The UN Says the Ukrainian People Must Decide their Fate, NATO wants something else

eu-ukraine

On December 8, 2013, United Nations Secretary General Ban-Ki moon telephoned Ukrainian President Yanukovich to discuss the deteriorating and destabilizing situation in Kiev, as Ukrainian demonstrators, in an action some described as vandalism, smashed and beheaded a public statue, a symbolic action foreboding violent civil conflict, ostensibly protesting Yanukovich’s government’s refusal to sign, according to the New York Times, “sweeping political and free-trade agreements with the European Union.”

The NYT’s statement was a gross misrepresentation of the reality of the agreement which the US and NATO countries were virtually coercing Ukraine to sign.  But to its credit, on December 12, the NYT acknowledged, “For months, the International Monetary Fund has refused to sign off on a nearly $ 15 billion dollar bailout loan that Ukraine needs by March to refinance its external debt.  The IMF wants Ukraine to accept harsh conditions including raising domestic gas prices,  and imposing strict budgetary austerity.  These conditions could also lead to more political upheaval.”

In an act of supreme hypocrisy and cynicism, the former US Ambassador to NATO, Victoria Nuland attempted to bully the Ukrainian government into signing the EU agreement which would have dragged Ukraine into the economic crisis plaguing Western European countries, and transformed Ukraine into a puppet state, completing NATO’s military encirclement of Russia.  Like the wolf disguised in granny’s clothes, luring gullible Ukrainians to their doom, Ms. Nuland arrogantly hectored the Ukrainian President:  “I made it absolutely clear to him that what happened  last night, what has been happening in security terms here, is absolutely impermissible in a European state, in a democratic state. We also made clear that we believe there is a way out for Ukraine , that it is still possible to save Ukraine’s European future,”’  Ms. Nuland said. The European accords were expected to be accompanied by a rescue package from the IMF, but Mr. Yanukovich had already rejected that because of the conditions attached.”

Granny Nuland also presumed to lecture the infinitely more sophisticated Russian President Putin, “urging Russia to use its influence to press for peace, human dignity and a political solution, and emphasized Ukraine’s need for ‘a return to economic health with the support of the International Monetary Fund.’” This gross insult to the Russian President’s intelligence suggests that the former US ambassador to NATO is dangerously out of contact with reality, or dangerously cynical, or both, and in a photograph published December 12, Ms. Nuland is  presented offering a bag of food to Ukrainians, who are unaware that the food she is proffering is laced with the arsenic of economic austerity measures that will plunge their already ailing economy into the catastrophic abyss of economic and social injustice caused by those  austerity measures, imposed by the IMF, which have devastated the societies in the European Union, including Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France and the United Kingdom.

The Association Agreement is a Doorway to NATO Expansion

But this is the “prettier” side of the US and EU seduction which will culminate in merely ravaging the Ukrainian economy and society. In reality, the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement is part of a military arrangement which will enable NATO to completely split Ukraine from Russia, and place it in the perilous position of being in the middle of any east-west confrontation. Eastern Ukrainians are fiercely opposed to Ukraine’s signing this inherently military document of incorporation into the EU, and the West’s provocative encouragement of Kiev’s demonstrations against Yanukevich risked inciting a civil war.

The proposed “Association Agreement” between the Ukraine and the European Union is in fact a dangerous NATO military agreement disguised as a customs and economic agreement.  Even if the treaty does not pass, it reveals the truly continuing aggressive goals of the NATO leadership and their willingness to use all means of deceit to achieve their ends.  Clearly in order for the military elements of this proposal to have reached this stage of development, Ukraine-NATO military discussions and commitments must already be intensive and advanced.  This explains the extraordinary anger on the part of the NATO countries when Ukraine withdrew from this agenda.

The treaty was surrounded by a propaganda campaign which fraudulently tried to convince the Ukrainian people and the world that it was an economic agreement bringing prosperity and no visa requirements for travel within the EU.  The military component of this ‘economic agreement’ is actually the first substantive part of the document (see Title II Articles 4-16).

NATO’s plan under the Agreement is accomplished by integrating Ukraine into the EU’s military structure (the European Common Security and Defense Policy-ESDP or CSDP – which is dominated by powerful NATO states, and the text makes it clear that association with the EU military structure includes its coordination with the US military and NATO.

The goal is to incorporate Ukraine into NATO’s continuing drive east against Russia and Belarus, the targeted regions to the east and south of the Black Sea, and even “global” challenges (see Article 4, Sec.2(c)).

The Treaty calls for a “political dialogue” to promote “convergence on foreign and security matters with the aim of Ukraine’s ever deeper involvement into the European security area (and) strengthen cooperation and dialogue between the Parties on international security and crisis management, notably in order to address global (!) and regional challenges and key threats” (Article 4, Sec. 1, Sec. 2(c))

This political military dialogue is coordinated at various levels in several structures:

  • The EU’s Political and Security Committee (which coordinates both (1) the EU Military Committee, where the Defense Ministers coordinate operations, as well as (2) the Political Military Group) (Article 5 Sec. 3 (a))

  • “all diplomatic and military channels between the Parties, including appropriate contacts in third countries (United States) and within the United Nations, the OSCE, and other international fora (ie, NATO)” (Article 5 Sec. 3 (b).  “Cooperation…shall aim at increasing policy convergence and effectiveness, and promoting joint policy planning.  To this end, the Parties shall make use of bilateral (ie, including US-Ukrainian), international (ie NATO) and regional fora” (Article 7, Sec. 1)

  •  And “regular meetings both at the level of high officials and of experts of the military institutions of the Parties,” (Article 5, Sec. 3(c));

  •  And the European Defense Agency (Article 10 Sec. 3) which reports to the European Commission.

The Treaty calls for “increased participation of Ukraine in EU-led “civilian and military crisis management operations as well as relevant exercises and training” (Article 10, Sec. 1).

Article 10 Sec. 3 specifically mandates the kind of military technological cooperation necessary for the degree of interoperability critical for unified command and control and combat efficiency;  anticipating that Ukraine would sign onto this agreement, on June 24, 2013 the EU-Ukraine Cooperation Council which was established to implement the agreement published the “EU-Ukraine Association Agenda to prepare and facilitate the implementation of the Association Agreement” including: “increase interoperability where appropriate between Ukrainian peacekeeping units and EU Member States forces through lessons learned from relevant EU crisis management operations to which Ukraine participated, and through involvement of the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine into the formation of EU Multinational Tactical Battle groups.”

This issue has been framed between the 2008 Bucharest summit where NATO declared that Ukraine will become a member of NATO whenever it wants and when it meets the criteria for accession and June 3, 2010 when the Ukrainian parliament rejected, with 226 votes, the goal of “integration into Euro-Atlantic security and NATO membership” from the country’s national security strategy.

The European Union and US are Inciting a Revolt in Ukraine to Expand NATO

The US and NATO “support” – in reality, incitement – of the protesters in Kiev who violently smashed and decapitated the statue of Lenin bears an alarming similarity to the US NATO approach to civil disorder in Syria .  One can only wonder how many of the “demonstrators” in Kiev were spontaneously and authentically opposed to Yanukevich’s government. Certainly, IMF imposed austerity measures have nothing to do with the “dignity” and democratic rights of Ukrainian citizens, who would be degraded by the imposition of IMF austerity measures which would further demolish their sparse living conditions.

Of course, the separation of Ukraine from Russia was a paramount goal of “The Grand Chessboard.”  It is also imperative to question the motives of US-NATO support for the Ukrainian Svoboda party, whose Nazi sympathies and affiliation are notorious – and well documented.

This attempt to incorporate Ukraine into NATO garishly highlights the violation of the promise given by James Baker to Gorbachev, that “NATO will not expand one inch east of Berlin.”

The United Nations daily press briefing of 13 December, 2013 affirmed:  “It’s for the people of Ukraine to decide their own future.  Everybody’s watching very closely what is happening on the streets and through dialogue, which is the most important aspect of all this;  it remains to be seen what the outcome will be.  But it is for the people of Ukraine to decide and, of course, many countries are concerned about the tensions there are.  The Secretary-General has expressed his own concerns about those tensions and has spoken to President Viktor Yanukevich about the need for dialogue and the need for restraint on all sides.  But, ultimately, it’s for the people of Ukraine to decide.”

FORT HOOD, Texas (Reuters) – The fate of a convicted U.S. Army psychiatrist hangs in the balance as a military jury on Monday begins to hear evidence on whether to sentence him to death for firing on unarmed soldiers, killing 13 and wounding 31 in a 2009 shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Texas.

Judge to decide fate of teen Kaitlyn Hunt in same-sex case

Kaitlyn Hunt

  • Kaitlyn Hunt faces felony charges from her relationship with a female classmate

  • Hunt was 18 and the the girl was 14 when the girl’s parents went to authorities

  • Prosecutors say Hunt violated a no-contact order with texts and meetings with the girl

  • A plea offer has been rescinded and her bond should be revoked, prosecutors say

(CNN) — Is Kaitlyn Hunt headed to jail?

A Florida judge will decide the gay Florida teen’s fate Tuesday after prosecutors pulled her plea deal when they discovered she’d exchanged about 20,000 text messages with the underage teen girl at the center of the case against her.

Their relationship began when Hunt was 18 and the teen was 14.

Hunt’s family has said the relationship was consensual; the younger girl’s family said it was sexual.

Under Florida law, a 14-year-old can’t give consent.

Hunt, who turned 19 last week, was charged with two felony counts of lewd and lascivious battery.

Deal nixed

Prosecutors had offered Hunt a deal: Plead guilty to one felony that could later be removed from her record and two misdemeanors in exchange for community service — with no jail time and no mandatory ankle bracelet.

Hunt was free on bail while awaiting trial. She was booked into detention Monday night. And now, prosecutors want her bond revoked after the discovery of the texts.

They say Hunt violated a February court order to not contact the girl.

In court documents, prosecutors said Hunt gave the girl an iPod in February — a device they say was used to receive and send about 20,000 text messages between the two.

Prosecutors also said 25 photographs — including nudes — were also sent, and secret meetings took place between the two.

“These photographs are explicit and depict the defendant nude,” the documents state.

Prosecutors also included examples of texts they say Hunt sent to the girl, including: “(N)o matter what if they find out we talked I’m going to jail until trial starts.”

The state also said the younger girl told a detective that Hunt would drive her to “a remote location where they would have intimate physical contact.” The court papers claim that the most recent meeting took place two weeks ago.

National attention

The Hunt family has refused to comment, and their attorney has not responded to CNN’s request for an interview.

The case gained national attention when Hunt’s family went public on Facebook after she was charged, detailing their daughter’s case and essentially accusing the victim’s family of going after their daughter because she is gay.

The younger girl’s family said that isn’t true and that they were only trying to protect their teenage daughter.

If convicted, Hunt could face 15 years in prison.

CAIRO | Sat Aug 17, 2013 8:02pm EDT

CAIRO (Reuters) – Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood risks political elimination, with the new army-backed government threatening to ban the Islamist organization after launching a fierce crackdown on its supporters that has killed hundreds.

Struggling to stamp its authority on Egypt following the ousting last month of President Mohamed Mursi, the country’s new rulers have upped the rhetoric, saying the Arab world’s most populous nation is at war with terrorism.

More than 700 people have died, most of them backers of Mursi, in four days of violence. That has earned Egypt stiff condemnation from Western nations, uncomfortable with Islamist rule but also with the overthrow of an elected government.

The crackdown has, however, drawn messages of support from key Arab allies like Saudi Arabia, which have long feared the spread of Brotherhood ideology to the Gulf monarchies.

Blaming a defiant Brotherhood for the bloodshed, Egyptian Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi proposed dissolving the group in a move that would force it underground and could usher in mass arrests of its members countrywide.

The government said it was studying the possibility.

“There will be no reconciliation with those whose hands have been stained with blood and who turned weapons against the state and its institutions,” Beblawi told reporters.

A statement from the United Nations said Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned attacks on churches, hospitals and other public facilities and called for both sides to resolve the violence.

“The secretary-general believes that preventing further loss of life should be the Egyptians’ highest priority at this dangerous moment,” the statement said. “With such sharp polarization in Egyptian society, both the authorities and the political leaders share the responsibility for ending the current violence.”

Violence flared briefly on Saturday as backers of Mursi exchanged fire with security forces in a central Cairo mosque, where scores of Muslim Brotherhood protesters had sought refuge from clashes the day before that killed 95 in the capital.

Police finally cleared the building and made a string of arrests, with crowds on the street cheering them on and harassing foreign reporters trying to cover the scene.

“We as Egyptians feel deep bitterness towards coverage of the events in Egypt,” presidential political adviser Mostafa Hegazy said, accusing Western media of ignoring attacks on police and the destruction of churches blamed on Islamists.

FADING POPULARITY

Founded in 1928, the Muslim Brotherhood has deep roots in the provinces and won all five elections that followed the overthrow in 2011 of the autocratic Hosni Mubarak, appearing to cement themselves in the heart of Egyptian power for years to come.

But accusations that they were incompetent rulers intent only on monopolizing government tarnished their reputation.

Hundreds of thousands of Egyptians took to the streets in June to denounce Mursi and the army says it removed him from office on July 3 to avoid a civil war.

Since then, the state media has turned ferociously against the group and there appeared to be little sympathy for the Brotherhood faithful amongst many ordinary Egyptians.

“Democracy did not work for Egypt, I am afraid,” said Hussein Ahmed, a 30-year-old banker in Cairo, who had protested against Mubarak in the 2011 uprising.

“Yes, the Brotherhood were elected, but they never cared about rights or freedoms of anyone but their own group. Why should we feel sorry for them now?”

Brotherhood leaders accuse the military of deliberately sabotaging their time in office and plotting their demise.

After two pro-Mursi protest camps were crushed by police on Wednesday, the Brotherhood launched a “Day of Rage” on Friday, and clashes left at least 173 dead. They have urged their supporters to take to the streets daily in the week ahead.

There were no reports of major rallies on Saturday.

The Interior Ministry said police had arrested more than 1,000 Muslim Brotherhood “elements” following Friday’s riots. The group said daughters and sons of the leadership had been targeted in an effort to gain leverage over the organization.

The state news agency said 250 Brotherhood followers faced possible charges of murder, attempted murder and terrorism.

The government has ordered a dawn-to-dusk curfew that looks set to last until the middle of September, leaving the normally crowded streets of major cities eerily deserted at sundown.

Looking to regain some semblance of normality, banks were due to re-open on Sunday for the first time since Wednesday’s carnage, and the stock exchange will also resume business, with trading cut to three hours from four because of the instability.

Judge urges "wise decision" as jury deliberates Zimmerman"s fate

  • Jurors have 3 options: guilty of 2nd-degree murder, guilty of manslaughter, not guilty

  • “All of us are depending on you to make a wise … decision,” judge tells jurors

  • The verdict has highlighted issues of race and gun laws nationwide

(CNN) — Will George Zimmerman walk, or be banished to a life behind bars? That’s the question as a jury of six resumes deliberations for a second day Saturday morning.

Zimmerman is on trial for last year’s shooting death of Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida.

The all-female jury got the case Friday afternoon after two weeks of testimony and dramatic closing arguments over the past two days.

Judge Debra Nelson read 27 pages of instructions outlining the jury’s three options: convict Zimmerman of second-degree murder or manslaughter , or find him not guilty. She approved the manslaughter option Thursday over the defense’s vehement objection.

“All of us are depending on you to make a wise and legal decision,” Nelson told the jurors.

Beyond the courtroom, the verdict will reverberate nationwide, where it has highlighted issues of race and gun laws.

Some feel passionately that he did nothing wrong and killed Martin in self defense. Others accuse Zimmerman of profiling the unarmed 17-year-old, ignoring a 911 dispatcher’s call not to follow him and killing him without justification.

Martin was African-American while Zimmerman is Hispanic.

The fateful day

Martin was walking back to his father’s fiancee’s house from a Sanford convenience store — where he’d bought snacks.

Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, spotted him and called the police. The two got into an altercation that ended with Martin dead and panicked neighbors calling 911 to report anguished cries for help.

The now 29-year-old Zimmerman never denied shooting Martin on February, 26, 2012 . The question is why.

And who was crying for help that night, Martin or Zimmerman?

Zimmerman a ‘wannabe police officer’

Since opening arguments on June 24, dozens testified as both sides presented extensive information — the gun, pictures, interviews Zimmerman conducted and more — for the jury to consider.

Nelson told the jurors that the prosecution has to prove he’s guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

“Your memory should be your asset,” she told the jurors — among other pieces of advice.

“It is up to you decide which evidence is reliable,” Nelson said. “You should use your common sense.”

Before jurors began their deliberations, attorneys made their case.

Assistant State Attorney Bernie de la Rionda characterized Zimmerman as untrustworthy. He picked apart interviews Zimmerman gave to police and the media.

Why would a scared man get out of his car and walk around after being told by a 911 dispatcher not to follow the victim, the prosecutor asked in his closing argument? Did Zimmerman walk toward Martin, or did Martin come after him? Should Zimmerman have had more than a bloody nose and scratches on his head if he’d had his head slammed on the ground by the victim?

The prosecution got one last chance to present its case Friday, when Assistant State Attorney John Guy rebutted the defense’s closing argument.

Guy characterized Zimmerman as a frustrated wannabe police officer who took the law into his own hands. He had decided Martin was one of the criminals who had been victimizing his neighborhood, he said, then trailed him against the advice of police dispatchers.

“The defendant didn’t shoot Trayvon Martin because he had to,” Guy said. “He shot him because he wanted to. That’s the bottom line.”

Zimmerman, the prosecution said, had a powerful determination not to allow someone he had already decided was a criminal to escape.

“What is that when a grown man, frustrated, angry, with hate in his heart, gets out of his car with a loaded gun and follows a child? A stranger? In the dark? And shoots him through him heart? What is that?” Guy asked.

Preparing for Zimmerman verdict

It was nothing but self defense, defense attorney Mark O’Mara argued.

‘Many coulda beens,’ defense says

“How many ‘coulda beens’ have you heard from the state in this case,” O’Mara asked Friday. “How many ‘what ifs’ have you heard from the state in this case? They don’t get to ask you that. No, no, no.”

“Do not give anybody the benefit of the doubt except for George Zimmerman,” the lawyer said.

O’Mara tried to discredit the prosecution’s portrayal of Zimmerman as frustrated, spiteful and seeking vengeance.

His client wasn’t the aggressor, the defense argued.

It was Martin who stalked Zimmerman and emerged from the darkness to pounce, the defense said. The teenager pinned Zimmerman to the ground and slammed his head into the sidewalk, according to O’Mara.

“That was somebody who used the availability of dangerous items, from his fist to the concrete, to cause great bodily injury against George Zimmerman,” he said.

Guy ridiculed the argument that Zimmerman had suffered substantial injuries.

Repeated blows against concrete would have caused more damage than the rivulets of blood and bumps seen in photographs from the night of the shooting, he said.

Authorities brace for reaction to verdicts

While this drama played out in a Sanford courtroom, Florida authorities braced for the outcome.

In the weeks after Martin’s death, tens of thousands attended rallies demanding Zimmerman’s arrest and castigating authorities for their handling of the case. Some of them wore hoodies, as did Martin the night he was killed, in support of his family.

A lawyer for the late teenager’s family said that, while he wouldn’t call Zimmerman a racist, “this case in its totality has a racial undertone to it.”

Daryl Parks told CNN’s Anderson Cooper that the defendant surmised Martin was a criminal like those who’d struck in his neighborhood before — at least one of whom was black.

“The problem, in this case, … is that Trayvon was not one of those people,” Parks said.

The defense has strongly rejected accusations that Zimmerman is racist. O’Mara cited his client’s work as a mentor to black children and his taking a black girl to his prom as evidence of his non-racist beliefs.

But the perception is still out there.

His defenders have been passionate as well, especially about a person’s right to defend himself with a gun when attacked. Debate swirled over Florida’s “stand your ground” law, which allows those who believe they are in imminent danger to use deadly force to protect themselves.

Calls for peace

Zimmerman’s family is urging people to accept the verdict, whatever it is.

“Though we maintain George committed no crime whatsoever, we acknowledge that the people who called for George’s arrest and subsequent trial have now witnessed both events come to pass,” the family said. “We hope now that as Americans we will all respect the rule of law, which begins with respecting the verdict. The judicial system has run its course — pray for justice, pray for peace, pray for our country.”

Authorities appealed for calm as well and took steps in case some did not heed those appeals.

The sheriff’s office in Broward County, in the Miami area, said it had made a contingency plan to respond to incidents tied to a verdict.

“Freedom of expression is a constitutional right,” the sheriff’s office said. “While raising your voice is encouraged, using your hands is not.”

Civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson Jr. was among those who appealed for peace.

“If Zimmerman is convicted there should not be inappropriate celebrations, because a young man lost his life, and if he is not convicted we should avoid violence because it will only lead to more tragedies,” Jackson said.

But O’Mara said that whatever the outcome, his client will not feel safe.

“There are a percentage of the population who are angry, they’re upset, and they may well take it out on him,” he said.

HLN’s Grace Wong, Graham Winch, Amanda Sloane, Jonathan Anker and Anna Lanfreschi and CNN’s Faith Karimi, Chelsea J. Carter, John Couwels and Mayra Cuevas contributed to this report.
