Maddow to same sex couples: ‘Just get married’ whether it’s legal or not

Maddow on Jersey same sex marriage

  • On Friday night’s edition of “The Rachel Maddow Show,” Rachel Maddow discussed a tactic that is being used by same sex marriage advocates in New Jersey, and which has proved to be effective in other parts of the country. Same sex couples have been marrying while the legality of their marriages is still being worked out in the courts, a tactic that has proven effective in moving marriage laws forward in several states.

Maddow was joined by New Jersey Democratic gubernatorial candidate State Sen. Barbara Buono. The two discussed current Gov. Chris Christie’s stubborn resistance to same sex marriage, even as those marriages move forward in his state.

Maddow began the segment by explaining that in Asbury Park, NJ, the town clerk has started handing out marriage licenses to same sex couples. Asbury Park was once a run-down, nearly abandoned town well past its boom years, but an influx of LGBT people, artists and new businesses have caused the town to boom anew.

“And that is great for the residents of Asbury Park,” Maddow said. And while these couples who are marrying, she explained, are individual families, they are part of a tactic that has proved effective for marriage equality advocates.

“While marriage rights are still being adjudicated,” Maddow said, “just get married. It has an effect.”

She recounted that in 2004, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom up and announced that he was going to start marrying same sex couples in his city. That action, she said, “strapped a turbo-charge” to the drive toward marriage equality in California. Public officials did the same in New York state and other states where same sex marriage is now legal.

Maddow said that these acts of civil disobedience have been “a surprisingly effective direct-action tactic” toward LGBT people getting marriage rights.

Newly elected Sen. Corey Booker has made a similar announcement, in spite of the fact that Gov. Chris Christie has made his opposition to same sex marriage very plain.

Maddow welcomed Christie’s challenger, Barbara Buono to the show, who agreed that Christie was staking out a losing position on marriage equality, but that this isn’t a new course of action for him.

“The governor has a history of using his office to advance his own political interests,” Buono said. Not only is he off the mark on social issues, she told Maddow, “his economic plan really has just enriched the wealthy and crippled the middle class.”

Kerry Claims Afghan Troop Deal Will Be ‘Same Standard’ as Japan, Korea

US Status of Forces Deals Actually Vary Wildly from Nation to Nation

by Jason Ditz, October 17, 2013

The US is still in the process of trying to get a Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) in place to keep US troops in Afghanistan beyond 2014. As negotiations with the Afghan government continue to stall, Secretary of State John Kerry spurned questions about troop immunity, insisting that troops always operate under the same standard, and Afghanistan should expect no different from Japan or Korea in that regard.

Kerry’s comments sought to defer Afghan requests to maintain jurisdiction over US troops in the event of certain war crimes, while the US has insisted the troops retain full immunity, and was an effort to kill the debate by arguing that the pact was just standard boilerplate.

The comments were also flat out untrue, as US status of forces agreements vary wildly across the world, with jurisdiction different in almost every single pact, and full immunity is the exception, not the rule.

Indeed, Kerry’s comments were doubly wrong because the deals with Japan and South Korea actually both grant them some jurisdiction over US troops, and both nations have tried US troops in their own courts, the exact same standard the Karzai government has sought, and which Kerry has rejected.

Charles Rangel speaks to CNN

  • Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY) on Tuesday attempted to explain to CNN host Ashley Banfield that it was impossible to work with House Republicans in good faith as long as they wanted to “bring down our government” the “same way they fought as Confederates.”

In an interview following a House Republican press conference announcing a plan that would derail a bipartisan deal in the Senate to bring an end to the government shutdown, Banfield asked Rangel if he could get behind the plan because conservative lawmakers had backed down from wanting to completely defund or delay the president’s health care reform law.

“This is all about a handful of people who got elected as Republicans that want to bring down our government,” Rangel explained. “You can see it in the streets, you can see where they’re coming from. And the same way they fought as Confederates, they want to bring down the government and reform it.”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” Banfield interrupted. “I’m only assuming you’re referring to the tea party members who are pretty intransigent on their views. Are you likening them to Confederates?”

“Well, I can tell you this, if you look at the states that they control, take a look at the Dixiecrats, see how they went over to Republican Party,” Rangel pointed out. “I’m telling you one thing, if the Republicans want to bring the government back, if the Republicans want to make certain that this country maintains its fiscal integrity, all they have to do is to accept the Senate [deal].”

Banfield, however, argued that Republicans were in the majority in the House and that meant Rangel had to “deal with it and negotiate, and that’s what politicking is.”

Rangel reminded Banfield that the Senate compromise would be tough for Democrats to swallow, “but in an effort to make certain that it reopens government, I’m prepared to do it.”

“I’ve been dealing with this for three weeks,” Banfield said. “And what I can’t believe is that two weeks ago, we were talking about the complete defunding of Obamacare, a passed law that made it all the way through the Supreme Court. Today, we’re talking about bits and pieces of chipping little wiggle rooms away. And it still seems the intransigence is still as strong as it was two weeks ago. Can’t you look at this in a forest instead of a tree and see how much farther ahead we are from two weeks ago?”

“Well, you’ve been working on this for three weeks you say and I’ve been working on it for 43 years,” Rangel shot back. “And the way the Constitution is set up, when a bill is passed by the House and the Senate and authorized by the Supreme Court, you don’t use the nation’s fiscal integrity to change the law.”

“You can!” Banfield exclaimed. “Well, apparently you can. And that is causing us great grief out here in America.”

“We don’t want this for Obama and we don’t want it for any president,” Rangel insisted. “Republicans or conservatives, to put a gun at the president’s head, saying if you don’t agree with me politically, we’re going to take down the United States of America and those countries that depend on our dollar. That is absolutely ridiculous. It’s not a compromise. It’s a hostage taking.”

New Fed Boss Same as the Old Boss

The news that Janet Yellen was nominated to become the next Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System was greeted with joy by financial markets and the financial press. Wall Street saw Yellen’s nomination as a harbinger of continued easy money. Contrast this with the hand-wringing that took place when Larry Summers’ name was still in the running. Pundits worried that Summers would be too cautious, too hawkish on inflation, or too close to big banks.

The reality is that there wouldn’t have been a dime’s worth of difference between Yellen’s and Summers’ monetary policy. No matter who is at the top, the conduct of monetary policy will be largely unchanged: large-scale money printing to bail out big banks. There may be some fiddling around the edges, but any monetary policy changes will be in style only, not in substance.

Yellen, like Bernanke, Summers, and everyone else within the Fed’s orbit, believes in Keynesian economics. To economists of Yellen’s persuasion, the solution to recession is to stimulate spending by creating more money. Wall Street need not worry about tapering of the Fed’s massive program of quantitative easing under Yellen’s reign. If anything, the Fed’s trillion dollars of yearly money creation may even increase.

What is obvious to most people not captured by the system is that the Fed’s loose monetary policy was the root cause of the current financial crisis. Just like the Great Depression, the stagflation of the 1970s, and every other recession of the past century, the current crisis resulted from the creation of money and credit by the Federal Reserve, which led to unsustainable economic booms.

Rather than allowing the malinvestments and bad debts caused by its money creation to liquidate, the Fed continually tries to prop them up. It pumps more and more money into the system, piling debt on top of debt on top of debt. Yellen will continue along those lines, and she might even end up being Ben Bernanke on steroids.

To Yellen, the booms and bust of the business cycle are random, unforeseen events that take place just because. The possibility that the Fed itself could be responsible for the booms and busts of the business cycle would never enter her head. Nor would such thoughts cross the minds of the hundreds of economists employed by the Fed. They will continue to think the same way they have for decades, interpreting economic data and market performance through the same distorted Keynesian lens, and advocating for the same flawed policies over and over.

As a result, the American people will continue to suffer decreases in the purchasing power of the dollar and a diminished standard of living. The phony recovery we find ourselves in is only due to the Fed’s easy money policies. But the Fed cannot continue to purchase trillions of dollars of assets forever. Quantitative easing must end sometime, and at that point the economy will face the prospect of rising interest rates, mountains of bad debt and malinvested resources, and a Federal Reserve which holds several trillion dollars of worthless bonds.

The future of the US economy with Chairman Yellen at the helm is grim indeed, which provides all the more reason to end our system of central economic planning by getting rid of the Federal Reserve entirely. Ripping off the bandage may hurt some in the short run, but in the long term everyone will be better off. Anyway, most of this pain will be borne by the politicians, big banks, and other special interests who profit from the current system. Ending this current system of crony capitalism and moving to sound money and free markets is the only way to return to economic prosperity and a vibrant middle class.

CIA Activities in Syria: US Never Stops to Step on Same Rake

cia

According to the Washington Post (CIA Ramping up Covert Training Program for Moderate Syrian Rebels, Oct.3), the CIA is expanding a clandestine effort to train opposition fighters in Syria, as U.S. officials said. The newspaper reports the CIA’s mission has been defined by the White House’s desire to seek a political settlement, a scenario that relies on an eventual stalemate among the warring factions rather than a clear victor. As a result, US officials said, limits on the agency’s authorities enable it to provide enough support to help ensure that politically moderate, U.S.-supported militias don’t lose but not enough for them to win. The Washington Post informs that US officials spoke on the condition of anonymity and said the agency has sent additional paramilitary teams to secret bases in Jordan in recent weeks in a push to double the number of rebel fighters getting CIA instruction and weapons before being sent back to Syria. The effort led by the CIA was described as an urgent bid to bolster moderate Syrian militias, which have been unable to mount a serious challenge to Assad. The CIA is «ramping up and expanding its effort», said a U.S. official familiar with operations in Syria, because «it was clear that the opposition was losing, and not only losing tactically but on a more strategic level»…

Back in June the US deployed Patriot air defense systems F-16 fighter jet aircraft to Jordan as part of the annual military exercise called Eager Lion leaving 700 combat-equipped troops and 200 military planners in Jordan to assist in long-term planning with Jordanian forces in case of a chemical weapons crisis or a large-scale humanitarian relief mission. Then the US announced that it would send light arms to the rebels. In September the New York Times ran an interesting article called President Gains McCain’s Backing on Syria Attack saying, «Officials said that in the same conversation, which included Senator Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican, Mr. Obama indicated that a covert effort by the United States to arm and train Syrian rebels was beginning to yield results: the first 50-man cell of fighters, who have been trained by the C.I.A., was beginning to sneak into Syria».Back in May there had been reports that this training program had already been underway for some time and the LA Times caught up with it in June, disclosing that the program began at least as far back as November 2012 on US bases in Jordan and Turkey.

On August 23 French Le Figaro reported that CIA-trained rebels crossed the Syrian border from Jordan. They had been trained for several months in a training camp on the Jordanian-Syrian border by CIA operatives, as well as Jordanian and Israeli commandos, the paper said. The first group of 300 handpicked Free Syrian Army soldiers crossed the border on August 17 into the Deraa region, and a second group was deployed on August 19, the paper reported. The paper quoted a researcher at the French Institute for Strategic Analysis as saying the trained rebels group was passing through Ghouta, on their way to Damascus.

CIA activities today

The CIA training effort is centered in Jordan. The program is aimed at shoring up the fighting power of units aligned with the Supreme Military Council, an umbrella organization led by General Idris, that is the main recipient of U.S. support. The training is led by small teams of operatives from the CIA’s Special Activities Division, a paramilitary branch that relies heavily on contractors and former members of U.S. Special Operations forces. Officials said the instruction is rudimentary and typically spans four to six weeks. The Obama administration has explored the idea of using the U.S. military to expand the training program to what some officials have described as «industrial strength». It is unclear whether Jordan would welcome such a large U.S. military footprint, which would mean converting a covert program into one officially acknowledged by the United States. There are also legal impediments, including a measure known as the Leahy Law that would require a determination that no recipients of U.S. military assistance had committed human rights abuses. The officials said the agency had sent more paramilitary teams to secret bases in Jordan in recent weeks in a push to double the number of rebel fighters getting CIA instruction and weapons before being sent back to Syria. The CIA was «ramping up and expanding its effort», said a US official familiar with operations in Syria, because “it was clear that the opposition was losing, and not only losing tactically but on a more strategic level”. The CIA declined to comment. The latest setback came last month, when the largest armed factions in Syria, including some backed by the US, announced the formation of an alliance with a goal of creating an Islamic state.

Trends in the ranks of Syrian opposition

On Sept. 24, 2013 the death bell rang for the West-supported Syrian armed opposition. 13 of the leading armed opposition organizations inside Syria decided to unite their efforts under an Islamist-jihadist banner as the «Islamist Alliance» claiming to represent more than 75 percent the rebels fighting the Assad administration. The Alliance is to spread sharia laws throughout Syria formally rejecting the Western-backed Syrian National Coalition (SNC) as its legitimate representative. Significantly, the group includes some of the largest ostensibly moderate Free Syrian Army (FSA) elements as well as Al Qaida affiliated organizations. The supreme leadership of Al Qaida warmly endorsed the new alliance in a special communiqué. «A group of powerful mujahedin units rejected the authority of the pro-Western Syrian opposition leadership abroad and called for it to be reorganized under an Islamic framework».

It is not just a serious set-back, but rather the total and absolute failure of the US and the West in general to influence the opposition, as well as the whole Syria policy and a challenge to those who presented the view that the majority of the Syrian opposition is liberal and moderate, like US Stare Secretary John Kerry did. The US administration officials were misleading the public and Congress about the composition of Syrian rebel forces deliberately minimizing the role of Islamist groups in the opposition.

The unification of radicals has become a clear trend. The Army of Islam has been established as another Islamist actor. Rebel brigades operating in and around Damascus announced by the end of September that they had united under a single command comprising 50 groups and numbering some thousands of fighters. The formation of the Army of Islam strengthens Salafist jihadis under the influence of Saudi Arabia another radical group – the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), an al Qaeda branch which has in recent weeks taken control of territory from other Islamist forces in parts of northern and eastern Syria.

All of these groups formally commit themselves to sharia as the «sole source of legislation». Bottom line, they were all Islamist from the start. Something Russia had many times warned the West about.

* * *

The US-led Western myope policy in Syria has resulted in radical Islam gaining the upper hand inside the Syria opposition to endanger Europe and the entire Mideast. A new safe haven for al-Qaeda-linked jihadists and local radicals is being established in the north and east of Syria threatening neighboring Iraq. The goal is a Sunni emirate on the Mediterranean shore and Turkish border. The seasoned fighters will one day go or return to the countries of Western Europe or former Soviet space. Within Iraq, they are trying to revive the Sunni-Shiite civil war with a wave of suicide bombs, something that has become a routine daily news on TV. They are also stirring up tensions inside neighboring countries, including Lebanon, Jordan, and Turkey. This is a universal problem, a threat posed for the USA, NATO, the EU, Russia and a lot of other states. And this is the time the CIA is involved in activities aimed at making Syria an al-Qaeda safe haven and base camp. Like it or not, but there is a reality – the government of President Assad now is the only force capable of standing up to the radicals offensive in Syria. Russia and the US will discuss the issue at the level of foreign chiefs on the sidelines of an Asia-Pacific summit next week in Bali. They have a lot to talk about. I wonder what the US State Secretary will say about his previous affirmations the Syrian opposition is predominantly moderate or the CIA activities to enhance Islamists capabilities in the country. There is also one more issue to discuss and one more threat to United Nations activities against the background revelations about what the CIA is doing. On October 3 Russian president’s Middle East envoy Mikhail Bogdanov said that Russia fears that radical opposition in Syria may stage provocations in the process to eliminate chemical weapons. «Objectively speaking this cannot be ruled out, and we have certain understanding with our western partners in this respect that there are real risks and different kind of provocations because terrorists and extremists who are not interested in a peaceful settlement of the Syrian crisis might put different obstacles, quite serious, in the process to eliminate chemical weapons», said Bogdanov, who is Deputy Foreign Minister. He explained that, «one can get to the depots that are controlled by the government only in crossing regions that are controlled by the opposition». «That is why the question arises how to cross these regions and ensure the safety of experts from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons who will work there», Bogdanov added. (6) The CIA is aiding those who pose this threat.

Ex-pharmacist gets 14 years in federal prison for covering hospital surfaces with same toxic substance doctors inject into children

DeliciousPin It

(NaturalNews) It can still be found in virtually every influenza vaccine available at your local CVS, Rite Aid or Walgreens pharmacy, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) maintains an official position that it is perfectly safe when injected into a child’s arm. But the heavy metal mercury has landed a former New York pharmacist in the slammer following a conviction that he intentionally spread the substance on surfaces throughout the Albany Medical Center in New York out of anger over a hospital bill.

According to reports, the saga began when 60-year-old Martin Kimber of Ruby, New York, underwent two separate treatments at the Albany Medical Center back in December 2010. According to CSMonitor.com, Kimber was outraged when he received the bill for these treatments, which he tried to contend were too high. When hospital administrators denied these claims and explained that the charges were, in fact, correct, Kimber apparently went ballistic and decided to seek “revenge.”

Official court documents explain that, over the course of several months, Kimber applied at least six pounds of mercury, which he had apparently stolen, to surfaces throughout the facility’s cafeteria and elsewhere. He reportedly engaged in this activity on at least four different occasions, spreading mercury on the cafeteria salad bar, inside a toaster, inside an ice cream freezer and even directly on some chicken tenders that were later found to have made a hospital employee sick.

“Kimber’s action placed … others in imminent danger of death or serious bodily injury because he placed the mercury in food and food containment areas where cafeteria patrons would be directly exposed,” reads a federal agent’s sworn affidavit. “[Kimber] was observed reaching into the ice cream cooler while cupping something in his hand and engaging in a pouring action. He did not take anything from this or other food stations, nor did he stay to eat any food.”

It was later confirmed through toll road records and security footage that Kimber had, indeed, been the culprit in each of these acts of “domestic terrorism,” to pull the words directly from official reports, and police later tracked him down and searched his vehicle and residence. Agents apparently found 21 firearms and roughly 50 knives in Kimber’s car and a Nazi swastika on a wall inside his home.

Kimber’s actions were obviously malicious and designed to harm innocent people, which clearly warrants his sentence. But what is most interesting about many of the reports on the case is their repeated use of terms like “highly hospital. But when a drug company poisons children with it, we call it “medicine.”

If mercury is really as toxic as all these reports claim, however — and it truly is, as we have been saying around here for years — then the vaccine industry is just as guilty as Kimber of committing crimes against humanity. Except vaccines have harmed far more people than the mere handful that ate Kimber’s mercury-laced foods. When will the vaccine companies and their executives be held criminally liable for domestic terrorism against the millions of children who have been forcibly vaccinated with mercury-containing vaccines?

Wealthy French Eye Belgian Tax Breaks (Everyone in France Should Do the Same)

The inheritance tax in France is 45%, in Belgium it’s 3%. France has a wealth tax, Belgium doesn’t.

Wealthy French have known and used these loopholes for quite some time, but appeal of such schemes is on the rise following massive tax hikes of president Francois Hollande.

Please consider Wealthy French eye Belgian tax perks.

For decades, Thierry Afschrift’s boutique tax law practice was among the best-kept secrets of Belgium’s wealthy elite, his name passed discreetly between the landed gentry and industrialists in Brussels’ leafy suburbs seeking shelter from the kingdom’s Byzantine tax laws.

But in the past five months, Mr Afschrift’s phones have been ringing off the hook from another clientele altogether – wealthy Frenchmen seeking to set up private foundations in Belgium to protect their family fortunes from onerous taxes imposed by President François Hollande.

“We have loads of people coming every day asking us questions about setting up foundations,” Mr Afschrift said from his office on Brussels’ upmarket Avenue Louise. Other Belgian tax lawyers say they have been receiving around 10 calls a day from France inquiring about private family foundations.

The key to Belgian foundation law is that it permits the patron to hand over all assets to children as a gift, taxed at only 3 per cent instead of France’s 45 per cent inheritance tax. It also avoids France’s annual wealth tax, a levy that does not exist in Belgium. To top it off, the foundation’s benefactor retains full control of the assets while alive and can set disbursement terms for after their death.

“It is a very good tool to transfer assets gradually and assure the children don’t squander that family’s accumulated wealth,” says Manoël Dekeyser, one of Belgium’s most prominent tax attorneys.

“If the children want the money to play at the casino, the foundation’s manager can block them from doing so, if he has been instructed to do so by the parents.”

Said one lawyer, who asked not to be named to protect his firm: “Unfortunately, Arnault brought greater attention to the foundations system than we would have hoped.

“I would have preferred to keep it very discreet. Rich people know how to find us. They don’t need to read it in the Financial Times.”

Arnault Effect

Bernard Arnault is the owner of fashion and champagne house LVMH and reputedly Europe’s richest man.

French actor Gérard Depardieu stirred up tax debate with a threat to seek Belgian citizenship to avoid Hollande’s new top tax rate of 75% on millionaires.

Depardieu, who has been in around 200 films, says he’s moving to Belgium to avoid paying a new 75 percent tax on the superwealthy. The move has divided the country and has focused attention on the Socialist government’s controversial new tax policy.

The uproar began just before Christmas, when it came to light that Depardieu bought a home in Nechin, a drab Belgian village less than a mile over the French border. Depardieu admitted to establishing a foreign residence to escape new French tax rates.

“It’s pathetic really,” Prime Minister Jean Marc Ayrault said earlier this month. “Paying taxes is an act of patriotism and we’re asking the rich to make a special effort here for the country.”

Depardieu shot back at Ayrault in an open letter published in a major Sunday newspaper, Le Journal du Dimanche.

“I am leaving because you consider success, creativity and talent grounds for sanction,” the actor wrote. Depardieu said he has paid more than $ 190 million in taxes over the last four decades. He said he no longer recognized his country and offered to surrender his passport if he was, indeed, so pathetic.

Hollande’s Tax Hikes Backfire

Based on the Financial Times article as well as actual moves by the super-wealthy, it appears Hollande’s tax policies have already backfired.

For every dime collected, a flood of middle-class and wealthy French are setting up foundations to avoid inheritance taxes and shelter current income as well.

Indeed, any French citizen with an estate to pass on should investigate setting up a private foundation in Belgium to avoid onerous inheritance taxes.
