Candy Crowley Asks Rand Paul If He’d Consider Becoming a Democrat

Noel Sheppard

Does Candy Crowley work for CNN or the Democratic Party?

It was tough to tell Sunday when after the State of the Union host asked guest Rand Paul (R-Ky.) if recent polling indicated the beginning of the end of the Republican Party, she actually asked him if he’d ever consider becoming a Democrat (video follows with transcript and commentary):

During her conversation with Paul, Crowley predictably showed a recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll showing Republicans taking the brunt of the blame for the recent government shutdown.

“Do you think, as many have now started talking about, and I grant you a lot of them are Democrats, that there has been irreparable harm done to the Republican Party?” asked Crowley. “People talking about how this is the beginning of the end of the Republican Party as we know it.”

So now this CNN host is even admitting that she’s using Democrat talking points on a Republican guest.

Paul just laughed and said, “I think our demise is a little bit overstated. I would say that both parties are going to catch a lot of blame on this.”

Crowley pressed, “Do you agree that Republicans are taking a lot?”

“Well, I think both are,” responded Paul, “and I think Democrats who think this is a parlor game, who think this is fun, here’s what the Democrats think. They think we’ll send a bunch of government workers out there to close off the roadside viewing of Mt.Rushmore because that is funny. I don’t think it is funny, and I think that Democrats and Republicans are going to catch blame.”

Then came the money question from Crowley.

“Do you see yourself at any point in the future being anything other than politically a member of the Republican Party?”

Paul once again laughed and said, “You mean, you’re implying a third party or some other party?

“Or if you wanted to become a Democrat,” Crowley actually clarified. “There are lots of sort of parties out there. Just wonder if you see yourself being anything other than a Republican?”

Paul once again laughed and responded, “No. I’ve always been a Republican, and I’m one of those people who actually is a real lover of the history of the Republican Party from the days of abolition through the days of civil rights. Republican Party has a really rich history. In our state, I’m really proud of the fact that the ones who overturned Jim Crowe in Kentucky were Republicans fighting against an entirely unified Democrat Party. So I am proud to be Republican. I can’t imagine being anything else.”

Bravo, Senator.

As for Crowley, CNN really needs to consider putting a D next to her name whenever it appears on screen because her behavior lately indicates that at this stage of her career, she’s nothing but a Democratic shill.

Televangelist Asks God For Military Takeover Of The U.S. Government

I know the adage goes “let him who is without sin, cast the first stone,” but some people deserve to be written a ticket to damnation…with the greatest sin being utter stupidity. Meet televangelist Rick Joyner (pictured), who recently made headlines for openly praying to God for a military takeover of the U.S. government. While appearing on ”Prophetic Perspective on Current Events,” Joyner claimed that democracy in America has failed and that the nation might not last even to the end of President Barack Obama‘s term.

Why not?

Well, according to Rev. Crazy Town, America is teetering toward tyranny. You know, that rascally Black in the White House won’t let go of power because he’s like Hitler or something.

Enter Joyner’s prayer, which pleads to God to save us — or well, those who look like him –  from dark ”forces” that are “at work right now to undermine and destroy the republic.”  If you let him tell it, ”our only hope is a military takeover; martial law.”

I’ve wasted God’s time praying for many a silly thing. Say, that one day Beyoncé  and I will sit in a hotel suite, eat Popeye’s, and sip wealthy people’s liquor as we discuss her starring in a movie of my creation. I imagine God gives me a side-eye whenever this prayer enters the universe, but thanks to Joyner, I now realize there are far more annoying heathens.

What exactly is going on that is so terrible in Washington that you pray to God for a government takeover? A health care plan that looks like one drafted by Republicans more than a decade ago?

I mean, I could see forming a prayer circle to send Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) to the Spike Channel and out of the Senate, but other than that, I’m a bit lost.

The initial clip was taken down from YouTube, but things on the Internet never truly go away. So Joyner was forced to address his controversial statements, “I did not plan for that program to be aired just as a government shutdown began.” Still, he claims, America is now sailing deeper and deeper in to these most-treacherous seas. “Also, after his prayers are answered, “Not only will our Republic be restored, but even more importantly, America will turn back to the Lord and fulfill our destiny and purpose.”

Exploiting indigenous people and African slaves in the name of greed and power? Can Rick Joyner get an amen? No? Okay, let’s move on.

Joyner ended the statement by repeating the declaration that caused all of the drama to begin with:

That being said, without a soon and very radical turn back to what we were called to be as a nation, we are going to pass through a time of martial law in America. The crucial issue is who the martial [sic] is going to be. This could be a very difficult time, much darker than we can probably imagine, or it could be a time when peace and stability is restored, and the Republic is restored to its Constitutional moorings. That choice is up to Americans.

As much as I’d love to dismiss the likes of Rick Joyner as some kooky, overly religious, fringe element of the Christian right, the reality is there are plenty of people in the Republican Party who share the fears that President Obama won’t let go of power. In fact, they are the majority.

From an October 2013 Public Policy Polling report:

One in four Americans say that President Obama is secretly trying to figure out a way to stay in office beyond 2017 – including almost half of Republicans (44 percent). And 26 percent of Americans think that Muslims are covertly implementing Sharia Law in American court systems, while 55 percent don’t think so and another 19 percent aren’t sure. There’s a huge partisan breakdown on this one as well – 42 percent of Republicans fear Sharia Law making its way into America’s courts while just 12 percent of Democrats agree.

Looks like I’ll be praying for the nation too.

WASHINGTON | Sat Aug 31, 2013 8:10pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama stepped back from the brink on Saturday and delayed an imminent military strike against Syria to seek approval from the U.S. Congress in a gamble that will test his ability to project American strength abroad and deploy his own power at home.

Before Obama put on the brakes, the path had been cleared for a U.S. assault. Navy ships were in place and awaiting orders to launch missiles, and U.N. inspectors had left Syria after gathering evidence of a chemical weapons attack that U.S. officials say killed 1,429 people.

But Obama decided to seek the backing of U.S. lawmakers before attacking, as polls showed strong opposition from Americans already weary of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Approval will take at least 10 days, if it comes at all.

“Today I’m asking Congress to send a message to the world that we are ready to move as one nation,” Obama said in a dramatic shift he announced in the White House Rose Garden.

Obama, whose credibility has been called into question for not punishing the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for earlier poison gas attacks, warned lawmakers they must consider the cost of doing nothing in Syria.

“Here’s my question for every member of Congress and every member of the global community: What message will we send if a dictator can gas hundreds of children to death in plain sight and pay no price?” he said.

Obama’s approach, which he debated with top aides on Friday night, has left in doubt whether the United States will carry through with the military steps that the president has already approved.

Backing from Congress is by no means assured, with many Democrats and Republicans uneasy about intervening in a distant civil war in which 100,000 people have been killed over the past 2-1/2 years.

Obama’s decision to consult with Congress is in line with an argument he has often made for a more collaborative approach to foreign policy in Washington than there was under his predecessor, President George. W. Bush.

But another reason to bring lawmakers into the process is that Obama might be able to share some of the responsibility with Congress if it votes for strikes on Syria that turn badly for Washington.

Lawmakers for the most part welcomed Obama’s decision but looked in no hurry to come back to Washington early from their summer recess, which lasts until September 9.

“In consultation with the president, we expect the House to consider a measure the week of September 9,” said John Boehner, the top U.S. Republican and speaker of the House of Representatives. “This provides the president time to make his case to Congress and the American people.”

House members are to receive a classified briefing on Sunday from administration officials to hear the case against Syria. Officials briefed senators on Saturday.

British Prime Minister David Cameron, who was unable to persuade the British parliament to back action earlier in the week, welcomed Obama’s decision, as did the government of French President Francois Hollande, with whom Obama spoke on Saturday.

In rebel-held areas of Syria, there was a sense of frustration and disappointment.

“God curse everything,” said an activist in the rebel-held territory of Idlib, Ahmad Kaddour. “We’ve become just a game to people. I think this is going to make the situation worse for those of us living here.”

A Reuters reporter visited a group of fighters and activists sitting in a home in Aleppo city. They had not watched Obama’s speech, and when told of the president’s decision, they all agreed it meant there would be no U.S. strike.

“This is the same old hesitancy that the United States have tortured us with since the beginning of the revolution,” one said.

DECISION MADE FRIDAY NIGHT

At the White House, Obama’s decision surprised senior aides when he informed them of it on Friday night after they had concluded the president already had the legal authority to act on his own.

Officials said he laid out the idea of going to Congress during a 45-minute walk on the White House south grounds with chief of staff Denis McDonough, then debated the risks with others in his inner circle, some of whom argued against his logic.

Senior administration officials who briefed reporters after Obama spoke said they believed Congress will vote in favor of a U.S. military strike because of the threat chemical weapons pose to the security of U.S. ally Israel and other friends in the region.

Jon Alterman, a former State Department official who is a Middle East expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said failure by Obama to get his way “could be something that not only dominates September and October, but could shadow the rest of the administration.”

Obama sent draft legislation to Congress on Saturday formally asking for approval to use military force in Syria to “deter, disrupt, prevent and degrade” the potential for further chemical attacks.

The August 21 attack was the deadliest single incident of the Syrian civil war and the world’s worst use of chemical arms since Iraq’s Saddam Hussein gassed thousands of Kurds in 1988.

The team of U.N. experts arrived in the Netherlands on Saturday carrying evidence and samples relating to the attack. They had flown from Beirut after crossing the border into Lebanon by road earlier in the day.

The 20-member team had arrived in Damascus three days before the attack to investigate earlier accusations of chemical weapons use. After days holed up in a hotel, they visited the sites several times, taking blood and tissue samples from victims and from soldiers at a government hospital.

War weariness cost Washington the support of its closest ally: Britain has voiced backing for action but was forced to drop any plans for a military strike after Cameron unexpectedly lost a vote over it in parliament on Thursday, straining London’s “special relationship” with Washington.

Syria and its main ally, Russia, say rebels carried out the gas attack as a provocation. Moscow has repeatedly used its U.N. Security Council veto to block action against Syria and says any attack would be illegal and only inflame the civil war there.

“I am convinced that (the chemical attack) is nothing more than a provocation by those who want to drag other countries into the Syrian conflict,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday.

Syria’s Foreign Ministry repeated its denial that the government had used chemical weapons against its own people. Washington says the Syrian denials are not credible and that the rebels would not have been able to launch such an attack.

Syria’s neighbor Turkey backs the use of force. The Arab League has said Syria is to blame for the chemical attack but so far stopped short of explicitly endorsing Western military strikes. Arab League foreign ministers are due to meet in Cairo on Sunday.

Iran, Assad’s main ally in the region, has condemned plans for strikes and warned of wider war.

Obama DOJ Asks Court to Grant Immunity to George W. Bush For Iraq War

War is a Crime – by Inder Comar

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., (Aug. 20, 2013) — In court papers filed today (PDF), the United States Department of Justice requested that George W. Bush, Richard Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice and Paul Wolfowitz be granted procedural immunity in a case alleging that they planned and waged the Iraq War in violation of international law.

Plaintiff Sundus Shaker Saleh, an Iraqi single mother and refugee now living in Jordan, filed a complaint in March 2013 in San Francisco federal court alleging that the planning and waging of the war constituted a “crime of aggression” against Iraq, a legal theory that was used by the Nuremberg Tribunal to convict Nazi war criminals after World War II.

“The DOJ claims that in planning and waging the Iraq War, ex-President Bush and key members of his Administration were acting within the legitimate scope of their employment and are thus immune from suit,” chief counsel Inder Comar of Comar Law said.

The “Westfall Act certification,” submitted pursuant to the Westfall Act of 1988, permits the Attorney General, at his or her discretion, to substitute the United States as the defendant and essentially grant absolute immunity to government employees for actions taken within the scope of their employment.

In her lawsuit, Saleh alleges that:

– Richard Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and Paul Wolfowitz began planning the Iraq War in 1998 through their involvement with the “Project for the New American Century,” a Washington DC non-profit that advocated for the military overthrow of Saddam Hussein.

– Once they came to power, Saleh alleges that Cheney, Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz convinced other Bush officials to invade Iraq by using 9/11 as an excuse to mislead and scare the American public into supporting a war.

– Finally, she claims that the United States failed to obtain United Nations approval prior to the invasion, rendering the invasion illegal and an act of impermissible aggression.

“The good news is that while we were disappointed with the certification, we were prepared for it,” Comar stated. “We do not see how a Westfall Act certification is appropriate given that Ms. Saleh alleges that the conduct at issue began prior to these defendants even entering into office. I think the Nuremberg prosecutors, particularly American Chief Prosecutor Robert Jackson, would be surprised to learn that planning a war of aggression at a private non-profit, misleading a fearful public, and foregoing proper legal authorization somehow constitute lawful employment duties for the American president and his or her cabinet.”

The case is Saleh v. Bush (N.D. Cal. Mar. 13, 2013, No. C 13 1124 JST).

See the attached certification, publicly filed on ECF / PACER system.

A MOTORIST, high on drugs and drunk, thought he was dead after he ploughed into three pedestrians, hit a fire hydrant and smashined into a flower stand.

Shaun Martin, 32, of Queens, New York, allegedly asked police “Am I dead?”, the New York Post reported.

“Was I driving?” Martin allegedly told police officers at the crash in New York on June 19, court papers showed.

Manhattan Supreme Court heard that Martin was high on PCP and methylamphetamine when he careered across three lanes and hit a fire hydrant, 300-pound muni meter, 25-foot Gingko Tree, a light pole, a Citi Bike and three bystanders.

Martin was allegedly more concerned about his mother than the victims.

“Don’t call my mother, she’s going to be upset,” he said after his arrest.

A deli worker was the most seriously injured with broken bones and brain trauma.

Martin was charged with vehicular assault, DUI and criminal possession.

“This defendant is charged with seriously injuring pedestrians and destroying thousands of dollars’ worth of property due to his extraordinarily reckless behaviour,” said District Attorney Cy Vance.

(AP) — Vice President Joe Biden has asked Ecuador to turn down an asylum request from National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, the country’s president said Saturday.

Rafael Correa, in a weekly television address, offered little sympathy for the Obama administration’s view that Snowden is a criminal who should be swiftly returned to the U.S. At the same time, he vowed to seek American input on any asylum request and suggested Snowden will have to answer for his actions.

The Friday phone call between Correa and Biden — it’s the highest-level conversation between the U.S. and Ecuador to be disclosed since Snowden began seeking asylum — added to the confusion about Snowden’s status. Facing espionage charges in the U.S., Snowden is believed to be holed up in a Moscow airport’s transit zone and seeking safe passage to Ecuador, the country seen as likeliest to shelter America’s most wanted fugitive.

Julian Assange, founder of the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks, has been given asylum in Ecuador’s embassy in London.

Correa said he had a “friendly and very cordial” conversation with Biden, and told the vice president that Ecuador hadn’t sought to be put in the situation of deciding whether to harbor an American justice-dodger. He said Ecuador can’t consider the asylum request until Snowden is on Ecuadorean soil.

“The moment that he arrives, if he arrives, the first thing is we’ll ask the opinion of the United States, as we did in the Assange case with England,” Correa said. “But the decision is ours to make.”

White House spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan confirmed that the two leaders spoke by phone Friday and discussed Snowden, but she wouldn’t disclose any details about the conversation.

A staunch critic of the U.S., Correa rebuked the Obama administration for hypocrisy, invoking the case of brothers Roberto and William Isaias, bankers whose extradition from the U.S. Correa said Ecuador has been seeking. “Let’s be consistent. Have rules for everyone, because that is a clear double-standard here,” he said.

The leftist leader sought to direct attention away from Snowden’s actions and back to the U.S. spying secrets he exposed, summoning a theme he’s invoked to the delight of his strongest backers since Snowden, a former NSA contractor, revealed the agency’s massive Internet and phone surveillance to two newspapers, fleeing all the while from Hong Kong to Moscow in evasion of U.S. authorities.

“The really grave thing is what Snowden has reported,” Correa said. “He will have to assume his responsibilities, but the grave thing is his reporting of the biggest massive spy operation in the history of humanity, inside and outside the United States.”

Ecuadorean officials have acknowledged its embassy in London issued Snowden a letter of safe passage that calls on other countries to allow him to travel to asylum in Ecuador. But Ecuador’s secretary of political management, Betty Tola, said the letter was invalid because it was issued without central government approval in Quito, the capital.

Obama and his aides have tempered their rhetoric about Snowden in recent days after more heated attempts to pressure China and Russia over his extradition raised tensions with those nations, threatening to undercut cooperation with the two major powers on other issues.

But Ecuador has seemed to delight in tweaking the U.S. over the issue, accusing America of human rights violations and blowing off warnings about how the U.S. might respond if Ecuador doesn’t cooperate.

After the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., on Wednesday threatened an effort to block renewal of Ecuador’s tariff benefits on hundreds of millions of dollars in trade, Ecuador preemptively renounced the benefits themselves, claiming the trade deal had become “a new instrument of blackmail.”

As for Biden, Correa suggested it wasn’t personal. He praised the vice president for being more courteous than “those badly behaved and confused ones in the Senate who threaten our country.”

Snowden asks Ecuador for asylum

Breaking news

Edward Snowden, the former US intelligence contractor who leaked classified documents revealing US internet and phone surveillance, has asked Ecuador for asylum.

The request was confirmed by Ecuador’s foreign minister on Twitter.

Mr Snowden had fled the US for Hong Kong but flew out on Sunday morning and is currently in Moscow.

The US wanted him extradited, but the Hong Kong government said Washington had failed to meet its requirements.

Ecuador’s Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino, who is in Vietnam, said on Twitter: “The Government of Ecuador has received an asylum request from Edward J. #Snowden.”

The announcement came after the Ecuadorian ambassador to Russia told reporters he would meet Mr Snowden and a representative from Wikileaks for talks on Sunday.

Mr Snowden arrived on Aeroflot flight SU213 and landed at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport at 17:10 local time (13:10 GMT). He was picked up at the airport by either a Venezuelan or Ecuadorean embassy car.

A source at the airline company was quoted earlier as saying that Mr Snowden would fly on to Cuba.

It is unclear where Mr Snowden currently is, but he is reported to have not left the airport.
