U.S. lawmaker investigates whether Russia behind Snowden"s leaks

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The head of the U.S. House of Representatives Intelligence Committee said on Sunday he is investigating whether former spy agency contractor Edward Snowden had help from Russia in stealing and revealing U.S. government secrets.

“I believe there’s a reason he ended up in the hands – the loving arms – of an FSB agent in Moscow. I don’t think that’s a coincidence,” U.S. Representative Mike Rogers told the NBC program “Meet the Press,” referring to the Russian intelligence agency that is a successor of the Soviet-era KGB.

Snowden last year fled the United States to Hong Kong and then to Russia, where he was granted at least a year of asylum. U.S. officials want Snowden returned to the United States for prosecution. His disclosures of large numbers of stolen U.S. secret documents sparked a debate around the world about the reach of U.S. electronic surveillance.

Rogers did not provide specific evidence to back his suggestions of Russian involvement in Snowden’s activities, but said: “Some of the things we’re finding we would call clues that certainly would indicate to me that he had some help.”

Asked whether he is investigating Russian links to Snowden’s activities, Rogers said, “Absolutely. And that investigation is ongoing.”

Senator Dianne Feinstein, who heads the Senate Intelligence Committee, said on “Meet the Press” that Snowden “may well have” had help from Russia.

“We don’t know at this stage,” Feinstein said.

Feinstein said Snowden gained employment at the National Security Agency “with the intent to take as much material down as he possibly could.”

On the ABC program “This Week,” U.S. Representative Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, also expressed his belief that Snowden had foreign help.

“Hey, listen, I don’t think … Mr. Snowden woke up one day and had the wherewithal to do this all by himself,” he said.

“I personally believe that he was cultivated by a foreign power to do what he did,” McCaul said.

Asked whether he thought Russia was that “foreign power,” McCaul said, “You know, to say definitively, I can’t. I can’t answer that.”

‘TOTALITY OF THE INFORMATION’

Rogers indicated that the nature of the material that Snowden obtained suggested foreign involvement.

“When you look at the totality of the information he took, the vast majority of it had to do with military, tactical and operational events happening around the world,” he told the CBS program “Face the Nation.”

Michael Morell, the former deputy CIA director, said he shared Rogers’ concern about what Russian intelligence services may be doing with Snowden.

“I don’t have any particular evidence but one of the things I point to when I talk about this is that the disclosures that have been coming recently are very sophisticated in their content and sophisticated in their timing – almost too sophisticated for Mr. Snowden to be deciding on his own. And it seems to me he might be getting some help,” Morell said on “Face the Nation.”

Other U.S. security officials have told Reuters as recently as last week that the United States has no evidence at all that Snowden had any confederates who assisted him or guided him about what NSA materials to hack or how to do so.

Snowden told the New York Times in October he did not take any secret NSA documents with him to Russia when he fled there in June 2013. “There’s a zero percent chance the Russians or Chinese have received any documents,” Snowden told the Times.

In remarks aired on Sunday on ABC’s “This Week,” President Vladimir Putin discussed Snowden’s freedom of movement in Russia and that the American would be free to attend the upcoming Sochi Winter Olympics.

“Mr. Snowden is subject to the treatment of provisional asylum here in Russia. He has a right to travel freely across the country. He has no special limitation. He can just buy a ticket and come here,” Putin said.

Maddow to same sex couples: ‘Just get married’ whether it’s legal or not

Maddow on Jersey same sex marriage

  • On Friday night’s edition of “The Rachel Maddow Show,” Rachel Maddow discussed a tactic that is being used by same sex marriage advocates in New Jersey, and which has proved to be effective in other parts of the country. Same sex couples have been marrying while the legality of their marriages is still being worked out in the courts, a tactic that has proven effective in moving marriage laws forward in several states.

Maddow was joined by New Jersey Democratic gubernatorial candidate State Sen. Barbara Buono. The two discussed current Gov. Chris Christie’s stubborn resistance to same sex marriage, even as those marriages move forward in his state.

Maddow began the segment by explaining that in Asbury Park, NJ, the town clerk has started handing out marriage licenses to same sex couples. Asbury Park was once a run-down, nearly abandoned town well past its boom years, but an influx of LGBT people, artists and new businesses have caused the town to boom anew.

“And that is great for the residents of Asbury Park,” Maddow said. And while these couples who are marrying, she explained, are individual families, they are part of a tactic that has proved effective for marriage equality advocates.

“While marriage rights are still being adjudicated,” Maddow said, “just get married. It has an effect.”

She recounted that in 2004, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom up and announced that he was going to start marrying same sex couples in his city. That action, she said, “strapped a turbo-charge” to the drive toward marriage equality in California. Public officials did the same in New York state and other states where same sex marriage is now legal.

Maddow said that these acts of civil disobedience have been “a surprisingly effective direct-action tactic” toward LGBT people getting marriage rights.

Newly elected Sen. Corey Booker has made a similar announcement, in spite of the fact that Gov. Chris Christie has made his opposition to same sex marriage very plain.

Maddow welcomed Christie’s challenger, Barbara Buono to the show, who agreed that Christie was staking out a losing position on marriage equality, but that this isn’t a new course of action for him.

“The governor has a history of using his office to advance his own political interests,” Buono said. Not only is he off the mark on social issues, she told Maddow, “his economic plan really has just enriched the wealthy and crippled the middle class.”

U.S. Republicans question whether Syria deal has enough teeth

WASHINGTON | Sun Sep 15, 2013 11:08am EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Leading Republican lawmakers voiced skepticism on Sunday over whether a deal to remove Syria’s chemical weapons could work without a credible threat of force pressuring the Syrian government to comply.

The deal, reached on Saturday after talks between the United States and Russia, calls on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to account for his chemical stockpile within a week and allow for international inspections by the middle of next year.

“If the president believes, like I do, that a credible military force helps you get a diplomatic solution, they gave that away in this deal. I’m really concerned about that,” Mike Rogers, the Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, told CNN.

“Not one ounce of chemical weapons came off the battlefield but we’ve given up every ounce of our leverage when it comes to trying to solve the broader Syrian problem because we’ve taken away a credible military threat,” said Rogers, a Michigan lawmaker.

Obama said on Saturday that the United States “remains prepared to act” should diplomatic efforts fail in Syria.

Republicans have been highly critical of Obama’s handling of the Syria crisis, calling his policy muddled. He made a surprise decision two weeks ago to seek authorization from the U.S. Congress for a military strike after an August 21 chemical attack in Syria.

But he faced strong resistance from lawmakers and decided last week to explore a possible weapons deal proposed by Russia.

Senator John McCain, who has pushed for deeper U.S. involvement in Syria, criticized the accord, saying it gives Russia the power to effectively determine Syria’s compliance.

“I think it’s a loser because I think it gave Russia a position in the Middle East which they haven’t had since the 1970s,” McCain said on the NBC program “Meet the Press.”

“We are now depending on the goodwill of the Russian people if Bashar Assad violates this agreement,” he said. “I am of the firm belief, given his record, that it’s a very big gamble.”

Robert Menendez, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations, was cautious on the deal.

“If it works, then they get rid of chemical weapons without use of force,” he said.

But Menendez added that if Assad does not comply, “we’re back to where we started except Assad has bought more time on the battlefield and has continued to ravage innocent civilians.”

Some other Democrats said the agreement was a hopeful sign.

“I don’t know that I trust the Russians but I think this agreement is a very positive step,” said Adam Schiff, a California Democrat and member of the House Intelligence Committee.

The agreement states that a Security Council resolution should allow for regular assessments of Syria’s behavior and “in the event of non-compliance … the U.N. Security Council should impose measures under Chapter VII of the U.N. Charter.”

Chapter VII can include force but can be limited to other kinds of sanction.

CIA Sued Over Whether Top Secret Info Helped Hollywood Directors Make “Pro-Obama” Film

Did White House jeopardize national security while prosecuting whistleblowers?

Judicial Watch is suing the CIA in order to obtain the guest list from a June 2011 awards ceremony during which former CIA Director Leon Panetta revealed “top secret” information in the presence of Zero Dark Thirty filmmaker Mark Boal, in order to ascertain whether the White House jeopardized national security in order to help Hollywood directors make a “pro-Obama” film.

The conservative watchdog group is seeking, “Any and all guest lists or other records identifying individuals who attended and/or were invited to attend the June 24, 2011 awards ceremony at CIA Headquarters for individuals involved in the search for, and killing of, Osama bin Laden,” in addition to, “Any and all records of communication between any official, employee, or representative of the Central Intelligence Agency and any other party regarding the attendance of Mr. Mark Boal at the aforementioned awards ceremony.”

Despite being required by law to respond to Judicial Watch’s December 19 Freedom of Information Act request on the matter within 20 days, the CIA denied the request and invited the group to make an appeal to the Agency Release Panel. Deciding that no administrative appeal was possible, Judicial Watch launched the lawsuit on June 21 and announced it yesterday on their website.

During Panetta’s speech at the ceremony, the former CIA Director revealed ”the name of the Navy SEAL unit that carried out the Osama bin Laden raid,” the unit’s ground commander, as well as other “classified information designated as “top secret” and “secret”.

Judicial Watch also highlights the hypocrisy of the Obama administration in pursuing whistleblowers like Bradley Manning and Edward Snowden while simultaneously revealing sensitive information to Hollywood directors.

“Panetta’s disclosures at the CIA ceremony with Mark Boal present, along with the leaks revealed in the earlier documents obtained by Judicial Watch, provide conclusive backing to the serious charge that the Obama administration has played fast and loose with national security information in order to help Hollywood filmmakers make a pro-Obama film,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “In light of the Manning conviction and Snowden drama, it is clear that the Obama administration is more than a little two-faced when it comes to enforcing the law on illegal leaks.”

Zero Dark Thirty, which is a dramatization of the alleged assassination of Osama Bin Laden, was castigated by lawmakers, including torture victim John McCain, as “grossly inaccurate and misleading” for its suggestion that torture aided in the discovery of Bin Laden’s compound.

Promotional material for the movie began circulating before last year’s presidential election, leading some to accuse the Obama administration, which had worked closely with film makers, of trying to regurgitate the Bin Laden assassination for political points scoring.

The CIA directly authorized the movie’s writer Mark Boal to conduct interviews with CIA officers, military officers, and White House officials about the raid during which Boal was allegedly given classified information, “apparently in the belief that the public would appreciate the movie that resulted.”

While constantly citing “national security threats” as a justification to become more and more secretive, the CIA was apparently carefree about handing out sensitive intelligence to a movie writer as part of a PR coup for the agency.
