Oklahoma Fox station cuts evolution from "Cosmos" by editing only 15 seconds

Oklahoma Fox station cuts evolution from

In what appeared to be an editing error, a Fox affiliate in Oklahoma managed to remove the only mention of evolution from Sunday night’s Cosmos science documentary by cutting only 15 seconds from the broadcast.

The much-anticipated reboot of Carl Sagan’s legendary Cosmos premiered on Sunday with an overview of the history of the Universe, from the Big Bang to the advent of humans.

It wasn’t until the last 10 minutes of the show that host Neil deGrasse Tyson hinted at human evolution.

“We are newcomers to the Cosmos,” he explained. “Our own story only begins on the last night of the cosmic year.”

“Three and a half million years ago, our ancestors — your and mine left these traces,” Tyson said, pointing to footprints. “We stood up and parted ways from them. Once we were standing on two feet, our eyes were no longer fixated on the ground. Now, we were free to look up and wonder.”

But for viewers of KOKH-TV in Oklahoma City, that 15 second paragraph was replaced by an awkwardly-inserted commercial for the evening news. The edit was caught on video and uploaded to YouTube by Adam Bates.

At least one of the segments advertised in the news promo — a story about a 12-year-old bow hunter — did air on that evening’s newscast.

Censored: After Skipping the IRS Scandal for Five Months, ABC Allows a Scant 22 Seconds

Five months after dropping coverage of the Internal Revenue Service scandal, ABC’s Good Morning America on Wednesday finally found time to allow a few seconds to mention the targeting of conservatives. CBS and NBC on Tuesday and Wednesday both ignored the fact that the Obama administration is doubling down and now attempting to rein in non-profit groups.

GMA‘s Josh Elliott blandly noted, “In the wake of the IRS targeting scandal, the Obama administration wants to limit the political influence of tax-exempt groups.” He added that the White House is seeking to create new “donation standards to curb the explosive growth in political spending.” Elliott added, “The IRS has been accused of unfairly scrutinizing groups affiliated with the Tea Party.” [MP3 audio here.]

Instead of covering this development, CBS This Morning donated five minutes and 27 seconds to the latest episode of Person of Interest (which airs on the same network).

NBC’s Today spent four minutes informing viewers how to deal with being a perfectionist.

Although ABC’s GMA covered the move by the Obama administration, it was only for 22 seconds. In comparison, the morning show obsessed over the season finale of Dancing With the Stars for 12 and half minutes. (Naturally, Dancing With the Stars is on ABC.)

Before Wednesday, it was way back on June 26, 2013 that ABC explained any of the scandals swirling around the IRS and its targeting of the Tea Party. It’s not as though there haven’t been new developments. The MRC’s Geoff Dickens in September highlighted the latest, such as this report from the Washington Times:

IRS employees were ‘acutely’ aware in 2010 that President Obama wanted to crack down on conservative organizations and were egged into targeting tea party groups by press reports mocking the emerging movement, according to an interim report being circulated Tuesday by House investigators.

On Wednesday, Washington Post writers Matea Gold and Tom Hamburger explained, “The Obama administration moved Tuesday to limit the expansive role that nonprofit groups play in politics, proposing a regulation that would rein in certain tax-exempt organizations that have been able to spend hundreds of millions of dollars in recent elections without revealing their donors.”

The Post journalists recounted:

This comes in the wake of the revelations earlier this year that IRS employees were using political terms such as “tea party” and “patriot” to screen for 501(c)(4) groups that were potentially engaging in excessive election-related activity.

The scandal led to congressional hearings and the departure of senior IRS officials, as well as charges by Republicans that the Obama administration was targeting groups based on their political leanings. In the aftermath, Treasury and IRS officials pledged to review the current “facts and circumstances” test used to ensure that 501(c)(4) groups are staying within the bounds of their “social welfare” mandate, saying there was a need for clearer guidance.

In July, over a mere three days, the network morning shows hyped the birth of the royal baby, offering more coverage in 72 hours than to all of the IRS scandal, up until that point.

A transcript of the November 27 GMA news brief is below:

7:11

JOSH ELLIOTT: In the wake of the IRS targeting scandal, the Obama administration wants to limit the political influence of tax-exempt groups. And thus, it is proposing new rules and donation standards to curb the explosive growth in political spending by non-profits. The IRS has been accused of unfairly scrutinizing groups affiliated with the Tea Party.

Monty Python Reunion Sold Out in 45 Seconds

(Newser) – Monty Python’s reunion gig sold out in less than a minute—and so did each of four added performances, according to Eric Idle, who’s directing the shows at London’s O2 Arena. “This pretty much took us by surprise,” Idle tweeted. Performances will run from July 1 through July 5, the Los Angeles Times reports. Will American fans get a show of their own? There could “possibly” be an encore in New York, John Cleese said, and Idle has also noted that a DVD is in the cards. The show will combine new and old Python routines.

EU spends cool $1.2 million researching how to chill beer in under 45 seconds

Daily Caller

Never mind the looming spectre of economic collapse. The European Union is pouring some of its funds towards researching how to chill beer really fast, The Daily Mail reports.

The makers of the Rapidcool device, London-based Enviro-Cool, claim that the product can cool beer cans and bottles to 4 degrees Celcius, or 39.5 degrees Fahrenheit, within 45 seconds.

The E.U. granted Enviro-Cool £760,000, or $ 1.2 million, in research funding to develop the device.

‘Gitmo Clock’ counts seconds since Obama’s unfulfilled pledge to free prisoners

Activists calling for closure of Guantanamo Bay prison have launched an online clock, which counts the time since President Obama’s latest promise to set free inmates whom the US cleared for release. So far all of the 86 men remain incarcerated.

The clock is a symbolic reminder of the fate of the 166 people who are currently kept in the controversial US facility.

Dozens of detainees are continuing their so-far six-month hunger strike, a gesture of despair from the people, who have little hope to ever be free, says Andy Worthington, a human rights activist who has been advocating for Guantanamo prisoners for years.

The promise to close Guantanamo prison was one of the key points of Barack Obama’s 2008 election campaign. One of his first moves as the president was an order to do so, yet the facility still remains active.

The latest pledge from the president regarding Gitmo inmates came in a key security policy speech in May, which came in response to the concerns over the hunger strike voiced by some international bodies, including the UN, the EU and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Obama said that 86 inmates, who were cleared for release in January 2010 by the inter-agency Guantanamo Review Task Force, would be given freedom. The majority of those on the list – 56 – are Yemenis. The number of people released so far is 0. In the last three years seven prisoners have left Guantanamo.

With a few exceptions, Guantanamo prisoners were never charged with any crimes or tried. Of the 80 inmates not cleared for release, 46 were recommended for indefinite detention without trial, because there was no sufficient evidence against them. The majority of those recommended for prosecution has not been put forward for trials, and are unlikely to be, according to General Mark Martins, the chief prosecutor of the military commissions.

US lawmakers demand that the presidential administration certifies that any Guantanamo prisoner released would not be able to engage in any terrorist activities against the US. Worthington argues that such a certification is almost impossible to make.

While Guantanamo inmates remain in legal limbo, a terrorist threat has returned to the frontline of the public discourse in the US this week. Washington issued a major alert and shut down dozens of its diplomatic outposts, mostly in the Middle East, Persian Gulf region and Africa. The US also evacuated non-essential staff from two facilities in Yemen and Pakistan, also warning its citizens that those countries are not safe for travel.

The terror alert came after an intercepted Al-Qaeda communication indicating a major plot against America, US officials explained. Some skeptics voiced their doubts, saying that the threat may have been blown out of proportion and that the alert is being used to justify the massive surveillance methods used by the US National Security Agency.

The existence of programs for dragnet collection of electronic data, which was made public by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, sparked a major scandal. The US maintains that the programs are lawful, efficient and morally justified methods to provide national security. Critics see it as a major violation of privacy.
