Organizing for Action Uses Gadsden Flag to Push Obamacare

A pro-Obama group pushing Obamacare is using a rendition of the Gadsden flag, often used by tea party members, on a bumper sticker it is giving away.

The bumper sticker, put out by Organizing for Action, has a stethoscope in the shape of a rattlesnake, like the original flag, but instead of the phrase “Don’t Tread on Me” it says, “Don’t Tread on My Obamacare.”

“This is for everyone who’s tired of hearing the other side talk smack about healthcare reform that is helping millions of Americans get affordable, quality care,” Jon Carson, OFA executive director, said on Facebook.

“They’ve spent hundreds of millions to tear it down. We’ve worked hard to make sure they didn’t succeed,” he added. “If you’re like me, you’re pretty proud of that. Want to brag about it?”

The group is a spin-off from President Barack Obama’s 2012 presidential campaign, and it often works in support of the president’s agenda.

The group began a door-to-door Obamacare campaign in February to help increase enrollment in the new healthcare law.

The Gadsden flag was originally created during the American Revolution, and was inspired by a cartoon created by Benjamin Franklin in 1754 depicting a rattlesnake broken into 13 parts, with each part representing one of the colonies, with the phrase “Join, or Die.”

The Gadsden flag is commonly seen carried by tea party members at rallies across the country.

Has the Conservative Political Action Conference Purged the Kooks?

In the bowels of the National Harbor convention center in suburban Maryland on Thursday, a nonprofit called Empact America schooled attendees about the threat of a terrorist attack by way of an electromagnetic pulse. Former Reagan Defense Department official Frank Gaffney articulated his view that anti-tax activist and American Conservative Union board member Grover Norquist is an undercover agent for the Muslim Brotherhood. Ginni Thomas, a Daily Caller contributor and wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, alleged that President Barack Obama may be guilty of providing material support for terrorism. At least one panelist suggested that Speaker of the House John Boehner was a part of the Benghazi cover-up. (Who can say?)

But this gathering of very concerned right-wingers wasn’t an official part of the annual Conservative Political Action Conference underway in the same facility. The panelists were the “uninvited”—a motley crew of conservative activists who had been shunned by CPAC organizers and assembled, for the second consecutive year, as a sort of shadow convention by Breitbart News. After building a reputation for catering to conspiracy theorists and bigots (especially during the first five years of the Obama administration), CPAC, the nation’s largest annual conservative political shindig, seems to have turned down the volume.

That is, CPAC is getting soft.

Just consider the recent history. In 2012, CPAC organizers opened up their conference to folks like John Derbyshire (since fired from the National Review for telling his kids to avoid black people), and the founder of VDare.com, celebrating the first English child born in North America. Last year, Wayne Allyn Root, who attempted to swing the 2012 election by claiming Obama attended Columbia as a foreign exchange student, spoke from a CPAC side stage. Three years ago, Thomas Woods, a founder of the secessionist group League of the South, spoke at a CPAC breakout session and held a book signing. Last year, a Fox News commentator made a rape joke about a rape victim. There have even been CPAC panels on the supposed Muslim Brotherhood takeover of CPAC.

None of these figures appear on the CPAC schedule this year. Nor does Pamela Geller, who once published a scoop claiming that Obama was the secret love child of Malcolm X. She was exiled from CPAC in 2013. Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.), a leader of the movement that believes the conservative movement is being co-opted by stealth Islamists, didn’t make the trip this year. Bishop Harry Jackson, who claims gays are trying to “recruit” children, is nowhere in sight, even though he’s from suburban Maryland. Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), the Republican party’s most prominent anti-immigrant voice, didn’t get a speaking slot.

Oh, at this year’s CPAC there was still the Georgia man who travels the country dressed up as Declaration of Independence signer Button Gwinnett. There were plenty of bow ties. And two college-age bros walked around in American-flag boxers and boat shoes—which is to say, they walked around like college-age bros. CPAC was still, very noticeably, CPAC. There was the now-annual controversy about refusing to allow an LGBT conservative group, GOProud, to cosponsor the conference. Donald Trump was there, Donald Trumping.

But for the first time in a long while, the lunatics haven’t taken over the CPAC asylum. At least not yet.

China will take "forceful" action if incited to war

China will take

China will fight back “forcefully” if any country tries to challenge its “bottom line” and drag China into war, a political adviser and former Defense Ministry official said on Tuesday.

Qian Lihua, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, made the remarks as China faces serious challenges over territorial and maritime disputes.

Some of China’s neighbors, including Japan and the Philippines, have acted against China, illegally taking over Chinese islands and stepping up their military presence in a way that targets the country.

“We don’t expect any kind of war to break out and we hope to control crises and prevent warfare. We want to resolve conflicts and remain peaceful. But China cannot realize those goals alone,” said Qian, a major general who used to head the foreign affairs office under the Ministry of National Defense.

“It requires all countries in the region to cooperate closely and to make a joint contribution to regional peace and stability,” he added.

In an earlier interview with Xinhua News Agency, Qian said that one cannot completely rule out the possibility of clashes in East Asia, and singled out Japan as a potential problem.

“Japan has lost its direction, and has been taken advantage of by right-wing forces to challenge the international order created after World War II,” Qian said.

But he said it is impossible and impractical for Japan’s right-wing or militaristic forces to cause major trouble, chaos, conflicts and even war against China, as China is not in the same situation as it was in 1894 or the 1930s, when Japan waged war against China.

“Preserving peace and promoting economic development has become the common goal of every country,” Qian said.

The Asia-Pacific region has seen an increase in conflicts in recent years. Due to disputes over territory and maritime issues, many Asian countries have increased their military and national defense spending.

Among the top 15 military spenders in the world, China, Japan, India, South Korea and Australia all are in the Asia-Pacific region. Among them, the military spending from China, Japan and South Korea amounted to 64 percent of the region in 2013, Qian said.

While there has been speculation that Asian countries are now in an arms race, Qian refuted the notion.

“The arms race existed only during the Cold War, between NATO and the Warsaw Pact in the past, when regional organizations sought world hegemony with a bigger influence,” he said.

But now Asian countries have their own reasons to increase military spending and they are capable of doing so, but it does not mean the region has an arms race, Qian added.

As an official in charge of the foreign affairs of China’s military for years, Qian also responded to Western countries’ criticism that China’s military affairs are not transparent enough, saying that China has made great efforts to promote military transparency.

Qian said transparency should be a two-way street and called on the West not to use the issue of military transparency to pressure China.

“Before sufficient military trust is established, it’s impossible to realize military transparency,” he said.

Qian added that there is no international standard to measure a country’s military transparency.

“There is no complete transparency, not even among allies like NATO members,” he added.

“So the transparency should be a two-way mechanism. If you are open to me, I will be open to you. Otherwise, we could not open our military facilities to other countries,” Qian said, adding that transparency should be more than communication and mutual visits. About 2,200 members of the CPPCC National Committee are gathered in Beijing for the annual session of China’s top political advisory body.

Zhao Yanrong contributed to this story.

Waking Times

The age of the brain-computer interface is here, and technology has found a way to put brainwaves to practical use in the material world.

Electroencephalography, or EEG, measures low-voltage electrical signals from the brain using sensors attached to the scalp and face. When neurons inside the brain fire off, for one reason or another, electrical signals are emitted, captured, amplified then sent to a computer for interpretation. Once the signals are captured, scientists and engineers can convert this information into software commands to control real, 3-dimensional objects.

This technology works by first ‘training’ the computer to recognize brainwave patterns, then maps those inputs to the control designs of the engineer. As is the case with human ingenuity, the results are mind-blowing. Here are 8 videos demonstrating the potential for human-brain interface technology, outside of the defense industry.

Mind Controlled Robotic Limbs

The ability to physically move things is something that most of us take for granted. Using surgically implanted electrodes, and using a mind-controlled robotic arm, this paralyzed woman is able to feed herself for the first time in a decade…

The Mind Controlled Word Processor

Samsung’s intendiX EEG based system allows users to type out messages in a basic word processor on a computer…

Samsung’s Tablet Computer Controlled by Brainwaves

At the Samsung research & development facility in Dallas, TX they are developing a tablet computer that performs simple operations based on the intentions of the user…

Mind Controlled Helicopters

Researchers and students at the University of Minnesota have developed a system for controlling robots, like this helicopter, with brain patterns of the user who wears an EEG cap

Open source, and hackable, The ‘Puzzle Box Orbit’ revealed at the show… Open source and hackable the puzzlebox is a consumer product that can be used to learn the basics of EEG control mapping…

Mind Controlled Performance Art

Artist Lisa Park has developed an performance art piece that controls synthesized sound to create beautiful water dances with her emotions…

Mind Controlled Skateboard

In a rather awesome example, this mind-controlled skateboard can reach a top speed of 32 miles per hour…

Mind Controlled Robotics

A student of robotics at Taiwan National university demonstrates mind-control of various robitics including a Lego robot…

This potential applications for this technology are enormous and this is proof that thoughts are indeed things.

Action Star Seagal Mulls Ariz. Governor Bid

Action-movie star Steven Seagal says he is considering a run for Arizona governor.

The “Marked for Death” actor told KNXV-TV that he is considering a shot at the state’s highest office and has had a talk about the bid with the self-proclaimed toughest sheriff in America.

The 61-year-old made the comments while talking about his newly released reality series “Steven Seagal – Lawman: Maricopa County.”

Story continues below video.

Seagal teamed up with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio for the show that was shot in Arizona and airs on cable TV’s Reelz Channel.

He said the idea of a run for governor initially came up as a “joke” with Arpaio.

The martial arts expert is a member of Arpaio’s posse, made up of 3,000 unpaid civilians. He also has been deputized with sheriff’s offices in New Mexico, Texas, and Louisiana.

He says the nation’s top concern is “open borders” and that he wants to increase border security.

Google Moves Right by Funding ALEC and Heritage Action

TRANSCRIPT:

JESSICA DESVARIEUX, TRNN PRODUCER: Welcome to The Real News Network. I’m Jessica Desvarieux in Baltimore.

Corporate-funded American Legislative Exchange Council, or what it is more commonly known as, ALEC, is holding a conference celebrating its 40th anniversary through December 6. But the guest list may be running a little thin this year, as ALEC is losing some corporate friends. But it’s also gaining some new ones, like Google. Google has been funding right-wing groups like Heritage Action and ALEC, which is known for drafting some draconian laws in education and right-to-work policies which undermine collective bargaining.

Now joining us to discuss how Google is cozying up to the right is Nick Surgey. He is the director of research at the investigative reporting group the Center for Media and Democracy.

Thanks so much for joining us, Nick.

NICK SURGEY, DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH, CENTER FOR MEDIA AND DEMOCRACY: Thanks, Jessica.

DESVARIEUX: So, Nick, I’m sure people are hearing this story and saying, isn’t this just business as usual, corporations cozying up with ALEC? Or is this really more of a political statement, having Google supporting groups like ALEC?

SURGEY: Yeah, and I think for almost any other corporation that would probably be true. A lot of corporations fund both sides, and they’re unembarrassed about that. But, you know, Google has for many, many years, really since its conception, held itself up to be a different sort of Corporation. They spend a lot of time and effort and cash trying to project this progressive image. You know, they talk about the fact that they don’t do evil, and over their history they’ve funded a lot of progressive groups, a lot of progressive causes. They’re investing more than $ 1 billion in renewable projects–they like to tell the world about that–renewable energy projects.

So it’s very surprising that they are funding these groups on the right. And it is something that’s new. It seems to have happened about 18 months ago. They hired a former two-term Republican member of the House from New York, who was seen as a pretty liberal Republican in New York, but it was New York. And she was hired–and The Times, The New York Times at the time said that she was hired to lavish money from Google on selected Republicans. And that seems to be what has happened. But those selected Republicans turned out to have been some of the most extreme elements of the right wing of the Republican Party.

DESVARIEUX: And why this shift? I know you mentioned this is something new. But what sort of legislation would Google be interested in backing?

SURGEY: Well, you know, I mean, that’s difficult to tell. Google is transparent voluntarily. They do announce to the world the groups that they’re funding. And so in that sense, you know, that’s honorable. But they don’t announce how much money they’re giving and they don’t tell people why they’re funding these groups. And some of these groups certainly do have sort of tech freedom issues that they may be interested in.

ALEC for much of its 40-year history has worked to advance legislation that rolls back environmental protections, and there’s a number of bills that are on the agenda at the conference that you mentioned that’s happening just a few blocks away from me here in Washington, D.C. There’s a couple of bills that roll back the ability of the EPA to both regulate greenhouse gas emissions, and also to regulate fossil fuel power stations. There are some new antiunion bills.

And there’s a bill that’s goes after country-of-origin labeling, so when American consumers know where their products come from, they’re able to make an informed decision. And this is very much seen as a threat to particularly the Canadian pork industry, and they’ve been pushing back quite significantly, and this bill has popped up on the agenda at ALEC. You know. I mean, it’s entirely against the interests of American consumers. Americans want to know where their products are from. And when they do, they tend to buy American. And ALEC is actually pushing legislation or deciding on whether they should push this legislation tomorrow. They’re going to take a vote on it. That is against the interests of what most consumers want.

DESVARIEUX: Okay, Nick. I’m going to bring up the other side. Isn’t this just a expression of free speech? Why shouldn’t Google have the right to put their money where they want to?

SURGEY: Well, Google does, of course, and that’s fine. But for an organization, for a corporation that’s worked so hard to promote this progressive image–. You know. And I know people that work for Google, and, you know, they’re very progressive, and they believe strongly that they work for an organization that really does respect the values that they talk about, that they don’t do evil, that they–you know, $ 1 billion invested in renewable projects is not just a symbolic investment. That’s a huge amount of money. And so it’s almost unthinkable, I think, a year and a half ago that Google would be spending money on groups like Heritage Action, who are really one of the most extreme groups operating in national Republican politics. They whole sway over so many elected officials and really were driving the agenda to try and shut the government down and keep it shut down in order to try and get a full repeal of the Affordable Care Act. And that angered a lot of Republicans. And Google has helped fund that effort by providing resources to Heritage Action.

DESVARIEUX: Just really briefly, Nick, does Google fund left-wing groups as well?

SURGEY: It does, yeah, it does, and it has done for very many years, you know, and it appears to be continuing to do that. So what’s new is that now Google is funding both sides. It’s going to be difficult for them to continue to say that they are truly a progressive Corporation at heart when they’re doing now the same as every other corporation does, which is that they fund everyone because they want to try and influence legislation that benefits their bottom line. And that’s regrettable.

Netanyahu: Bad Iran Deal Could Leave Military Action As Only Option

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that the plan currently being formulated by world leaders to keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons will not be effective.

“This is a bad deal,” Netanyahu said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

He said that global leaders should increase sanctions on Iran, not loosen them.

“I think, if you want a peaceful solution, as I do, then the right thing to do is ratchet up the sanctions,” he said. ”Iran is practically giving away nothing. It’s making a minor concession, which they can reverse in weeks, and you endanger the whole sanctions regime that took years to make.”

Netanyahu argued that an imperfect deal could backfire and force the U.S. and other to used the military option.

“If you do a bad deal, you may get to the point where your only option is a military option,” he said. “So a bad deal actually can lead you to exactly the place you don’t want to be.”

CHICAGO/NEW YORK (Reuters) – The first day of trading options in Twitter was an active one, with more than 50,000 contracts trading in less than two hours on Friday, a week after the social media name debuted in the equity market.

A total of 27,000 calls and 26,000 puts changed hands on Twitter Inc as of 11:13 a.m. EST, according to options analytics firm Trade Alert. Investors use options to bet on or hedge against a stock’s direction.

Twitter shares were down 1.6 percent to $ 43.99 on Friday. Twitter went public on November 6 at $ 26 a share. On its first day of trading the stock rose to $ 50 a share, before pulling back.

Strategists say Twitter could become one of the more active names in the options market, judging by trading in other technology companies.

“Given that peer Facebook now leads single stock average daily option volume, followed by Apple and then Microsoft, Twitter options are likely to be very active,” said Henry Schwartz, president of options analytics firm Trade Alert.

So far, the most heavily traded contracts were the February 2014 $ 50 strike calls followed by the December $ 40 strike put, each trading more than 2,500 contracts thus far. Call options give the buyer the right to buy a stock at a certain price by a specific expiration date, while put options convey the right to sell shares by a certain date at a specific price.

There are a total of 540 options contracts spanning 11 expirations, ranging from short-term options known as weeklies to longer term January 2016 contracts called Leaps.

Facebook Inc set a record with its first-day options debut, when more than 365,000 contracts changed hands, Trade Alert data showed. “Hedgers and Twitter bears are likely to dominate the flow,” Schwartz said. “The stock is still difficult to borrow.”

The cost to borrow Twitter shares for short bets was between 8 and 10 percent annualized, according to Markit. That’s down from the 20 percent level when shorting started earlier this week, but still more than the likes of Facebook and LinkedIn, both of which carry costs of less than 1 percent.

Strikes range from $ 25 to $ 65, with dollar increments in non-Leap options, and 50-cent strike increments for some of the weekly term options. The first weekly expiration is November 22.

The options order flow for Twitter during Friday’s trading will depend on how the options market prices risk.

A stock’s historical volatility helps market makers determine what they believe implied, or expected volatility will be. Implied volatility measures the perceived risk for future stock movement.

With only five days of data, realized volatility is currently around 50 percent, said Enis Taner, global macro editor of options trading firm RiskReversal.com in a report on Friday.

Action alert: Just 2 days left to help stop the FDA"s regulatory war on small, local farmers

(NaturalNews) There are only two days left to post your comments to the FDA concerning the agency’s desire to place onerous new food safety regulations on small, local farmers (while allowing big agribusiness to conduct business as usual).

Click here to read the full alert at Cornucopia.org.

This is all about the “Food Safety Modernization Act” or FSMA. As Cornucopia states, “regulators and corporate agribusiness are using the FSMA to competitively crush the organic and local farming movements at the same time.”

As Cornucopia states, many in the industry believe the FDA is using FSMA as a regulatory weapon rather than a tool solely intended for public safety. This regulatory weapon is being used, they say, to drive small organic farmers out of business, thereby delivering greater market share and profitability to the agri-business giants that can afford to deal with all the burdensome regulations.

Cornucopia has issued a full action alert here.

The Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance has also posted an action alert on this issue, stating:

The FDA wants to be able to revoke farmers’ and producers’ exemptions without respecting basic principles of fairness and due process… In essence, this means that any farmer or producer targeted by the FDA for revocation of its exemption will almost certainly go out of business.

Click here to read the Farm and Ranch Freedom alert which describes this issue in much greater detail.

Click here for full instructions and links on how to submit your own comments to the FDA.

You MUST submit your comments by Friday, November 15th. Furthermore, if you do not submit comments and you ever go to court with the FDA over food safety issues on your farm, the fact that you did not submit comments has been deemed by the courts to automatically mean you have waived your rights to disagree with the FDA’s rules!

Thus, if you are a farmer or food producer of any kind, submitting your comments is essential to protecting your future rights in any possible litigation involving the FDA.

The FDA has taken some positive actions lately, including banning trans fats and requiring dog food manufacturers to follow Good Manufacturing Practices, but this FSMA effort is overreaching, unduly burdensome and in some ways actually worsens food safety instead of improving it.

Join Natural News in filing your comments against these onerous FDA regulations that target small farmers.

VIDEO: Grumpy Harrison Ford Roles: Allie Fox 6

The Mosquito Coast is an intriguingly unique entry in Harrison Ford’s career, given that it’s one of the few times he headlined a movie as a morally questionable character who doesn’t feel like a hero. Based on a true story, Ford plays an eccentric and embittered man who, for some reason, decides to move his family to Central America to build an ice factory in the middle of the jungle. That’s a pretty crazy idea, and sure enough, it goes disastrously wrong. Ford battles his family, the locals and even nature as his character attempts to live out an impossible dream. It’s one of the most uncharacteristic roles Ford ever played, and one of his finest performances. More importantly, the character is easily one of his greatest grumps, even bordering on being a full-blown ass. If you like Harrison Ford at his grumpiest, this unjustly forgotten gem from Peter Weir and Paul Schrader is definitely worth a look.
