Condoleezza Rice Backs Sullivan in Alaska Senate Race

Condoleezza Rice has joined the midterm election fray, backing a former State Department colleague running for the U.S. Senate in Alaska. In a video sponsored by the influential conservative super PAC American Crossroads, Rice touts the credentials of Republican Dan Sullivan.

“Dan Sullivan is tireless in service for his country,” the former secretary of state says in the 32-second TV spot.

Sullivan served as Alaska’s attorney general under Govs. Sarah Palin and Sean Parnell. Prior to that, he was assistant secretary of state for economic and business affairs during part of Rice’s tenure heading the nation’s diplomatic arm.

The video—a $ 180,000 ad buy, according to American Crossroads—features Rice defending the GOP challenger against recent attacks against him by Put Alaska First, a PAC supporting the incumbent, Democratic Sen. Mark Begich.

One attack ad, titled “Sullivan’s Real Home,” charges the candidate with being insufficiently Alaskan for having been born and raised in Ohio and  for owning a million-dollar home in a “swanky D.C. suburb” while claiming voter residency in the 49th state.

In response, Rice says Sullivan “faces political attacks because he wanted his family by his side,” adding, “Remember that serving our country required some time in our capital. Dan will be a great senator because he loves and cares for the state of Alaska and because he’s a great family man.”

Sullivan is vying with Alaska Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell for the GOP nomination. A new Rasmussen poll shows Sullivan and Begich tied in a hypothetical matchup, and Treadwell leading the incumbent by four percentage points.

Though Rice has campaigned for candidates in the past—most prominently for 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney—this is apparently the first time the Stanford professor has done so in a television ad.

It is a reunion of sorts for Rice and another former Bush administration official: American Crossroads’ co-founder Karl Rove was a senior adviser to the president.

Club for Growth Backs Sullivan in Alaska Race

Club for Growth is backing Dan Sullivan in the marquee Alaska Senate race, giving the Republican a boost in a three-way primary to challenge incumbent Democrat Mark Begich.

The endorsement marks one of the few times this cycle that the conservative group has rallied behind an establishment favorite. While the National Republican Senatorial Committee doesn’t officially get involved in primaries where no GOP incumbent is running, some senior members have helped Sullivan raise money.

The endorsee was most recently the commissioner of the Alaska Department of Natural Resources and is competing against Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell and Joe Miller, the 2010 Tea Party favorite who won the GOP nomination (and a Club for Growth endorsement) that year but lost the general election to incumbent Republican Lisa Murkowski, who ran as a write-in candidate. Sullivan also served in the State Department during the George W. Bush administration and later as Alaska attorney general.

While polling in the 49th state is often scattered and unreliable, Sullivan does appear to be leading the GOP pack among voters and in fundraising.

In picking Sullivan this cycle, Club President Chris Chocola called him a “fiscal conservative with a stellar track record in Alaska,” someone who “has fought for pro-growth tax reform, taken on ObamaCare in court, and beaten back federal overreach by Obama’s EPA.”

Begich is considered one of the most vulnerable incumbents this cycle, and the race could help determine the balance of power in the Senate. The Democrat is well-poised financially, however, ending last year with $ 2.8 million in his account.

“Just replacing Mark Begich with another Republican is not enough — the next Republican Senate majority must consist of the right kind of Republicans — Senators like Pat Toomey, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Tim Scott, Mike Lee, Tom Coburn, and Rand Paul,” Chocola said in a statement. “Chris McDaniel, Ben Sasse, Tom Cotton, and now Dan Sullivan in Alaska are the next generation of candidates needed to ensure not only a Republican Senate majority, but also a fiscally conservative majority within that majority.”

In several primary races this cycle, Club for Growth is at odds with the GOP’s official campaign arm, creating what the establishment wing sees as unnecessary interference in winnable races. For example, the Club has sponsored Republican attorney Bryan Smith in his challenge to incumbent Mike Simpson, a conservative Idaho congressman. The group also endorsed Mississippi state Sen. Chris McDaniel in his challenge to longtime Sen. Thad Cochran.

But the Club has also been an early backer of Arkansas Rep. Tom Cotton, the establishment’s choice to challenge Democratic Sen. Mark Pryor. The group endorsed Cotton’s House bid in 2012, serving as a key financial resource in the congressman’s first campaign.

Anchorage, Alaska- They do things different up in Alaska.

Some days are saturated with sunshine while others are nothing but night. The only thing that you can count on, besides the people, is the cold. But that doesn’t mean you shut things down. You still go to work, take the kids to school, hit the grocery store and hunt. Which is why an NRA Women on Target clinic is the perfect fit for the 49th state.

“Larry Boyle and Alexandra Brown do a great job up there in Anchorage,” said NRA’s Women on Target Instructional Shooting Clinic Coordinator Diane Danielson. “They even add an extra Alaskan element to a few of the clinics they hold there every year.”

Women On Target®Instructional Shooting Clinics were created to provide more opportunities for females to learn about shooting. How to handle a firearm safely, where to store it, how to shoot it and more. So what are the extra Alaskan elements that Larry and Alexandra provide?

“In addition to basic rifle and pistol, they also offer clinics in big game rifle and bear safety.”

How do they do that? With a little ingenuity, that’s how.

“They attach a lifesize picture of a bear to a target. The target is then attached to a sled which has been attached to an ATV. At go, the ATV takes off … simulating a charge. The shooter takes aim and fires until the target passes.”

While this can’t truly simulate a charge, the adrenaline rush and whatnot, it’s about as close as you’re going to get. And if you ever come across Yogi and Bubu in the wild, you’ll be glad you had at least a little bit of training.

NTSB: 10 Killed in Alaska Plane Crash

Authorities say an air taxi has crashed at the Soldotna Airport in Alaska, killing all 10 people on board.

National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigator Clint Johnson says the pilot and nine passengers were killed in the crash at the airport late Sunday morning.

Meagan Peters of Alaska State Troopers says the fixed-wing aircraft was fully engulfed in flames before firefighters could get to the plane. The victims have not yet been identified.

The accident happened around 11:20 a.m. Johnson said initial reports had the accident happening as the plane took off.

The NTSB identified the aircraft in a release Sunday as a de Havilland Otter Air Taxi. The NTSB is sending a team to investigate the crash.
