Calif. Professor Charged in Clash With Teen Abortion Protester

A feminist studies associate professor at the University of California-Santa Barbara is facing criminal charges, accused of stealing a sign from an anti-abortion protester on campus and then physically attacking the teenager in an incident that was captured on a cellphone video.

Mireille Miller-Young, an associate professor, was charged with misdemeanor counts of theft, battery, and vandalism, accused of  accosting 16-year-old Thrin Short. She is scheduled to be arraigned on April 4.

Short and her older sister, Joan, 21, were among a group distributing pamphlets for the nonprofit, anti-abortion group Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust in a free speech zone on campus on March 4 when Miller-Young became disruptive.

“Before she grabbed the sign, she was mocking me and talking over me in front of the students, saying that she was twice as old as me and had three degrees, so they should listen to her and not me,” Short wrote in an email to FoxNews.com. “Then she started the chant with the students about ‘tear down the sign.’ When that died out, she grabbed the sign.”

The Short sisters and two other UC-Santa Barbara students followed Miller-Young, who specializes in and teaches courses on pornography, as she made off with the sign and tried to recover their property. After walking through an outdoor corridor and into a building, Miller-Young attempted to board an elevator with the sign. When Thrin Short blocked the elevator door from closing with her foot, Miller-Young “pushed and grabbed at the girl.”

“She then got off the elevator and tried to pull me away from the elevator doors so the others could get away with the sign,” Short wrote in her email to FoxNews.

Thrin Short, who suffered scratches on both wrists during the incident, captured much of the confrontation on video with her cellphone and has posted it on YouTube. She said campus police are now reviewing the video.

According to the Santa Barbara Independent, Miller-Young suggested in her interview with police that the activists had violated her rights by displaying upsetting imagery at her place of work and that she believed she had a “moral right” to take down the sign. She added that she is pregnant and was “triggered” by the graphic nature of the imagery on the sign.

It has not yet been determined whether Miller-Young faces any punishment from UC-Santa Barbara. A school spokesman declined to comment on personnel matters, per policy, but acknowledged the university was aware of the incident and said, “It is being reviewed by the appropriate offices.”

William Short, father of the two young activists, said Miller-Young went about her objection in the wrong way and that he hopes the impending legal proceeding will set a better example than she did.

“She was free to engage in a rational dialogue with them. Instead, she chose to bully them, steal and destroy their property, and hit and scratch my daughter,” Short told FoxNews. “After doing so, she said she thought she was setting a good example for her students. I think the goal of this prosecution should be to set a good example for her students, one that will not only deter her from repeating this conduct, but will also deter those who approve of her actions from imitating her appalling behavior.”

Pakistani teen who stopped suicide bomber to get posthumous award

A Pakistani teenager who sacrificed his life to stop a suicide bomber, saving the lives of hundreds of students, has been honoured with the country’s highest award for bravery.

Aitzaz Hassan, 15, a student in Hangu district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, has become a national hero after tackling the bomber who came to attack his school on Monday while hundreds of students were inside.

Hassan died in hospital after the bomber blew himself up at the school gates. No one else was wounded or killed in the incident.

The office of Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said it had advised President Mamnoon Hussain “to approve the conferment of Sitara-e-Shujjat (star of bravery) to Shaheed Aitzaz Hassan.

“Shaheed Aitzaz’s brave act saved the lives of hundreds of students and established a sterling example of gallantry and patriotism,” it said in a statement issued late Friday.

An official from the Prime Minister’s house told AFP on Saturday that Hassan’s family is expected to receive the posthumous award on March 23, Pakistan‘s national day, following the president’s ceremonial approval.

News of Hassan’s act led to an outpouring of tributes on social media.

Pakistani newspapers, TV channels and social media sites had demanded recognition for Hassan’s bravery, calling him a hero who should receive the nation’s highest award.

Locals from Hassan’s village, Ibrahimzai in Hangu district, and Pakistan army officers laid floral wreaths on his grave on Saturday as relatives looked on and wept.

Students held a vigil and carried placards condemning the killing and terrorism.

A military statement on Saturday said Brigadier Nadeem Zaki Manj, a local commander in Hangu, visited Hassan’s grave and laid a floral wreath on behalf of General Raheel Sharif, the head of Pakistan’s army.

The commander also conveyed Sharif’s “rich tributes to the bereaved family on the bravery and sacrifice” of their son, the statement added.

“The Nation is proud of this young Hero who has set a sterling example of bravery and sacrifice… he has sacrificed his today for our better tomorrow,” the army chief said in a message for Hassan’s father.

Hundreds of fellow students prayed for Hassan in the morning school assembly.

Shahban Mahdi, a classmate of Hassan, told AFP: “I am proud of what he did. I owe my life to him — had it not been for Aitzaz Hassan, none of us would be alive.”

Habib Ali, one of Hassan’s teachers, added: “His classmates miss him…but they promise they will not forget him always and will keep his memory alive. And we say to all terrorists: you cannot stop us, and we will keep on studying.”

Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai, who survived being shot in the head by the Taliban for championing girls’ right to education, paid tribute to the teenager on Friday, describing him as “brave and courageous.”

“In sacrificing his own life, Aitzaz protected hundreds of innocent young students from being killed,” she said in a statement.

“I wish that in giving his own life he helps to bring peace to my people and my country,” she said.

Hassan’s father Mujahid Ali Bangash, 55, told AFP on Thursday he felt not sadness but pride at his son’s death.

“Aitzaz has made us proud by valiantly intercepting the bomber and saving the lives of hundreds of his fellow students,” he said.

“I am happy that my son has become a martyr by sacrificing his life for a noble cause.”

Bangash works in the UAE and was only able to reach Ibrahimzai village, which lies in an area of Hangu dominated by minority Shiite Muslims, the day after his son’s funeral.

Police official Shakirullah Bangash told AFP on Thursday that Aitzaz intercepted the bomber 490 feet away from the main gate of the school, which has about 1,000 students.

Terri Schiavo"s Family Joins Fight for Teen on Life Support

A foundation started on behalf of Terri Schiavo, whose case sparked a national right-to-die debate, says it’s been secretly helping the family of of a 13-year-old brain dead California girl fight to keep her on life support.

The Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Network said in a statement it’s been involved in the case of Jahi McMath in “relative silence,” as her family searched for a long-term care facility to care for her.

McMath’s family says it found a facility in New York; doctors at Children’s Hospital Oakland assert there’s no hope for her recovery. She was declared brain dead after complications from a routine tonsillectomy Dec. 12.

“Together with our team of experts, Terri’s Network believes Jahi’s case is representative of a very deep problem within the U.S. healthcare system — particularly those issues surrounding the deaths of patients within the confines of hospital corporations, which have a vested financial interest in discontinuing life,” the foundation said.

Schiavo’s case sparked a national debate in the ’90s as doctors, lawyers and family members battled over whether to remove Schiavo’s feeding tube. She died in 2005, nearly two weeks after doctors removed the device.

In the foundation statement about McMath, Bobby Schindler, Terri Schiavo’s brother and executive director of the organization, noted: “Families and individuals must make themselves aware of what so-called ‘brain death’ is and what it is not. Every person needs to understand that medical accidents happen every day. Families and individuals must be more aware of the issue of accountability and patient rights.”

On Tuesday, a judge extended Jahi’s life support an hour before a federal court order keeping the hospital from unhooking her was set to expire. The deadline was extended to Jan. 7.

McMath family lawyer Christopher Dolan said Wednesday he’s fighting for a tracheostomy for Jahi.

“However, many surgeons and hospital administrators are on holiday making our goal difficult to reach,” he said in a statement posted on the foundations website.

“If Children’s Hospital Oakland would perform the procedure we could quickly move Jahi to a facility that provides innovative world-class treatments, of the type being given to Prime Minister Sharon in Israel.”

Dolan pleaded for a specialist to step forward “and give this mother the choice and this child a chance.”

Children’s Hospital Oakland declared last week it “does not believe that performing surgical procedures on the body of a deceased person is an appropriate medical practice,” ABC News reported.

Omari Sealey, Jahi’s uncle, said Wednesday the family still hopes to move her to another facility, CNN reported.

Stacey Dean Rambold pleaded guilty to raping a 14-year-old girl and served a month in prison.

Montana is fighting to get a former teacher back behind bars after he served only a month for raping a 14-year-old girl.

Prosecutors filed an appeal Friday questioning the controversial 31-day sentence imposed on Stacey Dean Rambold, whose victim took her own life.

Rambold, a former high school teacher, pleaded guilty to the rape. He was sentenced in August and released from a Montana prison on probation the next month.

A handcuffed 17-year-old North Carolina boy died of gunshot wounds in a Durham Police Department patrol car Tuesday morning, according to a 911 recording made public Wednesday.

Jesus Huerta was being transported to police headquarters on a trespassing charge by officer Samuel A.M. Duncan when, in the department’s parking lot, Duncan heard the shot from the backseat and jumped out of the car, leaving it to roll into a van with Huerta still inside, Durham police said.   

In the recording of the 911 call, a police officer radioed emergency dispatchers just before 3 am EST Tuesday morning to report “shots fired” in the parking lot of the station. The dispatcher asked the calling officer if he was hurt, according to the recording. “I don’t believe so,” the officer said in response.

The officer is heard asking for medical assistance for a “gunshot wound. Approximately 18-year-old male, not breathing.”

Ahead of the released recording, later on the morning of Huerta’s death, Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez said his department didn’t know how the young man died, but said “based on the preliminary investigation, it does not appear that any Durham police officer fired a weapon during this incident.”

The Durham Police Department would not comment Wednesday on the 911 recording or answer further questions, citing an ongoing investigation.

Huerta’s family was notified of Jesus’ death early Tuesday morning, but they were told they will not yet be able to view his body, taken to the state medical examiner’s office. A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services told WRAL there is no viewing room.

 “(My mother) wants to see my brother, even through a glass window,” said Evelin Huerta, Jesus’ sister.“We don’t have any answers. We want to make sure it’s him because we still have that thought, the possibility that it’s not him, that it was a mistake.”

Huerta’s older siblings, Evelin and Raziel Huerta, said Wednesday Durham police had not directly told the family how Jesus died, though they question any insinuation that he killed himself.

“Wasn’t he handcuffed? Did they search him?” Raziel Huerta said, according to the News & Observer.“He didn’t have a gun. If there was a gun, I don’t know where it came from. Was it on the seat?”

The two older siblings, speaking to reporters in front of their family’s apartment in Durham Wednesday afternoon, said their mother, Sylvia Fernandez, wanted to call the police because Jesus had left against her wishes.

Jesus had been playing video games in the apartment living room before leaving, Raziel said. He then wanted to go out, but his mother said it was too late. The siblings said she was worried for his safety and wanted police to find him. She doesn’t speak English, so she asked Evelin to call the police.

“All of a sudden, he opened the door and left,” Raziel, 27, said. “My mom felt scared and called the police.”

A recording of the 911 call the daughter made for her mother indicates Jesus left the house because his mother had caught him using drugs. The unnamed caller in the recording also said they were worried because Jesus had once “tried to take his life.”

“One time, he wanted to jump from the window” because “he thinks his mother does not love him,” the caller said to the dispatcher. Though the family said Wednesday he had never tried to kill himself, according to WRAL.

Raziel said his brother once tried to jump from a first-story window at their apartment, but because he wanted to get out of the house, not as a suicide attempt.

“He was hanging out, trying to be cool. He had, like, a little swagger,” Raziel Huerta said. “He was not depressed.”

The family told WRAL police appeared at the apartment about ten minutes after the call to police, then another officer radioed saying Jesus was picked up two blocks away from his home. The Huertas said they don’t yet have more information on the trespassing charge Jesus faced.

“Where was he trespassing?” Raziel asked. “He was walking down the street. It’s a free country.”

The siblings said their mother called police to protect Jesus.

“She’s saying next time she is going to doubt picking up the phone and calling a police man,” Evelin Huerta said.

Raziel Huerta said his brother – a student at Riverside High School, where he was known as “Chewy” - was a normal teen who liked video games and expressed desire to be a firefighter or an attorney.

Duncan, who joined the department in 2012, has been placed on administrative leave with pay during the investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation, Lopez said. He said the Durham Police Department’s homicide unit and its professional standards division are also looking into the case.

Florida high school student Malik Whiter has gone bonkers viral to the tune of 20,000+ retweets after posting a selfie while his pregnant teacher was experiencing contractions.

Millennials, man. Millennials.

The teacher, Susana Halleck, was on the phone telling her mother the situation was under control. (And it turned out that she wasn’t going into labor just yet as well.)

There’s so much to love here, from Whiter’s sheer joy and winning smile to his teacher’s “Oh my god I cannot have a baby in math class” expression. The image is already inspiring parodies of Malik taking selfies at what might charitably be described as inappropriate times (credits to Gawker commenters):

And of course this happened in Florida, America’s unsecured junk. Because where else?

Teen Birth Rate Hits Historic Low

(AP) – After falling four years in a row, US births may finally be leveling off. The number of babies born last year—a little shy of 4 million—is only a few hundred less than the number in 2011, according to a government report released today. That suggests that lately, fewer couples may be scared away from having children because of the economy or other factors, some experts say. Among the signs of a possible turning point: The birth rate for women in their early 30s inched up for the first time since 2007.

“We may be on level course or potentially even see a rise” in birth trends in the near future, says a statistician with the CDC. Some are a bit more pessimistic. “The decline has slowed down, but it’s still a decline,” says a birth-trends expert. (The all-time high was more than 4.3 million in 2007.) One decline that’s being welcomed: Birth rates for teen moms have been falling since 1991 and hit yet another historic low: 305,000 births last year—less than half the 645,000 in 1970. The teen birth rate has been cut in half since 1991, says a rep for the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy; he called it a “stunning turnaround.”

NEW YORK (AP) — From the earnest explanation of why Gary the Snail is her favorite “SpongeBob SquarePants” character to the name-check of rapper Lil Wayne, Victoria Duval made quite clear that she is very much a 17-year-old kid.

One who just so happened to stun 2011 champion Sam Stosur in the first round of the U.S. Open.

Overcoming the sort of nerves that derive from never before having played this highly ranked an opponent — let alone beaten one — and never before having won a match at a Grand Slam tournament, Duval hopped up and down with arms overhead after pulling off her big surprise at Flushing Meadows, a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory over the 11th-seeded Stosur.

“I don’t even remember match point,” the 296th-ranked American said Tuesday night, less than two hours after closing out Stosur with a forehand winner. “I guess I was really happy. I mean, you could tell by all the jumping I did.”

She wore a white towel around her neck, giggled at her own squeaky-voiced answers, and genuinely seemed to be enjoying the whole experience during a news conference that was a meandering affair, befitting Duval’s bubbly personality — and the long, unique journey that brought her to this point.

American teen Duval stuns ’11 champ Stosur at Open

Second Teen in Court Following Death of WWII Veteran

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — A second 16-year-old arrested in the beating death of an 88-year-old World War II veteran is scheduled to make a court appearance Tuesday as the first was being held on $ 2 million bail.

Demetrius L. Glenn made an initial court appearance Monday afternoon. He is charged in Spokane County District Court with first-degree murder and first-degree robbery. The charges carry a potential life sentence.

District Judge Richard Leland, presiding over a packed courtroom, said the brutality of the attack and vulnerability of the victim make the high bail proper. Glenn had turned himself in Thursday night, the same day Delbert Belton died of his injuries. The slightly built youth gave yes and no answers to questions from the judge but otherwise said nothing.

Defense attorney Chris Phelps noted after the hearing that the case has gone viral on the Internet, with many people expressing strong opinions. “The evidence doesn’t indicate what happened,” Phelps said, adding that witnesses only reported “two kids running away.”

The other suspect, Kenan Adams-Kinard, was arrested without incident early Monday on a warrant for first-degree murder and first-degree robbery. He has a court appearance scheduled for Tuesday and will also be tried as an adult.

“The two individuals we believe are responsible for the robbery and murder of Mr. Belton are in custody,” Police Chief Frank Straub said at a news conference.

The Associated Press does not generally identify minors accused of a crime but is naming the teens because of the severity of the charges.

Belton, who was wounded in the Battle of Okinawa, was beaten in his vehicle as he waited for a friend in the parking lot of an Eagles Lodge in north Spokane on Wednesday, and his wallet was taken.

Officers found Belton with serious head injuries and he died in the hospital Thursday.

Straub said it appeared that Belton fought back against his attackers, which may have increased the severity of his beating.

Police received a tip early Monday about Adams-Kinard’s location, Straub said. Three other juveniles in the house with the suspect were arrested for investigation of rendering criminal assistance, a felony.

Investigators believe the boys targeted Belton randomly. “There is no gang activity associated with this incident,” Straub said.

Both suspects have criminal records for assault, he said.

Straub said the case involved twin tragedies.

“It bothers me that a distinguished World War II veteran lost his life,” Straub said. But the lives of the young suspects are also likely ruined, he said.

Belton was born and raised in Spokane. He survived being shot in the leg in 1945 at Okinawa, one of the fiercest battles of the war, and went on to spend 33 years working for Kaiser Aluminum before retiring in 1982.

Belton was called Shorty by his friends because he was little more than 5 feet tall, his niece Pam Hansen said.

She believes he was targeted because of his age and size.
