Northwestern football players are employees and can unionize, labor board rules

In big, big news in the fight to curb the NCAA’s exploitation of unpaid athletes, the National Labor Relations Board’s Chicago district ruled that Northwestern University football players meet the definition of employees and can unionize:

NLRB regional director Peter Sung Ohr cited the players’ time commitment to their sport and that their scholarships were tied directly to their performance as reasons for granting them union rights.

Ohr wrote in his ruling that Wildcats players “fall squarely within the [National Labor Relations] Act’s broad definition of ‘employee’ when one considers the common law definition of ‘employee.’”

Northwestern will appeal the ruling, and with the players on the team turning over substantially from year to year, by the time of a final decision on whether they get a union vote, many of the leaders of this effort to unionize will have graduated. But this is an important step in the fight.

School Teacher Knocks Out 12-Year-Old Student Over A Joke About A Football Team

A 7th grader from Beaumont, TX was knocked out by an assistant teacher from his math class last week.

According to 12-year-old Reginald Wells, the teacher blindsided him with a punch to the face after he made a joke about his teacher’s favorite football team, “The last person’s voice I heard was some girl saying that I should call my mom, and then he like hit me, and I blacked out.” Reginald told 12 News.  

The boy says the teacher first hit him in the shoulder, “and I looked at him like ‘what the heck?’’ And then Reginald says he pushed the teacher’s shoulder, and that’s when the teacher hit him with the knock out punch. Reginald, who weighs only 80 pounds, fell straight to the ground.

“The left side of my face was numb…my lip hurt…my head was hurt, like it had been shaken.” Says Reginald. The boy’s mother was briefed by the school’s principal about the incident…

“(The principal) said Reginald was punched, in the shoulder, and then hit two times and uppercut, and then slid across the floor. It weighed heavy on my heart, because I’ve never put my hands on my son.”

The most disturbing part of this story? The teacher was not even arrested. He was thrown out of the school and fired on the spot, but the teacher was not arrested. Reginald’s mother was shocked, “For you to just let a teacher do that to him and just walk off, he’s fired and walks off, I can’t accept that.”

According to Reginald, the teacher told him that he was having a “bad day” before school officials escorted him out. He did not apologize for knocking the boy out, though. The incident is currently being investigated by officials down in Beaumont.

Unbelievable. We all have bad days, but you can’t just knock out some 12-year-old who insulted your favorite football team. You’re supposed to go home and let all your anger out on a throw pillow.

Alabama Punishes Students for Exiting Football Blowouts Early

After Alabama head coach Nick Saban complained about students leaving home games early, Alabama suspended the block-seating privileges of 20 popular student organizations. 

This means for the annual rivalry game between Tennessee played in the Third Saturday in October, any student “can sit anywhere in the student section.”

Alabama lists “early departures and excessive tardiness as ‘unacceptable behavior’ under its block-seating guidelines,” and  ”another violation could result in a suspension for the rest of the season.”

“I’ve talked about players playing for 60 minutes in the game and competing for 60 minutes in the game,” Saban told Al.com last week. “And, in some kind of way, everybody that choses to go to the game should stay there and support the team for the game.”

He added, “Maybe if you’re not interested in doing that, you should let someone else go who would really like to go because I have a lot of people who want to go.”

In Alabama’s four home games this year, Alabama has defeated Colorado State 31-6, Ole Miss 25-0, Georgia State 45-3, and Arkansas 52-0.
