Healthier U.S. consumers bode well for retail stocks: Barron"s

NEW YORK Sun Nov 24, 2013 12:57pm EST

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Optimism about a strong holiday sales season in the United States led Barron’s to tout nine retail store stocks in its November 25 edition.

Although there are six fewer shopping days between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year and the S&P Retail Select Industry index is up 42 percent year to date, retail store trade group NRF forecast that sales this year should rise 3.9 percent over last year.

That led reporter Jacqueline Doherty to write that “good shoppers can always find bargains” in the stock market.

Barron’s list of potential winners are: Bed Bath & Beyond Inc (BBBY.O), Home Depot Inc (HD.N), Macy’s Inc (M.N), Coach Inc (COH.N), Chico’s FAS Inc (CHS.N), Urban Outfitters Inc (URBN.O), Dollar General Corp (DG.N), Dillards Inc (DDS.N) and Kohl’s Corp (KSS.N).

The paper said the particularly dramatic rise in the stock price and price-to-earnings ratios of Restoration Hardware Holdings Inc (RH.N) and Michael Kors Holding Ltd (KORS.N) suggest “limited” future advances in those stocks.

HILO, HAWAII (INTELLIHUB) — Protestors took their voices and signs to the streets Friday, to expose the “Wall Street billionaires agenda” and the privatization of certain government functions, including the “Veterans Administration” and “education”.

The group Malu ‘Aina Center for Non-Violent Education & Action organized the event which took place at the downtown Post Office. The group passed out  flyers to passersby reading, “Stand Up & Protest! Solidarity of the 99%”.

The group speculates that the real agenda behind the government shutdown and “possible default” is to “cut Social Security, Medicare, crush wages, gut environmental regulations and privatize as much as possible.”

Fire breaks out on evacuated Gulf gas well

(AP) — An out-of-control natural gas well off the Louisiana coast caught fire late Tuesday, hours after 44 workers were safely evacuated from the drilling rig following a mid-morning blowout, a federal agency confirmed.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire, Eileen Angelico, a spokeswoman for the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, told The Associated Press.

She said it wasn’t known what caused the gas to ignite. It also wasn’t clear early Wednesday how and when crews would attempt to extinguish the blaze. BSEE said earlier Tuesday that a firefighting vessel with water and foam capabilities had been dispatched to the scene.

Wild Well Control Inc. was hired to try to bring the well under control. Angelico said Wild Well personnel approached the well earlier Tuesday night, before the fire, but they determined it was unsafe to get closer when they were about 200 feet away from it.

The gas blowout was reported Tuesday morning.

The Coast Guard kept nautical traffic out of an area within 500 meters of the site throughout the day. The Federal Aviation Administration restricted aircraft up to 2,000 feet above the area.

BSEE said inspectors flying over the site soon after the blowout saw a light sheen covering an area about a half-mile by 50 feet. However, it was dissipating quickly.

Earlier this month, a gas well off the Louisiana coast flowed for several days before being sealed.

Officials stressed that Tuesday’s blowout wouldn’t be close to as damaging as the BP oil spill of 2010, in which an oil rig, the Deepwater Horizon, exploded off the Louisiana coast, killing 11 workers and eventually spewing millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf. It was the worst offshore environmental disaster in U.S. history.

Chris Roberts, a member of the Jefferson Parish Council in south Louisiana, said the travel restrictions might pose an inconvenience for participants in an upcoming deep sea fishing tournament.

“It could change some plans as to where some people plan to fish,” he said.

Tuesday’s blowout occurred near an unmanned offshore gas platform that was not currently producing natural gas, said Angelico. The workers were aboard a portable drilling rig known as a jackup rig, owned by Hercules Offshore Inc., which was a contractor for exploration and production company Walter Oil & Gas Corp.

Walter Oil & Gas reported to the BSEE that the rig was completing a “sidetrack well” — a means of re-entering the original well bore, Angelico said.

The purpose of the sidetrack well in this instance was not immediately clear. A spokesman for the corporation didn’t have the information Tuesday night. Industry websites say sidetrack wells are sometimes drilled to remedy a problem with the existing well bore.

“It’s a way to overcome an engineering problem with the original well,” Ken Medlock, an energy expert at Rice University’s Baker Institute said. “They’re not drilled all the time, but it’s not new.”

Pelosi On Immigration Reform: We"ll Save Hardball For Later

Whether there’s an immigration reform bill or not depends to a large degree on how House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) chooses to run the House. But if there is going to be an immigration reform bill, it won’t be Boehner’s show alone.

As Boehner effectively acknowledged Thursday, passing legislation that could conceivably become consensus comprehensive immigration reform will require both Democratic and Republican votes. And that means Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) will have tremendous sway over what the House produces.

But for now Pelosi’s being cautious with that power. Though she’s urged Republicans to pass a single, bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform bill, and to move with deliberate haste, she’s stopped short of nixing the process the GOP has chosen to move immigration legislation and is even tolerant of the rhetorical games Republicans are playing as they try to cobble together a majority for provisions dealing with the 11 million immigrants currently in the country illegally.

And she won’t go anywhere close — yet — to introducing what’s known as a “discharge petition” — which, with 218 signatures, would force a House vote on the Senate’s comprehensive bill.

“I fully subscribe to the idea that we should have a House bill … we shouldn’t have to just accept the Senate bill,” Pelosi told TPM in a wide-ranging interview Wednesday. “However, there is a Senate bill. And that gives leverage to those who say ‘now pass something in the House. Pass something and go to conference.’ If you don’t, there will be strong public sentiment, to take up, give us a vote, on the Senate bill.”

If we reach that point in the weeks and months ahead, Pelosi will probably step up the pressure and take procedural steps to secure — or attempt to secure — a vote on the Senate bill. But we’re not there yet. There’s political value in allowing the GOP to try to sort this out among themselves. Furthermore, skipping steps and going straight to hardball probably diminishes the chances her actions would be successful. And so Pelosi won’t even entertain hypothetical scenarios about the consequences if the House GOP can’t ultimately pass anything.

“I’m more optimistic than you are about this,” she added. “I really do believe that we shouldn’t be saying if you don’t do this we’re going to be doing that.”

But she does acknowledge that Boehner will run into problems moving piecemeal immigration bills if he adheres to the criterion that immigration reform legislation must have the support of more than half of his conference.

“I don’t even know if they can pass those on the floor though,” Pelosi added. “I don’t even know if they can pass those bills though. So at some point they’re going to have to have a bipartisan vote on whatever they send forward.”

Pelosi is similarly sanguine about a different congressional imperative — replacing Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act, which the Supreme Court struck down last month.

“We had meetings immediately after the Supreme Court decision,” she said. “People have been tasked to do different things in a bipartisan way. The Judiciary Committee will have a hearing next week. … It’s about timing. We really have to do it this year. We can have hearings. We can do this, we can do that. But it should be done in a way that accomplishes all of it this year, because you see states are already using this interim period to make mischief.”

You’d think that urgency might prompt her to tout the procedural and messaging power of a discharge petition. But as with immigration reform, there are political reasons to let the GOP try to get its act together on its own first.

“[Voting Rights Act reauthorization] was very strongly bipartisan,” Pelosi said. “So it wasn’t as if it eked its way through and now they’re going to get even. It was very bipartisan. We believe it will continue to be.”
