Alexander challenger: "We"re friends"

On paper, George Flinn is Sen. Lamar Alexander’s worst nightmare: A mega-rich self-funder willing to dump a huge amount of cash into the Tennessee Republican primary.

In reality, Flinn is all about a single issue: Health care.

Flinn, a Memphis radiologist and radio magnate, filed papers this week to run in the crowded primary against Alexander, the two-term senator, former Education secretary and ex-governor of Tennessee. Flinn, who ran for the House in 2010 and 2012, spent roughly $ 5 million of his own in those unsuccessful bids for Congress.

This time against Alexander, Flinn is once again ready to pour big bucks in the Republican Senate primary — but not to attack Alexander. In fact, he said: “I like him, we’re friends.”

“I’m not running against him,” Flinn said in an interview. “I’m running for this plan.”

Flinn may spend millions promoting what he dubs the Patient Centered Health Plan that would overhaul the current health care system to implement a more free-market approach. Flinn said he hadn’t decided how much he’d be willing to spend of his own cash, but added: “I’m going to do whatever it takes to get this message out.”

But Flinn vowed that he wouldn’t attack Alexander in his sustained ad buys and would instead run a “very positive campaign.”

Such words may be a relief to Alexander given that Flinn’s networth is estimated to be between $ 30 million and $ 104 million, according to financial disclosure records.

Indeed, Alexander appears likely to skate to reelection in November despite amassing a bipartisan record in the Senate that tea party activists have seized upon. Even though his politics are conservative-leaning, Alexander has burnished a reputation for working with Democrats and has backed controversial measures and nominations, including Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court in 2009, the 2008 Wall Street bailout and the 2013 immigration bill.

But tea party forces have been unable to mobilize against him. Eight candidates filed against Alexander ahead of Thursday’s filing deadline, though it’s unclear how many will ultimately end up on the ballot for the August primary. State Rep. Joe Carr has been in the race against Alexander for months after dropping a bid for the House, but he has yet to gain traction in the polls or in fundraising.

The challenges that tea party groups are having in Tennessee are emblematic of their struggles nationwide. Even though a number of GOP incumbents are facing primary challenges in conservative states like South Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee, they seem likely to easily survive in the intraparty contests.

Sen. John Cornyn, the Texas Republican, skated to victory over a tea party challenger in his primary last month. Sen. Pat Roberts in Kansas also appears well-positioned against physician Milton Wolf. Sen. Thad Cochran, the six-term Mississippian, appears to be the most vulnerable Republican incumbent, as he faces a spirited push by state Sen. Chris McDaniel.

Alexander seems to be on safe ground as well. Before Flinn filed his papers this week, he called Alexander up as a courtesy because he has “the ultimate respect for the man.”

And when asked if Flinn believed Alexander was a good senator, he paused and said: “For the things that have come up for the time? Yes.”

In an interview at the Capitol this week, Alexander returned the compliment.

“I’ve known him a long time, he’s a friend of mine,” said Alexander, whose campaign has $ 3.1 million in cash.

Asked if Flinn should be considered a threat, Alexander would only say: “I’m doing my job as a United States senator and doing my best to continue to earn the respect of the people of Tennessee.”

Alexander touts bipartisan record

Washington may be toxic to voters — especially Republicans — but Lamar Alexander believes his incumbency will be an asset as he fights off a conservative primary challenge in Tennessee.

The Republican senator said he is emphasizing — even to GOP primary voters — the areas where he has been able to work with Democrats to pass laws during a particularly dry season of lawmaking in Congress. The strategy of highlighting his bipartisan dealmaking is a marked contrast to other Republicans dealing with challengers from the right, many of whom are highlighting their rock-solid opposition to Democratic policy.

“It takes 60 votes to get a result and we have 45 Republicans. If I’m going to fix the debt or lower the student loan rate or give parents more school choice, I’m going to have to have some Democratic support to do it. Tennesseans understand that,” Alexander said in a wide-ranging interview with POLITICO.

(PHOTOS: 10 must-watch House races in 2014)

To rebut conservative groups like Club for Growth and Heritage Action for America that take a dim view of Alexander each year in their annual scorecards, the two-term senator is releasing his own scorecard that highlights his stewardship of nine bills into law. Among the accomplishments he is hyping are a revamp of the federal student loan program and a new drug safety law — achievements Alexander believes stick out in a gridlocked 2013.

“Congress and the president only signed into law 72 laws and I found a way to be a part of nine of those,” Alexander said. “It’s very satisfying to me when I get a chance to work and work across party lines.”

That’s not to say even he believes his record is perfect. Alexander admitted he now regrets his vote in support of the “Cash for Clunkers” program, intended to spur the American auto industry. But he stands strong behind a vote that most riled grassroots conservatives: His support of the Senate’s comprehensive immigration bill.

He said he hears little from people back home criticizing his vote for the immigration legislation, which spurred the conservative machinery back home to find a candidate to challenge him.

(PHOTOS: Lamar Alexander’s top aide investigated for child porn)

“I hear about it from people who like that fact I did something about it,” Alexander said. “For the Congress not to deal with immigration is indefensible. The Nashville City Council can’t do it, the governor of Tennessee can’t do it. It’s the job of the president and the Congress to do and we’re just allowing de facto 11 million people to break the rule of law when we don’t do something about it.”

The former governor, presidential candidate and education secretary insulated himself from higher-profile challenges by locking up endorsements from much of the Tennessee congressional delegation, which means he won’t be facing the same sort of conservative firepower in his August primary as some other Senate GOP incumbents.

The highest-profile challenger Alexander has drawn is conservative state Rep. Joe Carr, and there has been little comprehensive polling done on the race.

Fired Sen. Alexander Aide Allegedly Had Hundreds Of Child Porn Videos

The former top aide to Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) who was arrested Wednesday had hundreds of videos depicting child pornography on a hard drive, according to new court documents.

In a criminal complaint filed on Thursday in federal court in Washington, D.C., a U.S. Postal Inspector described how authorities investigating a website that offered DVDs featuring nude young boys identified Ryan Loskarn, Alexander’s former chief of staff, as a customer back in 2010. In October of this year, the document states, investigators identified Loskarn’s residential IP address on the Gnutella peer-to-peer file-sharing network offering files for download with names that suggested child pornography.

Agents downloaded identical videos from the Gnutella network, and found one that depicted a man performing sexual acts with a prepubescent girl.

On Wednesday, law enforcement agents descended on Loskarn’s Washington, D.C. residence and executed a search warrant. They retrieved a portable hard drive — which they believe Loskarn had placed on a snowy ledge outside one of the home’s windows when they arrived. On the hard drive, authorities found “hundreds of videos depicting underage boys engaged in sexually explicit conduct,” among other videos containing child pornography.

Loskarn was expected to appear in court Thursday to face charges of possession and distribution of child pornography. Alexander announced on Wednesday that he had fired Loskarn, and replaced him with a new chief of staff.

QUOTE:
Archaeologists have uncovered what could be the grave of Alexander the Great at a site near ancient Amphipolis.

The warrior king – who ruled in the 4th century BC – was thought to be buried in Egypt. But experts have now become excited after they uncovered a marble-faced wall dating from the time.

The structure measures an impressive wall measuring 500 metres long and three metres high, which archaeologists believe could contain a royal grave.

The site near ancient Amphipolis lies 370 miles north of Athens. END QUOTE:

Famous Romans Pompey, Augustus and Julius Caesar are all said to have visited his tomb in Alexandria, with Caligula reportedly swiping the warrior’s breastplate for a souvenir.

Pompey, Augustus and Julius Caesar paying homage I seem to have read stories about that.
As far as Caligula…what a weenier….must be something to the Romans delivering water to the elite via lead pipes.

Anyway hope they start digging and get to the bottom of this. If it is Alexander’s final resting place what a find….IMO
