How To Get Into Stanford

Perhaps you are a parent or student considering your next step in the educational ladder. The US host some of the finest universities in the world including the famed Ivy League institutions such as Harvard and Yale. However, Stanford University, set on the west coast vie\’s for the affections aspiring graduates too. The purpose of this article is to highlight a series of key facts about Stanford.

Based in Palo Alto, California, Stanford is rich with spectacular surroundings and the worlds leading companies in technology. Students are just a short drive from the Pacific or the Caltrain from San Francisco. Stanford\’s proximity to Silicon Valley is not just fortuitous, but deliberate. Stanford University was born out of tragedy. In the loss of his son, Leland Stanford Jr., Stanford Sr chose to build Stanford to immortalize his sons memory. Today it\’s known by students as \’The Farm\’ and sits in 8,000 acres of land. Perhaps you\’ve seen the Stanford seal? The schools primary color is cardinal and the seal features a tall Redwood Tree and a motto, translated from German reading \’The Wind of Freedom Blows\’.

It may (or may not) surprise you to learn that Stanford admissions officers receive over 32,000 applicants per year. Although, sadly, just 7% of applicants earn entry. Stanford students come from diverse backgrounds and have given birth to a celebrated rap sheet of alumni. These celebrated graduates include the founders of Hewlett Packard – William and David – as well Nobel Laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners and leading figures in the world of US and international politics.

80% of Stanford students benefited from over $117 million in financial aid in 2010. That averages out at $40,593 per student in 2010 alone.

In the Times league table Stanford was ranked equal 2nd with rival Harvard, ahead of MIT and Princeton.
