WATCH: Bill Nye And GOP Rep. Spar In Climate Change Debate (VIDEO)

Scientist Bill Nye and Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) on Sunday debated climate change on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“There is no debate in the scientific community. And I encourage the Congresswoman to really look at the facts,” Nye said to the Republican representative. “You are a leader. We need you to change things, not deny what’s happening.”

Blackburn, however, insisted that when it comes to energy sources like carbon, not all scientists are looking at the full picture.

“Now, you know, when you look at the social cost of carbon, and there is a lot of ambiguity around that, what you also need to be doing is looking at the benefits of carbon and what that has on increased agriculture production,” she said. “A lot of good study out there about that. A lot of good scientists and biologists who have done that study.”

Watch the full debate via NBC. It starts around the 2 minute mark:

Barney Frank: Not Surprised Rep. Miller Quit After "40 Years Of Stress"

Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) noted that Rep. George Miller’s (D-CA) retirement announcement on Monday might be because the job is just too grueling.

In an interview with TPM on Monday Frank said he understood why Miller would want to retire from Congress: 40 years in politics can really take a toll on someone.

“I’ve been there and I understand why he would do it and I bet you that George will continue to play a very major role in advocacy but the question is not why he’s retiring now,” Frank told TPM on Monday afternoon, just a few hours after Miller announced that he would retire from Congress at the end of 2014. “I am not at all surprised that after 40 years of stress he just doesn’t want to do it anymore.”

Miller and Frank are both regarded as some of the most liberal members of Congress in the past few decades (although Frank is considered the more fiery of the two). Frank announced his retirement plans back in 2011.

“I’m a few years older than George but I also called it quits after 40 years and it wasn’t because I thought we’d take the House back. Frankly, at that point, if someone had told me at the beginning of 2011 that we’d take the House back I would’ve quit earlier,” Frank continued.

Recently Miller has been one of the earliest backers of Democrats’ current push to raise the minimum wage. Miller, along with a number of other liberal lawmakers, was able to push the White House to embrace a $ 10.10 minimum wage hike. So why retire now?

“You’re judging, politically, a very human decision. And I haven’t talked to George but this,” Frank said. “A month after I had retired I realized that I was no longer flinching when the phone rang and I no longer worried about what god damned problem that some asshole caused that I gotta deal with now.”

The former Massachusetts congressman described Miller as a “passionate” liberal and a consistent defending of peoples’ right to join unions.

“He’s a passionate advocate for all the causes you believe in and the more deeply you believe in things, the harder the job is emotionally,” Frank said. “You take the losses personally — the frustrations of not being able to get things done. And human nature being what it is you tend to — you win something okay but it’s the losses, the inability to do things that keep you up at night.”

Dem Rep. Ellison: Obama Meant "If You Misunderstood What I Was Trying To Say, I"m Sorry"

REP. KEITH ELLISON (D-MINN.): You know, I just want to say that I think that everything that the president said and did was in pursuit of trying to get Americans, all Americans health care. So I think even though he may have said, if you like your decent insurance, your insurance that works, then you can keep it, I think that people really get that. When — he owned it. He said, look, man, if you misunderstood what I was trying to say, I’m sorry about that.

I think that shows integrity. He didn’t do anything to self-promote. He did — what he was doing he was trying to do — to help Americans all over this country for decades.

REP. TOM COLE (R-OK): I’m going to disagree a little bit–

(CROSSTALK)

ELLISON: Intentions count.

COLE: — with Keith. We knew back in 2009, 2010, this was going to happen. The Congressional Budget Office put out studies about it. We made the points, and we know now the administration had plenty of documents.

(CROSSTALK)

COLE: — were going to lose health care here. So I think this does get to credibility as well as competence.

ELLISON: These plans actually, many of these, these high-deductible, high-exclusion plans, they don’t — they were not quality plans in many cases. And the fact is, they were for a small — they might work for somebody who had a lot of money saved up, but for other folks, they just didn’t. There’s a reason those premiums were low.

Republican Rep. Dale Kooyenga: “There are certain values that the state upholds. If the values aren’t consistent at the local level, there is an opportunity for the state to come in and say these are our principles and they are good.”

The conservative Wisconsin State Journal is again trying to alert fellow Republicans something is dangerously wrong at the Capitol. While Republicans vilified Madison for forcing liberalism on everyone else, ramming conservatism down our throats is A-Okay? Didn’t think so.

The line that stood out for me is this breathtaking rightwing authoritarian philosophical statement:

Rep. Dale Kooyenga, R-Brookfield: “There are certain values that the state upholds. If the values aren’t consistent at the local level, there is an opportunity for the state to come in and say these are our principles and they are good.”

Gulp! Sound frighteningly familiar? Sounds a lot like what we heard from so many despotic foreign leaders.

Reporter Matthew DeFour wrote this nice summary:

Since consolidating control of state government in 2011, Gov. Scott Walker and the Republican Legislature have enacted a series of laws that upend a bedrock of their party’s conservatism: the principle of local control. The GOP has wrested from local government’s control of cellphone tower siting, shoreland zoning restrictions, landlord-tenant regulations, public employee residency requirements, family medical leave rules for private companies and large soft drink bans, among other things. It instituted a statewide voucher program opposed by many school boards and has kept tight property tax caps on school districts and municipalities. The latest and perhaps most disconcerting example for many local officials is a bill introduced by Sen. Tom Tiffany, R-Hazelhurst, that would limit a municipality’s ability to regulate certain aspects of frac sand mining operations, such as blasting, damage to highways, and air and water quality.

“Many (municipal leaders) will tell you how terrible it is and how it’s the worst they’ve ever seen,” said Dan Thompson, executive director of the League of Wisconsin Municipalities.

But of course denial helps Republicans disconnect from their own hypocrisy:

Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, R-Juneau, said “legislators always take into account local feedback when developing bills,” including specific bill language. “The concerns of municipalities are carefully considered…

When Republicans are whining about there being too much local control, well…..

Walker spokesman Tom Evenson said other changes, such as ending residency requirements and the soft drink provision, are meant to protect individual freedoms, Evenson said.

Nice to know our state GOP is protecting our freedom to shop:

Republicans have long promoted themselves as the party of decentralized government and local control. UW-Madison political science professor emeritus Dennis Dresang. “But boy, recently, that’s really going out the door. What we see from the tea party types and the radical right types is, ‘I’ve got an idea, I’ve got an agenda, and it really ought to apply across the board.”

How do Republicans rationalize their authoritarian behavior?

Republicans … say many of the recent moves to limit local control derive from a different party plank than local control — deregulation.

If you want to know what the guiding philosophy of our rightwing authoritarian one party government is right now, Rep. Dale Kooyenga made it perfectly clear:

“There are certain values that the state upholds. If the values aren’t consistent at the local level, there is an opportunity for the state to come in and say these are our principles and they are good.”

“Rightwing Authoritarian” is a term defined in this recent blog post. Check it out.

Rep. Joe Wilson Vindicated

On September 9, 2009, Joe Wilson, Congressman from South Carolina, shouted “You lie!” when President Obama was touting the benefits of his Affordable Care Act, now dubbed “Obamacare.”  Many in America were shocked that anyone would call the President of the United States a liar in such a forum as a presidential address to a joint session of Congress.

But, now, as we look back on 5 years of Barack Obama, we see that Obama and his Administration do lie.  And they lie a lot.

  • Both Eric Holder and Barack Obama stated that “Fast and Furious was a program begun in the Bush Administration”. That was a lie. The Bush Administration had, in fact, shut down any efforts to track illegal shipments of guns to Mexico because it was a dangerous and untenable undertaking.

  • Hillary Clinton, Susan Wright and Barack Obama all stated that the attack in Benghazi was caused by Islamist spontaneous reaction to an anti-Islamist video produced in the United States. We know now – and they knew then – that the attack in Benghazi was a well planned effort by well armed Islamic extremists with connections to Al Qaeda.

  • The President assured us that “….. the IRS targeting of conservative groups like the Tea Party…” was an isolated instance of rogue IRS employees in the Cincinnati office. We now know that the senior levels of the Administration (e.g., the Treasury Department General Counsel, the Deputy Secretary of the Department of the Treasury, and the Office of the White House Counsel) were acutely aware of these plans to target these conservative groups and were worried about these

  • The President and the National Director of Intelligence reassured the American people time and time again that the phone calls and emails of Americans were not being monitored and recorded as part of our intelligence programs. We know that to be false and, further, we now know that our electronic spying is international in scope and technologically sophisticated.

These are but a few of the lies that Barack Obama and his “partners in deception” have pushed upon the American people.  Presidents and Administrations have historically concealed intelligence operations and national security concerns from the American public.  But Barack Obama knows no limits to the lying that he and his Administration concoct to deceive and misdirect Americas.

Recently, the disastrous rollout of Obamacare has provided fertile fields for more lying.

  • “If you like your current insurance plan, you can keep it. Period.”

  • “If you like your current doctor, you can keep that doctor.”

  • “Your premiums will go down an average of $ 2500 per year.”

  • “The cost of this national healthcare program will be less than $ 1 trillion.”

  • “Obamacare would not cover illegal aliens.”

  • “Obamacare would not cover abortions.”

These are not just lies.  These are damn lies that the Administration knew would be such, but still foisted them on the American public to divert attention away from the truth about Obamacare and the impact it would have upon us all.

Joe Wilson was right when he said “You lie.”

To my knowledge, the only truth that Obama has ever uttered is that “He would fundamentally change America.”

And he is doing just that with lies and deceit.

Rep. Pete Sessions named as man behind contested Obama insult

Despite the White House’s insistence that the whole brouhaha is a “misunderstanding,” the Huffington Post reports that it was Texas Republican Pete Sessions who, during the negotiations over the government shutdown, told President Obama, “I cannot even stand to look at you.”

The Huffington Post’s reporting, which is based on conversations with two unnamed senators, outlines quite the game of D.C. telephone: according to HuffPo, the story likely reached Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin through Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who in turn heard about it first from a White House staffer who was present at the time.

Harry Reid then told his caucus about Sessions’ flap. According to the report, Reid said that the president’s response to Sessions was a “dignified” recognition that the two men held vastly different beliefs.

More from the Huffington Post:

Sessions spokeswoman Torrie Miller said Thursday that the lawmaker never made those comments.

“He did not,” Miller said. “I think it was made clear yesterday from Jay Carney that the exchange you are referring to did not happen.”

Brendan Buck, a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), has been demanding an apology from Durbin.

“Senator Durbin’s accusation is a serious one, and it appears to have been invented out of thin air,” Buck said in a Wednesday statement. “The senator should disclose who told him this account of events, retract his reckless allegation immediately, and apologize.”

But Durbin isn’t backing down from his original claims.

“Sen. Durbin stands by his comments,” Durbin spokesman Max Gleischman told HuffPost Wednesday.

A request for comment from Carney was not returned, nor was a request for comment from a spokesman for Reid.

Griffin confirmed his plans with POLITICO. | AP Photo

Arkansas Rep. Tim Griffin, a second-term Republican, announced on Monday that he would not seek reelection in 2014, citing a desire to spend more time with his family.

“It has been an agonizing and difficult decision involving much prayer, thought and discussion. We have decided that now is the time for me to focus intently on my top priority, my family, as Elizabeth and I raise our two young children,” Griffin said in a statement to the Arkansas news site Talk Business.

“To that end, I will not seek re-election to a third term. I will complete my second term, but I have made no decision as to my plans after Congress except that I will continue in public service, including as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve,” he said.

Griffin confirmed his plans to POLITICO.

The Republican was elected in 2010, succeeding longtime Democratic Rep. Vic Snyder, who retired that year. Griffin held a much-coveted seat on the powerful, tax-writing Ways and Means Committee.

Griffin, an ambitious up-and-comer who got his start in George W. Bush’s White House and then became a U.S. Attorney, had long been mentioned as a potential candidate for statewide office. But he decided to take a pass on campaigns for governor and Senate in 2014.

Democrats are eying Griffin’s Little Rock-area 2nd District seat, in which Mitt Romney received 54 percent of the vote. Patrick Henry Hays, the former North Little Rock Mayor, has been in talks with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee about running for the seat.

Rep. Peter King fires Republican Cruz missile, says time to ‘go after’ Ted Cruz ‘by name’

Tom Howell Jr.
Washington Times
Oct. 14, 2013

Republican Congressman Peter King said Monday it is time to take the gloves off and call out members of his own party by name, after a failed strategy to defund Obamacare appeared to diminish the GOP’s reputation in recent polls.

Mr. King, of New York, said he’s not going to take it anymore and will freely criticize freshman Sen. Ted Cruz, Texas Republican, who led the drive to scrap the health care law as a precondition for a spending deal ahead of Oct. 1.

“Ted Cruz and 30 or 40 people in the House. We have to start going after him by name. … It’s really time to speak out against him,” Mr. King told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

GOP: This week, both parties came together to make sure that the families of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country were given the benefits they deserve. This bipartisanship should continue, both as we look towards ways at reopening our entire government, and as we tackle our nation’s enormous debt. Rep. Amash: Republicans Doing Obama A "Favor" By Pushing To Delay Obamacare

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: Congressman Amash, let me bring this to you. The president talking about these looming showdowns over the potential government shutdown this week. We hit the debt limit on October 18, I believe.

And you saw the president; he pushed back a few times. He certainly seems to be saying he is not going to negotiate at all over the debt limit despite the precedence. Are you, and he’s banking, I believe, on Republicans in the House either falling apart or caving.

REP. JUSTIN AMASH (R-MICHIGAN): Well we have to have compromise. The president himself is arguing that we’re not willing to compromise. We’re willing to compromise. And part of that compromise means when you want to borrow more money, we’re going to have to have some cuts in government. And that’s all Republicans are asking for.

And we’re not talking about draconian cuts–

STEPHANOPOULOS: Well there’s a strong faction asking for defunding Obamacare though.

AMASH: We’re talking about delaying Obamacare for a year, which is something the president has asked for with the Employer Mandate. So let’s delay it for everyone. I think we’re doing the president a favor if we delay it.

AMASH: The president is not ready to be implemented. If anything the president should be asking us to delay it because it’s better for him politically.

GOP Weekly Address: Rep. Black On Preventing Fraud & Abuse In Obamacare

GOP: In this week’s address, Rep. Diane Black (R-TN) discusses legislation passed by the House in a bipartisan vote to protect taxpayers by preventing fraud and abuse in ObamaCare.

REP. DIANE BLACK: “Hi, I’m Diane Black, and I represent Tennessee’s Sixth Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. What an honor it is to be speaking with you.

“Protecting taxpayer dollars is one of Washington’s most important responsibilities. Your money should be spent wisely or not at all. And everything we do to stop waste and fix broken government removes obstacles to creating jobs and building a stronger economy.

“This week, the House took on a hot spot for fraud and abuse in the president’s health care law by passing a bill I authored called the No Subsidies Without Verification Act. This legislation stops the government from issuing health care subsidies until it has a system in place to prevent fraud. It’s that simple.

“Now, you’d be right to ask, why isn’t this the case already? Well, in an attempt to prop up its struggling health care law, the Obama administration decided they’d hand out subsidies without verifying who’s eligible. They just want to rely on the honor system. You heard that right: instead of exercising common sense and accountability, the Administration is willing to just give away your tax dollars – no questions asked.

“Not only is that unfair to hardworking taxpayers like you, it opens the door a mile wide to fraud and abuse. According to one independent estimate, some 250 billion dollars in bad payments could be doled out over the next decade.

“This is nonsense. And members of both parties agree. Democrats on the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee have also come out for requiring verification. Now we need the full Democratic-led Senate to act.

“This is just the latest in a string of bipartisan efforts to repeal and protect Americans from the president’s health care law. The House has also acted in bipartisan fashion to give individuals and families the same delay from the law’s mandates that big businesses have received. The president himself has signed seven bills that dismantle parts of the law.

“It’s important work, and like many of you, this issue affects me personally. I’ve been a registered nurse for more than 40 years now, and I can tell you the things patients and their families count on – their doctors, their plans, the cost of their care – all of this comes under siege in the president’s health care law. It won’t just fail to keep its promises; it will make things much worse. You don’t have to take my word for it: every day we’re seeing new reports of higher costs, less access, and fewer jobs.

“Together, we can stop this ‘train wreck’ and put the focus back on patient-centered solutions. Together, we can build a stronger economy that rewards hard work and people who do the right thing.

“Again, it has been my honor to address you on behalf of my colleagues. Thank you for listening.”

Rep. Allen Grayson: Syrian War "Is Not Our Problem"

Rep. Jeff Duncan: This Administration Has A Serious Credibility Issue

DUNCAN: “You know I can’t discuss the possibility of U.S. involvement in the Syrian civil war without also talking about Benghazi. This administration has a serious credibility issue with the American people. There are questions surrounding the Benghazi terrorist attack almost a year. When you factor in the IRS targeting of conservative groups, the AP and James Rosen issues, Fast and Furious, and NSA spying programs, the bottom line is there is a need for accountability and trust building from the administration. To paraphrase Friedrich Nietzsche, he said I’m not upset over you not telling me the truth. I’m upset because from now on, I can’t believe you. The administration has a credibility issue. In my opinion, Secretaries Kerry and Hagel, Benghazi is germane to the discussions in Syria, because as you stated Mr. Secretary, the world was and is watching for our response. But after almost a year of not bringing anyone to justice in Benghazi, they are watching our response. Mr. Kerry, your predecessor asked what difference does it make? Well now this is the difference, Mr. Secretary: These issues call into question the accountability of this administration, its commitment to the personnel on the ground and the judgment that it uses when making these determinations. The American people deserve answers before we move forward talking about military involvement in Syria. Section 4 of your testimony today said this is about accountability. Sure it is. The American people deserve answers about Benghazi before we move forward with military involvement in Syria’s civil war. This is a picture – you might not be able to see it here, but you might be able to see it on the screen – this is a picture of Tyrone Woods given to me by his father Charles Woods, a Navy SEAL. The Woods family deserves answers. He was killed in Benghazi. America deserves answers before we send another man or woman the caliber of Ty Woods into harm’s way especially in a civil war, especially when there’s no clear indication that there is an imminent threat to the United States. I don’t question that chemical weapons were used in Syria. I’ve looked at the classified briefings. I do ask that if so, where are the other signatory countries of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) as the U.S. beats the drums of war against this regime in Syria? I have spoken to hundreds of constituents. This represents about 300 emails that my office has gotten and not a one, not a one member in my district in South Carolina are the emails of the people that have my contacted my office say ‘Go to Syria and fight this regime.’ To a letter, they say ‘no, do not go into Syria. Don’t get involved in their civil war.’ I spoke to eighth graders, about 150 eighth graders, yesterday. They get it. They get it that we shouldn’t be drug into somebody else’s civil war where there are no good guys. There are no good guys to get behind here and I can only envision an escalation of this current conflict. The same administration that was so quick to singly involve the U.S. in Syria now was so reluctant to use the same resources at its disposal to attempt to rescue the four brave Americans that fought for their lives at Benghazi. Mr. Kerry, you have never been one who has advocated for anything other than caution when involving U.S. forces in past conflicts. The same is true for the president and the vice president. Is the power of the executive branch so intoxicating that you would abandon past caution in favor of pulling the trigger on a military response so quickly? The reason that I say Benghazi is germane to our discussion on Syria is this: Secretary Kerry, have there been any efforts on the part of the United States directly or indirectly to provide weapons to the Syrian rebels? That would also include facilitating the transfer of weapons from Libyan rebels to Syrian rebels.

KERRY: Have there been efforts to…?

DUNCAN: Put weapons in the hands of the Syrian rebels. Also the transfer of weapons from Libya to Syria.

KERRY: Let me begin Congressman by challenging your proposition that I’ve never done anything except advocate caution, because I volunteered to fight for my country and that wasn’t a cautious thing to do when I did it.

CROSSTALK

KERRY: I’m going to finish, Congressman. I am going to finish. When I was in the United States Senate, I supported military action any number of occasions including Grenada, Panama, I can run down a list of them. I am not going to sit here and be told by you that I don’t have a sense of what the judgment is with respect to this. We’re talking about people being killed by gas and you want to go talk about Benghazi and Fast and Furious.

DUNCAN: I absolutely want to talk about Benghazi. Four Americans lost their lives. I have sympathy for the people in Syria. And I do think there should be a worldwide response. But we should act cautiously.

CROSSTALK

KERRY: We are acting cautiously. We are acting so cautiously that the president of the United States was accused of not acting because he wanted to have sufficient evidence and he wanted to build the case properly.

DUNCAN: It’s been 15 days.

KERRY: Congressman, Congressman.

CROSSTALK

KERRY: Mr. Chairman, point of privilege here, this is important. I think this is important. I think it is important whether or not we’re going into Syria in a way that the Congressman describes which I think most people in America don’t want to see. You don’t want to do that. That’s why the president has said no boots on the ground. This is not about getting into Syria’s civil war. This is about enforcing the principle that people shouldn’t be allowed to gas their citizens with impunity and if we don’t vote to do this, Assad will interpret from you that he’s free to go and do this any day he wants to. That’s what this is about, not getting involved in Syria’s civil war. So let’s draw the proper distinction here Congressman. We don’t deserve to drag this into yet another Benghazi discussion when the real issue here is whether or not the Congress is going to stand up for international norms with respect to dictators that have only been broken twice until Assad: Hitler and Saddam Hussein. And if we give license to somebody to continue that, shame on us.
