OBAMA, BIDEN AT HOUSE DEMS" RETREAT – Obama to vow millions in drought aid in CA – Members channel Frank Underwood – DOC HASTINGS TO RETIRE – Issa heads to N.H.

By Scott Wong (swong@politico.com or @scottwongDC)

THE DAY AHEAD – Vice President Joe Biden is rallying the troops this morning at House Democrats’ annual issues conference at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay in Cambridge, Md. President Obama takes over the microphone at 10:40 a.m., then flies to Fresno, Calif., with Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer and Rep. Jim Costa to discuss his administration’s response to the drought.

OBAMA TO VOW MILLIONS IN AID FOR DROUGHT – Roger Runningen reports for Bloomberg: “U.S. President Barack Obama is offering millions of dollars in aid and other assistance to California farmers, ranchers and communities beset by one of the worst droughts in the state’s history. The federal help will be detailed today by Obama when he’s joined by California Governor Jerry Brown in Fresno, in the state’s fertile Central Valley. The drought is forcing farmers there to leave idle thousands of acres of fields in the state that supplies almost half of the nation’s fruits and vegetables. It has also left 17 rural towns so low on drinking water that the state may need to start trucking in supplies. …

– “The administration plans to accelerate distribution of as much as $ 100 million in aid to ranchers to help feed livestock and offer compensation for losses. The Agriculture Department is also making available $ 15 million in conservation aid for the worst drought regions in California and five other drought-stricken states to reduce wind erosion on damaged fields and improve livestock access to water. The White House said $ 60 million has been made available to California food banks for families affected by the drought, and plans are under way to establish 600 summer meal sites in hard-hit regions this summer.” http://bloom.bg/1iVnlf0

– The president will also ask Congress to create a $ 1 billion “Climate Resiliency Fund” in his budget request next month, reports our own Alex Guillen.  http://politi.co/1gfoEVC

FEDERAL OFFICES will open two hours late this morning as the Washington, D.C., region digs out from a second wave of snow in as many nights. OPM: http://1.usa.gov/1bw9GbZ

NOBODY DOES ALERTMAGEDDON LIKE D.C., writes the Wall Street Journal’s Elizabeth Williamson: “Finally, Washington had a blizzard worthy of seven days of storm tracking, closures, cancellations and widespread hoarding. Nobody does snow-related Alertmageddon like D.C. The capital city, with its legions of warm-weather transplants and a workforce largely inexperienced in manual labor, approaches every forecast of snow, no matter how sketchy, with an orgy of meteorological modeling, thousands of words of commentary and a run on the dairy section. Hurricanes, by comparison, don’t get much attention. …

– “The House moved up its vote on increasing the nation’s debt ceiling—legislation responsible for three years of controversy—from Wednesday to Tuesday because of the potential for snow. On Wednesday, the Senate quickly passed the debt ceiling bill, as legislators tweeted their intent to blow town. Also canceled: Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen’s appearance before the Senate Banking Committee, hearings on the minimum wage and Food and Drug Administration drug approvals … Finally, the whole federal government shut down, followed by the city government, followed by most of the White House.” http://on.wsj.com/1lNU4UP

PROGRAMMING NOTE – There will be no Huddle on Monday due to the Presidents’ Day holiday. My able colleagues Ginger Gibson and Seung Min Kim will be filling in for the remainder of the week. Send them your news tips and trivia questions at ggibson@politico.com and skim@politico.com.

MOVE OVER eHARMONY … The Democratic-aligned Americans United for Change is having some fun with Valentine’s Day this year. The group is out with a mock online dating site with a profile video for ‘Minny Mumwage,’ who says she would love nothing more than getting a date with Speaker Boehner on the House floor, as she depressingly hasn’t been on one since 2009. See it here at www.CongressMingle.com. Watch the video here: http://youtu.be/ACvigtaTevo

D.C.’S VALENTINE TO ITSELF: BELTWAY CELEBRATES ‘HOUSE OF CARDS’ – Andrea Drusch reports for POLITICO: “D.C. is in love this Valentine’s Day — with itself. Netflix released the second season of its original series House of Cards on Friday, and media and politicos can’t wait to settle into thirteen straight hours of a show that centers on the very industry in which they work and live every day. Whether they’re planning to power through the whole season in a single night or space it out over the coming weeks, the show’s loyal fans can’t stop talking about the next chapter for D.C.’s shadow cast. ‘It’s a fun escape from what day-to-day life on the Hill is actually like,’ said Alex Conant, press secretary for Sen. Marco Rubio, in an interview. He plans to dive into the show right away. ‘It makes politics in Washington appear even worse than it is, which is a feat.’

– “Conant was among many to take to Twitter on Wednesday night encouraging Netflix to release the series a day early when the federal government was closed for bad weather. While it might seem ironic for people working in politics and journalism to ‘escape’ to a show about, well, politics and journalism, Conant isn’t alone in the sentiment. … ‘I hope to be totally entertained, to completely dragged out of my world and into a fantasy of what goes on Capitol Hill,’ said Fox News host Greta Van Susteren in an interview, of her expectations for the new season.” http://politi.co/1jgkHQL

TODAY IN CONGRESS – Both the House and Senate have adjourned through next week for the Presidents’ Day holiday. House Democrats wrap up their annual conference today in Cambridge, Md., with visits from Vice President Joe Biden and President Barack Obama.

THE WSJ EDITORIAL BOARD is calling Sen. Ted Cruz “The Minority Maker” for forcing Republicans to break his filibuster on the debt-ceiling bill: “We’re all for holding politicians accountable with votes on substantive issues, but Mr. Cruz knew he couldn’t stop a debt increase the House had already passed. He also had no alternative strategy if the bill had failed, other than to shut down the government again, take public attention away from ObamaCare, and make Republicans even more unpopular. Democrats beat the odds and retained their Senate majority in 2010 and 2012 in part because they stuck together. If Republicans fail again this November, a big reason will be their rump kamikaze caucus.” http://on.wsj.com/LYTBSg

COMCAST READIES FOR WAR IN WASHINGTON – Tony Romm and Anna Palmer report for the hometown paper: “Cable giant Comcast started the day with a call to arms, hosting its lobbyists and consultants, along with Time Warner Cable’s, on a private conference call to begin building a strategy to beat back threats in Washington that could jeopardize its $ 45 billion merger. Comcast’s top congressional lobbyist Melissa Maxfield ran the call, laying out the company’s Washington outreach strategy for its in-house government affairs team and for its hired guns. Consultants for Comcast and Time Warner Cable were sent the press release announcing the merger and talking points to use on Capitol Hill and at federal agencies.

– “K-Streeters also began reaching out to Capitol Hill and agency staffers to report back on how the merger proposal was being received, according to sources familiar with the strategy. … The activity lays the groundwork for what’s shaping up to be an aggressive campaign by Comcast to sell the Time Warner Cable deal in Washington. Sources familiar with the company said they expect Comcast to try to sway lawmakers, community organizations, agencies and other groups in advance of public hearings most observers expect will be scheduled in the coming months.” http://politi.co/1buJy3W

HASTINGS NOT SEEKING REELECTION – Mike Faulk reports for the Yakima (Wash.) Herald-Republic: “In a decision that surprised some, longtime U.S. Rep. Doc Hastings said Thursday he’ll retire at the end of the year after 20 years in Congress representing the 4th Congressional District. ‘It’s been a great privilege,’ said Hastings, a Pasco Republican, in an interview with the Yakima Herald-Republic. Retirement has been on his mind for several years, said Hastings, 73, adding that his family — wife Claire, three adult children and eight grandchildren — influenced his decision. ‘It’s been 20 years. I have to say that my family played a big part of (the decision).’ … Hastings, a small businessman before he entered politics full time, was first elected in 1994 when he defeated then-Rep. Jay Inslee of Selah, now Washington’s governor. Over time, his seat became one of the safest in the country as he handily defeated Democratic challengers and never faced a serious threat from far-right elements of the Republican Party.” http://bit.ly/1kH2ejL

– SPEAKER BOEHNER: “For nearly two decades, Doc Hastings has served in the House with honor, humility and distinction.  In addition to being a skilled legislator and leader, he’s the epitome of grace and class, and he’s a very dear friend.  I’m grateful for Doc’s service to our institution and our nation, and for his friendship and support throughout our many years together in the House.”

FOR ISSA, RED MEAT = BIG MONEY – Paul Singer reports for USA Today: “As chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Rep. Darrell Issa is discovering a powerful political equation: red meat = money.  At the close of 2013, the California Republican had raised more campaign money than nearly all of the other House committee chairmen, trailing only Budget Chairman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, who was the party’s vice presidential nominee in 2012. According to FEC records, Issa’s campaign brought in $ 2.15 million in 2013, while Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich., brought in $ 2.05 million and Financial Services Chairman Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, and Transportation and Infrastructure Chairman Bill Shuster, R-Pa., both brought in $ 2.08 million.  Not the biggest war chests in the House – for example, Majority Leader Eric Cantor posted a $ 3.93 million haul for the non-election year – but robust totals. (None of this counts receipts of the members’ leadership PACs or related fundraising entities.).” http://usat.ly/1lNY5Zp

– Issa makes two stops in New Hampshire next week before heading back to California for more events, aides said: The Concord/Merrimack County GOP Lincoln Day Dinner (2/17) and the Committee to elect House Republicans (New Hampshire State House) Breakfast in Manchester (2/18).

WARNER’S FLEETING ‘SNOWBAMACARE’ TWEET – Tal Kopan writes for POLITICO: “Call it a snow-pas. Sen. Mark Warner’s office blamed a staff snow day ‘#fail’ for a deleted tweet Thursday morning that made a joke about the Virginia GOP and the winter storm that shut down Washington. ‘Just a matter of time: waiting for the @VA_GOP to claim this winter storm was caused by The Affordable Care Act. #Snowbamacare,’ the account tweeted, deleting it 26 seconds later, according to an archive of deleted tweets kept by the Sunlight Foundation. … Warner’s Senate account bio says tweets come from both the senator and staff. Warner’s communications director took responsibility for the errant tweet. ‘It was my mistake. I acknowledged it as quickly as possible, and I apologize,’ Kevin Hall said in an email to POLITICO.” http://politi.co/1buKpS5

Michael Hastings Feared His Mercedes Had Been Tampered With

Day before crash: “He was afraid to drive his own car”

Michael Hastings Feared His Mercedes Had Been Tampered With 220813crash

The very day before a suspicious car crash claimed his life, journalist Michael Hastings feared his Mercedes had been tampered with and asked to borrow a friend’s vehicle, telling her that he was “scared and wanted to leave town.”

The revelation, which emerged in an LA Weekly interview with Jordanna Thigpen, re-emphasizes the fact that Hastings was fearful for his safety having complained of being under scrutiny by the FBI.

Helicopters often circle over the hills, but Hastings believed there were more of them around whenever he was at home, keeping an eye on him. He came to believe his Mercedes was being tampered with. “Nothing I could say could console him,” Thigpen says.

One night in June, he came to Thigpen’s apartment after midnight and urgently asked to borrow her Volvo. He said he was afraid to drive his own car. She declined, telling him her car was having mechanical problems.

“He was scared, and he wanted to leave town,” she says.

The next day, around 11:15 a.m., she got a call from her landlord, who told her Hastings had died early that morning. His car had crashed into a palm tree at 75 mph and exploded in a ball of fire.

Hastings’ concern that his Mercedes had been sabotaged will spur theories that his car crash was not an accident, despite the release of anautopsy report earlier this week which did not indicate any foul play.

Although the autopsy report clearly indicated that the small amounts of methamphetamine and marijuana found in Hastings’ blood did not contribute to the crash, the mainstream media has gone out of its way to portray Hastings as a troubled drug user who had relapsed and was about to head into rehab.

It seems far more likely that Hastings’ drug use after being sober for five years was merely a reaction to the fact that he was being harassed by the feds. As Infowars reported, individuals from an unknown agency visited Hastings’ home the day before his death.

The day before he died, Hastings also warned in an email that his friends and colleagues were being interviewed by the FBI and told them to get a lawyer, stating he was “onto a big story” and needed “to go off the rada[r] for a bit.” Friends confirmed that the journalist was “very paranoid” about the feds watching him.

According to whistleblower organization WIkileaks, Hastings also contacted a Wikileaks attorney “just a few hours before he died, saying that the FBI was investigating him.”

The Department of Justice indicated in a court filing last week that the FBI does have documents on Hastings despite the agency initially denying it had ever had him under investigation.

Speculation that Hastings could have been murdered center around comments made by former counter-terror czar Richard Clarke, who pointed out the ease with which modern vehicles could be hijacked via computer hacking. A Forbes video demonstrates how it is now possible to commandeer a car using an iPad.

Other questions have surrounded surveillance camera footage of the crash, which appears to show three explosions before Hastings’ Mercedes comes to a stop. WItnesses also described explosions, with some comparing the sound to bomb blasts. Many automotive experts have pondered why the Mercedes violently exploded into flames.

The evidence of foul play in the death of Michael Hastings has been piling up since the incident happened, and now another witness is stepping forward to tell about Michael’s fear that someone had been tampering with his car.

This conversation was had just one day before his death, and to make matters even more strange, it was also recently discovered that the feds visited Hasting’s home the day before the crash as well.

LA Weekly reported that:

Helicopters often circle over the hills, but Hastings believed there were more of them around whenever he was at home, keeping an eye on him. He came to believe his Mercedes was being tampered with. “Nothing I could say could console him,” Thigpen says.

With the evidence of foul play mounting up the mainstream media has went into damage control, even claiming that Hastings was a drug addict just to smear his name.

As Shepard Ambellas asked yesterday, Was Michael Hastings killed by  ”the powers that be”, and then demonized by the mainstream media as a cover?

LOS ANGELES — The official coroner’s report was released for journalist Michael Hastings, who died June 17, after allegedly colliding with a tree at high-speed after loosing control of his vehicle at 4:40am. The crash was said to have been so violent that the engine block was found separated from the vehicle’s chassis, leaving some to speculate that the car exploded before impact.

What is more disturbing about the coroner’s report is how the mainstream media is now “parroting” the story that Hastings was indeed using drugs including meth. This is a typical protocol when trying to defame a credible person. Let’s face it, Hastings was hours away from breaking a major story. Close friends of Hastings and chosen media were notified about before his death via email from Hastings himself that he was on to something “big”.

The report even went on to detail how members Michael Hastings family arrived from New York one day prior to admit him into “rehab”.

According to the report he was believed to be using drugs, including DMT and marijuana.

Was Michael Hastings killed by  ”the powers that be”, then demonized by the mainstream media as a cover?

Was Journalist Michael Hastings a ‘Bud Smoking Tweeker and DMT Addict’?

Coroner"s Report Rules Michael Hastings" Death an Accident

The Los Angeles County coroner’s department concluded its investigation of the fatal Hollywood car crash of investigative journalist Michael Hastings on Tuesday, ruling his death an accident. The report should lay to rest any doubts about Hastings’ death, though it likely won’t satisfy conspiracy theorists like San Diego “investigative journalist” Kimberly Dvorak and others who have suggested that the journalist may have been assassinated or faked his death.

The report ruled the cause of Hastings’ death to be “massive blunt force trauma consistent with a high speed front-end impact to the sole of the right foot and to the front of the torso” after he lost control of his Mercedes. According to interviews conducted by the coroner’s department, family members had been attempting to get Hastings to enter detox after he began using drugs including DMT in the month prior to the accident. Traces of THC and amphetamines were found in Hastings’ blood, but are not believed to have been a factor in his death.

The coroner’s department investigation found no history of suicidal behavior, but the report does mention reckless behavior in Hastings’ past, including a “traffic collision in which decedent collided into a pole several years ago, believed as under the influence at the time, with report decedent had been misusing Ritalin at about this time.” One person told investigators that Hastings “believed he was ‘invincible,’ believing he could jump from a balcony and would be okay.”

Video: Was Michael Hastings Murdered?

Was Michael Hastings murdered?

Yes.

At least according to a report by Hastings’ good friend, Staff Sgt. Joseph Biggs, who received a frantic email hours before Hastings was incinerated after his car supposedly slammed into a tree.

In the email, Hastings describes being investigated by the FBI and needing to go into hiding in order to work on a “big story.”

According to Joseph Biggs, Elise Jordan, the widow of Michael Hastings, not only believes Hastings was murdered, but vows to bring his murderers to justice!

Biggs said the following about the fuming widow:

She’s vowing to take down whoever did this. She’s a fighter.

But didn’t the Los Angeles police department come out within hours stating that there was no foul play? Didn’t the FBI offer a “helping hand” in the accident investigation to help identify Hastings, matching fingerprints they had on file?

Yes and yes.

Although why the FBI were involved when it was merely an accident, why exactly they had Hastings’ fingerprints on file, and how they were able to match fingerprints when Hastings was burned down to the bone is a mystery.

Hastings may or may not have been murdered. But one thing is clear: The narrative of how the accident occurred is a total fabrication.

Here’s how the story goes: On June 18 at 4:30 in the morning, Hastings was traveling at 100 miles an hour in an upper class suburban neighborhood in the 600 block of North Highland Avenue in Los Angeles. Moving at such a high rate of speed, he lost control of the vehicle—a 2013 Mercedes C250 Coupe—and slammed into a palm tree. Upon impact, the car exploded, ejecting the engine and part of the drivetrain several hundred feet, simultaneously bursting into flames.

The claim that Hastings was traveling at 100 miles an hour when he hit the tree is false. This claim was substantiated by a roving local reporter who had a dash cam running. The video shows Hastings’ car blowing through a red light at high speed in a business district several minutes before the crash. The dash cam video is highly suspect. As shown in the above video, the video taken frame-by-frame seems to show an unexplained anomaly, in which the background appears to be in front of the car on one frame.

Whether this video is doctored or not, however, is irrelevant. The vehicle was absolutely not traveling at 100 mph when it hit the tree. There is little damage to the tree or the front of the vehicle, as would be expected from a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, which is probably why they covered up the front of the car with a large sheet once the media began to arrive.  Further, when the engine and drivetrain were ejected, as required by the laws of physics, the engine would be thrown in the general direction the vehicle was traveling. In fact, it was thrown at a ninety degree angle from which the vehicle hit the tree.

If in fact Hastings was murdered—and we are not saying with absolutely certainty that he was—it is likely an explosive device was detonated while Hastings was driving at a normal rate of speed. Or he was placed in the vehicle knocked out or already dead, at which time the bomb was detonated while the vehicle was at rest against the tree.

If Hastings was in the vehicle dead or knocked out while the car was moving, the problem then becomes: how was the vehicle steered toward the tree to make it look like this was the cause of the explosion? As the Huffington Post reported, in interviewing Richard Clarke, a counter terrorism expert under Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and Clinton, stated:

There is reason to believe that intelligence agencies for major powers—including the United States—know how to remotely seize control of a car.

This, however, is not news. Car and Driver magazine reported back in their August 2011 issue that hackers could easily commandeer a vehicle:

Currently, there’s nothing to stop anyone with malicious intent and some computer-programming skills from taking command of your vehicle.

If in fact Hastings was murdered, who did it and why?

Just hours before Hastings’ death, he had contacted WikiLeaks requesting legal counsel, stating that he was being investigated by the FBI, which was substantiated by the email to Joseph Biggs. What hasn’t been generally reported is that Biggs stated in an interview with Fox News that the “big story” Hastings was working on had to do with the CIA, in contradiction to the lie perpetrated by the Los Angeles Times  that he was investigating the David Petraeus-Paula Broadwell-Jill Kelley love triangle story.

This was debunked by Hastings’ widow herself, telling both Biggs and tweeting out a rebuttal.

The “big story” was in fact our own government, an entity that some say is even more powerful than the President of the United States—our own CIA?

Yes, the same CIA who are famous for making people “disappear.”

Further, not only does the email Hastings sent to Staff Sgt. Joseph Biggs contain a reference to the FBI, but the NSA as well!

Was Michael Hastings’ phone tapped? Were they looking at his emails, and did the government find out that Hastings discovered something about the Obama administration that absolutely had to be suppressedso much so that he was murdered?

Hastings had been a thorn in Barack Obama’s side for a long time and had just published a book highly critical of him,  revealing him as an emperor with no clothes. Did the trail of dead bodies that seem to gather around Obama add another victim? Did Barack Hussein Obama’s NSA or CIA, while snooping on every single American, do a little “side job” for him?

Perhaps. Perhaps not.

Michael Hastings Assassinated for Work Uncovering Surveillance State

The journalist Michael Hastings, who died in what authorities have described as a high-speed car crash, was an active member of Project PM, a crowd-sourced research effort to expose government intelligence contractors.

The login screen for Trapwire, software used for intelligence-gathering on U.S. and global citizens and made public in a Wikileaks data dump.

“If you care that the surveillance state is expanding in capabilities and intent without being effectively opposed by the population of the West, you can assist in making this an actionable resource for journalists, activists, and other interested parties,” the Project PM wiki states. “Consider doing a bit of research on the companies and government agencies listed on this wiki, or even adding new topic for investigation by our participants.”

Barrett Brown, the founder of the initiative, was arrested by the FBI and faces up to 105 years in prison. Brown is described as the “brain trust” for the hacktivist group Anonymous.

Two indictments against Brown are for allegedly “threatening of an FBI officer in a YouTube video and the concealing of evidence,” writes Patrick McGuire for Vice.com, and “do not seem worthy of such a harsh sentence, considering a man in Houston recieved only 42 months for threatening to blow up an FBI building, and a former dentist got 18 months for threatening to kill an FBI agent. The third, however, pertains to Barrett Brown’s pasting of a link in an Anonymous IRC chat room to a document full of credit card numbers and their authentication codes that was stolen from the security company Stratfor, in the midst of a hack that released over five million internal emails. Those emails were published to Wikileaks.”

Brown’s Stratfor hack revealed the inner workings of Trapwire software. It purportedly acquires video from far-flung surveillance cameras located in stores, casinos and other businesses around the country and uses sophisticated facial recognition software to identify people of interest captured by ubiquitous cameras numbering in the millions.

Trapwire software is a significant breakthrough for the surveillance state. It was uncovered by security researcher Justin Ferguson. He delved into the massive pile of emails hacked by Brown from Stratfor – the Austin-based firm regarded as a shadow CIA – on Christmas of 2011. In response to Ferguson’s discovery and the Trapwire revelation, Wikileaks was hit with a large scale distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack.

Brown discovered the software produced by Trapwire is owned by Cubic, a San Diego company acquired by Abraxas Corporation. Barrett also uncovered tax returns calling into question Cubic’s denial that it is not affiliated with Trapwire and the software.

Abraxas is run by a former CIA spook, Richard Helms (not to be confused with the CIA director under Nixon). He was also one of the original assignees to its Counter Terrorism Center in the mid-1980s.

Moreover, according to Florida State’s records of corporations, Helms is the director of Ntrepid, a company that won a $ 2.76 million dollar contract from Centcom, the U.S. Central Command. Ntrepid innovated a product called Tartan, a program that can “analyze illicit organizations and less structured social networks by identifying: Ranks of influence within human networks… [and can] end the use of [online] aliases.”

“Clearly they are looking to dismantle the smoke and mirrors that groups like Anonymous maintain, by hanging out in chatrooms where they do not need to identify themselves officially, with many private communications happening at once,” writes McGuire. “This creates a difficult-to-penetrate den, where people can easily hide online. Evidently, Ntrepid is seeking to pull all of that apart with Tartan.”

Michael Hastings’ association with Barrett Brown and his work on Project PM, in addition to his outing a top U.S. general responsible for conducting the war in Afghanistan – a key mantlepiece in the manufactured war on terror – undoubtedly put him at risk and resulted in his assassination.

It can no longer be claimed that Hastings was merely the victim of a car accident. He was specifically targeted for his investigative journalism, most recently stories he was developing on the FBI and the CIA, as we noted earlier today.

Obviously, the intelligence and surveillance state is intimately involved in an effort to eliminate whistleblowers and journalists who get too close to the truth. The murder of Michael Hastings should send a chill down the spine of journalists everywhere, especially those in the alternative media.
