One of the most popular book series in recent years is The Hunger Games. The first book of the series, The Hunger Games was released in 2008. Since then, the series has taken off much like that of Harry Potter and Twilight. The Hunger Games were a punishment and a reminder to the people of the districts that Panem is in control and that human life is precious. Also by sacrificing 24 children every year to the battle to the death the districts are reminded not to rebel like the \”non-existent\” District 13. In the 74th annual Hunger Games the selected players from District 12 were Peeta Mellark and Primrose Everdeen. Since Primrose was just 12 years old, her older sister Katniss volunteered in her place as tribute-an extremely noble act. Once entering the arena, Peeta and Katniss were instructed to present themselves as \”star-crossed lovers\”. They hope by doing so they would get support and sympathy from their sponsors. In the Hunger Games having numerous and wealthy sponsors was vital not only for performance, but most importantly, survival.

When we discover later on in the series that District 13 does exist it is quite surprising. They worked underground for years to try and overtake Panem-they were even able to infiltrate the governing body. In order to create a functioning society District 13 was run like a military camp-uniforms, portion control, and daily schooling. District 13 and the resistant forces of other districts eventually were able to take down the overlord Snow. Panem was disbanded and a stable, happy community was created. The star-crossed lovers Peeta and Katniss were married and finally lived in a hunger free, calm place.
