L"Wren Scott Was Way More Than Just "Mick Jagger"s Girlfriend"

Designer and former fashion model L"Wren Scott died Monday morning of an apparent suicide. She was 47. Scott was a visionary designer who dressed First Lady Michelle Obama, former French First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, and countless Hollywood actresses. Before she started her design career in 2006, she was a successful model, especially in the European markets. But when news of her death broke this morning, all anyone could say is that she was Mick Jagger"s girlfriend.

The New York Times didn"t even include her name when they tweeted the news.

The Times has since changed the headline on their story to "L"Wren Scott, Fashion Designer, Is Found Dead, Says Official." But the article still states, "She was a fixture on Jagger"s arm and, at around 6-foot-3, towered over her famous boyfriend." The Times and the AP characterize Scott as a nameless model girlfriend, not the founder of a multi-million dollar business. In 2014, it"s depressing that the best the Gray Lady can come up with to describe a talented entrepreneur is "she was tall and dated a famous guy."

Before her death, Scott was working on a collaboration with makeup artist Bobbi Brown. She had to cancel her upcoming London Fashion Week show due to production delays, but her SS 2014 collection was well-reviewed. She said at the time she drew her inspiration from Japanese aesthetic culture.

Scott and Jagger were partners for nearly 14 years. A spokesperson told the Times that he is "completely shocked and devastated by the news."

NAACP Stands by Chapter President Calling Sen. Tim Scott a Ventriloquist’s ‘Dummy’

Mediaite.com:

The NAACP’s North Carolina President Rev. William Barber II ignited a firestorm when, in an extensive profile in a South Carolina paper, he attacked Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) as a being a puppet and a tool of the “extreme right wing.” Scott did not respond in kind, but Republican officials demanded that Barber and the NAACP disavow those comments. Far from distancing themselves from Barber or his statement, the NAACP issued a statement defending the North Carolina-based chapter official and standing by his comments.

“A ventriloquist can always find a good dummy,” Barber said of Scott, one of just two African-Americans in the U.S. Senate.

“Dr. King emphasized love and justice rather than extremism,” a statement issued to Fox News read. “Unless we stand for justice we cannot claim allegiance to or pay homage to Dr. King.”

“In a state such as South Carolina, politicians, whether they be black or white, should not be echoing the position of the far right,” the statement concluded.

Scott Walker"s poster boy for job creation is a sex offender and forger

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker speaks at CPAC 2013.

Bragging about his job creation record during his state of the state speech Wednesday, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker failed spectacularly at a basic function of politics: vetting. As a politician, you want to talk about average everyday citizens as examples of policy in action, but you don’t, heaven forbid, want that small business owner helped by a tax cut to turn out to be a tax cheat. Or, as in Walker’s state of the state, you don’t want to tout your job creation programs by pointing to someone whose earlier trouble finding work was because he was in and out of prison for a range of offenses including sexual assault.

To demonstrate that his job creation record is better than the statistics show, Walker named a series of people who’ve found jobs during his time as governor. One of them was Christopher Barber:

Records show that Barber, who grew up in Marinette, was convicted of one felony count of forgery in 1999 and sentenced to one year in jail and five years’ probation. His probation was later revoked.

In 2005, he pleaded no contest to third-degree sexual assault as part of a deal in which prosecutors agreed to drop two drug charges. The judge sentenced Barber to three years in state prison, with an additional five years of extended supervision. Again, his probation was later revoked.

In addition, he was convicted of a misdemeanor battery count in 2009, and he has a handful of criminal traffic offenses, including three drunken-driving convictions, the most recent three years ago.

It’s not just that Walker is a member of the party that’s spent decades pushing for felons to serve longer sentences and have fewer rights and less chance at a job when they’ve served their time. There’s a basic test of political competence here. Again, it’s called vetting, and apparently Walker’s aides didn’t do it even a little bit. I guess when you’re desperate to make it look like your job creation record is better than it is, mistakes will be made.

Scott Brown Says He Won"t Run for Mass. Governor

BOSTON (AP) — Former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown said Wednesday night he won’t be a candidate for Massachusetts governor next year.

The former Republican senator and state lawmaker spoke on WBZ-AM’s ‘‘NightSide With Dan Rea’’ radio program.

‘‘I have decided, with my wife’s blessing, that I will not be running for governor of Massachusetts in 2014,’’ Brown said.

He said he wants to fulfill his commitments to the law firm where he works, and to Fox News, where he is a paid commentator. He said he will continue speaking around the country about the need for bipartisanship.

Brown had been mentioned as a possible GOP contender to succeed Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick, who isn’t seeking a third term.

Another Republican believed to be weighing a gubernatorial bid is Charles Baker, the former CEO of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and the 2010 GOP nominee for governor. Brown said he has spoken with Baker, who he says could provide the political balance Massachusetts needs.

‘‘It doesn’t mean I am not going to be participating in the political process,’’ Brown said. Brown said he’ll continue traveling to urge bipartisan cooperation, and tolerance of varying views within the GOP. ‘‘We all have to have room under this tent,’’ he said.

Brown had told supporters at the Iowa State Fair on Sunday that he is ‘‘exploring a possible run’’ for president in 2016.

Brown won a 2010 special election to fill the unexpired term of the late Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy. He lost in 2012 to Democrat Elizabeth Warren.

Sen. Tim Scott Delivers Weekly GOP Address On American Energy Independence

GOP: In the Weekly Republican Address, Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina takes the Obama administration to task for blocking and delaying new American energy production, which would create thousands of jobs and go a long way towards reducing dependency on foreign energy sources. By contract, Republicans support an “all-of-the-above” approach that includes nuclear, wind, solar and other renewables along with oil and gas production.

“Opening access to responsible energy production will lower prices, create jobs, grow our economy, decrease dangerous dependence on foreign oil and lower the deficit by adding much needed revenue to the Treasury,” Scott says.

Why Tea Party Gov. Rick Scott Flip-Flopped on Obamacare

Florida Gov. Rick Scott was elected in 2010 almost entirely thanks to his activism opposing the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare. Scott spent $ 20 million of his own considerable fortune attacking the law, and the Republican backed the state’s lawsuit challenging its constitutionality all the way to the Supreme Court. Scott had declared last summer that Florida would implement the law basically over his dead body, including the optional part that would provide federal funding to expand Medicaid to people making up to 138 percent of the poverty line.

So it was a bit of a surprise Wednesday when he announced suddenly that he had changed his mind: Florida should embrace the Medicaid expansion. We’d like to think that this article might have had something to do with his decision; Scott himself claims that mother’s death inspired his change of heart. But it’s more likely that the decision was a direct result of the US Department of Health and Human Services agreeing to grant Florida a waiver that would allow it to move more Medicaid recipients into private managed-care plans—many of which are part of huge corporate insurance companies waiting to cash in on the latest installment of Obamacare. (The Medicaid expansion is expected to send $ 66 billion in federal funds to Florida in the next decade.)

Scott has been saying for months that if HHS approved Florida’s waiver request, he might be more willing to take the Medicaid expansion. He was in DC in January meeting with HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius over the issue. But HHS’s decision to grant the waiver was somewhat surprising, given that the state was asking to expand a very troubled pilot project going back to the Bush era. The pilot project, which also required a waiver from HHS, allowed the state to put Medicaid recipients in five counties into private, HMO-type health plans rather than the traditional government health plan for the poor and disabled. Scott has championed the pilot as an innovative way of keeping government spending in check. Health care advocates, though, saw the program as a major disaster.
