Walmart manager blasts company policy: Some employees haven’t gotten a raise in nine years

An unidentified Walmart store manager ripped the corporation in an anonymous letter published on Thursday, saying practices have deteriorated over the past two decades.

“Walmart use [sic] to keep giving you raises no matter your hourly rate,” the manager wrote to Gawker. “They now have caps based on position held. I have many associates who have not received a raise in nearly nine years.”

The manager’s letter stated that he began working for the company shortly after the death of founder Sam Walton in 1992, and used to consider himself a defender of Walmart’s policies.

“Walmart was a good company to work for in relations to the retail sector,” he wrote. “However I feel horrible for the associates I have to manage and the struggles they face. I ask this question, How come in 1999 Walmart could pay me over $ 10 an hour but in 2014 I hire people in at $ 8.00 an hour?”

Not only are incoming employees paid less, he said, but they are also ineligible for Christmas bonuses. Also, store managers no longer have the authority to authorize raises; instead, that is decided at the corporate level.

“I could keep going but basically Walmart has been hacking on its benefit and pay structure for years to save on cost,” the manager wrote. “Their over all view point [sic] is that there is little difference in performance and return on investment [between] a ten year associate and a new hire.”

The manager also explained that he could “never send an honest feedback” within the company without fearing for repercussions, saying Walmart had discontinued a feature allowing any employee to submit questions to former chief executive officer Lee Scott.

“Retaliation is alive at Walmart,” the author told Gawker, saying he wrote in using a new email address to further protect himself.

Weiner campaign manager quits

  • Campaign manager’s departure is latest sign Weiner’s mayoral bid is struggling

  • Weiner has acknowledged he didn’t stop having raunchy online chats after he left Congress

  • Weiner said he couldn’t say for sure how many more women might come forward

Washington (CNN) — Days after Anthony Weiner admitted to lewd chats with women online, his campaign manager quit, Weiner and his campaign said Sunday.

Danny Kedem’s departure is the latest sign Weiner’s New York City mayoral bid is struggling amid allegations of online sexual impropriety. After the chats and photographs became public Tuesday, a poll showed him dropping to second place among Democratic candidates for mayor and his favorable numbers plummeting.

“Danny has left the campaign,” Weiner told CNN affiliate NY1. “He did a remarkable job.”

Praising the “excellent staff” remaining in his organization, Weiner said more volunteers had flocked to his bid in the last few days than at any point since his campaign began.

“This isn’t about the people working on the campaign, it’s about the people that we’re working for,” he said.

Weiner admits to new sexting

Could Weiner sexting hurt Clinton?

Kedem,a 31-year-old operative who previously worked for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, declined comment in an e-mail to CNN.

Weiner first acknowledged Tuesday that he did not stop sending raunchy online chats to women when he left Congress in 2011. That resignation was prompted by allegations from several women that Weiner had sent them lewd photographs of himself.

Speaking at a news conference Thursday, the Democrat said he couldn’t say for sure how many more women might come forward.

“There are a few. I don’t have a specific number for you,” Weiner said.

Pressed to provide a guess as to how many online relationships occurred after his resignation, Weiner said, “I don’t believe I had any more than three.”

He has resisted calls from his rivals to withdraw from the mayor’s race, saying the decision of whether he’s trustworthy enough for the job should be up to voters.

His chief rival for the Democratic nomination, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, stopped short of calling for his withdrawal from the mayor’s race Sunday but lambasted his actions as generating further distrust in government.

“I think it’s become very clear that former Congress member Weiner has a pattern of reckless behavior, an inability to tell the truth and a real lack of maturity and responsibility,” Quinn said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “I don’t think he should be mayor, and I think voters, if he stays in the race, will make that very clear.”

On Friday, Weiner indicated he may stop answering questions altogether about his online relationships.

“There’s going to reach a point fairly soon that I’m going to say I think I’ve said enough about it, and I’m going to keep just talking about other things,” he told reporters on Staten Island.

CNN’s Chris Kokenes and Ashley Killough contributed to this report.

Detroit manager pitches debt recovery plan to creditors involving halt of debt payments

Emergency manager Kevyn Orr on Friday laid out an extraordinary, complex and painful path back to solvency for the city of Detroit in a proposed plan to creditors.

It would spin off the city’s water department, reduce city-provided health care for retirees and immediately stop debt payments and then use that money to keep the city operating while reinvesting $ 1.5 billion over the next decade to boost crucial public services like police and fire, step up blight removal and transform an antiquated, failing city government.

The impact of the document Orr released publicly and to creditors in Friday’s historic meeting cannot be understated.

IRS manager: White House not involved in reviews

(AP) — A self-described conservative Republican who is a manager in the Internal Revenue Service office that targeted tea party groups told investigators that he, not the White House, set in motion the review, the top Democrat on the House watchdog committee said Sunday.

Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., released a partial transcript of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform interview with the unnamed manager in the IRS’ Cincinnati office. In it, the employee said the extra scrutiny for tea party groups’ tax exempt status was an effort to be consistent in reviewing applications and not driven by politics.

“He is a conservative Republican working for the IRS. I think this interview and these statements go a long way to what’s showing that the White House was not involved in this,” Cummings said.

“Based upon everything I’ve seen, the case is solved. And if it were me, I would wrap this case up and move on, to be frank with you,” Cummings added.

In the five-hour interview conducted last week, the manager said one of his employees brought to him a tea party group’s application for tax exempt status. The manager said he recognized the political implications of the decision and flagged it for an office in Washington. Some Republicans have suggested that the Washington office initiated the close examination.

Republicans have complained the IRS targeted tea party groups because they are critical of Democrats and President Barack Obama. An internal IRS report found the agency gave the small-government advocates improper scrutiny.

The uproar forced out the acting IRS chief and put the White House on the defensive against those who suggested Obama was using the government to go after political enemies.

Sunday’s release of yet another partial transcript was unlikely to quiet those critics.

“The American public wants to know why targeting occurred and who was involved,” said oversight chairman Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., in statement released Sunday. “The testimony excerpts Ranking Member Cummings revealed today did not provide anything enlightening or contradict other witness accounts. The only thing Ranking Member Cummings left clear in his comments today is that if it were up to him the investigation would be closed.”

Oversight committee investigators have now interviewed at least five IRS employees about targeting conservative groups for additional scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status during the 2010 and 2012 elections. Some employees said they believed that officials in Washington were directing their work but didn’t show any direct evidence to support their statements.

Cummings and Issa have been releasing portions of interviews that back up their assertions. But neither has released full transcripts, making it difficult to discern a complete story. Also, the portions released tend to offer employees’ views on what was happening, not definitive orders that directed them to scrutinize closely tea party applications.

Cummings declined to release the full transcript of the interview he posted on Democrats’ oversight website.

A Cummings spokeswoman, Jennifer Hoffman, declined to release the employees’ identity.

In the 15-page memo describing their interview with the manager, Democrats on the committee said they were withholding the employee’s name at the request of the IRS.

Cummings appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” and CBS’ “Face the Nation.”
