Mass shooting kills four Native Americans in northern California

Four people are dead and another two are injured after a woman began shooting inside a Native American tribal office in northern California, according to local law enforcement officials.

Four people are dead and another two are injured after a woman began shooting inside a Native American tribal office in northern California, according to local law enforcement officials.

The incident began Thursday afternoon in Alturas, California, where alleged shooter Sheri Lash, 44, was attending a meeting concerning her eviction when she reportedly opened fire. Around 3:30 p.m., police say Lash began “systematically shooting individuals” at the Cedarville Rancheria tribal office, expending all her ammunition and hitting six people.

Alturas Police Chief Ken Barnes told local ABC affiliate KRCR that after Lash ran out of bullets, she picked up a butcher knife from the kitchen and stabbed one of the individuals. She was reportedly found outside by police, running with a knife in her hand, and was quickly detained with the help of an office employee. Officials claimed two semiautomatic handguns were found at the scene.

According to Reuters, Lash is currently being held in police custody. She has been charged on counts of homicide, attempted murder, child endangerment, and brandishing a weapon.

Among the victims were two women, 19 and 45 years old, and two men, aged 30 and 50. All four were members of the Rancheria tribe, and one of the male victims was the current tribal leader. The two others who were injured – one of whom was shot multiple times and possibly stabbed – were transferred to local hospitals, where they were placed in critical condition.

Names of the victims were not made public, while autopsies on the deceased are scheduled for Friday.

“This is like nothing I have had to deal with in my 25 years of being with the city of Alturas,” Barnes told another ABC affiliate, News 10. “It’s just tragic.”

Police were apparently notified of the shooting when an individual managed to escape the Rancheria office, covered in blood, and made their way to authorities.

The Cedarville Rancheria is a federally recognized tribe with 35 members, according to the organization’s website. The tribe encompasses 26 acres of land in on northern California, and was meeting to consider the eviction of Lash and her son, though the reasons for such action are unclear.

“We’re trying to get this thing resolved as quick as possible,” Barnes said to News 10. “So it’s, it’s a huge impact on our community.”

Use of NSA metadata to find drone targets kills civilians – Greenwald

NSA headquarters. Image from https://firstlook.org

The US is relying upon NSA metadata to identify targets for drone strikes, reports the Intercept. A former NSA operative said the tactic is flawed and the agency targets phones “in the hopes that the person on the other end of the missile is the bad guy.”

Citing documents leaked by Edward Snowden and testimonies from former Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) members, Glen Greenwald and colleague Jeremy Scahill have revealed the extent which the US military is using NSA intel to establish targets for drone strikes in an article in the Intercept.

The most common tactic employed by the NSA is known as ‘geolocation’, which entails locking on to the SIM card or handset of a suspected terrorist. A former drone sensor operator with the US Air Force, Brandon Bryant, told the Intercept that using the metadata led to inaccuracies that killed civilians.

The NSA uses a program called Geo Cell to follow potential targets and often do not verify whether the carrier of the phone is the intended target of the strike.

“It’s really like we’re targeting a cell phone. We’re not going after people – we’re going after their phones, in the hopes that the person on the other end of that missile is the bad guy,”
Bryant told the Intercept – the nascent news site created by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar to “to hold the most powerful governmental and corporate factions accountable.”

Over the past five years the NSA “has played an increasingly central role in drone killing,” but the growing reliance on metadata to find insurgents is also targeting civilians. The analysis of the electronic surveillance leaves a lot of room for error and can kill “the wrong people.”

Moreover, the lack of operatives on the ground in Afghanistan, Yemen and Pakistan means the JSOC is often not able to confirm the identity of the targets.

Instead of accessing cellphone metadata through cell phone towers and internet service providers, the NSA uses a program called Gilgamesh. To be able to track the cellphones of potential targets a special device known as a ‘virtual base-tower transceiver’ has to be installed on the drone. The transceiver emits a signal that forces the target’s mobile to lock into the NSA’s system, allowing the target to be tracked to within 30 feet of their location.

As well as Gilgamesh, the NSA has developed a program known as ‘Shenanigans’ that acts like a giant cyber vacuum cleaner. A pod on an aircraft downloads massive amounts of information from any wireless networks, smart phones, computers, or other electronic devices that are within range.

Bryant told the Intercept the “JSOC acknowledges that it would be completely helpless without the NSA conducting mass surveillance on an industrial level.”

Noting that innocent people have “absolutely” been killed in these strikes, Bryant said that some terrorists have got wise to geo-tracking and have developed a number of tricks to elude the NSA. Taliban groups, he said, had been known to purposely distribute SIM cards among their organization to muddle trackers.

“They would do things like go to meetings, take all their SIM cards out, put them in a bag, mix them up, and everybody gets a different SIM card when they leave,” said Bryant, adding the targets “might have been terrorists, or they could have been family members who have nothing to do with the target’s activities.”

The classified data paints a very different picture of the targeted killings to Washington’s stance on the matter. The White House maintains the strikes are conducted with the utmost precision and all possible measures are taken to minimize civilian casualties.

Last year President Obama claimed “before any strike is taken, there must be near-certainty that no civilians will be killed or injured.”

The world at war: The mind, journalism, freedoms... Iraq Kills 57 Militants in Shelling Around Fallujah and Ramadi

Iraq Kills 57 Militants in Shelling Around Fallujah and Ramadi

Military: Time for Talking Ran Out

by Jason Ditz, February 03, 2014

Heavy shelling with both rockets and artillery fire continued today in the Anbar Province, as the Iraqi military prepared for a planned ground invasion of the city of Fallujah.

Though casualties on the ground there are difficult to confirm, Iraq put today’s toll at 57, all of them “Islamist militants” affiliated with al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) and killed on the outskirts of Ramadi and Fallujah.

Military officials say that an invasion of Fallujah could happen at any moment, and they continue to wait for final word from Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. One top official added that “the time for talking ran out.”

After AQI seized Fallujah last week, Maliki indicated his government was willing to wait as long as necessary for the locals to expel al-Qaeda, but within a couple of weeks the military began attacking the outskirts, and is now planning a full-scale ground invasion of the city of 200,000.

MOUNT SINABUNG, Indonesia — An Indonesian volcano that has been rumbling for months unleashed a major eruption on Saturday, killing 14 people just a day after the authorities allowed thousands of villagers who had been evacuated to return to its slopes, saying that activity was decreasing, officials said.

Among the dead on Mount Sinabung were a local television journalist and four high-school students and their teacher who were visiting the mountain to see the eruptions up close, said a spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. At least three other people were injured, and the authorities said they feared that the death toll would rise.

Mount Sinabung in western Sumatra has been erupting for four months, sending lava, searing gas and rocks rolling down its southern slopes. The authorities had evacuated more than 30,000 people, housing them in cramped tents, schools and public buildings. Many have been desperate to return to check on homes and farms, presenting a quandary for the government.

On Friday, the authorities allowed nearly 14,000 people living outside a three-mile danger zone to return home after volcanic activity decreased. Others living close to the peak have been returning to their homes over the past four months despite the dangers.

On Saturday, a series of huge blasts and eruptions thundered from the 8,530-foot-high volcano, sending lava and pyroclastic flows up to 2.8 miles away, Mr. Nugroho said. Television reports showed villages, farms and trees around the volcano covered in thick gray ash.

After the eruption, all those who had been allowed to return home on Friday were ordered back into evacuation centers.

“The death toll is likely to rise as many people are reported still missing and the darkness hampered our rescue efforts,” said Lt. Col. Asep Sukarna, who led the rescue operation.

The latest eruptions came a week after President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono visited displaced villagers and pledged to relocate them to new plots with permanent housing.

The volcano’s last major eruption in August 2010 killed two people and forced 30,000 others to flee. It caught many scientists off guard because the volcano had been quiet for four centuries.

Taliban bombing kills 20 troops in Pakistan

Mail.com

BANNU, Pakistan (AP) — A Taliban bombing inside an army compound in northwest Pakistan killed at least 20 troops Sunday, officials and militants said, in one of the deadliest attacks to target the country’s forces as they battle insurgents in its volatile frontier.

The blast targeted a vehicle in a convoy about to leave a military base in the town of Bannu and drive west to the North Waziristan tribal area, police official Inyat Ali Khan said. Pakistan’s military said the blast wounded 30 troops.

The Taliban claimed the attack and called it a suicide bombing. Military officials said the blast came from an explosive planted in the vehicle, hired by the paramilitary Frontier Corps. While the army has its own transport vehicles, the paramilitary forces often hire vehicles when they need to move troops in large numbers.

A spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban, Shahidullah Shahid, told The Associated Press by telephone that the attack had been carried out to avenge the death of Waliur Rehman, the group’s former second in command. He was killed last year in a U.S. drone strike.

“We will avenge the killing of every one of our fellows through such attacks,” the spokesman warned. The explosion was heard and felt across the town of Bannu. “I rushed out of my home and saw black, thick smoke billowing out of the cantonment’s Razmak gate area,” resident Sajjad Khan said. He said troops quickly cordoned off the area and ordered residents to go back inside their homes.

North Waziristan is considered a safe haven for al-Qaida-linked militants. Pakistani troop convoys often are hit by roadside bombs, but blasts inside military compounds are rare. Last December, a suicide bomber killed four Pakistani soldiers when he rammed an explosive-laden car into a checkpoint outside an army camp in North Waziristan. Thirty Pakistani troops died over a four-day period last April in another part of the northwest called the Tirah Valley as part of an operation to oust militants hiding there.

The Pakistani military has been fighting for years in the tribal areas against militants who want to overthrow the government and establish a hard-line Islamic state. The tribal region is also a refuge for insurgents fighting NATO and U.S. forces in neighboring Afghanistan.

Many Pakistanis resent fighting fellow Muslims and have grown tired of the long war. Many see it as having been foisted upon them by the U.S. after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks and the invasion of Afghanistan.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, elected last May, has promised to end the fighting through peace talks. But so far the Pakistani Taliban has shown little desire to negotiate with the government and ruled out talks after a U.S. drone strike killed leader Hakimullah Mehsud on Nov. 1. Previous attempts at talks quickly failed.

In their statement Sunday, the Taliban said it would be open to talks but only if they thought the government was sincere. The militants have accused Pakistan of helping the U.S. target Mehsud. Islamabad vehemently denied the allegation and accused Washington of sabotaging the nascent peace talks.

Mehsud’s replacement, Mullah Fazlullah, is not seen as a supporter of peace talks. Fazlullah is known as a particularly ruthless militant who planned the failed assassination targeting teenage activist Malala Yousafzai in 2012.

Santana reported from Islamabad. Associated Press writer Riaz Khan in Peshawar, Pakistan, contributed to this report.

Violence continued in Iraq on Thursday as a suicide bomber attacked a military recruiting center in Baghdad, killing at least 21 people.

Qassim Abdul-Zahra and Adam Schreck of The Associated Press reported that the attack “likely meant to send a message to the government and would-be army volunteers over the Iraqi troops’ ongoing push to retake two cities overrun by al-Qaida militants.”

The suicide bombing followed an attack Wednesday night in the Diyala Province, where gunmen killed 12 soldiers at an army barracks.

New York train derailment kills four, injures 63

NEW YORK CITY Sun Dec 1, 2013 9:52am EST

NEW YORK CITY (Reuters) – A passenger train derailed early on Sunday in New York City when at least five cars from a Metro-North train slid off the tracks, injuring several riders, officials said.

The train derailed on a large curved section of track at 7:20 a.m. in New York about 100 yards (meters) north of Metro North’s Spuyten Duyvil station, said Aaron Donovan, a spokesman for Metro North, which is a subsidiary of New York State’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

At least one rail car was lying toppled near the Hudson river and police and other rescue workers were searching for survivors along the shoreline and the waterway.

Dozens of firefighters were on the scene helping pull people from the wreckage. Many people suffered injuries and some were transported to area hospitals for treatment, said New York City Fire Department spokesman Michael Parrella.

The train was a diesel with seven cars. The locomotive was on the north end pushing the cars southward.

6 Afghan Contractors Beheaded; Bomb Kills 12

The beheading of six contractors for the Afghan government is being blamed on Taliban insurgents who previously have targeted contractors in Afghanistan’s south. Villagers on Sunday found the bodies of the contractors, who had been building police compounds and checkpoints in Kandahar province, said an Associated Press report. Meanwhile, the death toll rose to 12 after a Taliban suicide attack on Saturday in the Afghan capital of Kabul that occurred ahead of a meeting this coming week to debate a security agreement with the U.S.

(AP) — A suicide car bomber tore through the Afghan capital Saturday, just hours after President Hamid Karzai announced U.S. and Afghan negotiators had agreed on a draft deal allowing U.S. troops to remain in the country beyond a 2014 deadline.

The blast, which killed six people near where thousands of tribal leaders will discuss the deal next week, was a bloody reminder of the insecurity plaguing the country after 12 years of war.

The suicide bomber attacked security forces protecting the Loya Jirga site, Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said. He said the blast killed six people and wounded 22. Among the dead were two security personnel, he said.

Sediqqi said Afghan security forces had prior knowledge of the suicide bombing, but were unable to stop the attack. He did not elaborate.

No group immediately claimed the attack, though blame is likely to fall on the Taliban, who have adamantly opposed the presence of any foreign soldiers in Afghanistan.

Karzai called for the Loya Jirga, a national consultative assembly of tribal elders, which will begin meeting Thursday to discuss the proposal. Some 3,000 elders and influential figures will debate the Bilateral Security Agreement.

Without its approval, Afghanistan likely will refuse to sign the agreement. If the Loya Jirga does approve it, the agreement still requires final approval from parliament, Karzai said.

U.S. officials refused to comment on the draft, describing the effort as an ongoing diplomatic process. Karzai provided few details regarding how and when the draft was finalized, but said there still remain “differences” between Washington and Kabul on the deal.

Negotiations have been protracted and often acrimonious. In the end it took a surprise visit to Afghanistan in October by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry to produce the outlines of a deal.

Earlier, two senior U.S. officials told The Associated Press that Afghanistan had sought specific security guarantees, particularly against cross-border incursions by insurgents from neighboring Pakistan. Washington is cautious about any commitments that could lead to a conflict with Pakistan. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the deal was still being negotiated.

Karzai described a laborious negotiation process that sometimes came down to fine details of phrasing.

“There was one word that we didn’t want in the agreement but (the U.S.) wanted it and in the end they agreed to not use that word,” he said, without identifying the offending word.

Karzai did not say what the draft said regarding U.S. service members’ immunity from prosecution in an Afghan court. They could still face prosecution in a U.S. court.

The sweeping document incorporates the usual Status of Forces Protection Agreement, which the U.S. signs with every country where its troops are stationed, along with a wide range of other clauses. It covers everything from customs duties on goods the U.S. imports for its troops and development projects to the question of whether a U.S. service member could be prosecuted for criminal offences in an Afghan court.

Still this key American demand has been a sore point in Afghanistan. Many are still angry over incidents including the February 2012 accidental burning of hundreds of copies of the Islamic holy book, the Quran, a March 2012 shooting spree by a U.S. soldier in southern Afghanistan that killed 16 people, and unintended civilian deaths from U.S. bombs.

Still, the audacity of Saturday’s daylight bombing, just 200 meters (220 yards) from the site of the Loya Jirga, was a stark reminder of militants’ striking power in the country. It also seemed to bolster arguments of those who favor the security agreement and a continued presence of international forces in Afghanistan.

“I believe that without this document, Afghanistan would again be isolated and alone,” National Security Adviser Rangin Dadfar Spanta told parliament Saturday.

Spanta warned that without a security agreement with the U.S., Afghanistan would be vulnerable to interference from its neighbors. Afghan officials routinely accuse Pakistan of interfering in its internal affairs and harboring insurgents on its soil.

A “no” vote from the Jirga likely will scuttle the agreement and leave Afghanistan without any U.S. forces after the end of 2014. With the agreement, the residual force of about 10,000 that is expected to remain behind would mostly train and mentor Afghanistan’s National Security Force. A small group of U.S. Special Forces also are expected to stay in Afghanistan to hunt down al-Qaida fighters and carry out counter-terrorism activities.

In his comments Saturday, Karzai didn’t come out and endorse the agreement. He only urged participants of the coming Loya Jirga to carefully read it.

“They should think about the prosperity and stability of today and tomorrow in Afghanistan. And whatever decision they are making they should think about the future of Afghanistan,” he said.

Survivors "walk like zombies" after Philippine typhoon kills estimated 10,000

TACLOBAN, Philippines (Reuters) – One of the most powerful storms ever recorded killed at least 10,000 people in the central Philippines province of Leyte, a senior police official said on Sunday, with coastal towns and the regional capital devastated by huge waves.

Super typhoon Haiyan destroyed about 70 to 80 percent of the area in its path as it tore through the province on Friday, said chief superintendent Elmer Soria, a regional police director.

Most of the deaths appear to have been caused by surging sea water strewn with debris that many described as similar to a tsunami, which leveled houses and drowned hundreds of people.

The national government and disaster agency have not confirmed the latest estimate of deaths, a sharp increase from initial estimates on Saturday of at least 1,000 killed.

“We had a meeting last night with the governor and the other officials. The governor said, based on their estimate, 10,000 died,” Soria told Reuters. “The devastation is so big.”

Haiyan, a category 5 typhoon that churned through the Philippine archipelago in a straight line from east to west, packing wind gusts of around 275 kph (170 mph), weakened significantly before hitting northern Vietnam on Sunday.

Leyte province’s capital of Tacloban, with a population of 220,000, bore the brunt of Haiyan, which was possibly the strongest storm ever to make landfall.

The city and nearby villages as far as one kilometer from shore were flooded by the storm surge, leaving floating bodies and roads choked with debris from fallen trees, tangled power lines and flattened homes. TV footage showed children clinging to rooftops for their lives.

“From a helicopter, you can see the extent of devastation. From the shore and moving a kilometer inland, there are no structures standing. It was like a tsunami,” said Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas, who had been in Tacloban since before the typhoon struck the city, about 580 km (360 miles) southeast of Manila.

“I don’t know how to describe what I saw. It’s horrific.”

City officials said they were struggling to retrieve bodies and send relief supplies to survivors. They also reported widespread looting as authorities struggled to restore order and repair shattered communications.

“There is looting in the malls and large supermarkets. They are taking everything even appliances like TV sets, these will be traded later on for food,” said Tecson John Lim, the Tacloban city administrator.

“We don’t have enough manpower. We have 2,000 employees but only about 100 are reporting for work. Everyone is attending to their families.”

Lim said city officials had so far only collected 300-400 bodies, but believed the death toll in the city alone could be 10,000.

“The dead are on the streets, they are in their houses, they are under the debris, they are everywhere,” he said.

International aid agencies said relief efforts in the Philippines are stretched thin after a 7.2 magnitude quake in central Bohol province last month and displacement caused by a conflict with Muslim rebels in southern Zamboanga province.

The World Food Programme said it was airlifting 40 tons of high energy biscuits, enough to feed 120,000 people for a day, as well as emergency supplies and telecommunications equipment.

Tacloban city airport was all but destroyed as seawaters swept through the city, shattering the glass of the airport tower, leveling the terminal and overturning nearby vehicles.

Airport manager Efren Nagrama, 47, said water levels rose up to four meters (13 feet).

“It was like a tsunami. We escaped through the windows and I held on to a pole for about an hour as rain, seawater and wind swept through the airport,” he said. “Some of my staff survived by clinging to trees. I prayed hard all throughout until the water subsided.”

Syrian forces have killed over a hundred foreign-backed militants fighting against the government of President Bashar al-Assad in Homs countryside.

The army said the militants died after attempting to attack security checkpoints in the area, adding, most of them were non-Syrians.

The army units also destroyed several hideouts of the foreign-sponsored militants in the neighborhoods of al-Warsha and al-Hamidieh in the strategic city of Homs.

The government troops have recently conducted successful clean-up operations across the country, inflicting heavy losses on the militants.

Last week, Syrian forces took control of the key town of al-Bweida, south of the capital Damascus, after pushing out foreign-sponsored militants and destroying their equipment.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies — especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey — are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.

According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced due to the violence.

On October 7, the UN said over four million other Syrians will be forced out of their homes in 2014 by the escalating conflict in the country.

Two million Syrians are expected to take refuge outside the country while another 2.25 million are predicted to be internally displaced next year.
