European teens shunning ‘dead and buried’ Facebook

Facebook

The results of a study funded by the European Union, that checked on the pulse of young social network users, indicate Facebook is in trouble, big trouble. Anthropologists revealed that as older users in Europe flock to use Facebook, the younger generation is looking elsewhere and moving on to other platforms.

The Global Social Media Impact Study looks into how users between the age of 16 and 18 years old are finding Facebook with the influx of parents and other older users. Respondents from eight member countries of the EU revealed that they are turning to other platforms such as Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

“What we’ve learned from working with 16-18 year olds in the UK is that Facebook is not just on the slide, it is basically dead and buried. Mostly they feel embarrassed even to be associated with it. Where once parents worried about their children joining Facebook, the children now say it is their family that insists they stay there to post about their lives,” wrote lead anthropologist Daniel Miller for the academic blog The Conversation.

“You just can’t be young and free if you know your parents can access your every indiscretion. The desire for the new, also drives each new generation to find their own media and this is playing out now in social media. It is nothing new that young people care about style and status in relation to their peers, and Facebook is simply not cool anymore,” Miller added.

Experts also took note that the youngsters in exodus from Facebook know that its platform is far more superior than that of the alternatives but the study reveals that these users look beyond functionality when making decisions.

While the older population is very much concerned about privacies on social media networks such as Facebook, teenagers really do not leave the network because of such issues nor use it as basis for choosing the platforms they will use.

“The questionnaires we applied this summer in our Italian fieldsite showed that around 40% of respondents who were on Facebook had never changed their privacy settings, which means their profiles were public. At the same time, more than 80% responded they were not concerned or did not care if an individual or an organization would use their personal data available on the platform,” a blog post of University College London, which participated in the study, read.

The study does not really indicate the death of Facebook for now but merely looks into how a certain population of its users diversify their use of social media.

This is not the first time concerns arose that Facebook may not be attractive to the younger generation of users. In November, Facebook CFO David Ebersman said the site “did see a decrease in daily users, specifically among younger teens,” prompting the company’s COO Sheryl Sandberg to issue a clarification subsequently that “The vast majority of U.S. teens are on Facebook. And the majority of U.S. teens use Facebook almost every day.”

3 Dead When Bus Carrying Teens Crashes in Indiana

A bus carrying teenagers returning to Indiana from a church camp in Michigan crashed Saturday afternoon just minutes from home, killing three people and sending 26 others to hospitals, officials said.

The bus came speeding off of Interstate 465 in northern Indianapolis, about a mile from the Colonial Hills Baptist Church that passengers attended, struck a retaining wall as it rounded a curve and overturned. The campers were returning from Camp CoBeAc in northern Michigan, about six hours away.

The church’s youth pastor had sent a tweet a couple of hours before the crash saying the group was expected to arrive at the church about 4:15 p.m., around the time the accident happened.

“They were not that far from home. That only adds to the tragedy,” said Indianapolis Public Safety Director Troy Riggs.

The dead included a man and his wife, Riggs said. Authorities did not provide information about the third victim.

Riggs and Mayor Greg Ballard visited the crash scene, where clothing, pillows and seat cushions from the bus were scattered along with at least two shattered windows, before they headed to the church. Riggs said there was no indication that the driver had a medical emergency and called the accident “a great tragedy.”

Ballard said investigators were taking measurements and examining the bus to determine the cause of the crash.

WTHR-TV reported the bus driver told witnesses his brakes failed. Indianapolis Fire Department Lt. Ato McTush said police and fire officials had not determined whether the church-owned bus, which was carrying 37 passengers plus the driver, had mechanical issues.

Duane Lloyd told WTHR that he heard a loud noise behind him as he was traveling near the intersection and saw the crash around 4:15 p.m.

“I heard a skid. I looked back. I see this bus in the air and people falling out of the bus,” Lloyd said. “I could have gone my whole life without seeing that.”

Karen Woodard, a member of Colonial Hills Baptist Church, cried as she stared at the wrecked bus.

“It’s so terrible. I can’t believe it,” she said.

Indianapolis Fire Department said crews had to free five people who were trapped inside after the crash. Several people stopped to help before first responders could arrive, including one man who helped pull the driver out of the bus, the department said.

“People were stopping their cars. People were literally trying to lift the bus,” Lloyd said. “You just try to do what you can do.”

Fire officials said the injured included children and adults.

Nine teenagers were taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital, including one in critical condition. Three of those were treated and released, hospital spokeswoman Sally Winter said. She said 10 others, including nine teenagers and a toddler, were taken to Riley Hospital for Children. Seven of those teenagers were treated and released, Winter said.

Many of the patients were suffering head, arm and leg injuries, fire officials said.

Roads near the scene were closed, and authorities urged people to use caution in the area. A hazardous materials crew was cleaning up diesel fuel that spilled in the crash.

Outside the church, a yellow school bus with the church school’s name was parked outside with piles of sleeping bags and suitcases nearby. Families hugged outside and talked quietly before going inside, where they met with Ballard and Riggs Saturday evening.

Ballard described the families as “remarkably positive” despite their sorrow.

“Some of the teenagers are hurting pretty bad and you can see that in their faces,” he said.

Church member Jeff Leffew, 44, of Fishers, who had three daughters on the bus that crashed and a fourth on a second bus, said he was waiting to pick them up in the church parking lot when the second bus arrived. He said he knew immediately that something was wrong because the kids on the bus were screaming.

He went to the crash scene and found his three daughters with only bumps and bruises.

He called the crash scene “surreal.”

“You’re just praying that it’s not as bad as it looks,” he said.

Teens arrested as firefighter dies

The operation to tackle the fire was described as “particularly difficult”

Two 15-year-old girls have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after a firefighter was killed tackling a blaze in Manchester.

Stephen Hunt was among 60 firefighters called to the fire in the store-room of Paul’s Hair World in Oldham Street.

A spokesman said the 38-year-old got into difficulty at about 20:35 BST along with another firefighter and both were taken to hospital.

Mr Hunt, a father-of-two, was based at Manchester’s Philips Park Fire Station.

He was confirmed dead in hospital.

The other injured firefighter is not thought to have life-threatening injuries, a Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said.

‘Dedicated firefighter’

The fire broke out in the underground store-room of the shop at about 14:50 BST and was still being dealt with on Sunday morning.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze had been particularly difficult to tackle because of the complex layout of the building and the amount of material inside.

County Fire Officer Steve McGuirk said: “We are devastated by the loss of one of our colleagues who has died in the line of duty.

“We never expect to lose a colleague in this way and it brings home the dangers that our firefighters put themselves in every day to keep the community safe.

“Stephen had been a dedicated firefighter since 2008 and we are all in a state of shock.”

‘Devastated by news’

An investigation is being carried out in conjunction with the police to establish the cause of the blaze.

Mr McGuirk said at this stage arson was not being ruled out.

The Merseyside and Lancashire fire services are expected to lead an investigation into the circumstances around Mr Hunt’s death.

Firefighters remain at the scene tackling the blaze and Mr McGuirk paid tribute to their “professionalism, courage and dedication” while “mourning” their colleague’s death.

Matt Wrack, general secretary of the Fire Brigades Union, said: “There is a great feeling of solidarity amongst firefighters as a result of the job that they do and the risks that they face and this will be keenly felt by firefighters across the UK and indeed internationally.”

Vij Randeniya, president of the Chief Fire Officers Association, said: “We are all devastated by the news.

“We offer our sincere condolences to Stephen’s family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time.”

Parents Let Teens do Stupid Things

Click if you like this column!

Mom-blogger Ursula Hennessey, writing last week at OnTheCulture.com, questioned the lax supervision provided by too many parents of teens. A recent story in her local paper recapped an alarming incident in which nine high school students were found in one of the teen’s garage, drinking beer and setting up for an evening of drinking games.

They were caught thanks to neighbors who complained about the loud music emanating from the property. Here’s the kicker: The homeowners (read: parents) were inside their house, just across the driveway.

“What gives?” Mrs. Hennessey wonders. “How is it possible for parents to be so clueless about their children’s behavior?”

“I need help! I admit it! All I could think was, ‘How can these parents be so dumb?’” Mrs. Hennessey wrote. “Set me straight, Marybeth.”

To make things even more interesting, Mrs. Hennessey included a “bonus” question for this advice column:

From: Ursula

To: Marybeth

Let’s say it was your 16-year-old daughter who was escorted home by the police after getting busted at her friend’s house taking part in an underage drinking party. In the coming weeks, your daughter asks to go over to that boy’s house again: “We won’t do anything stupid again, Mom, I promise.” Would you let her go? Would you call the parents and confront them about their lax supervision? Would you (as I probably would, the chicken that I am) simply avoid this family and keep coming up with excuses for your daughter never to be around them again? Shape up my parenting, Marybeth. Gimme something to go on when this happens to our family.

To: Ursula

From: Mb

First off, I predict you’ll never confront this sort of situation because your eldest child is only 8 years old and you’re already working hard to avoid it. As I’ve said in the past, good parenting is no guarantee that great children won’t make dopey decisions, but it’s a reasonable hedge against a home visit from the police.

And oh, to revisit the days when my eldest was 8. It just so happens that last night I had a conversation with my youngest, a 15-year-old sophomore, about my reticence regarding house parties. And by reticence, I mean my hell-bent objection to them in most cases. Why? Because as my sage, my 83-year-old dad, said when I was a teen, “Nothing good happens at a house party.”
