The proud father took to Instagram to share an adorable photo showing the infant holding his finger with the caption “The most amazing feeling.” The Mexican actor later shared another photo showing him cuddling with his new baby girl. This is the second child for the couple, who’s eldest daughter Elissa Marie turned five only two days before the birth of her baby sister. Congratulations to the happy family!

Shirley Temple, iconic child star, dies at 85

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Shirley Temple, the dimpled, curly-haired child star who sang, danced, sobbed and grinned her way into the hearts of Depression-era moviegoers, has died, according to publicist Cheryl Kagan. She was 85.

Temple, known in private life as Shirley Temple Black, died Monday night at about 11 p.m. at her home near San Francisco. She was surrounded by family members and caregivers, Kagan said.

“We salute her for a life of remarkable achievements as an actor, as a diplomat, and most importantly as our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and adored wife for fifty-five years of the late and much missed Charles Alden Black,” a family statement said.

A talented and ultra-adorable entertainer, Shirley Temple was America’s top box-office draw from 1935 to 1938, a record no other child star has come near. She beat out such grown-ups as Clark Gable, Bing Crosby, Robert Taylor, Gary Cooper and Joan Crawford.

In 1999, the American Film Institute ranking of the top 50 screen legends ranked Temple at No. 18 among the 25 actresses. She appeared in scores of movies and kept children singing “On the Good Ship Lollipop” for generations.

Temple was credited with helping save 20th Century Fox from bankruptcy with films such as “Curly Top” and “The Littlest Rebel.” She even had a drink named after her, an appropriately sweet and innocent cocktail of ginger ale and grenadine, topped with a maraschino cherry.

Temple blossomed into a pretty young woman, but audiences lost interest, and she retired from films at 21. She raised a family and later became active in politics and held several diplomatic posts in Republican administrations, including ambassador to Czechoslovakia during the historic collapse of communism in 1989.

“I have one piece of advice for those of you who want to receive the lifetime achievement award. Start early,” she quipped in 2006 as she was honored by the Screen Actors Guild.

But she also said that evening that her greatest roles were as wife, mother and grandmother. “There’s nothing like real love. Nothing.” Her husband of more than 50 years, Charles Black, had died just a few months earlier.

They lived for many years in the San Francisco suburb of Woodside.

Temple’s expert singing and tap dancing in the 1934 feature “Stand Up and Cheer!” first gained her wide notice. The number she performed with future Oscar winner James Dunn, “Baby Take a Bow,” became the title of one of her first starring features later that year.

Also in 1934, she starred in “Little Miss Marker,” a comedy-drama based on a story by Damon Runyon that showcased her acting talent. In “Bright Eyes,” Temple introduced “On the Good Ship Lollipop” and did battle with a charmingly bratty Jane Withers, launching Withers as a major child star, too.

She was “just absolutely marvelous, greatest in the world,” director Allan Dwan told filmmaker-author Peter Bogdanovich in his book “Who the Devil Made It: Conversations With Legendary Film Directors.” ”With Shirley, you’d just tell her once and she’d remember the rest of her life,” said Dwan, who directed “Heidi” and “Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm.” ”Whatever it was she was supposed to do — she’d do it. … And if one of the actors got stuck, she’d tell him what his line was — she knew it better than he did.”

Temple’s mother, Gertrude, worked to keep her daughter from being spoiled by fame and was a constant presence during filming. Her daughter said years later that her mother had been furious when a director once sent her off on an errand and then got the child to cry for a scene by frightening her. “She never again left me alone on a set,” she said.

Temple became a nationwide sensation. Mothers dressed their little girls like her, and a line of dolls was launched that are now highly sought-after collectables. Her immense popularity prompted President Franklin D. Roosevelt to say that “as long as our country has Shirley Temple, we will be all right.”

“When the spirit of the people is lower than at any other time during this Depression, it is a splendid thing that for just 15 cents, an American can go to a movie and look at the smiling face of a baby and forget his troubles,” Roosevelt said.

She followed up in the next few years with a string of hit films, most with sentimental themes and musical subplots. She often played an orphan, as in “Curly Top,” where she introduced the hit “Animal Crackers in My Soup,” and “Stowaway,” in which she was befriended by Robert Young, later of “Father Knows Best” fame.

She teamed with the great black dancer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson in two 1935 films with Civil War themes, “The Little Colonel” and “The Littlest Rebel.” Their tap dance up the steps in “The Little Colonel” (at a time when interracial teamings were unheard-of in Hollywood) became a landmark in the history of film dance.

Some of her pictures were remakes of silent films, such as “Captain January,” in which she recreated the role originally played by the silent star Baby Peggy Montgomery in 1924. “Poor Little Rich Girl” and “Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm,” done a generation earlier by Mary Pickford, were heavily rewritten for Temple, with show biz added to the plots to give her opportunities to sing.

In its review of “Rebecca,” the show business publication Variety complained that a “more fitting title would be ‘Rebecca of Radio City.’”

She won a special Academy Award in early 1935 for her “outstanding contribution to screen entertainment” in the previous year.

“She is a legacy of a different time in motion pictures. She caught the imagination of the entire country in a way that no one had before,” actor Martin Landau said when the two were honored at the Academy Awards in 1998.

Temple’s fans agreed. Her fans seemed interested in every last golden curl on her head: It was once guessed that she had more than 50. Her mother was said to have done her hair in pin curls for each movie, with every hairstyle having exactly 56 curls.

On her eighth birthday — she actually was turning 9, but the studio wanted her to be younger — Temple received more than 135,000 presents from around the world, according to “The Films of Shirley Temple,” a 1978 book by Robert Windeler. The gifts included a baby kangaroo from Australia and a prize Jersey calf from schoolchildren in Oregon.

“She’s indelible in the history of America because she appeared at a time of great social need, and people took her to their hearts,” the late Roddy McDowall, a fellow child star and friend, once said.

Although by the early 1960s, she was retired from the entertainment industry, her interest in politics soon brought her back into the spotlight.

She made an unsuccessful bid as a Republican candidate for Congress in 1967. After Richard Nixon became president in 1969, he appointed her as a member of the U.S. delegation to the United Nations General Assembly. In the 1970s, she was U.S. ambassador to Ghana and later U.S. chief of protocol.

She then served as ambassador to Czechoslovakia during the administration of the first President Bush. A few months after she arrived in Prague in mid-1989, communist rule was overthrown in Czechoslovakia as the Iron Curtain collapsed across Eastern Europe.

“My main job (initially) was human rights, trying to keep people like future President Vaclav Havel out of jail,” she said in a 1999 Associated Press interview. Within months, she was accompanying Havel, the former dissident playwright, when he came to Washington as his country’s new president.

She considered her background in entertainment an asset to her political career.

“Politicians are actors too, don’t you think?” she once said. “Usually if you like people and you’re outgoing, not a shy little thing, you can do pretty well in politics.”

Born in Santa Monica to an accountant and his wife, Temple was little more than 3 years old when she made her film debut in 1932 in the Baby Burlesks, a series of short films in which tiny performers parodied grown-up movies, sometimes with risque results.

Among the shorts were “War Babies,” a parody of “What Price Glory,” and “Polly Tix in Washington,” with Shirley in the title role.

Her young life was free of the scandals that plagued so many other child stars — parental feuds, drug and alcohol addiction — but Temple at times hinted at a childhood she may have missed out on.

She stopped believing in Santa Claus at age 6, she once said, when “Mother took me to see him in a department store and he asked for my autograph.”

After her years at the top, maintaining that level of stardom proved difficult for her and her producers. The proposal to have her play Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz” didn’t pan out. (20th Century Fox chief Darryl Zanuck refused to lend out his greatest asset.) And “The Little Princess” in 1939 and “The Blue Bird” in 1940 didn’t draw big crowds, prompting Fox to let Temple go.

Among her later films were “The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer,” with Cary Grant, and “That Hagen Girl,” with Ronald Reagan. Several, including the wartime drama “Since You Went Away,” were produced by David O. Selznick. One, “Fort Apache,” was directed by John Ford, who had also directed her “Wee Willie Winkie” years earlier.

Her 1942 film, “Miss Annie Rooney,” included her first on-screen kiss, bestowed by another maturing child star, Dickie Moore.

After her film career effectively ended, she concentrated on raising her family and turned to television to host and act in 16 specials called “Shirley Temple’s Storybook” on ABC. In 1960, she joined NBC and aired “The Shirley Temple Show.”

Her 1988 autobiography, “Child Star,” became a best-seller.

Temple had married Army Air Corps private John Agar, the brother of a classmate at Westlake, her exclusive L.A. girls’ school, in 1945. He took up acting and the pair appeared together in two films, “Fort Apache” and “Adventure in Baltimore.” She and Agar had a daughter, Susan, in 1948, but she filed for divorce the following year.

She married Black in 1950, and they had two more children, Lori and Charles. That marriage lasted until his death in 2005 at age 86.

In 1972, she underwent successful surgery for breast cancer. She issued a statement urging other women to get checked by their doctors and vowed, “I have much more to accomplish before I am through.”

During a 1996 interview, she said she loved both politics and show business.

“It’s certainly two different career tracks,” she said, “both completely different but both very rewarding, personally.”

Houston father pays child support in full but gets six months in jail anyway

A Houston-area man expects to turn himself in to the Harris County jail in a few days after receiving a six-month sentence for failing to pay his child support … which appears to be completely paid up.

The story of Clifford Hall began to go viral Friday after Houston’s Fox affiliate, Fox 26 reported the man’s plight.

Hall claims that his child support payments had been modified in court without his knowledge, and that he quickly made up the $ 3000 difference before his court appearance in November. While he’s been an active participant in his 11-year-old son’s life, the court cited him for violating his visitation requirements — another condition he says had been changed earlier without notice.

His ex-wife had been pressing for an additional $ 3000 in attorney’s fees.

The story itself neither names Hall’s ex-wife, nor her attorney. A call to Quanell X, a minister in the New Black Panther Party who has been pressing Hall’s case, hasn’t yet been returned.

Family court Judge Lisa Millard told Fox 26 that she found Hall in contempt after he walked out of the courtroom when she pronounced him in violation, which she says is a big no-no and may have contributed to the sentencing.

Fired Sen. Alexander Aide Allegedly Had Hundreds Of Child Porn Videos

The former top aide to Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) who was arrested Wednesday had hundreds of videos depicting child pornography on a hard drive, according to new court documents.

In a criminal complaint filed on Thursday in federal court in Washington, D.C., a U.S. Postal Inspector described how authorities investigating a website that offered DVDs featuring nude young boys identified Ryan Loskarn, Alexander’s former chief of staff, as a customer back in 2010. In October of this year, the document states, investigators identified Loskarn’s residential IP address on the Gnutella peer-to-peer file-sharing network offering files for download with names that suggested child pornography.

Agents downloaded identical videos from the Gnutella network, and found one that depicted a man performing sexual acts with a prepubescent girl.

On Wednesday, law enforcement agents descended on Loskarn’s Washington, D.C. residence and executed a search warrant. They retrieved a portable hard drive — which they believe Loskarn had placed on a snowy ledge outside one of the home’s windows when they arrived. On the hard drive, authorities found “hundreds of videos depicting underage boys engaged in sexually explicit conduct,” among other videos containing child pornography.

Loskarn was expected to appear in court Thursday to face charges of possession and distribution of child pornography. Alexander announced on Wednesday that he had fired Loskarn, and replaced him with a new chief of staff.

Rights group intervenes in ludicrous ‘zero tolerance policy’ trend

A 10-year-old has been suspended from school and threatened with expulsion for firing a make-believe arrow at a classmate, prompting a rights group to step in and demand the incident be stricken from the record.

The Rutherford Institute, a civil liberties watchdog group, has intervened in the case of Johnny Jones, a fifth grader at South Eastern Middle School in Fawn Grove, Pa., who found himself in trouble after violating the school’s zero tolerance policy on weapons by miming the action of shooting an arrow from a bow with only his hands.

According to the report, Jones was in class when a classmate held up his folder like an imaginary gun and “shot” at him while he was retrieving a pencil from the teacher. When Jones drew back the strings of an imaginary bow and “shot” back, a girl in the class altered the teacher.

The teacher then passed the matter on to the principal, saying that “firearms” had been involved in the play fighting. Sure enough, instead of using common sense, the principal suspended Jones for a day, contacted the boy’s parents, and threatened expulsion for “making a threat” to another student using a “replica or representation of a firearm”.

Demanding a response by December 13, The Rutherford Institute’s letter (PDF) states “We request that you rescind the suspension and immediately remove all reference to it from Johnny’s permanent school record.”

“There is no reason that Johnny should be stigmatized and branded a miscreant due to the school’s unreasonable application of its zero tolerance policy against him,” notes the letter, signed by Rutherford Senior Staff Attorney Douglas R. McKusick.

The group routinely intervenes in such cases. President John W. Whitehead, describes the school’s response to the incident and others like it as an ongoing effort to “criminalize childish behavior and punish all offenses severely, no matter how minor or non-threatening the so-called infraction may have been.”

“We all want to keep the schools safe, but I’d far prefer to see something credible done about actual threats, rather than this ongoing, senseless targeting of imaginary horseplay,” he added.

While the school district’s zero-tolerance policy encompasses a prohibition of almost any kind of weapon, Rutherford attorneys state that it is ludicrous to consider an imagined weapon a violation of the policy.

“No reasonable argument can be made that the imaginings from the mind of a 10-year-old boy, completely lacking any actual, tangible device, represented a ‘replica’ or a ‘look-alike’ of an actual gun,” they write.

“This atrocious misapplication of rules originally intended to protect students while on school grounds is foolish and actually damages the futures of the children meant to be protected. Moreover, Johnny’s rights were trampled without the due consideration.” the letter concludes.

Once again, these daily incidents all across the country highlight how, in many cases, positions of authority in society have been filled by spineless jellyfish who would rather see kids grow up as mindless automatons than experience the joy of youthful imagination.

History: Teddy Roosevelt yells at a child, teaches a lesson

Of all the men that have called the Oval Office home, Teddy Roosevelt was perhaps the most unique. History has remembered the 26th president for his bullish personality, war record and, of course, the teddy bear.

Just nine days into his presidency, and shortly after the assassination of President William McKinley, Roosevelt found himself leaving a local Washington, D.C. church. According to an article in the Washington Post, Roosevelt was leaving Grace Reformed Church, located near Logan Circle.

Upon exiting, Roosevelt — accompanied by a police officer — noticed a young boy eagerly awaiting his arrival. The boy, armed with a rather large period camera wished to take a photograph of the then-president. This did not make the man that stormed up San Juan Hill very happy.

“You ought to be ashamed of yourself. Trying to take a man’s picture as he leaves a house of worship. It’s a disgrace. You ought to be ashamed of yourself,” the president called out to the no-doubt frightened child.

The Post story goes on to describe Roosevelt’s walk across the city to the home of Captain William S. Cowle, his brother-in-law. Though history has lost the reaction of the child being criticized by a president, one can imagine he was mortified. Despite the outcome for the child, it is interesting to imagine turn-of-the-century Washington. This was a time in which the leader of the free world could not only attend mass at a public church, but also walk around the city to visit family.

Sweden’s cellphone addiction may hinder child development – study

Swedish children may be suffering emotional harm because of their mobile phone-dependent parents, a study has found. One in five parents in Stockholm confessed to having lost sight of their child in a “dangerous place” while focusing on a mobile device.

A new survey by YouGov revealed that one in five Swedish parents have been asked by their children to put their mobile phones down. The problem appears to be particularly prevalent in Stockholm where 1 in 3 children complain about their parents’ dependence on mobile devices.

“Parents put down their kids and pick up their phones. It’s like this all the time,” preschool teacher Anna Lindelöf told Swedish newspaper, Svenska Dagbladet. “Kids have to play by themselves while parents sit and stare at Facebook.”

The study included 521 parents from across Sweden, posing them the question: Have your children ever complained about your smartphone or tablet usage during activities or vacation?

The investigation’s findings have drawn the attention of medical professionals who believe the lack of attention could have detrimental effects on a child’s development.

Pediatrician Lars H. Gustafsson told the newspaper, Expressen, that it was unusual to observe a phenomenon usually associated with depressed parent in mentally healthy ones.

“I often see parents who don’t answer when their children talk to them,” Gustafsson said. “Smaller children need interaction all the time, in everything they discover. The absence of that interaction is very bad for children’s development.”

The Swedes are avid smartphone users, with 63 percent of adults using smartphones, according to Google data. Moreover, Internetbarometer, a Nordic statistics company, found that the number of adults between the ages of 25 and 35 who own a smartphone increased by 32 percent from 2011 to 2012.

Cases of child neglect because of internet addiction have become more commonplace over the last few years. Perhaps the most extreme case was recorded in South Korea in 2010 when a couple caused their three-year-old daughter to starve to death because of their addiction to online games.

Police authorities said the couple spent up to 12 hours every night at internet cafes playing a game called “PRIUS” which allows you to create your own virtual life.

The husband, 41, and wife, 25, also confessed to police that they had fed rotten, powdered milk to their daughter and had often spanked her.
