Americans weary of the war in Afghanistan should understand that any U.S. presence there after this year “will not be one where we will be putting our men and women directly into harm’s way,” the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said Wednesday. Gen. Martin Dempsey told NBC News that Afghanistan “will remain a dangerous place for some time to come,” but he said the American mission there after 2014 will be more about training and helping the Afghan military at high levels, not patrol or combat.

VIDEO: Syrian Foes Meet Face To Face In Geneva

The Syrian government and the opposition met face to face on Tuesday and observed a minute of silence for people killed in the three year conflict after a first round of talks last month failed to make significant progress, delegates said. Syrian state news agency SANA said the morning’s joint session started with a minute’s silence “for the souls of the martyrs of the village of Maan in rural Hama.” Opposition spokesman, Monzer Akbik, said that Tuesday’s session was still focused on discussing what the schedule for the week should be and said the two sides were arguing over the length and number of meetings. VIDEO: U.N. And Red Crescent Resume Aid Operations After Homs Attack

Aid workers resumed humanitarian operations in Homs on Sunday, a day after they came under mortar fire in the besieged rebel heart of the Syrian city, evacuating dozens of civilians and sending in supplies to 2,500 people trapped by civil war. Homs governor Talal al-Barazi told Al Mayadeen television that 65 women, children and elderly men were able to leave the devastated neighborhoods in central Homs. Syrian state television said humanitarian supplies were also sent into districts where rebel fighters and civilians have been besieged for a year and a half, despite coming under fire from rebel forces.

VIDEO: South Sudan Minister Says Rebel Leader Can"t Make Ceasefire Hold

South Sudan’s defense minister said on Friday the leader of rebels battling government forces did not have enough control over his fighters to make any ceasefire hold, as peace talks dragged on with no sign of a deal. Defense Minister Kuol Manyang Juuk also told Reuters the two sides were still fighting over two strategic towns and said his government could ask Sudan for military help if the conflict in the world’s newest nation threatened South Sudan’s oilfields. Sudan, from which the south split in 2011, relies on revenues from fees charged for use of its pipeline that carries South Sudan’s oil exports to international markets.

Police said at least 14 people were killed Friday night and four others injured in a Taliban coordinated attack at a restaurant frequented by foreigners in Kabul, Afghanistan’ capital. Three gunmen armed with suicide bombs and guns were involved in the attack, a police source told Xinhua, adding the attack begun after one person detonated his explosive at the entrance of the restaurant around 7:15 p.m.

VIDEO: Turkish Police Fire Tear Gas As Kurds Protest Against Syria Wall

Turkish riot police fired tear gas on Thursday to disperse Kurdish protesters demonstrating against government plans to build a wall along part of the border with Syria. Thousands of mostly young men, many waving red, yellow and green Kurdish flags, had earlier gathered to protest the plans in the Turkish town of Nusaybin, separated from the Syrian town of Qamishli by a strip of no-man’s land and barbed wire fencing. Kurdish groups have decried the move as a government effort to prevent Kurdish communities on both sides of the Turkish-Syrian border from strengthening ties.
