Mysterious UFO Lights Spotted Over Okinawa

At approximately 9:00pm on 23 January, reports started coming into the Okinawa Times about a strange array of lights over their capital city Naha. Japan’s Self Defense Force and astronomical experts are without answer, yet witness accounts and videos claim a dozen or so bright orange lights appearing to hang and shift around in the sky could be see in the area.

The Japan Air Self Defense Force said that all their training exercises had finished at 7:20pm on that day and they never run exercises at such an hour as this phenomenon was said to occur.

Witnesses from the areas around Naha claimed to see “very bright lights moving in a curve, so I think it wasn’t an airplane,” and “10 lights moving until they gathered together and disappeared.”

Takeshi Miyaji, Director of Ishigaki Island Observatory felt that the phenomenon was “not astronomical,” observing that these lights appeared to hang in the air. Typical meteorites would streak across the sky at great speeds before burning out. However, eye-witness reports claim that these particular lights seemed to float around for about 15 minutes before disappearing.

Judging by the video, those lights kind of seem like flares they way they first appear high and then look as if they are gently descending before fading out. Then again, if that were the case, you’d also think that residents of Okinawa and especially those working for the Okinawa Times would be no strangers to such routine testing.

As with any mystery video of this nature, it’s all up to the viewer to decide.

Stunning images of the Northern Lights have been snapped in Wales – and there will be another chance to see the spectacle.

Kim Price took the photos near her home in Llangollen, Denbighshire, on Thursday night when she headed out to view the aurora borealis – which are normally only visible in the Arctic.

The wedding photographer told Sky News she saw faint green lights above Valle Crucis Abbey – but had no idea what she had captured until she got home and downloaded them on to her computer.

“I was so delighted when I saw them, I had no idea how lucky I’d been. I’m absolutely amazed,” she said.

“It was quite spooky up there near the abbey, but it was a very clear night with no air pollution and I thought there might be a good chance of seeing the northern lights.”

Ms Price, 48, added: “I could see streaks in the sky, but the colours were very faint, and I was using long exposure which I’d never really tried before.

“Things that you can’t see with the naked eye pick up loads of detail because it takes 30 seconds to take, so I had no idea how amazing the photos were until I got home to the computer screen.”

Scientists say the natural light display came as far south as the M4 corridor on Thursday night.

But the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting a much stronger display tonight – with an 85% chance of activity.

They appear as shimmering green waves of light when atoms in the Earth’s high-altitude atmosphere collide with energetic charged particles from the sun.

Joe Kunches, from The Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) in Colorado, said: “The geomagnetic storm that drives the aurora structure south is beginning right now.

“We’re not sure how strong the storm will be but if it follows predictions there’s a good chance of seeing it in southern Britain.”

The SWPC predicted that the displays measured on what is called the KP Index could rise from a reading of one, which makes it visible in northern Scandinavia, to a reading of seven, visible in Wales and England.

A key factor in viewing the lights again this evening will be how clear the skies are.

Sky News weather producer Christopher England said: “Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland will have just a few coastal showers this evening.

“That rain will largely clear overnight, leaving just a few sporadic outbreaks over the South East by morning.”

LONDON—Flaring of gas associated with oil production has long been a contentious issue: it not only releases millions of tons of harmful greenhouse gas into the atmosphere but it’s also a chronic waste of a valuable energy resource.

Considerable progress has been made over recent years in reducing flaring: the World Bank estimates that between 2005 and 2011 there was a 20% drop in flaring worldwide. But in North Dakota, one of the pivotal regions driving the boom in US shale oil and gas production, flaring is very much in fashion.

A new report says flaring in North Dakota – now visible from space – has doubled over the past two years, with gas worth approximately $ 1 bn literally going up in smoke in 2012.

“Over the course of 2012, natural gas flaring in North Dakota emitted 4.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, equivalent to the annual emissions of approximately one million cars”, say the report’s authors.

The report, Flaring Up, is produced by Ceres, a US organisation promoting more sustainable business practices. It says nearly 30% of North Dakota gas is at present being burned off each month as a byproduct of oil production: as a result, the US has now joined Russia, Nigeria and Iraq among the world’s top 10 flaring countries.

North Dakota, a predominantly farming area and traditionally one of the less developed regions in the US, has seen its economic fortunes radically change in recent years.

Technological advances such as directional drilling and hydraulic fracturing – or fracking – have unlocked vast deposits of shale gas and oil in the Bakken area in the state’s north-west. Early last year North Dakota surpassed Alaska to become the second largest oil-producing state in the US – after Texas.

Oil production has multiplied 40 times since 2007, with production rising from 18,500 barrels per day (bpd) to 760,000 bpd. North Dakota’s economy is now growing far faster than anywhere else in the US: the population – and the crime rate – are also on the up.

The report gives two main reasons for the upsurge in flaring. As oil commands a far higher price than gas, companies investing in shale-based energy focus on oil.

“A large differential between the prices for oil and gas acts as a deterrent for developers to invest capital in natural gas utilization”, says the study.

Also, natural gas needs its own infrastructure in order to be collected and put on the market. Gas pipelines and other facilities are undeveloped in North Dakota compared with other gas-producing states.

And North Dakota’s flaring regulations are unusually permissive, says the report, when compared with other resource-rich states such as Texas, California or Alaska.

“In the absence of a strong regulatory framework that prohibits flaring, companies working with a limited amount of capital (which is to say all companies) have a strong incentive to put their capital toward oil production, given its higher return relative to natural gas.”

Some exploration companies, pressured by investors worried about both the environmental and financial impact of flaring, have agreed to limit or stop burning off gas.

A recent rise in natural gas prices might give an incentive to build the necessary infrastructure for capturing gas. Yet the emphasis is still very much on exploiting far more financially attractive oil resources.

The World Bank estimates that flaring around the world accounts for the release of 400 million tons of CO2 each year. The World Petroleum Council says the amount of gas flared annually is worth about $ 25 bn in energy terms and is equivalent in volume to approximately 5% of total global natural gas production.

Because the Cruz-Biden talk-a-thon does mark a kind of unofficial start to the 2016 rubber chicken circuit. And, more importantly, both men currently have the best claim on their party’s id, if not its nomination.

Wildly different in style and separated by a generation in age, Cruz and Biden share a gift for the stump speech and for knowing what their side wants to hear. Under a different sort of “Friday Night Lights,” they give us the mood of the party bases in May 2013.

It remains to be seen whether Cruz’s keynote speech represents an early step toward seeking the presidency.

What it was, for now, was one more successful stop on the rubber-chicken circuit for a Republican who has become a master of political dinner theater with an act that should give real pause to party bigwigs who think a remodeled GOP 2.0 is just around the corner.

Beginning with the tale of how two South Carolina-born officers, William Travis and James Bonham, helped lead the doomed fight at the Alamo, Cruz expressed his gratitude to the Palmetto State.

“Thank you for the support South Carolina has given, then and now, as we fight side by side,” said Cruz, who also compared conservative former Sen. Jim DeMint to the legendary American revolutionary known as the Swamp Fox.

It was the bill of particulars against Obama that really got Cruz – and the Silver Elephant attendees – going in earnest.
