Inside TAO: Documents Reveal Top NSA Hacking Unit

posted on Dec, 29 2013 @ 03:50 PM

These driblets of information help to confirm what many know already. I have to say though that the mention of ‘Technical deficencies’ sounds a bit suspect, when we also already know some were compelled to accomodate the NSA anyway. The shipping gigs were also already around courtesy of the CIA and all their clandestine companies, only the tech is changing.
So this ‘Lady’ is spouting off about what they can do, or is it just a cover to make the NSA’s little helpers, like Microsoft and AOL etc, seem like innocent victims? Her and her cohorts are just feckdogs, and we know they like a bit of private enterprise on the side to boot…no wonder they are expanding rapidly!
I want them OTF, they are disrupting the common internet culture, with their noses stuck up our backsides, and their blocking keywords and so on…blah blah. NSA feck off!

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Barclays Plc (BARC.L) is exploring options for its index business after equity index provider MSCI Inc (MSCI.N) approached the British bank recently about buying the unit, according to several people familiar with the situation.

MSCI’s approach has spurred early-stage discussions at Barclays, and it has not yet decided whether it should sell the Barclays Indices platform, which includes well-known products like the Barclays U.S. Aggregate Bond Index, which tracks assets with a market value of $ 16.7 trillion, the sources said.

All of the sources wished to remain anonymous because they are not permitted to speak to the media.

It could not be determined how much Barclays would get if it decides to sell the unit or how much MSCI has offered.

Barclays declined to comment. An MSCI spokeswoman was not able to provide comment immediately.

Barclays lists 88 major indices on its website, but the bank offers thousands of benchmarks and indices, many of which it creates for clients.

Almost $ 2.3 trillion in exchange-traded product and mutual funds track Barclays indexes, making it the second-biggest index provider after Standard & Poor’s, according to Lipper. That does not include other pools of assets that track the indices, like institutional separate accounts and collective trusts.

The U.S. Aggregate Bond Index, which Barclays bought as part of the Lehman Brothers acquisition during the financial crisis, is among the platform’s best-known offerings. With investors pouring money into fixed income, passively managed exchange-traded funds and mutual funds, Barclays could get a good premium if it decides to sell the business, industry experts said.

Since January of 2008, investors have poured $ 1.2 trillion into fixed income mutual funds and ETFs, according to Lipper.

“If you listen to the exchange-traded fund managers, they all say that fixed income is their area of focus,” said Deborah Fuhr, founding partner of ETGI, a London-based ETF consultant and research firm.

One executive at a large provider of index funds and ETFs said that their firm is always asking index providers to expand their fixed-income offerings.

“I have suggested to each and every one of them to broaden their business to fixed income,” said the executive. “MSCI would be a natural buyer for that business since they need more fixed income.”

NEW YORK/LONDON (Reuters) – Goldman Sachs (GS.N) plans to resume talks with parties interested in buying its metals warehousing business now that new exchange rules have been released, a source familiar with the matter said on Monday.

The talks with potential buyers, which are largely firms based outside the United States, are not part of a formal sales process, the source said.

Metro International Trading Services, which stores aluminum and other metals as part of the London Metal Exchange (LME) warehouse system, has been at the center of a controversy around Wall Street’s ownership of physical commodity assets.

That controversy heated up after the bank was accused of boosting wait times and prices for metals consumers including makers of drink cans and cars.

More than a dozen parties have expressed an interest in buying the business, according to the Financial Times, which first reported the talks earlier on Monday.

The paper said several of the potential buyers were Chinese firms, including Chinese insurer Ping An and China Minmetals. Brazilian bank Grupo BTG Pactual SA (BBTG11.SA) is also actively looking at warehouse assets, trade and industry sources say.

Goldman looked at a possible sale of Metro earlier this year but put those efforts on hold while the LME reviewed the rules governing warehouses. The exchange earlier this month proposed new rules to crack down on the wait times for metals delivery, providing more clarity for warehouse owners.

The Federal Reserve announced a review of Wall Street’s role in physical commodities trading in July.

Goldman has recently insisted it remains committed to its commodities businesses even as rivals, including JPMorgan (JPM.N), have announced they are selling assets and exiting physical trading.

Fed Vice Chairman Janet Yellen, speaking last week at a Senate hearing on her nomination to become chairman of the central bank, said for the first time that the Fed may create new rules as part of its review.

Regulatory and legal experts say the most likely target is the banks’ direct ownership of warehouses, power plants, oil storage tanks and other infrastructure.

Goldman has said that Metro was bought under a “private equity exemption” that would allow the bank to own the business for up to 10 years as long as it operates at arm’s length from its commodities traders.

Fed-regulated banks are generally barred from owning physical assets such as warehouses and pipelines, but Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley (MS.N) have said they have the right to retain businesses they operated prior to converting to commercial banks at the peak of the financial crisis.

The bank bought Metro in 2010 for around $ 500 million.

Expert: “There may be an accident of criticality” during fuel removal at Fukushima Unit 4 — TV: Rods could crumble, frightening that Tepco is in charge of potential catastrophe (VIDEOS)

AFP, Nov. 7, 2013: Experts warn that any slip-ups could quickly cause the situation to deteriorate. Even minor mishaps will create considerable delays to the already long and complicated decommissioning. If the rods are exposed to the air they would release radiation and could heat up, a process that if left unchecked could lead to a self-sustaining nuclear reaction. TEPCO says that is unlikely, but sceptics say that with so many unknowns in the novel operation, there is potential for a catastrophe. [...] “Any trouble in this operation will considerably affect the timetable for the entire project,” he said. “This is an operation TEPCO cannot afford to bungle.” Hiroaki Koide, assistant professor at Kyoto University Reactor Research Institute in Kyoto, said success was far from guaranteed. “It is not easy work,” he said. The comments reflect an increasingly widespread view that the giant utility is not capable of dealing with the mess its nuclear plant has created.

The Real News, Nov. 8, 2013 — Arjun Makhijani, President of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research, Ph.D. in engineering (specialization: nuclear fusion) from the University of California at Berkeley (at 2:30 in): The spent fuel may be difficult to dislodge because it’s no longer in its proper original position. The fuel rods may break, and the fuel may wind up at the bottom of the reactor in the spent fuel pool. There may be an accident of criticality. I haven’t examined their plans in detail, but I do think it is very essential to remove this spent fuel, because in my judgment, the bigger danger is leaving it there and waiting for the earthquake to happen.

Watch the extended interview with Arjun Makhijani here

RT, Nov.7, 2013 — Kevin Kamps, Beyond Nuclear: The fuel itself could be bent, it could be damaged, it could be corroded. They used salt water at one point to cool the nuclear waste in this pool, which could have corroded the assemblies. They could break apart; they could crumble when they go to try to remove them. Even the director of the nuclear regulation authority of Japan has warned that this process should not be rushed; they should not try to force these assemblies out of their storage channels. But they have to get them out before a bigger earthquake takes the building down, the cooling water would drain away, and the waste with them will catch on fire. There is no radiological containment around the pool and if this waste would catch fire it could be 10 times worse than Chernobyl. That’s how much radioactivity is stored in that pool. Just in terms of the radioactive cesium content. [...]  It’s absurd that Tokyo Electric is in charge of this globally significant extracting of the fuel from the pool. If something goes wrong, this could be a global catastrophe that dwarfs what has happened on Fukushima Daiichi thus far. Tokyo Electric has shown its true colors time and time again, its incompetence and its dishonesty, so it’s very frightening that Tokyo Electric is in charge of this.

Germany investigates commander of Nazi-led unit

BERLIN (AP) — German prosecutors said Monday that they opened a formal preliminary investigation of a Minnesota man who was a commander of a Nazi-led unit during World War II, to determine whether there is enough evidence to bring charges and seek his extradition.

The Associated Press found that 94-year-old Michael Karkoc entered the U.S. in 1949 by lying to American authorities about his role in the SS-led Ukrainian Self Defense Legion, which is accused of torching villages and killing civilians in Poland. AP’s evidence indicates that Karkoc was in the area of the massacres, although no records link him directly to atrocities.

Kurt Schrimm, the head of the special German prosecutors’ office responsible for investigating Nazi-era crimes, said prosecutors “have opened a preliminary investigation procedure to examine the matter (and) seek documentation.” It was unclear how long their examination might take.

Schrimm’s office is responsible for determining whether there is enough evidence against alleged Nazi war criminals for state prosecutors to proceed with a full investigation and possible charges. The only charges that can be brought in such cases are murder and accessory to murder, as all other offenses fall under the statute of limitations under German law.

Germany has taken the position that people involved in Nazi crimes must be prosecuted, no matter how old or infirm, as it did in the case of retired Ohio autoworker John Demjanjuk, who died last year at age 91 while appealing his conviction as a guard at the Sobibor death camp.

Poland’s National Remembrance Institute, which investigates Nazi and Soviet crimes, has said prosecutors are reviewing files on Karkoc’s unit for any evidence that would justify charges and an extradition request.

It says the files were gathered during separate investigations into the killings of civilians in the village of Chlaniow, in southeastern Poland, and into Nazi suppression of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising against German occupation. The AP found documentation showing that Karkoc’s unit was involved in both.

Karkoc told U.S. authorities in 1949 that he had performed no military service during World War II, according to records obtained by the AP through a Freedom of Information Act request

The U.S. Department of Justice has used lies in immigration papers to deport dozens of suspected Nazi war criminals. But the department had no comment on the German decision to investigate Karkoc when contacted Monday by AP in Washington.

Karkoc’s son, Andriy Karkos, has said that his father “was never a Nazi,” and pointed to the portion of the AP story that said records don’t show Karkoc had a direct hand in war crimes. He has said the family won’t comment further until it has obtained its own documents and reviewed witnesses and sources.

A woman who answered the phone at Karkoc’s Minneapolis home Monday refused to comment when a reporter from the AP made contact.
