VIDEO: General: U.S. Afghan Focus Will Be "Very Different" After 2014

Americans weary of the war in Afghanistan should understand that any U.S. presence there after this year “will not be one where we will be putting our men and women directly into harm’s way,” the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said Wednesday. Gen. Martin Dempsey told NBC News that Afghanistan “will remain a dangerous place for some time to come,” but he said the American mission there after 2014 will be more about training and helping the Afghan military at high levels, not patrol or combat.

VIDEO: Panama Canal Expansion Work To Resume After Deal With Consortium

Work on the multibillion-dollar Panama Canal expansion was set to restart on Thursday after a partial agreement between the canal authorities and a Spanish-led consortium, raising hopes for the program after a two-week hiatus due to a row over costs. An agreement announced late on Wednesday allows work to restart while the two sides continue talks on how the project is financed through to completion, a process which they have given themselves 72 hours to complete. The dispute between the GUPC consortium led by Spanish builder Sacyr and the Panama Canal Authority had threatened delays that could cost Panama millions of dollars in lost shipping tolls, as well as being a setback for companies worldwide that want to move larger ships through the waterway that links the U.S. Gulf Coast to Asian markets.

VIDEO: U.S. Stocks Correction Fear Fades Despite Valuation Angst

A rapid recovery in U.S. stock prices after the recent slide may be enough to make many investors who remained bullish feel a little smug. Investors should instead take the emerging markets scare that drove stocks down about 6 percent at the end of January as a warning of more risks to come. Cantor Fitzgerald, for one, said it was considering new hedges at these levels. With few obvious justifications for stocks climbing further, investors are left in the position they were in at the beginning of the year: unsure about the economy and earnings, but facing an environment where few other assets offer the same potential return as the equity market.

VIDEO: Napolitano: Obama No-show Not A Snub Of Putin

The head of the U.S. delegation to the games says President Obama’s decision not to attend the Winter Olympics in Sochi is not a snub of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Janet Napolitano, the former secretary of homeland security, noted in a CNN interview that Obama has not attended any Olympics since taking office in early 2009. Napolitano said on CNN’s State of the Union, “I think the president chose a delegation that represent leaders from various walks of life.” That delegation includes gay members, a move largely seen as a critical comment on anti-gay laws in Russia.

VIDEO: Kerry Defends Nuclear Pact With Iran

Secretary of State John Kerry offered a robust defense of the interim nuclear agreement with Iran on Sunday, rejecting comparisons to North Korea and insisting that the deal would make Israel and Persian Gulf allies of the United States more secure, not less so. “From this day, for the next six months, Israel is in fact safer than it was,” Mr. Kerry said on the CNN program “State of the Union.” “We’re now going to expand the time by which they can break out, rather than narrow it.”

VIDEO: Chris Pratt Was An Amateur Stripper At Age 18

Before Chris Pratt became one of the most ubiquitous TV and movie stars, he earned a living as an amateur stripper. “I was always a very much naked person,” says Pratt. I don’t know how it got around to them, but my friend paid me $40 to dance at his grandmother’s birthday party,” he recalls. Pratt had packed on 60 pounds for his role in “Delivery Man” -a far cry from his days as a stripper. I felt terrible. “I’ve always been just teetering on that scale and I’ve been bigger for different roles.
