In China, Michelle Obama to stay firmly in "mom in chief" mode

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. first lady Michelle Obama is expected to steer clear of controversial issues such as human rights when she visits China this week but her trip could help advance a top item on her husband’s foreign policy agenda: deepening Washington’s ties with Beijing.

The week-long trip marks only the third foreign solo trip for Obama, who has cultivated a self-described “mom in chief” image, putting her energy into raising her daughters Malia, 15, and Sasha, 12, and signature domestic policy issues such as combating childhood obesity.

She has joked that her motto during her husband’s White House tenure has been to “do no harm.”

In keeping with that cautious approach, the White House said Obama’s message on the trip will focus on cultural ties between the two countries and “the power and importance of education” for young people in both countries.

But her trip, which will be front-page news in China and closely parsed by media, will carry important symbolic value.

“There’s no better surrogate for a president overseas than their spouse,” said Anita McBride, who was chief of staff to former first lady Laura Bush.

McBride said Obama’s visit with Chinese first lady Peng Liyuan can send a powerful diplomatic message, even if what they discuss has little to do with pressing bilateral issues.

“Those are images that convey a relationship,” she said.

Obama will also visit with students and schools, and take her daughters to see the famous Terracotta Warriors.

Since taking office in 2009, President Barack Obama has put a high priority on bolstering the U.S. relationship with China. That goal could take on even greater significance given the deep rift has opened up between the United States and Russia over the Ukraine crisis.

Former first ladies Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton used their time in the international spotlight to forcefully elevate tough questions about human rights abroad.

In 1995, Hillary Clinton, wife of former President Bill Clinton, criticized China’s human rights record in a speech at a United Nations conference in Beijing.

But it is unlikely that Michelle Obama, a Harvard-educated lawyer, will follow in their path.

“She has chosen a more traditional, non-confrontational role as a first lady,” said Laura van Assendelft, a political scientist at Mary Baldwin College. “Other first ladies have pushed those boundaries. Michelle Obama is not pushing any boundaries.”

As first lady, Obama traveled to Mexico in 2010 and to Africa the following year. A private trip to Spain in 2010 with daughter Sasha backfired when she was criticized for spending taxpayer funds on security for what amounted to a holiday.

Now that her husband is in his second term, and does not have to worry about being reelected again, Michelle Obama may take more foreign trips to advance policy goals, McBride said.

“You begin thinking about what you want to leave behind,” said McBride, now at American University in Washington.

Laura Bush traveled to 67 countries to talk about human rights and global health issues during the four years that McBride worked with her, including a notable visit to a refugee camp on the Thai-Burma border to shine a spotlight on conditions there.

THREE GENERATIONS

Obama will deliver another strong, if unspoken, message by taking her daughters and her mother, Marian Robinson, with her to China, said Robert Daly, director of the Wilson Center’s Kissinger Institute on China and the United States.

Robinson lives with the Obama family in the White House.

“The Chinese are very big on three generations under one roof. That is one of the cornerstones of their culture,” Daly said. “That will play very well in the Chinese media.”

Pictures of the three generations of four strong women will make a statement about women’s equality and opportunity, and shatter a stereotype long held by Chinese about how Americans mistreat their elders, he added.

Obama’s visit comes before her husband visits Asian allies Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and the Philippines in late April, a trip where the maritime dispute with China is expected to loom large.

China and Japan each claim sovereignty over a group of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea, and China is also fighting over territory in the South China Sea with the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei.

Ahead of the president’s trip, the White House will want “sweetness and light” from Michelle Obama’s China visit, said Dan Blumenthal, an adviser on China issues in the former George W. Bush administration.

“She can just be who she is, and it’s a win. She doesn’t have to carry a tough message,” said Blumenthal, now director of Asian studies at the American Enterprise Institute think tank.

Taking a page out of George Orwell’s 1984 - where words were banned by a totalitarian state to limit thought – Michelle Obama has thrown her weight behind a campaign to ban the word “bossy”.

FLOTUS tweeted her support for the campaign, which is receiving national media attention having been backed by celebrities such as Beyonce. Apparently, Beyonce (as well as Sony Entertainment which also supports the campaign) isn’t too concerned about the fact that her husband – and the Obama’s close personal friend Jay-Z - routinely refers to women as “bitches” and all kinds of other vulgarities in his songs.

Critics immediately shot back at Obama for lending her support to such a chilling notion, making comparisons to Orwell’s infamous ‘Ingsoc’.

“Girls are less interested in leadership than boys and that’s because they worried about being called bossy,” claims the campaign video. The solution is to ban the word altogether by encouraging parents, employers and teachers to strip it from their vocabulary and re-educate any poor unsuspecting bigot who dares utter it in public.

Illustrating once more how feminism is a top-down tool of cultural marxism – where language and culture takes the blame for all oppression thereby absolving the state, which is the true source of oppression – the campaign is the work of LeanIn.org, which itself is supported by a plethora of big banks, transnational corporations and PR firms.

Second wave feminism does little or nothing to advance genuine women’s right concerns – such as the recent designation of female drivers as potential terrorists in Saudi Arabia – and everything to hide behind the veil of equality as a justification for trampling on everyone’s free speech rights.

Given that literature is replete with examples of sexist, patriarchal and outdated language, forget just banning words, why don’t we start burning books? It’s for the children!

Mainstream feminism’s disdain for free speech is setting the stage for Hillary Clinton’s tilt at the presidency in 2016, which is why top Democratic Party operates like Debbie Wasserman Schultz are also backing these kind of PR campaigns.

Just as critics of Obama were labeled racists for questioning his policies, Hillary’s detractors will be smeared with the “sexist” tag when they dare to speak out.

The ‘ban bossy’ campaign video, featured below, is fast being overtaken by negative comments as the whole farce is rightly condemned for what it is – an onerous attempt to set a dangerous precedent of banning words and restricting free speech in order to fix non-issues contrived by cultural marxists.

Then again, I may just be a sexist thought criminal who needs to be re-educated and have his vocabulary forcibly reduced by means of a full frontal lobotomy – after all, it’s trendy and liberal!

It’s pretty easy to make fun of some celebrities who endorse nonsense. The queen of these is Jenny McCarthy, who seemingly without irony talks about how dangerous vaccines are while simultaneously injecting the most dangerously toxic protein known to science into her face.

Phil Plait, the creator of Bad Astronomy, is an astronomer, lecturer, and author. His latest book is Death from the Skies! These Are the Ways the Universe Will End.

But we humans do tend to listen to celebrities, and so I’m actually very happy when one endorses reality. Actor Sarah Michelle Gellar— best known to BABloggeees, no doubt, from “Buffy, The Vampire Slayer”—has partnered with the March of Dimes and Sanofi Pasterus (the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer) in “Sounds of Pertussis”, a campaign for adults to get their TDaP (tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis) booster shot.

They put together this video to promote the campaign:

Nicely done. They have a Facebook page where you can find their “Breathing Room” discussed in the video.

This campaign is a pretty good idea. I just wrote about the need for vaccinations, as well as for the TDaP booster— which I myself got recently. I talked about people traveling abroad bringing diseases back with them, but I should have also mentioned that many times, unvaccinated friends and family of parents with newborns are the vector for the disease. If more people got their boosters, this terrible circumstance would dwindle.

This blog reaches a lot of folks, and I’m grateful for the chance to make the world a healthier place, and a safer one for infants. But Ms. Gellar’s reach is significantly larger, and I hope this campaign goes far and wide.

Pertussis kills. So can measles, and lots of other diseases. Many of these illnesses can be wiped out by vaccination. We’ve done it before, but we keep getting recurrences and outbreaks because too many people refuse to vaccinate. Herd immunity is our best safeguard against these potentially fatal diseases, and that relies on enough people getting vaccinated.

On the Sounds of Pertussis page they have stories from parents whose children caught pertussis. Two of the stories turn out well, and one…well, I had a very difficult time watching Natalie Norton’s video all the way through. I can’t imagine the horror of watching your own baby suffer from such a devastating illness, let alone watching him die.

Talk to your board-certified doctor. And go to the Sounds of Pertussis page, as well as the other pages I have linked here. Vaccinations are one of the greatest medical successes in human history. But they are useless if we don’t implement them.

CHICAGO (Reuters) – First lady Michelle Obama knows she has star power, and she has used it for four years to champion her causes of fighting childhood obesity and helping military families.

But now that she has successfully made it through the last political campaign for her husband, President Barack Obama, the first lady is also having fun with her popularity – raising questions over whether she has gone too far in becoming a pop culture icon.

Her surprise appearance at the Academy Awards – where she was beamed in from the White House dressed in a sparkling evening gown to announce the Best Picture award – provided ammunition for her critics.

The first lady has enjoyed a steady positive approval rating over the past four years, even at times when her husband sank in the polls.

But the Oscar appearance – coming on the heels of the “mom dance” that she did with late night comedian Jimmy Fallon, which quickly went viral on the Internet – sparked a debate on the proper role of a first lady.

Washington Post columnist Courtland Milloy, who often writes about minority issues, described Obama’s Oscar appearance as “unbecoming frivolity” and urged the first lady to “raise her game” and take up a more expanded role in the second term championing more serious causes.

“Enough with the broccoli and Brussels sprouts,” Milloy wrote this week in the Washington Post. “Where is that intellectually gifted Princeton graduate, the Harvard-educated lawyer and mentor to the man who would become the first African American president of the United States?”

His column sparked hundreds of comments, ranging from people who thought Obama was doing a great job raising awareness about the childhood obesity problem to others who thought she was trying too hard to be like a Hollywood star.

The first lady said she was not surprised by the controversy over her Oscars appearance, but said she would use all forms of media to get out her message and would reach out to all demographics – including filmmakers who could help with her efforts to introduce children to arts and culture.

“Anyone in this position has a huge spotlight,” Obama told a small group of reporters traveling with her on a three-city tour to promote her Let’s Move program to fight childhood obesity.

“We’ve always thought about that spotlight. And taking it, while it’s looking at you, to stand in front of something good so it shines on that too,” Obama said, before jumping and dancing with more than 6,500 kids gathered in Chicago to highlight the importance of daily exercise.

Obama gained much of her popularity because Americans could relate to her, whether she was recounting stories of struggling to pay student loans early in her marriage with President Obama or talking about the difficulties of raising daughters Sasha and Malia on her own in Chicago while her husband worked as a U.S. senator in Washington.

As she travels about the country championing the Let’s Move program, she talks of how she was forced into rethinking her daughters’ eating habits several years ago after their pediatrician warned that they could be on the road to becoming overweight.

She said the Obama administration was the first to face such intense media scrutiny – from 24-hour news cycles to Twitter to innumerable blogs – so it was just inevitable that there was more of a focus on everything she does.

Her programs have shown some progress, with healthier school lunches now being served across the country and childhood obesity rates dropping in some states like Mississippi.

But should Obama be dancing on TV with a comedian dressed in drag or stunning 40 million viewers and the actors attending the Academy Awards?

“You don’t really have a job description as first lady. And you’re held up to this standard where it’s impossible to please everyone all the time,” said Anita McBride, former chief of staff to Laura Bush when she was first lady.

“I wouldn’t say this has crossed the line. But coming on the heels of the very popular ‘Mom Dance’ … It’s saturating. You have to say – how much is too much?,” said McBride.

SECOND TERM

Although the second Obama administration has only just begun, the first lady said she was aware that time was short for her to have an impact.

She said she planned to keep working on her two main projects – Let’s Move and the Joining Forces military families program – but was also trying to decide what other causes she might champion in the next four years.

She said in the coming weeks she would decide what to pursue, but it would certainly focus on kids. Obama said she might begin to get more involved in the international arena but it would have to dovetail with her domestic projects.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan, in Chicago with Obama to announce a new public-private partnership to help kids get 60 minutes of exercise a day, said when the first lady was involved in a cause it added weight to the program.

“I think having the first lady leading that effort – as the mom-in-chief, as she’s called – I think that can be really, really powerful,” he said. “She is beloved, she is respected and I think people will pay attention.”

A 2007 study said only 4 percent of elementary schools and 8 percent of middle schools provide daily physical education courses for the entire school year.
