Bear Scare As Couple Attacked Outside Home

A Scottish couple have had a brush with a bear after walking past it on the doorstep of their holiday home without even realising it was there.

CCTV footage shows Bob and Irene McKeown locking up their Californian holiday home as the creature lurks just metres from their front door.

The oblivious couple then walk towards their car, followed by the curious cub – and only realise the animal is there when it lurches towards them.

Mr McKeown said he suffered “a couple of scratches and a wee bit of bruising” after his encounter with the bear, which is believed to have been searching for food in Pasadena, near Los Angeles National Forest.

The animal, which neighbours said is a regular sight in the neighbourhood on days when rubbish is due to be collected, is not currently a risk to public safety, according to game warden Charlie Healy.

“It’s just a bear knocking through a neighbourhood,” he said. “We’re just going to let the problem fix itself.”

Preparing for bear, moose and caribou at NRA Women on Target event in Alaska

Lining up a rifle shot during a Women on Target event in Alaska.

Anchorage, Alaska- They do things different up in Alaska.

Some days are saturated with sunshine while others are nothing but night. The only thing that you can count on, besides the people, is the cold. But that doesn’t mean you shut things down. You still go to work, take the kids to school, hit the grocery store and hunt. Which is why an NRA Women on Target clinic is the perfect fit for the 49th state.

NRA Women on Target event during the pistol phase in Alaska

“Larry Boyle and Alexandra Brown do a great job up there in Anchorage,” said NRA’s Women on Target Instructional Shooting Clinic Coordinator Diane Danielson. “They even add an extra Alaskan element to a few of the clinics they hold there every year.”

Women On Target®Instructional Shooting Clinics were created to provide more opportunities for females to learn about shooting. How to handle a firearm safely, where to store it, how to shoot it and more. So what are the extra Alaskan elements that Larry and Alexandra provide?

Alaskan Women on Target participant stands by her caribou target

“In addition to basic rifle and pistol, they also offer clinics in big game rifle and bear safety.”

How do they do that? With a little ingenuity, that’s how.

“They attach a lifesize picture of a bear to a target. The target is then attached to a sled which has been attached to an ATV. At go, the ATV takes off … simulating a charge. The shooter takes aim and fires until the target passes.”

While this can’t truly simulate a charge, the adrenaline rush and whatnot, it’s about as close as you’re going to get. And if you ever come across Yogi and Bubu in the wild, you’ll be glad you had at least a little bit of training.

Just another added extra for your NRA Women on Target clinics … Alaskan style.

Suggests 2nd Amendment may not apply to individuals, despite Supreme Court ruling

According to the U.S. Senate, the individual right to keep and bear arms under the Second Amendment is debatable.

US Senate Says Right to Keep & Bear Arms is Debatable 151013gun

A Senate.gov guide to the Constitution contains an “explanation” next to every section and amendment of America’s founding document.

The Second Amendment guarantees, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

However, according to the Senate website, “Whether this provision protects the individual’s right to own firearms or whether it deals only with the collective right of the people to arm and maintain a militia has long been debated.”

The “explanation” makes no mention of a 2008 Supreme Court ruling (District of Columbia v. Heller), which affirmed that the Second Amendment protects the individual right to own guns.

A separate Supreme Court ruling in 2010 confirmed that the Second Amendment right for an individual to keep and bear arms applied to both state and local gun control laws.

As Ali Papademetriou highlights, schools are also erroneously using the Senate’s interpretation of the Second Amendment to suggest that the right for Americans to own firearms is restricted to state militias.

American History students at Denton Guyer High School in Texas are being taught that, “The people have a right to keep and bear arms in a state militia,” under the Second Amendment, implying that there is no individual right to own guns.

The First Amendment is also summarized as meaning only that, “Congress may not favor one religion over another.”

Many Americans would be concerned to realize that the very body concerned with upholding and protecting their rights under the mandate of the Constitution – the U.S. Senate – refuses to fully acknowledge the fundamental right to keep and bear arms under the Second Amendment.

Grizzly Bear Survival: Yet Another Reason Not To Shoot Yellowstone Wolves

Pro-wolf-shooting activists should check out this study to see just how beneficial wolves are to the Yellowstone ecosystem–and the survival of one of its most iconic animals.

Even though every respectable regulatory service says shooting wolves in and around Yellowstone National Park is bad for everyone involved, wolves are still being shot. Well, add one more paper to the pile: a new study published in the Journal of Animal Ecology finds that the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone has had a positive effect on the population of…wait, what? Grizzly bears? How?

Putting together the puzzle pieces of a diverse ecosystem like Yellowstone is tricky; shooting wolves is like pulling out a piece of an enormous Jenga game. Some parts seem unaffected, some parts are distinctly less balanced, and eventually the whole game will crash. This study looks at how the wolf affects the ecosystem as a whole, and, as we thought, wolves are an essential part of the health of Yellowstone.

The iconic, endangered-in-the-U.S. grizzly bear relies on lots of fruit, especially berries, when preparing for its winter hibernation. High in sugar and containing lots of important vitamins, the berries, including serviceberry, chokecherry, buffaloberry, twinberry, huckleberry, and others, and make up a substantial portion of the grizzly’s diet in the summertime. A lower amount of berries has been found to have a negative effect on the survival and reproductive abilities of grizzlies the following year.

There have been quite a few low-berry years lately. That problem, says the study, can be attributed to the lack of wolves in Yellowstone: wolves typically prey on the abundant elk herds in the park. Elk eat berries, just like the bears do. But without wolves, the elk population has exploded, which means there’s hardly any berries left for the bears. So the bears aren’t as well fed, which makes them less healthy.

And it’s not even just as simple as that. The elk are eating so many berries, including the entire berry shrubs, that animals that rely on the shrubs, like bees and butterflies, are also in decline. The bears, without access to the fruit they’d normally be eating, have to eat more meat, which means they sometimes prey on elk, but just as often on livestock nearby. And that makes the ranchers angry, and the ranchers shoot bears or wolves or whatever else they feel like, because Wyoming does not know or care how ecosystems work. (Neither does Friends of the Yellowstone Elk Herd, a pro-hunting organization.)

But the reintroduction of wolves, the study finds, has had a marked improvement on that entire system. The researchers, from Oregon State University and Washington State University, analyzed grizzly bear scat and found that the percentage of berries in the scat has doubled since the reintroduction of the wolves. Turns out the two most iconic animals of Yellowstone depend on each other in more ways than we thought.
