U.S. Congressman offers free assault weapon to primary supporters

AR-15 gunNEW YORK DAILY NEWS — It seems AR-15s are all the rage this campaign season.

U.S. Rep. Paul Broun, who is running in a primary campaign for U.S. Senate, announced Friday he will give away a AR-15 weapon to a lucky supporter of his campaign.

“How would you like to start off 2014 with a brand new AR-15 for free?” reads a bold line in an email the congressman — who represents the 10th district in Georgia — sent his supporters, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Myanmar’s transition to democracy following five decades of brutal military rule has won widespread international praise, but rights’ groups say little has changed in resource-rich border areas, where the army continues to grapple with stubborn ethnic insurgencies. As in the past, the use of sexual violence against civilians is widespread and systematic, said Tin Tin Nyo, general secretary of the Women’s League of Burma. (AP Photo/Gemunu Amarasinghe, File)

(AP) — A soldier in full uniform saw the 7-year-old in her front yard soon after her parents left to tend to their rice paddies in Myanmar’s restive state of Shan. She said he ordered her inside the family’s bamboo hut.

“He hit me and told me to take off my clothes,” the girl told the tightly packed courtroom in a whisper, as her alleged assailant, Maung Win Htwe, looked on, stone-faced.

“Then … he raped me.”

Rights activists in Myanmar, also known as Burma, say the army continues to use rape as a weapon of war nearly three years after President Thein Sein’s nominally civilian government ended a half-century of brutal military rule. On Tuesday, the Women’s League of Burma released a report documenting more than 100 rapes, almost all in townships plagued by stubborn ethnic insurgencies.

Nearly half were brutal gang rapes, several of the victims were children, and 28 of the women were killed or died from their injuries, said Tin Tin Nyo, the league’s general secretary. She warned that there is little hope for change until the government amends Myanmar’s constitution, which gives the military the right to independently administer all its affairs.

Ye Htut, the government’s top spokesman, did not respond to phone, email and Facebook messages seeking comment.

The report said most of the attacks occurred in border areas, particularly in the states of Shan, where the 7-year-old lives, and Kachin. Perpetrators are rarely, if ever, punished.

Though it handed over formal control of the country, the army continues to heavily influence almost all facets of government, and holds a quarter of all seats in parliament.

Few prominent officials have criticized the military over sexual violence — not even opposition leader and Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, who spent more than 15 years under house arrest under the former ruling junta.

Last month, at a press conference in the main city of Yangon, Suu Kyi was asked if she was concerned about the lack of accountability when it comes to the use of rape as a weapon of war. Instead of criticizing generals, she pointed out that insurgent groups also are responsible for sexual violence.

“This has to do with rule of law. And that has to do with politics, and the position of the army as it is in a particular political structure,” she said. “I think you are well aware of the fact that military armed groups which are not official armies also engage in sexual violence in conditions of conflict.”

Suu Kyi wants to run for president in next year’s elections, but the army has the power to block those ambitions, and she’s showing increasing reluctance to criticize.

The U.S. State Department said it was aware of the report, and urged the Myanmar government and military to investigate and prosecute all allegations of rape and sexual assault.

Spokeswoman Marie Harf said Wednesday that despite “tremendous progress” in Myanmar in the past three years, “significant challenges remain, including further improving the country’s overall human rights situation.”

Tin Tin Nyo said the cases her group was able to document are “just the tip of the iceberg.” She said the information gathered for the report comes almost exclusively from victims or witnesses dared to speak out, and that researchers were unable to reach some areas because of security concerns.

The league’s report, compiled by 12 member organizations spread across the country, said in most cases attacks were carried out by soldiers who were carrying weapons and dressed in uniform. They included officers — such as captains, commanders and majors — and at least one major general.

Many of the rapes were carried out in front of the woman’s husband or others, seemingly as a way to make communities too fearful to support ethnic militias.

“These crimes are more than random, isolated acts by rogue soldiers,” the report’s authors wrote. “Their widespread and systematic nature indicates a structural pattern: Rape is still used as an instrument of war and oppression.”

The government sees on-and-off conflicts along northern and eastern borders, where armed ethnic groups have long battled for greater autonomy, as one of the biggest obstacles to a planned nationwide cease-fire agreement. The region is home to several strategic development projects, including a gas pipeline that stretches to China’s Yunnan province.

The report said most cases never make it to court, and those that come before military tribunals usually result in immediate acquittals.

The alleged Nov. 11 attack on the 7-year-old is an exception. The soldier accused of raping her, Maung Win Htwe, was ordered to go to trial in a civilian court.

Lawyer Brang Di said the first witnesses appeared at Lashio District Court last week, including the girl, her parents and neighbors in a tiny Shan village near Thein Ni town.

Brang Di said authorities agreed to try Maung Win Htwe in a civilian court only after a loud public outcry. “We are trying our best to have a fair judgment,” he said.

NSA’s spy gear: ANT is a secret weapon that hacks electronics worldwide

3 hours ago | Technology, US | Posted by Joshua Cook

From Samsung smartphones to Dell computers, Americans are being tracked by the NSA via electronic spy gear. Last week Snowden warned Americans in a Christmas message that big brother is watching. “We have sensors in our pockets that track us everywhere we go,” he said. Now Snowden has leaked the document that proves his claim.

One of the documents Snowden has reportedly leaked is a product catalog for spies and hackers at the NSA.

NSA hacksAccording to SPIEGEL, “a product catalog reveals that an NSA division called ANT (Access Network Technology) has burrowed its way into nearly all the security architecture made by the major players in the industry — including American global market leader Cisco and its Chinese competitor Huawei, but also producers of mass-market goods, such as US computer-maker Dell.”

The article claims that ANT specialists at the NSA’s department for Tailored Access Operations can remotely access, monitor, and manipulate data in electronics around the world. Electronic devices that cannot be attacked via the internet are intercepted and manually bugged. In some cases, the NSA actually intercepts packages to put “backdoors” in electronics.

SPIEGEL explains, “These NSA agents, who specialize in secret back doors, are able to keep an eye on all levels of our digital lives — from computing centers to individual computers, from laptops to mobile phones. For nearly every lock, ANT seems to have a key in its toolbox. And no matter what walls companies erect, the NSA’s specialists seem already to have gotten past them.”

ANT specialists can choose spy gear from a 50-page catalog to assist them in spying operations.

Some of the listed items are:

  • Rigged monitor cable – $ 30 – Allows “TAO personnel to see what is displayed on the targeted monitor.

  • GSM base station – $ 40,000 – Mimics mobile phone tower and allows cell phone monitoring.

  • Computer bugging devices (50 pack) - $ 1 million – Disguised as normal USB plugs, it is capable of sending and receiving data via radio undetected.

SPIEGEL states that these American technology companies are not aware that the NSA has hacked their systems.

“Cisco does not work with any government to modify our equipment, nor to implement any so-called security ‘back doors’ in our products,” the company said in a statement.

Last week, Ben Swann, reported that U.S. District Judge William H. Pauley III ruled it was legal for the NSA to collect bulk meta-data of American’s phone records.

“One could argue that the ruling by a Federal Judge that the NSA spying program is legal was not only a horrible ruling, but based on his personal view and not grounded at all in law,” Swann said.

The lawsuit argues that the phone surveillance program violates both the First Amendment rights of free speech and association, and the Fourth Amendment’s protections against unreasonable searches and seizures. At least three other lawsuits challenging bulk data collection are pending in other federal courts. Attorney Brett Max Kaufman said the ACLU will appeal Friday’s ruling.

The newly leaked documents are striking, though. As the NSA revelations keep on coming, it could provide more evidence for civil liberty lawsuits.

CA Deputies Shoot, Kill 13-Year-Old Carrying Fake "Assault Weapon"

On October 22, a 13-year old boy was shot and killed by Santa Rosa, California Sheriff’s deputies after they saw him walking down the street with what they thought to be an “assault rifle.”

According to the Associated Press, the deputies ordered the boy to drop the weapon and eventually “fired several rounds.” The boy fell to the ground and was handcuffed, after which the deputies “began administering first aid.”

The 13-year old was pronounced dead at the scene. It turns out his “assault weapon” was only a replica. He also had a “plastic handgun in his waistband.”

The names of the deputies have not been released.

Wendy Davis" Secret Weapon: GOP"s Misogyny

(Newser) – Wendy Davis officially announced her candidacy for governor of Texas yesterday, and Judith Warner thinks she’s exactly what Democrats need—and not just because of her filibuster-generated fame. “Blonde, strikingly pretty, outspoken, and female, Davis is, to put it bluntly, invaluable as bait,” Warner writes at Time. “In her short tenure on the national scene, she has elicited an almost Pavlovian response from anti-woman blowhards.” Erick Erickson, for example, once called her “Abortion Barbie.”

“As a misogyny magnet,” Warner thinks Davis will be “the gift that keeps on giving.” Her hair, clothes, and pink sneakers, coupled with her abortion stance and unmarried status, “sexualize her to a degree that’s unusual for female politician” and “open her up to a very specific, very ugly form of woman-hate.” And that’s great for Democrats, who rode “a consistent pattern of gender-based disrespect” to victory last year. Barack Obama won among women by 12 points. “Message: we Barbies are no dummies.” Click for the full column.

Chemical Weapon Expert Opinion on the UN Report on Syria

chemical_weapon1

While investigating the UN Report on chemical weapons (CW) use in Ghouta, Syria, we sought a multitude of opinions from experts and others who offered insightful observations. We published our findings in an article entitled: Questions Plague UN Report on Syria.

To learn more about Sarin and other nerve gases used in warfare, you would be hard pressed to find any better hands-on experience than in Iran, a country that suffered directly – and repeatedly – from Iraq’s use of CWs during the 1980-88 war between the two countries.

In Iran itself, there are few as qualified to speak about Sarin and other nerve gases as Dr. Abbas Foroutan, whose 2004 articles were reviewed in Neurology by Col. Jonathan Newmark of the Chemical Casualty Care Division, US Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense.

The reviewer refers to Dr. Foroutan’s work as “the only firsthand clinical descriptions of battlefield nerve agent casualties in the world literature” and is viewed as a valuable contribution to the US and NATO understanding of the treatment of casualties in chemical warfare:

“Foroutan’s lessons learned reassure us that a robust medical evacuation system, coupled with timely and appropriate medical care of nerve agent poisoning, will save many more lives on future battlefields.”

Upon our request, Dr. Foroutan reviewed the UN Report on Syria and provided us with some critical insights, addressing the issues of environmental and human sampling conducted by the UN investigators in Ghouta.

Based on his unique experience with casualties of nerve gas, Dr. Foroutan pointed out stark symptom irregularities displayed by Ghouta patients:

1. Sarin gas does not cause inflammation in the eye. We have observed many cases during Iraq’s war against Iran and victims presented with only brief and temporary redness in the eye. Here, 22% of cases still displayed inflammation after 5-7 days.

2. Miosis [constricted pupils] has been observed in 14% of cases while disorientation has been seen in 39% of the cases. This ratio is not logical. It is obligatory that complete raw data charts of the patients be published so that the correlation index between signs and symptoms of this case and other cases be calculated.

3. Regarding the 19% convulsion report: the reports from the victims themselves are not acceptable as they would have been unconscious at the time of convulsion. Unless others report the convulsion in the victim, these reports are otherwise unreliable.

4. The prescription of Atropine: this medicine is the most essential antidote for Sarin exposures and if a large amount of it is taken quickly and intravenously, it will save the patient . Rapid recovery of a severe case with high dose of atropine suggest the patient was exposed to a substance similar to nerve gas[sarin]. Unfortunately the information given is very incomplete and it has not been noted how exactly the patients have reacted to this cure.

5. Mentioning the vital signs like the pulse rate and blood pressure, which because of sarin classically become slow and low and subsequently atropine raises it up, is also an important diagnostic sign which unfortunately has not been recorded in the patients documents. Another important sign is auscultation of “wheezing” in the victims lungs, similar to the noise coming from an asthmatic patient, has not been mentioned. This neglection is abnormal.

6. Activity of an enzyme called “acetylcholinesterase” in the plasma and red blood cells will reduced immensely with nerve gases like sarin; and will reactivate (re-synthesize) after weeks until it becomes normal. Sarin is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor substance. Experts across the world are well informed of the importance of this lab data[reporting enzyme activity]. During the holy defense (Iran Iraq war) we would measure it in the frontline emergency center as a routine diagnostic test. The importance is that in moderate to severe cases, it decreases heavily without exception. Why has this examination not been done?

7. The claim of the identification of sarin molecules a week later in the biological samples needs an exact report of methodology of measurement for other experts of the world because of the high chance of technical error.

8. Regarding the environmental samples: according to the pictures, a lot of the places have been under the sunlight and due to the fact that sarin is very volatile, the claim of sarin detection should be accompanied with more description by the experts.

Overall in my view this report should be received/accepted medically with great caution and should be observed again by a team of international expert clinicians. My intention is not the denial of sarin but at least from the clinical point of view, the evidences of this report are not enough to prove the existence of a nerve gas [sarin] in this incident.

Dr. Foroutan also brought up a very important point about the UN’s assumption of Sarin in its testing, which can lead to false positives. In Appendix 7 of the UN Report, a notable number of the samples tested by two separate labs register different results:

“There is a possibility of a false positive recognition/diagnosis of sarin and by-products caused by natural decomposition and impurities with the primary gas.

An important point is that it seems the team has set up its experiment methods according to the pre-assumption that sarin had been used.

That is why it should be requested that all of the experiment/lab measurements should be published with the details of sample preparation and analysis methods and also even the pictures and files of the curve from the analysis devices.

During the imposed war (Iran Iraq war) a case of poisoning of the Iranian soldiers by Mycotoxins was reported by a credible lab in Belgium. They were definitely found in the urine and plasma samples but later we were informed that it was a false positive. In the UN study after the war it was proven that Iraq had no activity regarding the production of mycotoxins.”

I was informed that the above observations “were discussed in a medical gathering at the Shaheed Beheshti University of Medical Sciences led by Professor Abbas Foroutan.”

While we were fortunate to reach Dr. Foroutan for his insights on the UN Report, I am publishing this information now because he took the trouble of writing it out and sending it to me via an academic colleague who translated his comments in their entirety.

U.S. Armed Forces Dropped 388,000 Tons Of Napalm On Vietnam. Napalm Is A CHEMICAL WEAPON

Ingenious Press

As a psychotic lobby within the U.S. government is willing to thrust our nation into a potential World War III, through fabricated evidence of a small-time chemical weapons attack from the ‘Syrian Regime’, they seem to forget about America’s past use of chemical weapons on a much more grand scale. The liberal usage of the chemical weapon Napalm during the Vietnam War was particularly notorious and caused indescribable suffering.

Napalm was developed in 1943, in a secret laboratory at Harvard University, by a team led by chemist Louis Fieser. It was first used in the later years of World War II, then later during the Korean War and most extensively during the Vietnam conflict, where an incredible 388,000 tons of the ordinance was dropped on the country. Even U.S. soldiers were occasionally victims of misfired bombs, due to the large damage area of nearly 2,500 square yards and firestorms with self-perpetuating winds of over 100 km/h.

One of the main anti-personnel features of napalm is that it sticks to human skin, with no practical method for removal of the burning substance. “Napalm is the most terrible pain you can imagine,” said Kim Phúc, a napalm bombing survivor known from a famous Vietnam War photograph. “Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius (212°F). Napalm generates temperatures of 800 to 1,200 degrees Celsius (1,500-2,200°F).”

New Anti-Obesity Weapon: Skinny People"s Poo?

(Newser) – The size of many people’s bellies may be determined by some of the billions of bacteria living in their guts, according to new research. Scientists took pairs of human twins—one twin obese, the other thin—and transplanted some of their gut bacteria into young mice that had been raised microbe-free, the BBC reports. When they were fed the same diet, the mice with the obese twin’s bacteria grew fat while those with the lean twin’s bacteria did not. And when the mice were exposed to each other’s bacteria in a “battle of the microbes,” the obese mice grew lean but the thin mice did not gain weight.

Much more research remains to be done, but experts say the “weird and wonderful” finding that gut bacteria can cause obesity could lead to new therapies in the not-too-distant future, reports the New York Times. Since people, unlike mice, don’t tend to eat each other’s droppings, a fecal transplant would be the simplest way of transferring thin people’s bacteria to obese people. Such transplants are already used to treat a persistent gut infection, CBS notes, but the lead researcher says there is a less nauseating alternative: Tailoring combinations of bacteria to suit patients, then growing them in a lab and turning them into pills. And getting the right combination of bacteria could be very important—another group of researchers working with microbes in mice guts found that transplants could result in major personality changes.

China "hacks" US weapon system plans

A US Black Hawk helicopter in Ghazni, Afghanistan 17 May 2013Black Hawk helicopters were cited as one of the weapons systems compromised by hackers

Chinese hackers have accessed designs for more than two dozen US weapons systems, a US newspaper has reported.

Designs for combat aircraft, ships and missile defences were among those compromised, a Pentagon paper found, the Washington Post reported.

A public version of the same Defense Science Board report said in January that the US was unprepared for a full-scale cyber attack.

The Board did not return requests for comment from the BBC.

The Washington Post report comes as Australia discloses Chinese hackers stole floor plans for the new headquarters of its domestic intelligence agency.

The compromised US designs include those for advanced Patriot missile systems called PAC-3, an Army anti-missile system known as Thaad, and the Navy’s Aegis ballistic-missile defence system, according to the Washington Post.

The F/A-18 fighter jet, V-22 Osprey aircraft, Black Hawk helicopter and the Navy’s new Littoral Combat Ship were also compromised.

The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the most expensive weapons system ever built, was also cited on the list.

The reports do not describe the extent of the theft, but correspondents say the hack could give China information that may be used against the US in the event of a potential future conflict.
