Mass shooting kills four Native Americans in northern California

Four people are dead and another two are injured after a woman began shooting inside a Native American tribal office in northern California, according to local law enforcement officials.

Four people are dead and another two are injured after a woman began shooting inside a Native American tribal office in northern California, according to local law enforcement officials.

The incident began Thursday afternoon in Alturas, California, where alleged shooter Sheri Lash, 44, was attending a meeting concerning her eviction when she reportedly opened fire. Around 3:30 p.m., police say Lash began “systematically shooting individuals” at the Cedarville Rancheria tribal office, expending all her ammunition and hitting six people.

Alturas Police Chief Ken Barnes told local ABC affiliate KRCR that after Lash ran out of bullets, she picked up a butcher knife from the kitchen and stabbed one of the individuals. She was reportedly found outside by police, running with a knife in her hand, and was quickly detained with the help of an office employee. Officials claimed two semiautomatic handguns were found at the scene.

According to Reuters, Lash is currently being held in police custody. She has been charged on counts of homicide, attempted murder, child endangerment, and brandishing a weapon.

Among the victims were two women, 19 and 45 years old, and two men, aged 30 and 50. All four were members of the Rancheria tribe, and one of the male victims was the current tribal leader. The two others who were injured – one of whom was shot multiple times and possibly stabbed – were transferred to local hospitals, where they were placed in critical condition.

Names of the victims were not made public, while autopsies on the deceased are scheduled for Friday.

“This is like nothing I have had to deal with in my 25 years of being with the city of Alturas,” Barnes told another ABC affiliate, News 10. “It’s just tragic.”

Police were apparently notified of the shooting when an individual managed to escape the Rancheria office, covered in blood, and made their way to authorities.

The Cedarville Rancheria is a federally recognized tribe with 35 members, according to the organization’s website. The tribe encompasses 26 acres of land in on northern California, and was meeting to consider the eviction of Lash and her son, though the reasons for such action are unclear.

“We’re trying to get this thing resolved as quick as possible,” Barnes said to News 10. “So it’s, it’s a huge impact on our community.”

Northern Lights Pictured Shining On UK

Stunning images of the Northern Lights have been snapped in Wales – and there will be another chance to see the spectacle.

Llangollen, Denbighshire, Wales Kim Price captured this scene over the ruins of Valle Crucis Abbey

Kim Price took the photos near her home in Llangollen, Denbighshire, on Thursday night when she headed out to view the aurora borealis – which are normally only visible in the Arctic.

The wedding photographer told Sky News she saw faint green lights above Valle Crucis Abbey – but had no idea what she had captured until she got home and downloaded them on to her computer.

“I was so delighted when I saw them, I had no idea how lucky I’d been. I’m absolutely amazed,” she said.

“It was quite spooky up there near the abbey, but it was a very clear night with no air pollution and I thought there might be a good chance of seeing the northern lights.”

Llangollen, Denbighshire, Wales The aurora borealis are normally only seen in the Arctic

Ms Price, 48, added: “I could see streaks in the sky, but the colours were very faint, and I was using long exposure which I’d never really tried before.

“Things that you can’t see with the naked eye pick up loads of detail because it takes 30 seconds to take, so I had no idea how amazing the photos were until I got home to the computer screen.”

Scientists say the natural light display came as far south as the M4 corridor on Thursday night.

Llangollen, Denbighshire, Wales Kim Price took the shots using a Canon EOS 7D camera and 30-second exposure

But the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting a much stronger display tonight – with an 85% chance of activity.

They appear as shimmering green waves of light when atoms in the Earth’s high-altitude atmosphere collide with energetic charged particles from the sun.

Joe Kunches, from The Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) in Colorado, said: “The geomagnetic storm that drives the aurora structure south is beginning right now.

“We’re not sure how strong the storm will be but if it follows predictions there’s a good chance of seeing it in southern Britain.”

The SWPC predicted that the displays measured on what is called the KP Index could rise from a reading of one, which makes it visible in northern Scandinavia, to a reading of seven, visible in Wales and England.

A key factor in viewing the lights again this evening will be how clear the skies are.

Sky News weather producer Christopher England said: “Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland will have just a few coastal showers this evening.

“That rain will largely clear overnight, leaving just a few sporadic outbreaks over the South East by morning.”

BRAITHWAITE, La. (AP) — Tropical Storm Karen continued chugging toward the northern Gulf Coast on Saturday, with forecasters predicting rain, potential flooding and a decrease in speed later in the day.

The National Hurricane Center reported early Saturday that Karen’s maximum sustained winds had dropped to 40 mph, making it a weak tropical storm. It was moving north at 10 mph (16 kph), and center forecasters said in their advisory that they expect Karen to decrease in speed later Saturday and turn toward the northeast.

A tropical storm warning is in effect from Morgan City to the mouth of the Pearl River, which forms part of the border between Louisiana and Mississippi. A tropical storm watch covers the New Orleans area and a stretch from east of the Pearl River’s mouth to Indian Pass, Fla.

Forecasters expect the storm’s center to be in the warning area Saturday night or Sunday morning, and they note that an increase in speed is possible Sunday. Rain accumulations of 1 to 3 inches over the central Gulf Coast and southeastern U.S. are possible through Monday night, with isolated totals up to 6 inches.

At the hurricane center in Miami, forecasters said the storm no longer had a chance of strengthening into a hurricane.

Karen began losing some of its punch late Friday, after a busy day of preparations along the Gulf Coast for the storm. Karen is a late-arriving worry in what had been a slow hurricane season in the U.S. Karen would be the second named storm to make landfall in the U.S. — the first since Tropical Storm Andrea hit Florida in June.

Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida had each declared a state of emergency as of Friday. The Federal Emergency Management Agency and Interior Department recalled workers, furloughed because of the government shutdown, to deal with the storm and help state and local agencies.

And in low-lying areas of southeast Louisiana, pickups hauling boat trailers and flatbed trucks laden with crab traps evacuated. Officials in Plaquemines Parish, La., an area inundated last year by slow-moving Hurricane Isaac in 2012, ordered mandatory evacuations Friday, mostly on the east bank of the Mississippi River. The parish, home to oil field service businesses and fishing marinas, juts out into the Gulf of Mexico from the state’s southeastern tip.

Guy Laigast, head of emergency operations in the parish, noted an earlier forecast with a westward tick. “The jog to the west has got us concerned that wind will be piling water on the east bank levees,” he said. Overtopping was not expected, but the evacuations were ordered as a precaution, he said.

Evacuations also were ordered on Grand Isle, a barrier island community where the only route out is a single flood-prone highway, and in coastal Lafourche Parish.

Traffic at the mouth of the Mississippi River was stopped Friday in advance of the storm, and passengers aboard two Carnival Cruise ships bound for weekend arrivals in New Orleans were told they may not arrive until Monday.

In New Orleans, Sheriff Marlin Gusman announced that he had moved more than 400 inmates from temporary tent facilities to safer state lockups as a precaution. Mayor Mitch Landrieu said a city emergency operations center would begin around-the-clock operations Friday evening.

In the Plaquemines Parish town of Braithwaite, swamped last year by Isaac, Blake Miller and others hauled paintings and valuables to the upper floor of the plantation home he owns.

“We came out to move the antique furniture upstairs, board up the shutters, get ready. We don’t know for what, we hope not much, but we have to be ready,” Miller said.

“I’m not expecting another Isaac, but we could get some water, so I’m moving what I can,” said Larry Bartron, a fisherman who stowed nets and fishing gear in his 26-foot fishing boat, which he planned to move inside the levee system.

Along the Mississippi, Alabama and Florida coasts, officials urged caution. Workers moved lifeguard stands to higher ground in Alabama and Florida. But there were few signs of concern among visitors to Florida’s Pensacola Beach, where visitors frolicked in the surf beneath a pier and local surfer Stephen Benz took advantage of big waves.

“There is probably about 30 days a year that are really good and you really have to watch the weather, have the availability and be able to jump at a moment’s notice,” Benz said.

Surfers took advantage of the waves at Dauphin Island, Ala., as well. And, across Mobile Bay, pastor Chris Fowler said the surf at Orange Beach was unusually large but didn’t appear to be eroding the white sand.

“Right now I’m looking at some really gargantuan waves, probably six or 7 feet high,” Fowler said.

Gunmen shoot dead nine policemen in northern Iraq

MOSUL, Iraq | Wed Jul 24, 2013 6:06am EDT

MOSUL, Iraq (Reuters) – Militants riding on pick-up trucks opened fire on a checkpoint in northern Iraq on Wednesday, killing nine policemen, police said.

The attack took place in Shura, 50 km (35 miles) south of Mosul, Iraq’s third largest city and capital of the Sunni-dominated Nineveh province, where al Qaeda has been regrouping.

The gunmen showered the checkpoint with a hail of bullets from several directions. An ambulance that rushed to the scene was hit by a bomb that had been planted on the road beforehand, wounding the driver and a nurse, police said.

Sunni Islamist militants have been regaining momentum in their insurgency against the Shi’ite-led government in recent months, striking on an almost daily basis.

Iraq’s steadily deteriorating security was highlighted by a mass jailbreak near the capital on Sunday when around 500 convicts, including senior al Qaeda operatives, escaped after militants attacked two prisons.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, which was formed through a merger between al Qaeda’s Syrian and Iraqi branches, claimed responsibility for the raids and said it had freed its jailed comrades after months of preparation.

One security official told Reuters on Tuesday that some of the escaped inmates were heading to Syria to join the ranks of the mainly Sunni rebels fighting to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad, whose Alawite sect derives from Shi’ite Islam.

Sectarian tensions across the region have been inflamed by the Syrian civil war, which has also drawn in Shi’ite fighters from Iraq.

More than 720 people have been killed in militant attacks in Iraq so far in July, according to violence monitoring group Iraq Body Count.

Muslims and Buddhists clash in northern Myanmar

YANGON | Tue May 28, 2013 1:17pm EDT

YANGON (Reuters) – Muslims and Buddhists clashed in Myanmar’s northern city of Lashio on Tuesday, witnesses said, as a wave of sectarian violence reached a mountainous region near China’s border.

Phone lines were down in the city of about 131,000 people and the extent of the violence was unclear. Witnesses reported several large fires and said a mosque and Buddhist monastery appear to have been torched.

The violence followed unrest between Muslims and Buddhists in other parts of Myanmar over the past year, including fighting in the central city of Meikhtila in March that killed at least 44 people, mostly Muslims, and razed several Muslim neighborhoods. About 12,000 people lost their homes.

Lashio, capital of Shan State, had been spared from the religious unrest. Known for its strong Chinese influence, it is about 190 km (120 miles) from Muse, a city on China’s border.

Hajji Aung Lwin, a Muslim man from a village on the outskirts of Lashio, said the fighting appeared to have begun after a violent quarrel between a Muslim man and a Buddhist woman. After police detained the man, local Buddhists surrounded the police station and demanded he be handed over, he said.

The mob then tried to set Myoma Mosque, near Lashio market, on fire, he said. A second witness reporting seeing flames in the city and a large building on fire.

Sectarian clashes between Buddhists and Muslims, who make up about 5 percent of the population in the Buddhist-majority country, have erupted several times since a quasi-civilian government took power in March 2011 after five decades of military dictatorship.

The most serious attacks took place in Rakhine State in the west in June and October last year, when Buddhists fought against Rohingya Muslims, who are denied citizenship by Myanmar and seen by many in the country as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. At least 192 people were killed.
