in monetary systems that currently prevail,” White said.

The conference would not have been complete without discussion about our current economic situation. The financial crisis and Great Recession greatly increased the power of the Federal Reserve. Government has expanded dramatically under both Presidents Bush and Obama. One conference participant addressed this problem.

“Politicians and judges have devalued the Constitution’s founding principles-federalism, separation of powers, limited government, and individual liberty,” he said.

Steve Forbes of Forbes magazine stated, “The only way to increase prosperity is through innovation and productivity. Attempts to manipulate the value of money invariably fail.”

Televangelist Asks God For Military Takeover Of The U.S. Government

I know the adage goes “let him who is without sin, cast the first stone,” but some people deserve to be written a ticket to damnation…with the greatest sin being utter stupidity. Meet televangelist Rick Joyner (pictured), who recently made headlines for openly praying to God for a military takeover of the U.S. government. While appearing on ”Prophetic Perspective on Current Events,” Joyner claimed that democracy in America has failed and that the nation might not last even to the end of President Barack Obama‘s term.

SEE ALSO: Treasury Secretary: Federal Default Would Have ‘Irrevocable Damage’ To Financial Markets, Americans

Why not?

Well, according to Rev. Crazy Town, America is teetering toward tyranny. You know, that rascally Black in the White House won’t let go of power because he’s like Hitler or something.

Enter Joyner’s prayer, which pleads to God to save us — or well, those who look like him –  from dark ”forces” that are “at work right now to undermine and destroy the republic.”  If you let him tell it, ”our only hope is a military takeover; martial law.”

I’ve wasted God’s time praying for many a silly thing. Say, that one day Beyoncé  and I will sit in a hotel suite, eat Popeye’s, and sip wealthy people’s liquor as we discuss her starring in a movie of my creation. I imagine God gives me a side-eye whenever this prayer enters the universe, but thanks to Joyner, I now realize there are far more annoying heathens.

What exactly is going on that is so terrible in Washington that you pray to God for a government takeover? A health care plan that looks like one drafted by Republicans more than a decade ago?

RELATED: Need Health Insurance? Here’s How You Can Get Affordable Coverage Starting Oct. 1

I mean, I could see forming a prayer circle to send Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) to the Spike Channel and out of the Senate, but other than that, I’m a bit lost.

The initial clip was taken down from YouTube, but things on the Internet never truly go away. So Joyner was forced to address his controversial statements, “I did not plan for that program to be aired just as a government shutdown began.” Still, he claims, America is now sailing deeper and deeper in to these most-treacherous seas. “Also, after his prayers are answered, “Not only will our Republic be restored, but even more importantly, America will turn back to the Lord and fulfill our destiny and purpose.”

Exploiting indigenous people and African slaves in the name of greed and power? Can Rick Joyner get an amen? No? Okay, let’s move on.

Joyner ended the statement by repeating the declaration that caused all of the drama to begin with:

That being said, without a soon and very radical turn back to what we were called to be as a nation, we are going to pass through a time of martial law in America. The crucial issue is who the martial [sic] is going to be. This could be a very difficult time, much darker than we can probably imagine, or it could be a time when peace and stability is restored, and the Republic is restored to its Constitutional moorings. That choice is up to Americans.

As much as I’d love to dismiss the likes of Rick Joyner as some kooky, overly religious, fringe element of the Christian right, the reality is there are plenty of people in the Republican Party who share the fears that President Obama won’t let go of power. In fact, they are the majority.

From an October 2013 Public Policy Polling report:

One in four Americans say that President Obama is secretly trying to figure out a way to stay in office beyond 2017 – including almost half of Republicans (44 percent). And 26 percent of Americans think that Muslims are covertly implementing Sharia Law in American court systems, while 55 percent don’t think so and another 19 percent aren’t sure. There’s a huge partisan breakdown on this one as well – 42 percent of Republicans fear Sharia Law making its way into America’s courts while just 12 percent of Democrats agree.

Looks like I’ll be praying for the nation too.

Dollar weakens as U.S. government shuts down

Agence France-Presse
Oct. 1, 2013

The dollar fell in Asia on Tuesday as the United States lurched into its first government shutdown in 17 years due to a budget standoff.

The greenback bought 98.16 yen in Tokyo afternoon trade after U.S. lawmakers missed a midnight deadline to avert the shutdown, down from highs of around 98.70 in morning trade and 98.21 yen in New York on Monday afternoon.

The US government shutdown early Tuesday triggered agency closures and hundreds of thousands of furloughs as Congress missed a deadline to pass a budget.
