Mitt Romney on Hillary Clinton: She’ll be judged on her own record, not Bill’s

Ann and Mitt Romney

When it comes to the 2016 presidential race, Hillary Clinton shouldn’t be judged for the actions and indiscretions of her husband while he was president, former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-Mass.) said on Meet the Press Sunday.

While conducted the interview with Romney, host David Gregory pointed out that Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) has outspokenly condemned Bill Clinton for his relationship with then-White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Paul has also suggested that Democratic candidates who have accepted money from the former President should give it back. Gregory asked Romney if the former Secretary of State should be judged on the record of her husband.

“I don’t think Bill Clinton is as relevant as Hillary Clinton, if Hillary Clinton decides to run for president,” Romney answered. “And in her case, I think people will look at her record as Secretary of State.”

Romney told Gregory that people will look at relationship between the United States and other nations during Clinton’s tenure as Secretary, judging whether or not U.S. interests were elevated or not. The former GOP presidential nominee didn’t specifically mention the attack in Benghazi, but it will likely be the biggest point of contention when it comes to Clinton’s record.

Romney didn’t, however, dismiss the national humiliation caused by Clinton during his presidency. While Romney acknowledged the period of economic prosperity during the Clinton administration, he also pointed out that Bill “embarrassed the nation.”

“He breached his responsibility, I think, as an adult and as a leader in his relationship,” Romney said.

As unfortunate as that incident was to the Clinton family and the rest of the country, Romney said he doesn’t feel like the former First Lady is the one who needs to answer for it, disagreeing with Paul’s attacks.

The former Governor also reiterated his promise to stay out of the 2016 presidential race, which would be his third time running for the Oval Office.

“Is there something, Governor, that might make you change your mind?” Gregory asked. “Reagan, after all, he ran three times, didn’t he?”

“You know, I’m not Ronald Reagan,” Romney joked. “I think that’s been pointed out to me before. I’m not running for President.”

Mitt Romney on Hillary Clinton: She’ll be judged on her own record, not Bill’s

Romney: In Hillary 2016, Bill Is "Not Relevant"

(Newser) – If Hillary Clinton is the Democrats’ nominee in 2016, Bill hasn’t got anything to do with it, says Mitt Romney. “I don’t think Bill Clinton is as relevant as Hillary Clinton,” he says, as per Politico. “Hillary Clinton will have plenty to discuss about her own record, and I don’t imagine that Bill Clinton is going to be a big part of it. She has her own record and her own vision.” As for Romney 2016, he jokingly declined, saying, “I’m not Ronald Reagan; I think that ‘s been pointed out to me before.” Romney also addressed gay marriage (“I think the ideal setting for raising a child is in a setting where there’s a father and mother,” adding, “people have the right to live their life as they want to.”) and the Sochi Olympics (“There’s no such thing as a 100% guarantee, but I think at this stage people feel pretty comfortable that the games will be safe.”) Elsewhere on your Sunday dial:

  • NC Gov. Pat McCrory on the weather: It’s “not as tough as the first episode of House of Cards, but it’s been tough on all of us.” He adds that economically, the storms have “hit on our budget, and it’s going to be a hit on the economy, because people haven’t been spending money in the past four or five days.”

  • Mike Lee on ObamaCare delays: “This is a shameless act, a shameless power grab that is designed to help the president and his political party achieve a particular outcome in a partisan election.”

  • John McCain on Syria: “None of us want boots on the ground, but to not revisit other options, which are viable … it’s shameful. There are viable options, there is a viable Free Syrian Army … there is still viable opposition that we can help and assist.

Many presidential prospects are eying Romney’s fundraising operation. | M.Scott Mahaskey/POLITICO

Now that Mitt Romney has categorically ruled himself out of the 2016 presidential race, the battle is on for the most enduring part of his legacy — his fundraising operation.

Romney teamed with the Republican National Committee to raise $ 1 billion in 2012 and still controls perhaps the preeminent donor list in all of Republican politics. The pro-Romney super PAC Restore Our Future raised $ 150 million almost entirely from massive six- and seven-figure checks.

It’s a perfect match for presidential prospects and their allies who have begun quietly building their own finance networks, seeking donors who can write large checks, bundlers who can collect scores of $ 5,000 contributions, and massive databases of phone numbers and emails from which thousands of small contributions can be wrung.

Personal fundraising pitches from Romney are considered a potential wellspring for the Republican Party and its 2014 congressional candidates, while the pieces of his network have become coveted assets for 2016 presidential aspirants.

Candidates and committees in 2013 paid Romney’s still idling campaign at least $ 675,000 to rent his fundraising lists, while prospective presidential candidates like Scott Walker and Chris Christie have cozied up to Romney’s fundraisers and donors in closed-door meetings and fundraisers. Romney himself quietly slipped into Manhattan in December to headline a big-donor dinner for the Republican National Committee, where he was a huge hit, sources tell POLITICO.

And last month, Romney, for the first time as an ex-candidate, signed a fundraising letter sent to the Romney for President national direct mail list on letterhead bearing Romney’s name asking for contributions to another candidate — his 2012 vice presidential pick, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, who is often mentioned as a possible 2016 contender.

“I selected Paul as my running mate for a reason — he has one of the sharpest minds of anyone I’ve ever met,” Romney wrote. The letter, dated Jan. 17, sought contributions to Ryan’s congressional reelection campaign. “I was proud to welcome him to my campaign last year. And now I am proud to join his,” Romney wrote. “You were one of the Romney-Ryan team’s most loyal and generous supporters, and both Paul and I are grateful for all you did for us.”

Expect to see more mailings like that, along with fundraising appearances like the ones Romney did last year for Virginia gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli and the New Hampshire Republican Party, said Ron Kaufman, a top advisor to Romney’s 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns.

(Also on POLITICO: Mitt Romney: ‘I’m not running’ in 2016)

“Mitt has been courted by lots of folks from the day we lost. People up and down the ticket have asked if he would he do a letter, an email or an event — or if Ann would — and that’s only increased exponentially as buyers’ remorse has set in,” said Kaufman. “He could fill every day, every night three times over. And, that’s only going to expand headed into 2016. Not just on the money side, but Mitt has a huge network of friends at all levels that have been helpful to people.”

It’s quite a turnabout from the days after Romney lost the 2012 election to President Barack Obama, when Republicans rushed to distance themselves from their dispatched nominee, whose sometimes clumsy campaign left his party vowing to chart a new course.

Yet even during Romney’s most cringe-inducing moments, no one questioned his skill as a fundraiser.

He raised far more than any previous GOP candidate, utilizing a slickly produced major donor and bundler program, as well as aggressive direct mail, email and telephone solicitation programs.

(Also on POLITICO: The GOP’s 2016 name game)

The major donors and bundlers who rallied behind Romney have remained in contact with another, and many were still holding out hope that he might be persuaded to give it another go in 2016, said Kent Burton, a lobbyist who bundled checks for Romney and served on his national finance committee.

“The fact is that he is not going to run again, but there are still folks who are ardent supporters of his. And if I were out there as a candidate, I would make sure that I was in touch with the right people to be able to take advantage of that at the right moment,” Burton said, adding that moment has not come yet because of the fluidity of the field.

Romney Criticizes 2012 Debate Interference by CNN"s Crowley

Mitt Romney has finally broken his silence about the role CNN’s Candy Crowley played during a debate between himself and President Barack Obama during the 2012 election campaign.

Answering a question on Hugh Hewitt’s radio show Monday about whether Crowley was wrong to interject and back Obama’s version of his administration’s talking points on Benghazi, Romney responded, “Well, I don’t think it’s the role of the moderator in a debate to insert themselves into the debate and to declare a winner or a loser on a particular point.”

He continued, “And I must admit that, at that stage, I was getting a little upset at Candy, because in a prior setting where I was to have had the last word, she decided that Barack Obama was to get the last word despite the rules that we had.”

In the days after the attack on the U.S. mission that killed four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, the administration did not point to terrorism in its talking points.

“So, she obviously thought it was her job to play a more active role in the debate than was agreed upon by the two candidates, and I thought her jumping into the interaction I was having with the president was also a mistake on her part, and one I would have preferred to carry out between the two of us, because I was prepared to go after him for misrepresenting to the American people that – the nature of the attack.”

Paul Ryan: The Mythical Promise Of Obamacare Doomed Me And Mitt Romney

Former vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan told conservatives Friday that Obamacare helped President Obama defeat Mitt Romney in the 2012 election, decrying the “empty promises” of the law that hadn’t yet been implemented.

“This was our challenge that Mitt Romney and I had in this last election,” Ryan said in a speech at the annual Faith and Freedom Coalition conference in Washington, DC. “We had to argue against the promise and the rhetoric of President Obama. The great soaring rhetoric, all of the empty promises.”

“Remember in his first term, in his first two years, he passed his program but didn’t implement his program,” he said. “Now in the second term, we are seeing it implemented and it’s pretty darn ugly. We are seeing the assault on our liberties.”

The Republican congressman from Wisconsin and House Budget Committee chairman went on to argue that the Affordable Care Act was an example of “big government assaulting our First Amendment rights” when it comes to religious liberty.

He cited the mandate under the law that employer health insurance plans include contraception without co-payments for female employees — a rule that was announced early in 2012 and became an issue in the presidential campaign.

“Obamacare says that if you believe in the social teaching of your Church, if you disagree, you know, with abortifacients, abortion-inducing drugs, it doesn’t matter,” Ryan said. “This is what the federal government is demanding.” (The rule he was referring to involves contraceptives, which prevent — not terminate — pregnancies.)

Romney Praises GOP Govs, Pax Americana

During his speech at CPAC on Friday, Mitt Romney acknowledged that he’d made “mistakes” during the 2012 campaign and confessed that “as someone who just lost the last election, I’m probably not the best person to chart the course for the next election.” The former GOP presidential nominee didn’t dwell on the campaign or his mistakes.

Mitt Romney to Address CPAC 2013

Click if you like this post!

Mitt Romney is scheduled to speak at the upcoming Conservative Political Action Conference, the American Conservative Union announced today. Townhall is partnering with the ACU to host CPAC 2013, which is being held March 14-16 in the Washington, DC area at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center.

“The thousands gathered at CPAC this year are eager to hear from the 2012 GOP presidential candidate at his first public appearance since the elections,” said ACU Chairman Al Cardenas. “We look forward to hearing Governor Romney’s comments on the current state of affairs in America and the world, and his perspective on the future of the conservative movement.”

“I look forward to saying thank you to the many friends and supporters who were instrumental in helping my campaign,” said former Governor Mitt Romney.

NRO’s Robert Costa first reported this information earlier today.

After he lost the presidential election, Romney decamped to his beachfront home in La Jolla, Calif. But friends say he has become somewhat restless, and he’s eager to contribute to the national debate. Sources say he’ll likely focus on economic and fiscal issues, and that his message will be optimistic. […]

Romney last spoke to a CPAC audience in October, when he made a surprise visit to CPAC Colorado, one of the American Conservative Union’s regional conferences. He has also been a headlining speaker at previous national CPAC gatherings, and he has won the event’s presidential straw poll on four occasions.

CPAC 2008 was also the venue where the former governor announced his decision to withdraw from the GOP primary race.

A number of other GOP favorites will be speaking at the 40th annual conference, including former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Sen. Marco Rubio, Sen. Rand Paul, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Sen. Ted Cruz and former Rep. Allen West.
