DHS insider gives final warning

posted on Dec, 27 2013 @ 07:25 PM

According to a journalist at canadafreepress.com, an “insider” at the DHS has been warning of a planned and controlled economic collapse that will trigger Martial Law in the U.S.

And the “source” says Obama is gett’n ready !!

Lots of details …..

…..

For this contact, my source took unprecedented measures to be certain that our contact was far off the radar of prying government eyes and ears. I was stunned at the lengths he employed, and even found myself somewhat annoyed by the inconvenience that his cloak-and-dagger approach caused. It was necessary, according to my source, because all department heads under FEMA and DHS are under orders to identify anyone disclosing any information for termination and potential criminal prosecution.

“DHS is like a prison environment, complete with prison snitches,” he said, referring to the search for leaks and leakers. And the warden is obsessed. Ask anyone in DHS. No one trusts anyone else and whatever sources might be left are shutting up. The threats that have been made far exceed anything I’ve ever seen. Good people are afraid for their lives and the lives of their families. We’ve all been threatened. They see the writing on the wall and are leaving. It’s not a joke and not hype.”

The following is a narrative from my source, prefaced with the instructions to “take it or leave it,” and “disregard it at your own peril.” He added that it’s now up to each American to act on the information themselves or suffer the consequences. “I’ve resigned myself to the fact that most [Americans] will never be convinced of the reality that is taking place right in front of them.”

….. The plan explained

DHS insider gives final warning

Makes some sense especially because the general economic/political “environment” since 2008 has been a bit suspicious.

I think they will do it by creating a massive computer outage.

Perhaps many recent “isolated incidents” are the test of reactions.

And Obama himself seems to be sluffing off a lot of failures lately too.

Nelson Mandela Family Finally Gives Up Charade and Admits Mandela Dead

Funeral was planned a year ago

Rebecca Savastio
Las Vegas Guardian Express
December 12, 2013

Nelson-Mandela

The Nelson Mandela family has finally given up their charade and admitted that Nelson Mandela is dead by announcing today that the former leader of South Africa is no longer with us. The charade began in June of 2013, and Guardian Express has maintained Mandela has been deceased since we were informed of his passing in June via one of our reporters embedded in South Africa. That reporter had received a text message from her close friend who works for the South African News which stated that Mandela had died the night prior. Since June, The Guardian Express has come under attack; first from a “denial of service” attack which shut the site down on and off for three days right after we published the news that Mandela had died. That denial of service attack was traced back to South Africa.

The Guardian Express was also attacked by people denying that the Nelson Mandela family was carrying on a charade. However, we stood by and continue to stand by our account that Mandela was declared permanently brain dead with total organ failure in June of 2013. Now, today, the family has finally decided to give up their charade.

We sent an additional reporter to South Africa who returned with an audio recording of two top government officials confirming the fact that Mandela was totally brain dead and was declared so on June 11. However, his family refused to turn off the life support machines hooked up to his body. Thus, the family could keep him artificially “alive.” Their motive? To settle a huge lawsuit against Mandela’s estate.

THE HEARINGS: Health care site contractor gives testimony...

WASHINGTON (AP) – The principal contractors responsible for the federal government’s troubled health insurance website say the Obama administration shares responsibility for snags that have crippled the system.

Executives of CGI Federal, which built the federal HealthCare.gov website serving 36 states, and QSSI, which designed the part that verifies applicants’ income and other personal details, were testifying Thursday before the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

As the hearing began, Republican committee members said the website problems are symptomatic of deeper flaws in the Affordable Care Act, and they accused administration officials of misleading Congress with repeated assurances that the rollout was on track.

“The American people deserve something that works, or start over,” said Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Pa., adding that the administration should suspend the health law until problems are fixed.

Democrats acknowledged the website problems but defended the law, saying millions of uninsured Americans are counting on it to finally get coverage – and thousands are succeeding in signing up. They accused Republicans of trying to sabotage the law, not to fix it.

“Republicans don’t have clean hands coming here,” said Rep. Frank Pallone, D-N.J.

The hearing comes as President Barack Obama’s allies are starting to fret about the political fallout. Democrats had hoped to run for re-election next year on the benefits of the health care law for millions of uninsured Americans. Instead, computer problems are keeping many consumers from signing up through new online markets.

One House Democrat says the president needs to “man up” and fire somebody, while others are calling for signup deadlines to be extended and a reconsideration of the penalties individuals will face next year if they remain uninsured.

The focus on the contractors is a first step for GOP investigators. After the failure of their drive to defund “Obamacare” by shutting down the government, they’ve been suddenly handed a new line of attack by the administration itself. Administration officials, including Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, are to testify next week.

Cheryl Campbell, senior vice president of CGI, suggested in prepared testimony that Congress should look beyond the contractors. HHS “serves the important role of systems integrator or ‘quarterback’ on this project and is the ultimate responsible party for the end-to-end performance,” she said.

Overwhelming interest from consumers triggered the website problems, she said. “No amount of testing within reasonable time limits can adequately replicate a live environment of this nature,” she said.

Andy Slavitt, representing QSSI’s parent company, said the operation’s virtual back room, known as the federal data hub, is working well despite some bugs. But his company was also involved with another part of the system, a component for registering individual consumer accounts that became an online bottleneck.

Slavitt blamed the administration, saying that a late decision to require consumers to create accounts before they could browse health plans contributed to the overload. “This may have driven higher simultaneous usage of the registration system that wouldn’t have occurred if consumers could window-shop anonymously,” he said.

Rep. Joe Pitts, R-Pa., chairman of the panel’s health subcommittee, said he wants to focus on the administration’s decision not to allow browsing, or window-shopping. That’s a standard feature of e-commerce sites, including Medicare.gov for seniors. Lack of a browsing capability forced all users to first go through the laborious process of creating accounts, overloading that part of the site.

(AP) From left, Tufts Health Plan President and CEO James Roosevelt, Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini, Humana…

“Who made that decision? When was it made? Why was it made?” Pitts asked.

Acknowledging what’s been obvious to many outside experts, the administration said Wednesday that the system didn’t get enough testing, especially at a high user volume, before going live. It blamed a compressed time frame for meeting the Oct. 1 deadline to open the insurance markets. Basic “alpha and user testing” are now completed, but that’s supposed to happen before a launch, not after.

The administration provided no timetable to fix extensive computer snags but said technicians are deep into the job. Its explanation, posted online in an HHS blog post and accompanying graphic, identified six broad areas of problems and outlined fixes underway but in most cases incomplete.

The HHS explanation identified some bugs that have gotten little outside attention. Technical problems have surfaced that are making the application and plan-shopping functions difficult to complete. That’s a concern because those stages are farther along in the signup process than the initial registration, where many consumers have been getting tripped up. The problems are being analyzed and fixes are planned.

Meanwhile, House Democrats are starting to worry aloud about persistent problems with the rollout.

Rep. Richard Nolan, D-Minn., told The Associated Press the computer fiasco has “damaged the brand” of the health care law.

“The president needs to man up, find out who was responsible, and fire them,” Nolan said. He did not name anyone.

Former White House chief of staff Bill Daley, interviewed Thursday on “CBS This Morning,” said that Obama “can’t just get stuck on this for the next several weeks.” As for calls that Sebelius be fired, Daley said that would be like firing the captain of the Titanic “after the ship hit the iceberg.”

Obama says he’s as frustrated as anyone and has promised a “tech surge” to fix the balky website. White House spokesman Jay Carney said the administration will be more transparent about the problems. After more than 20 days without briefing the media, HHS will start regular sessions on Thursday, he said.

In light of the computer problems, some Democrats are saying Obama should consider extending open enrollment season beyond March 31 and revisit the penalties for individuals who don’t sign up and remain uninsured. Under the law, virtually all Americans must carry health insurance starting next year or face fines.

On that point, a change in the timeline for signing up for coverage is underway, the White House said. Consumers have until Dec. 15 to apply for coverage that’s effective Jan. 1. Even though open enrollment lasts until March 31, people would face a penalty if they postpone buying coverage beyond mid-February. Calling that a “disconnect,” the White House said officials will soon issue policy guidance allowing consumers to sign up by the end of March without penalty.

Provocative art: Rebel sculptor gives Czech president the finger ahead of polls

A controversial Czech artist known for his anti-communist stance has sent a very clear message to the republic’s president ahead of parliamentary polls by installing a giant purple hand with a raised middle finger on Prague’s main river.

David Cerny, 45, placed his 10-meter statue of the hand making an obscene gesture on a pontoon boat on the Vltava River on Monday. The huge plastic sculpture is floating near the famous Charles Bridge and is pointed at the Prague Castle – the seat of leftist President Milos Zeman.

This unusual stunt comes only four days before Czech snap parliamentary elections, which may bring the Communist Party a share of indirect power for the first time since the Velvet Revolution ousted it in 1989. Zeman favors a post-election plan by the leftist Social Democrats to form a minority government with implicit support from Communists.

“This finger is aimed straight at the castle politics,” Cerny told the New York Times. “After 23 years, I am horrified at the prospect of the Communists returning to power and of Zeman helping them to do so.”

During the campaign ahead of January presidential elections, Cerny helped Zeman’s rival, charismatic aristocrat Karel Schwarzenberg of the Top 09 rightist party, who came second in the polls.

“Our president is just another reason not to live in the Czech Republic,” the artist told The Prague Post in September. “The political system here is not good, most people know that.”

Zeman was on a visit to Ukraine when the controversial installation was mounted. Through his spokesperson he declined to comment on the statue that he had not seen, Czech media reported.

Cerny is known for being provocative in his art. The floating hand is also not the first time that he has flipped the bird to make his point.

The artist first gained wide attention in 1991 when he got arrested after painting pink a monument to the Soviet tank – commemorating the liberation of Czechoslovakia by the Red Army in 1945 – and placing a raised middle finger on top of it.

Cerny also came up with kind of a logo of a red hand, giving the finger with an obscene slogan written beneath it, referring to the Czech Communist Party. The offending finger was given even more prominence after the Rolling Stone’s Keith Richards wore a T-shirt with the logo on it on stage in 2003.

“Secret” 3G Intel Chip Gives Snoops Backdoor PC Access

vPro processors allow remote access even when computer is turned off

Intel Core vPro processors contain a “secret” 3G chip that allows remote disabling and backdoor access to any computer even when it is turned off.

Secret 3G Intel Chip Gives Snoops Backdoor PC Access 260913vpro

Image: Intel Core vPro.

Although the technology has actually been around for a while, the attendant privacy concerns are only just being aired. The “secret” 3G chip that Intel added to its processors in 2011 caused little consternation until the NSA spying issue exploded earlier this year as a result of Edward Snowden’s revelations.

In a promotional video for the technology, Intel brags that the chips actually offer enhanced security because they don’t require computers to be “powered on” and allow problems to be fixed remotely. The promo also highlights the ability for an administrator to shut down PCs remotely “even if the PC is not connected to the network,” as well as the ability to bypass hard drive encryption.

“Intel actually embedded the 3G radio chip in order to enable its Anti Theft 3.0 technology. And since that technology is found on every Core i3/i5/i7 CPU after Sandy Bridge, that means a lot of CPUs, not just new vPro, might have a secret 3G connection nobody knew about until now,”reports Softpedia.

Jeff Marek, director of business client engineering for Intel, acknowledged that the company’s Sandy Bridge” microprocessor, which was released in 2011, had “the ability to remotely kill and restore a lost or stolen PC via 3G.”

“Core vPro processors contain a second physical processor embedded within the main processor which has it’s own operating system embedded on the chip itself,” writes Jim Stone. “As long as the power supply is available and and in working condition, it can be woken up by the Core vPro processor, which runs on the system’s phantom power and is able to quietly turn individual hardware components on and access anything on them.”

Although the technology is being promoted as a convenient way for IT experts to troubleshoot PC issues remotely, it also allows hackers or NSA snoops to view the entire contents of somebody’s hard drive, even when the power is off and the computer is not connected to a wi-fi network.

It also allows third parties to remotely disable any computer via the “secret” 3G chip that is built into Intel’s Sandy Bridge processors. Webcams could also be remotely accessed.

“This combination of hardware from Intel enables vPro access ports which operate independently of normal user operations,” reports TG Daily. “These include out-of-band communications (communications that exist outside of the scope of anything the machine might be doing through an OS or hypervisor), monitoring and altering of incoming and outgoing network traffic. In short, it operates covertly and snoops and potentially manipulates data.”

Not only does this represent a privacy nightmare, it also dramatically increases the risk of industrial espionage.

The ability for third parties to have remote 3G access to PCs would also allow unwanted content to be placed on somebody’s hard drive, making it easier for intelligence agencies and corrupt law enforcement bodies to frame people.

“The bottom line? The Core vPro processor is the end of any pretend privacy,” writes Stone. “If you think encryption, Norton, or anything else is going to ensure your privacy, including never hooking up to the web at all, think again. There is now more than just a ghost in the machine.”

Latos had received 4.6 runs of support before losing a 1-0 game Wednesday that eliminated the Reds for the NL Central race. Liriano had received 4.5 runs of support – though that is a higher level of support since he pitches half his games in Pittsburgh rather than the hitter friendly ballpark in Cincinnati that Latos calls home. Latos was much stronger Wednesday and on the season overall, as Liriano ranks 41 spots behind him as the 45th most valuable pitcher in baseball this year.

Whichever team wins two of three games this weekend gets the home field advantage for Tuesday’s NL Wildcard game. If the Reds win two of three the two teams finish tied, but the Reds would then have a 10-9 head-to-head season edge for the tie-breaker.

The problem for the Pirates is that will Jeff Locke wearing down last in the season, the Pirates are only 35-32 with their No. 2, 3 and 4 pitchers on the hill (they are 33-32 on www.valueaddbaseball.com, which is reflected in the table above, but Morton and Cole received Victories since then. This also presents problems if they win the Wildcard game because those would be their three pitchers for their opening three games of a series most likely against the Cardinals – meaning Liriano may not start until a Game 4.

The Reds are in much better shape for the next series if Latos can win the Wildcard game, because they still have three other Top 50 pitchers in addition to Johnny Cueto’s return. The former ace is scheduled to make his second start since returning from injury, and even if he struggles the Reds have the option of using Mike Leake – who is actually ranked as the 25th most valuable pitcher this season and had given up only two runs in three starts before being shelled this week by the Mets.

WASHINGTON | Thu Aug 29, 2013 11:45pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Obama administration on Thursday gave American lawmakers what it called fresh evidence that Syria’s government was behind a chemical weapons attack, but faced strong resistance to military action from both U.S. political parties and a stinging rejection from Britain, a key ally.

During a conference call at the end of a difficult day for the White House, U.S. officials told members of Congress there was “no doubt” that chemical weapons were used in Syria last week. Obama aides cited intercepted communications of Syrian officials and evidence of movements by Syria’s military around Damascus before the attack that killed more than 300 people, said U.S. Representative Eliot Engel, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

The administration’s 90-minute briefing on Syria for senior members of Congress was conducted by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, National Security Adviser Susan Rice and other high-ranking U.S. officials.

Several lawmakers in both parties said they were impressed by the briefing and that it made a convincing case for military action. But many were not persuaded, including several key lawmakers in both parties.

Among them: Carl Levin of Michigan, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee. Levin, normally a strong supporter of fellow Democrat Obama, appeared to suggest after Thursday’s briefing that the White House should tap the brakes on any timetable for military action at least until United Nations inspectors complete their examination of the attack area.

Levin also said that White House should secure international support for intervening in Syria – a condition that seemed increasingly distant after Britain’s House of Commons rejected military action in a symbolic vote on Thursday.

Meanwhile, other U.S. lawmakers brought up a range of complications for Obama. They included questions of whether the “limited” military action Obama has suggested would really discourage Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from again using chemical weapons on civilians, and even whether the Pentagon could afford to attack Syria after the $ 85 billion in automatic spending cuts that Congress imposed on the federal government earlier this year.

The increasing doubts about Obama’s call for action against Syria appeared to increase the likelihood that the United States would have to act alone if it wants to launch a missile strike to punish Assad’s government for violating international law by using chemical weapons.

After Parliament’s vote against military action in Syria, British Defense Secretary Philip Hammond said Britain would not take part in any strike but added: “I don’t expect that the lack of British participation will stop any action.”

Obama has left little doubt in recent days that the choice was not whether, but when, to punish Assad’s government for last week’s chemical weapons attack against Syrian rebels outside Damascus. It was one of the most gruesome assaults in a 2 1/2-year civil war that the United Nations estimates has killed more than 100,000 people.

Obama administration officials said Thursday that the president was willing to launch a limited strike against Syria even without specific promises of support from allies because U.S. national security interests were at stake.

Caitlin Hayden, spokeswoman for the White House National Security Council, said after the British Parliament vote that Obama’s decision-making on Syria would be guided by “the best interests of the United States.”

“The U.S. will continue to consult with the UK government – one of our closest allies and friends,” she said in a statement. She added that Obama believes “there are core interests at stake for the United States and that countries who violate international norms regarding chemical weapons need to be held accountable.”

A ‘PAPER TIGER’

Some Republican lawmakers and even some of Obama’s fellow Democrats have complained that the White House has not kept them sufficiently informed on Syria.

After the briefing, some said the administration still had work to do to convince the public that the United States should take action in Syria.

Several said that Obama created a problem for himself and the United States by claiming that Assad would cross a “red line” and spur a strong U.S. response if Syria used chemical weapons.

“The president is going to have to make his case to the American people before he takes any action. The problem that he finds himself in and has placed us in is that if he does not take action now after making these statements, then we become a paper tiger to the rest of the world,” said Republican Representative Howard “Buck” McKeon of California, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee.

Senator James Inhofe, a Republican from Oklahoma, said late Thursday that the administration’s briefing had not been convincing.

“Tonight the administration informed us that they have a ‘broad range of options’ for Syria but failed to lay out a single option,” Inhofe said. “They also did not provide a timeline, a strategy for Syria and the Middle East, or a plan for the funds to execute such an option.”

The timeline for possible U.S. action also has been complicated by the continued presence in Syria of U.N. weapons inspectors who are there to verify that chemical weapons were used. The United Nations said its inspectors would leave the area on Saturday and issue a report on their findings afterward.

Levin, the Democratic senator from Michigan, said efforts to increase pressure on Assad should be conducted “while U.N. inspectors complete their work and while we seek international support for limited, targeted strikes in response to the Assad regime’s large-scale use of chemical weapons against the Syrian people.”

U.S. ACTION ‘JUSTIFIED, WARRANTED’

Some of Obama’s fellow Democrats offered support for his call for a U.S. operation in Syria.

“Tonight’s briefing reaffirmed for me that a decisive and consequential U.S. response is justified and warranted to protect Syrians, as well as to send a global message that chemical weapons attacks in violation of international law will not stand,” Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Robert Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat, said in a statement.

The briefing for senior lawmakers initially was meant to be classified, but did not contain any top-secret information after many members of Congress were unable to get to secure telephone lines.

It was called to address concerns about Obama’s plans that had been expressed by increasingly vocal Republicans and several Democrats in Congress.

Letters circulating among members of Congress in both parties have called for more consultation from the White House on Syria. One, signed by 54 Democrats in the Republican-led House of Representatives, urged Obama to seek congressional approval before pulling the trigger on any U.S. military action.

“While the ongoing human rights violations and continued loss of life are horrific, they should not draw us into an unwise war,” wrote the House Democrats, none of whom are members of the senior leadership.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said any military operation would be “very discrete and limited” and not open-ended, and said the United States would not get caught up in another war like the one in Iraq.

He noted that the British foreign secretary had made clear the United States had the right and ability to make its own foreign policy decisions.

FBI gives telecom firms spying devices

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is secretly pressurizing telecommunications providers into installing spying devices inside internal networks of companies in order to facilitate espionage programs.

Citing the authorization of the move under the Patriot Act, FBI officials have been discussing with carriers in their effort to deploy government-supplied software, which will enable intercepting and analyzing all communications streams, CNET reported.

The software, now identified as “port reader”, used to be known internally as the “harvesting program.”

The FBI spokesman has said the agency has the legal authority to use alternate methods to collect Internet metadata. “In circumstances where a provider is unable to comply with a court order utilizing its own technical solution(s), law enforcement may offer to provide technical assistance to meet the obligation of the court order.”

But, police cannot intercept the contents of real-time communication streams, including email bodies, Facebook messages or streaming video unless a wiretap order from a judge is obtained.

Notwithstanding, “The statute hasn’t caught up with the realities of electronic communication,” says Colleen Boothby, a partner at the Washington, D.C. firm of Levine, Blaszak, Block & Boothby who represents technology companies and industry associations.

Boothby said judges cannot always comprehend how technology has outpaced the law.

In the past, judges drew this conclusion that they have no ability to reject pen register and trap and trace requests as a federal magistrate judge in Florida, in reference to pen register law, wrote “The court under the Act seemingly provides nothing more than a rubber stamp.”

“If magistrates knew more, they would approve less,” said an industry participant, adding, it’s “an interception device by definition”.

The participant, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said carriers are “extra-cautious” resisting installation of the software, as they say it poses privacy and security risks against a sensitive internal network.

Russia gives Snowden asylum, Obama-Putin summit in doubt

MOSCOW/WASHINGTON | Thu Aug 1, 2013 11:46pm EDT

MOSCOW/WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Russia rejected U.S. pleas and granted American fugitive Edward Snowden a year’s asylum on Thursday, letting the former spy agency contractor slip out of a Moscow airport after more than five weeks in limbo while angering the United States and putting in doubt a planned summit between the two nations’ presidents.

The United States wanted Russia to send Snowden home to face criminal charges including espionage for disclosing in June secret American internet and telephone surveillance programs. The White House signaled that President Barack Obama may boycott a September summit with President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

Snowden, whose disclosures triggered an international furor over the reach of U.S. spy operations as part of its counterterrorism efforts, thanked Russia for his temporary asylum and declared that “the law is winning.”

Anatoly Kucherena, Snowden’s Russian lawyer, said the 30-year-old had found shelter in a private home of American expatriates.

Putin’s move aggravated relations with the United States that were already strained by Russian support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in that country’s bloody civil war and a host of other issues.

“We see this as an unfortunate development and we are extremely disappointed by it,” White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters in Washington. “We are evaluating the utility of a summit, in light of this and other issues, but I have no announcement today on that.

Other high-level U.S.-Russian talks were also put in doubt.

Discussions planned for next week between U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and their Russian counterparts are now “up in the air,” according to a U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Snowden, a former National Security Agency contractor, has avoided the hordes of reporters trying to find him since he landed at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport from Hong Kong on June 23. He gave them the slip again as he left the transit area where he had been holed up.

State television showed Snowden, wearing a backpack and a blue button-up shirt, getting into a gray car at the airport, driven by a young man in a baseball cap.

“Over the past eight weeks we have seen the Obama administration show no respect for international or domestic law but in the end the law is winning,” Snowden, whose first leaks were published two months ago, was quoted as saying by the WikiLeaks anti-secrecy group, which has assisted him.

“I thank the Russian Federation for granting me asylum in accordance with its laws and international obligations.”

Grainy images on state television showed Snowden’s document, which is similar to a Russian passport, and revealed that he had been granted asylum for a year from July 31.

‘MOST WANTED MAN’

“He is the most wanted man on planet Earth,” Kucherena told Reuters.

Kucherena said Snowden wanted to rent an apartment and find work in Russia, and had no immediate plans to leave.

Snowden, who had his U.S. passport revoked by Washington, had bided his time in the transit area between the runway and passport control, which Russia considers neutral territory.

“He needs to work. He is not a rich man, and the money that he had, he has of course, spent on food,” said Kucherena, who sits on two high-profile Russian government advisory bodies.

“Snowden is an expert, a very high-level expert, and I am receiving letters from companies and citizens who would eagerly give him a job. He will not have any problems,” the lawyer said.

Snowden already has been offered a job by Russia’s top social networking site.

A pledge not to publish more information that could harm the United States was the condition under which Putin said Snowden could receive safe harbor. “Edward assured me that he is not planning to publish any documents that blacken the American government,” Kucherena said.

Snowden was accompanied by Sarah Harrison, a WikiLeaks legal researcher. “We would like to thank the Russian people and all those others who have helped to protect Mr. Snowden. We have won the battle – now the war,” WikiLeaks said on Twitter.

“I am so thankful to the Russian nation and President Vladimir Putin,” the American’s father, Lonnie Snowden, told Russian state television.

Bruce Fein, an attorney for Lonnie Snowden, spoke twice on Thursday with Kucherena. The discussions were about Edward Snowden’s safety – “he is fine” – and about arranging a visit to Russia by Snowden’s father and his legal team to see his son, a source familiar with the discussions told Reuters.

Lonnie Snowden has not had direct contact with his son yet and “nobody knows where he (Edward) is,” the source said.

The visit to Russia could occur in the next three weeks or so, the source said.

U.S. LAWMAKERS INCENSED

Prominent U.S. lawmakers – Republicans and Democrats – condemned Russia’s action and urged Obama to take stern retaliatory steps beyond the issue of the September summit.

It is not clear whether Obama might also consider a boycott of the G20 summit in Russia in September, immediately after the planned summit with Putin, or of the Winter Olympics, which Russia will host in the city of Sochi next February.

“Russia has stabbed us in the back, and each day that Mr. Snowden is allowed to roam free is another twist of the knife,” said Senator Chuck Schumer, a close Obama ally and fellow Democrat who urged Obama to recommend moving out of Russia the summit of G20 leaders planned for St. Petersburg.

Republican Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham, already sharp critics of Putin, called Russia’s action a disgrace and a deliberate effort to embarrass the United States. They said the United States should retaliate by pushing for completion of all missile-defense programs in Europe and moving for another expansion of NATO to include Russian neighbor Georgia.

Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov played down concerns about the impact on relations with the United States.

“Our president has … expressed hope many times that this will not affect the character of our relations,” he said.

Snowden hopes to avoid the same fate as Bradley Manning, the U.S. Army soldier convicted on Tuesday on criminal charges including espionage and theft related to releasing classified data through WikiLeaks.

Nicaragua, Bolivia and Venezuela have offered Snowden refuge, but there are no direct commercial flights to Latin America from Moscow and he is concerned the United States would intercept any flight he takes.

Snowden also has received a marriage proposal via Twitter from Anna Chapman, the glamorous former agent who was deported to Russia from the United States in a Cold-War style spy swap in 2010.

Putin has said he wants to improve relations with the United States amid differences over the Syrian civil war, his treatment of political opponents and foreign-funded non-governmental organizations. He would have risked looking weak if he had handed Snowden over to the U.S. authorities.

More than half of Russians have a positive opinion of Snowden and 43 percent wanted him to be granted asylum, a poll released by independent research group Levada said this week.

Murder suspect gives himself up to police

“Late last night we received intelligence which led us to an address on Larch Road in Leigh.

“Armed officers attended and a 28-year-old man handed himself into police.

“Over recent weeks we have received a very positive response from the public and we thank the people of Salford, Hindley and Leigh for their co-operation and support.”

A reward of £25,000 had been on offer to anyone with information that led to the arrest and conviction of Cope, while the appeal to find the suspect featured in Thursday’s edition of BBC1′s Crimewatch.

Earlier this month, CCTV images of Cope were released which showed him at a convenience store in Hindley, Wigan, on July 14, where he withdrew cash and bought food.

It was thought he may have evaded police by sleeping rough and using his knowledge of canal pathways between Salford and Leigh.

In a statement issued shortly after Miss Ashton’s death, her family said: “She was the most beautiful, generous, caring person anyone could ever wish to meet. She would never harm anyone and was always there for her children and family.

“Life will never be the same again without her. Our whole family and friends have been devastated by her death. The whole community is in shock.”

Police have charged a 26-year-old man with perverting the course of justice and a 25-year-old man with assisting an offender.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating the prior contact made by Miss Ashton to Greater Manchester Police.
