Allen West Challenges Bill Cosby"s Comments on Muslim Families

Former Rep. Allen West is taking issue with comments made by comedian Bill Cosby suggesting that black American families should emulate Muslim families.

“Bill Cosby said we should b more like Muslims. U mean honor killings, beheadings, suicide bombings? Hope ur kidding sir,” the Florida Republican said Monday, taking to his Twitter account to criticize a Cosby op-ed piece that appeared in the New York Post on Saturday.

Under the subtitle, ‘What Muslims Get Right,’ Cosby wrote, “I’m a Christian. But Muslims are misunderstood. Intentionally misunderstood. We should be more like them. They make sense, especially with their children. There is no other group like the Black Muslims, who put so much effort into teaching children the right things. They don’t smoke, they don’t drink or overindulge in alcohol, they protect their women, they command respect.

“And what do these other people do?” he continued. “They complain about them, they criticize them. We’d be a better world if we emulated them. We don’t have to become black Muslims, but we can embrace the things that work.”

West doubled down on his criticism of Cosby on Tuesday, using Twitter once again.

“Wonder if Cosby appreciates discipline & family values of Syrians who killed 15 yr old?” he tweeted, in reference to a boy who was executed by al-Qaida-affiliated fighters after he was accused of disrespecting Islam’s Prophet Muhammad.

Cosby’s comments about Muslim families were made in the context that changes in the black community need to start with the strengthening of family values.

“The revolution is in the home,” he wrote.

Cruz defends his blunt style

He’s not backing down.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), speaking on Tuesday at a Texas gun manufacturer, defended his confrontational political style and told reporters that he’s not toning down his outspoken, often hard-hitting rhetoric against his political enemies.

Allen: Joke is Cruz gets two votes

“Washington has a long tradition of trying to hurl insults to silence those who they don’t like what they’re saying,” the freshman senator told reporters, according to Reuters. “I have to admit I find it amusing that those in Washington are puzzled when someone actually does what they said they would do.”

Cruz has been criticized for his tone by some in the Senate, including Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), who has compared him to Sen. Joe McCarthy, who launched an anti-communist witch hunt in the 1950s.

Cruz isn’t fazed by the criticism.

“Washington is a rough-and-tumble place, and I certainly don’t mind if some will take shots at me. … What I do think is unfortunate is if the coverage of the political game overshadows the substance,” he said, according to Reuters .

Gen. Allen bows out

Gen. John Allen will not be accepting the job to lead NATO and is instead retiring to take care of health issues within his family, according to a statement from President Obama.

“Today, I met with Gen. John Allen and accepted his request to retire from the military so that he can address health issues within his family,” the president said. “I told General Allen that he has my deep, personal appreciation for his extraordinary service over the last 19 months in Afghanistan, as well as his decades of service in the United States Marine Corps.”

Allen has been considering the decision for a while. The White House said last week that the administration had put his NATO nomination on hold until he made up his mind.

Obama hailed Allen’s leadership in Afghanistan, where he was a commander for 19 months.

“Gen. Allen presided over the significant growth in the size and capability of Afghan National Security Forces, the further degradation of al Qaeda and their extremist allies, and the ongoing transition to Afghan security responsibility across the country,” the president said. “He worked tirelessly to strengthen our coalition through his leadership of the International Security Assistance Force, and to improve our relations with the Afghan government.

“Above all, he cares deeply for the men and women in uniform who serve our nation – as well as their families – and I am grateful for the sacrifices made by his family in supporting him during his service,” he continued. “John Allen is one of America’s finest military leaders, a true patriot, and a man I have come to respect greatly. I wish him and his family the very best as they begin this new chapter, and we will carry forward the extraordinary work that General Allen led in Afghanistan.”

Allen was recently cleared in an investigation of emails he exchanged with Florida socialite Jill Kelley.
