Hopefully Helpful Thoughts For Guiding Political Discussion

Political discussion is something many shy way from, as it can get rather personal at times. It\’s easy to veer off-topic and have parties attacking one another personally rather than focusing on issues. To help avoid this and preserve the mutually beneficial exchange of ideas, here are some tips.

Focus for a moment on labels. Labeling can lead to problems in a couple ways – both by adding connotations to the discussion and over-simplifying problems as they are being discussed. Considering trying to ignore which party or candidate formulated a particular plan or idea, and instead examine them based upon merits alone instead.

That said, it can help to ignore the media at the time as well. Whether you are talking about issues past or present, media of any kind can often – sometimes even inadvertently – take a stance on what\’s being talked about. If nothing else, news is often delivered by personalities people have a rapport with, which can make their delivery colored by association alone.

Another move towards hanging onto objectivity could be involving someone as a neutral mediator. This person\’s job may just be keeping the conversation on-topic but might also be to aid others in remaining calm when the talk gets intense. Mediators can also be used to offer relevant information on current topics as well as providing new ones as they are needed.

These guidelines can also resemble those of a debate, but don\’t worry. These suggestions are actually intentionally similar to those used for debates because they are proven to work in just about any situation. If it works, you shouldn\’t be too shy about using it.

Hopefully political discussion doesn\’t sound so intimidating to you now. Remember that passions may strain relationships between people, but they should never break bonds of friendship as a result of a different of opinion. Good luck with your talks and remember to keep it fun.
