Americas largest gun shop dropped by credit card company

The Hyatt Gun Shop of Charlotte, N.C., has been doing business for the last four years with  a subsidiary of Visa — a key Obama campaign donor — that specializes in credit card transactions.

But the subsidiary, Authorize.net/CyberSource, reportedly has ended its relationship with the nation’s largest gun store for a reason that might get you scratching your head.   

Because the Hyatt Gun Shop sells, well, guns.

The Authorize.net email said that gun sales violated a section of the service agreement it signed with the gun shop, reportedly after Hyatt detailed its sales and products — and, you know, its name – according to the Washington Examiner.

“We’ve never seen anything like this,” said Justin Anderson, Hyatt’s marketing director, who added it took a week and thousands of dollars to line up a “gun friendly” credit card processor for online sales.

The brushoff of Hyatt’s business has sparked a national boycott effort against Authorize.net and parent company CyberSource organized by the website Grass Roots North Carolina. “It looks like the small but noisy anti-gun crowd has gotten to what must be a jelly-spined PR department at CyberSource and Authorize.Net. Either that, or leadership at these companies have simply become anti-gun all on their own,” said the website in announcing the boycott.

Anderson suspects that the company, purchased by Visa in 2010, got cold feet dealing with a leading gun seller and he said that he’s heard of other gun stores being dropped. The company had no immediate comment.

The sudden move comes two weeks after the Washington Navy Yard shootings which were followed by President Obama’s plea for more gun control.

Several Visa executives contributed to the president’s re-election campaign, the Examiner notes, adding that their total was $ 21,780, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Here’s the email notice from Authorize.net:

Authorize.Net LLC (“Authorize.Net”) has determined that the nature of your business constitutes a violation of Section 2.xiv of the Authorize.Net Acceptable Use Guidelines and Sections 3.3 and 11.3 of the Authorize.Net Service Agreement (the “Agreement”). These sections include, but are not limited to, the sale of firearms or any similar product. Accordingly, pursuant to Section 4 of the Acceptable Use Guidelines, your ability to access and use the Authorize.Net Services will be terminated on September 30, 2013.

Largest Strike So Far By Fast-Food Workers Set For Thursday

Organizers say workers at fast-food restaurants in cities across the nation will walk off their jobs Thursday in what’s expected to be the largest such strike so far, The Associated Press writes.

As the wire service adds:

“Thursday’s planned walkouts follow a series of strikes that began last November in New York City, then spread to cities including Chicago, Detroit and Seattle. Workers say they want $ 15 an hour, which would be about $ 31,000 a year for full-time employees. That’s more than double the federal minimum wage, which many fast food workers make, of $ 7.25 an hour, or $ 15,000 a year.”

According to Reuters, “employees of McDonald’s Corp, Wendy’s Restaurants LLC, Burger King Worldwide Inc and others have pledged to walk off their jobs in 50 cities from Boston, Mass., to Alameda, Calif., organizers say. They are expected to be joined by retail employees at stores owned by Macy’s Inc., Sears Holdings Corp. and Dollar Tree Inc. in some cities.”

Thursday on Morning Edition and on The Salt blog, NPR’s Jennifer Ludden reported about the struggle that many restaurant workers have to put food on their own tables.

Saru Jayaraman, co-founder and co-director of the worker advocacy group the Restaurant Opportunities Center, tells NPR that the cost of child care alone can eat up one-third of some restaurant workers’ incomes. She supports a bill to raise the minimum wage to just over $ 10.

But as Jennifer adds, “industry officials say a sharp increase in the minimum wage would kill jobs” by forcing some employers to cut positions.

Largest Lutheran Group Elects 1st Female Leader

The nation’s largest Lutheran group elected its first woman as presiding bishop on Wednesday.

The Rev. Elizabeth Eaton was chosen as head of the liberal-leaning Evangelical Lutheran Church in America during its national legislative meeting in Pittsburgh. Eaton won on the fifth ballot with 600 votes, defeating the incumbent, the Rev. Mark Hanson, who is finishing his second six-year term. Hanson received 287 votes.

Eaton, a bishop from the northeastern Ohio district, is taking over leadership of the more than 4 million-member denomination at a time of major transition. In 2009, the denomination cleared the way for openly gay and lesbian ordination, causing losses in a church that, like some Protestant groups, had already been losing members for years. The Chicago-based denomination has trimmed jobs and restructured while redirecting resources into evangelization, especially to Latinos and other groups.

Eaton, at a news conference after she was elected, urged Lutherans to be welcoming to newcomers in their churches. She insisted the denomination could stay unified despite differences over what the Bible says about same-sex relationships.

“We’re not defined by that single issue,” Eaton said. “We don’t agree on everything in this church, but we do agree on the cross of Christ, and we do agree we’re going to stick together to have that conversation.”

Eaton, a Cleveland native, is bishop of the Northeastern Ohio Synod. She’s a graduate of Harvard Divinity School and the College of Wooster. Her husband is an Episcopal priest, and they have two daughters.

Eaton said she wept during morning worship Wednesday. The balloting had begun the day before, indicating she had a chance to win.

“This is a huge change for me, for my staff, for my family, for my church,” she said. “My mother — everyone in her retirement center now knows she is the mother of the presiding bishop elect.”

Hanson, in brief remarks to reporters, congratulated Eaton and expressed confidence in her leadership.

“This call process was a call process for new leadership,” Hanson said. “In our history we have never looked back. We have always looked ahead.”

Dhaka, Bangladesh (CNN) — Bangladesh’s high court has declared the country’s largest Islamist party, the Jamaat-e-Islami, illegal.

Jamaat is one of two main opposition parties and a constant thorn in the side of the ruling Awami League.

With the declaration, Jamaat will not be able to take part in the country’s upcoming general election — certainly welcome news to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

But such a ruling can also reignite a fresh round of political unrest in the South Asian nation.

Drumbeat gets louder

Jaamat enjoys considerable support, particularly in rural areas. And periodically, it will summon the masses to swarm the capital city, Dhaka, as a reminder.

But in recent months, the drumbeat to ban Jamaat has gotten louder, especially from progressive groups that point to the party’s role during Bangladesh’s struggle for independence in the early 1970s.

Between one million and 3 million people were killed in the nine-month war.

In 2010, Bangladesh set up a court that it called the International Crimes Tribunal to bring to justice those it accused in the massacre.

Among those the court has convicted of crimes against humanity are several top Jamaat leaders.

Jamaat acknowledges that it opposed Bangladesh’s struggle for independence, but it has decried what it calls a smear campaign.

It has also questioned why the ruling Awami League is only now pressing forward on war crimes trials when it didn’t do so while in power during the 1970s and 1990s.

A petition to ban

The court case calling for its ban resulted from a petition filed in 2009 by Bangladesh Tariquat Foundation, a Sufi organization that wants to make Bangladesh a secular nation.

The petition said Jamaat is a religiously-steeped political entity that actively worked to undermine the independence movement.

The Awami League has sided with those calling for a ban.

“We’re examining all possible ways of doing it,” the law minister said in February.

Fear of violence

But the fear of violence igniting from such a ruling is all-too-real.

Every time one of Jamaat’s top leaders have been convicted by the war crimes tribunals, angry Jamaat supporters have clashed with police.

Since February, at least 150 protesters have been killed and at least 2,00 wounded in such clashes, the Human Rights Watch said in a report released Thursday.

The group laid the blame on security personnel using excessive force.
